    There was a nice session; looks like you two were the only souls there, solitude! BTW, you don't need bigger rod and reel for those biggies....my experience has been that when you caught a really big one with a small rod, just reels it in close, put the rod down (while keeping the line tight of course) and then use your hands only on the line and brings it up very slowly; same goes with the wheel. I have lifted squids up this way from jetty of which their hoods alone measured 40 odd cm with 6 lb line. Pretty nerve wrecking though, and but be careful with very fine line, it may cut your hands because the line will be very taut. My 2 cents Cheers

      Thanks you for such thoughtful advice! Will definitely keep that in mind if I am lucky enough to catch a big squid again. Yes the solitude was fabulous and when Martin went to buy lunch I was by myself for a good hour! You will see in our other videos that we are often the only ones on the beach. How lucky are we!

      @@fishingsister No problem. It was at Stenhouse bay jetty where I caught those biggies. The jetty to me is probably the most picturesque in SA and can be very productive on many species. If you have not already visited the place, it's well worth it.

      Thanks! I use my crab net now if I get bigger ones. Works every time 😆

    Try a crab net for retrieval , for the hand line , have the line feed into a bucket

    • @fishingsister
      @fishingsister  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree about the crab net for retrieval. Learnt that trick after filming this vid! Check out our Marion Bay Jetty one. Thanks for your comments!

      @@fishingsister What it does show, is you do not need $1,000.00 reels and NASA grade rods, simple lines , simple bait , simple fishing at its basics, but by entertaining hosts with fishing spots that are easily accessed and enjoyable to boot

    Yum squid 🦑.. Quite often when you drop a big squid put your lure straight back in the water they sometimes come back 👍👍🦑🦑🦑

    Let’s hope there’s plenty around this week and you don’t lose so many. Maybe take a crab net to help lift the big one you’re going to catch for me he he. 😊

      Here's hoping. Yes the crab net is essential these days. Lessons learned lol

    You will see that I could not reel in the big squid on the small rod. What’s your recommendations on a more suitable reel and size? 🙂FS.

  • @peterb1081
    @peterb1081 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Get a stiffer rod will little bend and a bigger reel

    • @fishingsister
      @fishingsister  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes exactly, the rod was too flexible and the reel was tiny...not enough torque for that massive squid, I would have been better off dropping the rod and pulling it in by hand :)

      Hey,good to see U out and about catching something,never use under 20 lbs line,this will get your squid Jag back when your snagged on kelp as it's usually strong enough to unsnag it,never use a gar rod for catching squid,,bit of a weight difference in a squid to a gar,nice job though

    • @fishingsister
      @fishingsister  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was great to catch that squid! It was easier using the handreel than with that rod 😄
