Do you agree?
Need an x-ray machine! But yeah, it does make it difficult to know how much it's worth without being able to verify what's actually inside and what the condition is. Tough one indeed.
Yeah it’s definitely a factor. I think i have always had some kind of collection. But like u said, during those first several years of Covid. A lot of my collection really stemmed from that. I was working the whole time. But I love that my collection has grown, but at times I have to sell some of it as well to get what I really want in the collection. Another great episode Ryan. Can’t wait for the next one!🙌🏽🙌🏽
Keep politics off the channel please.
With what? That you've already dried up the podcast well and ran out of things to say?
The economy but above all WOKENESS!!! 😝😝😝😝 anybody in line for an acolyte (WOKELYTE) figure??? Fans will pay any amount if they love it!!
I have so much respect for Small Business Owners like Ryan. Some people gamble in the casino. Small Business Owners gamble every time they take on more inventory. Kudos to the entire ToyFederation team for starting this channel and elevating their Brand the Year+ to casuals like me. In the end, everyone else will lose fighting over the price sensitive audience and Toy Federation will win for their service, creativity, and expertise on taking chances on unique items.
Nostalgia sells, I get it. To save my wallet from considerable damage, I watch this show instead and live vicariously through collectors 😂
You can say that again
I've been buying and selling toys since 2009, and was an executive at Lego. When the economy is bad it's a great time to buy as everyone is hard up and cashing out. When everyone is doing great they want to buy back their memories, or whatever new stuff is out. business is business. I'm personally snapping up all I can dirt cheap.
Happy Saturday morning to all! Coffee and Toy Federation great way to start
@@mikegeyer4138 yup
I had that Spider-Man racetrack!! Must have been late 70s or early 80s when we got it. Got a lot of use in my house. Loved it!!!
Honestly, toys are getting more expensive and collectors are being more picky. Not to mention, many are downsizing to get their favorites so we can afford to buy the ones we really like
Vintage toys are super expensive, so collectors like myself are buying the cheaper and newer versions of the vintage toys. They just look better. Hasbro has been killing it with so many new vintage toys being remade into better versions. X-Men is definitely the biggest trend right now
I find that the older generations (40 to 50+ peeps are trying to complete their childhood vintage collections. This will eventually phase out in the next 20 years. While the newer generation will be focused on the latest versions of our vintage favourite. More affordable and trending.
It is what is, and this is what I've been hearing from the community...
people rather travel or dine out then acquire dusty toy.
What gets me is when someone told me once “why would you buy those, they’re just plastic” when talking about collectible “toys” and I said “why print photos? They’re just cardstock? “
“But it’s memories”
And I said “so are these collectibles, just in a different shape” and it turns out I found out later this same guy collects sports memorabilia
When the economy goes south, entertainment products are often the first affected.
people have everything they want already, and tehyre trying to unload a child.
I'm a simple man. I see a new Toy Federation upload. I click!
I imagine the weapons are hiding in the air vents, heating and ac vents of older houses like mine. I remember as a kid using the border of a heating vent as a road for my matchbox cars.
I also remember from time to time as a kid opening the grates to see if I lost any weapons that were usually sitting in the air box below the grilles.
When I bought my house, I took all the vent covers off not just to clean, but also to see if there were any treasures in there. I also did some landscaping and found some trashed matchbox cars.

Absolutely! Everything is getting very expensive. My food bill alone for a family of four has increased significantly. Wages are not keeping up with inflation.Great episode, Ryan.Good stuff.
Wages haven't kept up to inflation for decades. It actually did come close post-pandemic, in the U.S., because of worker shortages, mostly due to lack of immigration. But those wage gains, in turn, led to more inflation. Vicious cycle. The rich got richer, stock market doubled in 4 years. Companies did fine, fueled mostly by greed. Inflation has actually eased up, and reversed for some items. Overall, prices will never go down, wages must go up again. So we're back to normal.
@@kpmedia- JHC so many inaccuracies in this post
@@kpmedia-wut
A long time ago I stopped using the world "Inflation" and replaced it with the 2 words: "Price gouging". The companies that are charging us more are posting record profits. Paying their execs millions more than ever. Spending their money buying up their own stock. All of that record profit is coming from us. Tey're not charging more because of regulations or scarcity. They're charging more because they want all our money. And it's working.
Another fun watch! I feel Andy’s pain. Going through all my old GI Joes and replacing the o-rings. Getting pretty good at it but takes time. Surprised at how good of shape my Joes are in. Great paint and joints.

We lost our toy stores during COVID in our region, here in Canada it is impacting sales. Alot of people I know are selling their stuff on market place, and its not moving

Same thing happened back in 2015. Also, if you guys are hurting for money, have a sale. Something like 30% off store wide sale. You will STILL make a ton of money. Cause rule of thumb when buying is to only offer 40% of value.
Oh Happy Sunday morning from New Zealand....
Just hanging out waiting for a new Toy Fed episode😂
Long time lurker, 1st time poster. I love that you're watching the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon in the background. 😉
Another great episode!
What's affecting the market is the sheer number of "toy" being released at the moment. Hasbro, McFarlane, NECA, Super7 are releasing hundreds of figures per year, many of them useless. Mattel is much better with the number of items released.
It's funny, but as a kid I was overwhelmed by the number of figures available, but back in the 90s companies had much more spartan release schedules. Hasbro - Maybe 25-30 Joes, Kenner- 12 -14 Batman figures, etc.
It’s wonderful to read a comment with an actual valid reason for the cause of this .. rather than the endless political conspiracy comments.
Thanks for this nice reprieve
Yeah I collect hasbro but right now they have released so much so fast spread across multiple stores that i cannot keep up. And then they sell out and I have to buy them at higher prices from a scalper.
I haven’t stopped collecting I just slowed down because these companies are overproducing clutter. Mcfarlane, Neca, hasbro, & super7 want raise prices while not improving any of their figures articulation, head sculpts etc.
This!
Ever since covid happened I had to slow down and buy less, now I only make 2 maybe 3 big shipment orders a year.
True that. I went a little nuts at first with the McFarlane dc multiverse line. I’m a Batman collector really but I had to buy other characters in order to complete the build a figure figures. So I was buying em up left and right and then I started noticing some things and got a little pissed. First I consider a lot of toys to be art. Call me crazy but they are like little sculptures . Well the sculpts started to get horrible , the paint was crappy and the prices are going up. I can’t afford to be a completionist especially when the product is lacking. And then the bullshit repaints or using the same bodies for other characters bodies. They’re selling us the exact same shit over and over again with a different paint scheme. And they’re making bank doing it because it is an addiction and alot of people can’t say no. It’s new , they don’t have it, it’s a “variant “ so they MUST obtain it. I’ve wised up a bit and can walk away easily if the figure doesn’t really speak to me. It was hard at first but i realized I was being sold the same product no matter how different the packaging or paint . I’m rambling now and don’t even remember where the hell I was going with my rant. The world is full of shit to spend your money on. If it brings you joy then by all means buy what makes you happy. Not for the “worth” but what’s its personally worth to you. And fuck everyone who doesn’t get it.
Its potentially Schrodinger's Spider-man race set where as long as you don't open it is at both complete and not complete.
I listen to this while I’m at the gym or driving home so the visual stuff is usually lost on me. As soon as you mentioned tracks I knew it was the eternia play set.
When the collectors sell their collections, that collectable market is dead.
I guess you missed the part where he said "people are selling us stuff but sometimes we're too busy with customers here to buy"
That ECW belt is great. I payed $90 for mine over a decade ago.. since ive had.. dreamer, sandman, terry funk, raven, rhino justin credible rvd and shane Douglas sign it..
Another factor that is affecting toys.....you have 100's of people on TH-cam claiming everything is a "grail" which is creating more people trying to sell rather than buy. Places like ebay have become people looking to buy your stuff so they can "flip it" and less people buying stuff to collect. But yes......the economy is definitely affecting toys and every other "collectible". This is the worse I've seen it and I've been in the business since the late 1980's.
thank for the nice content ! i brings me back to childhood . greetings from holland
I know with transformers a figure will release, bought up, sold out. The secondary market will shoot the price through the roof. Then about a year later it’s either back to retail or maybe even cheaper than that. I just know it’s super important to be patient as a collector especially now a days.
Amazing video as usual
Everything is cyclical. Technically we are in a Recession right now. But the Media and the Govt. will never call it that. Especially in an election year. People will always collect toys.
I don’t think younger people can afford to collect anything. This hobby is a gen x thing, longing for nostalgia.
Toys are like photos, they hold memories in people’s lives. As far as young people not affording it I agree but also they aren’t as into collecting physical stuff since so much of what they interact with is digital in the first place. A lot of young people born after 2000 or later didn’t play with toys nearly as much as they played digital stuff
I think that Spider man was shrunk wrapped. And yes, the economy is not working for average people. Prices are high, wages are not keeping up. You'll probably see people selling collections at lower prices next year.
Just bought a 1984 Voltron 14" in very good condition for $75. Online asking prices for this item were $200 and above. In reality this toy is maybe worth $20. Yes I over paid but I wanted it. Just because someone else paid $200 does not SET that as the value. Its a old junk toy that will just sit in my collection.
Yes I go thru this with Hot wheels 😅
Looking forward to next week’s show
Ahhh another great ways to start my morning….hey toyfed family
Economy sucks right now.
The Spider-man chase set did originally come shrink wrapped. There are a a few toys and model kits back in the day came shrink wrapped. The action figure stuff usually didn't though. It's a pretty cool set!
Collecting/Hobbies get cut from the budget first. 8:07
I agree with the dust protecting the figure😂
I've been getting some great deals on big boxed Star wars At-at, vehicles and fighters etc.
But my Model, miniature, custom building and painting service business is virtually done. No major clients and no big jobs for nearly 3 years. I used the work to supplement my income as I've been suffering from illness for many years. Here in Australia everyone is selling big collections to get by.
Yep any extra stuff not just toys but anything that is not a necessity is the first thing to go, Ive stopped buying because nothing is selling for now so its just a waiting game but will things turn around, YES it always does!!
The high end 1/6 scale figures are sure as hell not affected!
Always enjoy the videos guys-keep up the excellent content. Hope to visit the shop one day. Used to work for an IT company in Greer!
I had that spider-man slot car set when I was a kid. So many hours of memories!
Man I wanna visit this place just to see that wall of gundam
Yes and no. Video games in my opinion are the biggest killer of the toy market. Part of it the quality of some figures. For example I'm a big fan of the old Marvel Universe line and then the quality began to suffer then they killed the line. Then brought it back as Retro and smaller and then later a bit more articulated but not the same. And then yes, the economy does suck. Can't spend money on action figures if you spwnd all your money on groceries and bills.
That family matters shirt 💯 😂

Collecting in general are for people with money. I would like to get into the old Joe's-not in boxes- or WWF figures, but at the same time I know that something like that can get out of hand. I collect books.
I’ve been waiting for this toy bubble to pop for a while now. And, for the time-being, it looks like it’s playing out more like a gradual deflation rather than an outright crash. Which is for the best. I don’t want to see a bunch of companies go out of business, but I am happy to see that much of the madness is over. I accumulated a lot of stuff the past 7 or 8 years. And while I don’t plan to dump a bunch of it, I can say that I’ve cut back on what I collect the past few years. I know plenty of other collectors are in the same boat. I only have so much space…and I have zero desire to buy a ridiculously overpriced larger house just to store a bunch of shit I don’t need anyway, lol…
Rather have a roof over my head than have a bunch of hunks of plastic in storage. My mindset on toys has changed drastically. It was just an addiction
It is nice and cool but the best feeling is walking away after a few months of not buying you actually don’t even think about buying anything anymore. I am starting to look that way on major live events and just not going anywhere. I own a few classic cars real cars mint and starting to see if I might sell them. I have money but some shit is just long term expensive.
Exactly. That stuff just weighs you down. At the end of the day its useless plastic that just sits there you might look at once a decade and you cant take it with you when you die. Id rather buy things that actually provide me value like a nice car or watch but mainly spend money experiencing life and going places and doing things. That brings you real value. Toys are useless. Were not kids anymore its not even fun
Just saw an old guy make over 300k at an auction on stuff he paid under 500 for in the 70s and 80.../now he can buy a roof over his head lol

Dude…your my brother from another mother…another gen x Chris here….single guy buying toys like micro machines and stuff and they help me cope with being alone too👍🏻
@@christophersteen1873 It's the same reason why truck commercials have Metalica as the theme music now and not Bob Seeger. We are the target demographic and prices will always be higher for people with money. I watch this channel pretty regularly and the people seem to be selling way more than they are buying. When a customer comes in with their toys from the attic, it's to make money not to advance their collections. Now that other people see that they just made 500 bucks off of stuff they forgot about, they follow suit. Maybe they should hold off on purchasing in such high numbers and sell off their stock. First rule of business is to offer a product that people need not necessarily what they think they want. Seems like they were riding a collector high that is kinda wearing off. I don't wanna see anyone struggling but you have to adapt to survive. They said it themselves the big toy companies did this to themselves by over producing and selling direct.
For the amount of bending and squatting and sitting on the floor you guys do, you’ve got the knees in the game. My body would be so broken 😂

Nah. The producers will step in and make it inorganic. Reality TV without makeup is the way.
What is affecting the toy market is OVER PRODUCTION and unneeded variants of toys that are saturating the toy shelves and turning the whole market from one of the older concept that formed a hybrid of collectibility and traditional volume of toys to FAST FOOD ideology where too much unnecessary products, figures, etc are flooding the market in a quality that is way below par with what we used to get and which fans now see as disposable not collectible. Hasbro for one has been flooding the market with toys that NO ONE asked for in numbers that few can financially afford and or choose between and which hence do not sell and end up in ceiling high skids at discount liquidation centers. This is not only killing their brand, but the look is awful for consumers when they see toys being treated like bolts & nails at Home Depot…. A million varieties too many to choose from. The only difference is that we actually need a wide array of nails and bolts but that same retail demand does NOT exist for unending versions of toys… especially action figures and robots. Fans love toys…. they also love EXCLUSIVITY and uniqueness with built in quality. This is not happening anymore with basic action figures and the like. Too much or too poor quality is being pumped into the market and fans are just getting toy fatigue from (and this will sound weird but…) all the unending variety.
You nailed it...even new designs of the same genre are depressing! Nothing really new and interesting at all, imo.
@@idid1866 Exactly. And while you do have exclusive brands like HOT TOYS that make great pieces and innovate over previous releases … this too sets up a major issue for many collectors when newer releases improve on previous $300+ figures… such as Wanda/Scarlet Witch figures. First you got the average Civil War Wanda, then the much improved WandaVision Wanda, and finally the best of both releases… Multiverse of Madness Wanda…… for which die hard fans accumulatively including the previous two figure purchases have shelled out over $1000.00 for one perfect figure That’s crazy. LOL. One of the reasons I have never gotten bored with action figure collecting is because I collect 95% knock offs. Their quality is more than decent, even the basic ones come with light up and or voice features, the boxes are amusing (especially when they mix Marvel & DC lol) , the designs are different and unique, and they are very often limited run or even “country specific” making exclusivity of ownership a huge feature for me on a level of novelty. And hence it’s fun to make my TH-cam toy videos cuz you can be sure what I’m showing very few people have seen or have in their collections. And it’s interesting to note that you don’t see “collecting fatigue” videos from Knock Off collectors of superheroes, robots or the very popular MOTU fake figs. I guess thats because we have to HUNT for what we want in small quantities out there… where as regular Walmart shoppers just wait and see what the next predictable cheap Hasbro mass market, easily accessible, figure gets pumped out for a quick buck…. and doesn’t even come with a light or funny voice box… and so often isn’t even something you want to collect anyway because you’re just going to find it at Value Village in 10 weeks thrown on a shelf for $1.99. FYI… I do own Hot Toys. LOL. I have the Nebula figure (I lOVE Nebula) and the translucent stealth Iron Man figure which despite the hate it gets…. I frikkin LOVED the second I saw it and paid full price to get one. LOL. And yeah… I’d love a Wanda figure too… but can’t decide between the two latest releases. LOL I’ll probably just wait for one to inevitably land on Facebook Marketplace locally at a “discounted” price as so many do. Still kicking myself for not picking up the Hot Toys WW84 figure when I saw it on FB marketplace 5 months ago for $175.00. Damn you rent money and food. LOL
There's other factors, of course, but what you stated is definitely the largest most obvious gorilla in the room.
That ECW belt is a replica belt WWE was selling on their site for $300 when they relaunched ECW. The original has a dark stain wash on the main plate where it says "Taz", and wasn't as shiny as the one WWE sold.
Good morning!

I rarely ever come across any blackstar stuff I always check when I go to toy shows never see anything..
Hasblow has learned to milk the secondary market, rereleasing anything that makes money. Buying duplicates to trade later no longer works.
Also flooding the market.
Love the Family Row (Family Matters) shirt. EPIC!
People cant afford all sorts of things now let alone the realestate to store most things.
i cant even afford to pay attention.
Ive stopped buying a lot of bs that isnt necessary or cant be enjoyed by more members of my family
If things continue, and it looks like it will, stores will be able to pick up lots of collectibles as people will be looking for extra money to buy food, gas, and pay bills. Whether stores can turn those acquisitions around to sell...who knows. Things come and go in cycles, but at some point, one has to wonder if the negative cycles outweigh upswings. Seems that is the indications unfortunately. But people will always seem to want to collect, even if they can't afford it.
Supply and demand your on the right track there is no discretionary spending going on so you sit on more inventory which means your not going to buy so much inventory
Morning Everyone
I'm new to the channel, just trying to get my store off the ground, and very interested in this topic.
I watched the whole episode and they only really said people aren't buying over inflated nonsense.
I really don't wanna get into politics and potentially alienate an entire group of buyers, money is green not red or blue. I just love toys, are people really complaining in the industry about these things like wokeness? Is it a niche problem to certain toys or the industry as a whole. I definitely know Hasbro is crashing just by going into Ollie's. Pops are literally everywhere. Eventually the wants change correct.
Thanks for the videos you guys are supr knowledgeable.
I really am focused on a small niche market. Tokusatsu and Mecha. The fan base is pretty rabid and I hope the momentum sticks around. As a parent my kids are getting into collections as well and though they like my vintage Godzilla and robots they don't care for any other vintage stuff.
They like their pop culture and really prefer highly detailed and articulated figures. My son is after old game consoles as well. That seems to be the way the "toy" market is shifting.
If you look carefully at what is on clearance at Ollie's, you should notice a common thread, and yes, woke politics in these media companies is a huge reason for their recent sad sales numbers.
Some lines of toys from the 70's definitely came shrink wrapped. I'm 56, and I clearly remember unwrapping that stuff. I've picked up a few pieces like '76 era Micronauts and several GI Joe Peter Pan book & record sets that were still shrink wrapped for my collection. Unless he specifically meant slot car sets only?
Micronauts were not shrink-wrapped but those Peter Pan book/record sets all definitely were as you've stated. Since you picked up a Micronaut that was shrink-wrapped I'd suggest that the shrink-wrapping was done by the store where it was originally sold.
Thanks grandpa Joe….

The hobby will crater very soon when the economy crashes and there’s nothing anyone can do to avoid the consequences of QE infinity. There’s going to be a perfect storm of bank failures and consumer debt the everything bubble. The economy is not doing good at all right now. I am an old man so I remember back in 2008 was great if you had the money to buy vintage cheaper and it’s good now again for it if you have the cash flow. I can’t speak on new collectibles at all because I don’t pick up more than a few new figures here and there. But it does seem like I am able to find vintage video games and figures cheaper than they were a few years ago.
Y’all have to remember, especially the older collectors than 8.99 in the 80’s/90’s is the same worth and value than 18.99 in today’s economy. In 20 years a figure will cost 118.99 and that’s just how money works.
Average wage is 1000 a week MINIMUM!! Couldn’t say that 20 years ago.
@@ceylangonen7387 Rubbish. Half of America dont have 1000 in the bank to cover an emergency...its week to week for them
@ceylangonen7387 Gas was also $1.00 a gallon in the 1990's. A very nice home can be bought for $100,000 in the 1980's. A brand new car could be bought for $3,500 in the 1970's. Fiat currency is being printed and devalued, that's how money works.
@@ceylangonen7387try doing the math, Einstein! The wages haven’t come even close to touching the economic costs
@@GameArmorGameplay Also factor in that since the mid-90's, over 100 million people have been added to the population. Even more if we go back to the 70's to compare.
Is that wood blocks and xylophone on your bumper music between segments?
