- The APEC global trade summit is just days away and the city of San Francisco is juggling security concerns, traffic lane closures, and efforts to improve its image, given "doom loop" headlines.
As many as 30,000 people could be in town for APEC.
Some neighborhoods like Chinatown are worried that the detours and the headlines may keep visitors away.

The city will improve if the politicians would deal with crime, homelessness, mentally ill, drugs dealers/users, poverty, housing, infrastructure!

I am excited that SF is in spotlight for something else. I myself go to Chinatown every day for lunch and buy groceries since my office is on the edge of Chinatown which is Bush Street. It has been great to see groups of tourists visiting Chinatown when I walk to Chinatown. Hopefully APEC will bring more business to SF Chinatown.

I used to eat at Sam Wo often in the 70's, 80's and 90's. I'm glad to hear they are still open.
SF Chinatown has an awesome mix of Asian food. In addition to the great Chinese restaurants, there's some really tasty Malaysian, Thai, and Vietnamese restaurants. And Chinatown borders North Beach (Little Italy) so you get a good selection of Italian restaurants and coffee shops.

I highly recommend buying the big bag of flat fortune cookies from the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory. There's a Boba place next door too. There's like 6+ Boba shops in the area. I just went last weekend and we had a good time.
Businesses in Chinatown should invest some time in cleaning up their windows and the streets around their establishments. It is one of the dirtiest places in SF, just after the Tenderloin. I also wonder why Grant Avenue is not a pedestrian-only zone
SF Jail population is up 38% since last year, panicking politicians and DA are trying to clean up SF for APAC and the elections next year.
I agreed, if you never gotten your rental car's window being broken into or your luggages and personal belongings stolen blatantly, you need to come to SF and you never know what surprises are waiting for you.
To the people who don't know what APEC is, just imagine the Olympics but with the World Leaders. It's a big deal, having the bay be apart of it, I respect that.
Though, with everything being like Fort Knox and the streets being clean that you can eat off them, it does show what SF in prime should be like even after all of this.
So now is the safe time to go downtown?
The best Chinese food is not in Chinatown. Food over there is for tourists.
I just came back from Vegas. I find everything in Vegas strip is so artificial. Nothing is authentic. They raise prices to pay for Raider and the A' stadiums. Will not go back. So glad to be back home.
The Chinatown subway station still looks new and shiny, like the one in Singapore.

I hope there are bad highlights just to prove a point that these things can't be avoided and absolutely need to be resolved. People need to have way less tolerance for mediocrity. It's not a narrative when people get robbed, their cars broken into, and have to deal with bullshit on the daily.
Believe it! SF is not a tourist friendly destination
The whole of US is not a human friendly destination. Red states have staggering violence and murder rates compared to blue states, blue states have staggering murder rates compared to civilised countries. The US is the only country in the world that is so violent and unsafe. Ease of access to gun, too many crazy people not getting mental treatment, its a third world cesspit.
It will get worse before it gets better. It will be another couple years down hill and then a few years flat, and then things will turn around. It’s called “complacency”, California, and America.

I wish they went to this trouble for people who actually live in the city and take public transportation. While they're busy "mach show" in the downtown areas, the rest of the city and its neighborhoods will go unprotected, as usual. The bus that usually goes through Chinatown will be diverted because Biden is staying on its route. This will cause great inconvenience to those of us who take that bus regularly, especially the people who regularly shop for their groceries in Chinatown. Bah!
