- In this video I partially disassemble a 1954 Smith-Corona Sterling typewriter in preparation for cleaning. (The cleaning will happen in a later video.) My goal is to remove as much of the non-metal (plastic, rubber, painted parts) as possible so that I can clean the machine with odorless mineral spirits, which will be good for the mechanism but bad for those non-metal parts. I'll clean the non-metal parts separately with appropriate cleaning agents. For the remaining non-metal parts that I can't easily remove (the keycaps and the paper bail rollers) I'll cover them carefully to avoid damage.

I got the exact same one down to the color and case as a gift for my wife. She always wanted a typewriter and she loves that green!
I picked up one of these for $60 and I’m trying to get it cleaned up and working - I already know the drawband needs attention. Thank you for this video.
I got a Smith Corona recently, and I love it. It's in really great shape.
Well done. A very good visual by-the-numbers disassembly process. The music selection was also a good background piece. Of course this will have to be a three part series: disassembly, your cleaning methods, and then reassembly and any problems encountered during it.
Very interesting.
Very cool.
wow
Were you able to get this put back together and functional again? I learned the hard way that once you remove the type guide, it is really tough to get the type aligned again. Maybe you have a trick for this?
Two questions for any typewriter experts out there:
What screwdrivers are you using?
