    The second half of my day exploring the Sharr Mountains in Kosovo. My first stop was an impromptu one after I saw some partially destroyed buildings on the roadside, when I looked around I saw more and so decided to investigate. Turns out I had stumbled upon a collection of buildings damaged in fighting during the Kosovo War - these buildings now made the whole area look like a ghost town.
    I entered what looked like an old checkpoint, bullet holes could be seen in the walls and the whole structure was now nothing more than a shell. Across the street were some more damaged buildings and I couldn’t resist heading inside to take a look around. The whole place was trashed and overgrown, it looked like it had been derelict for a couple of decades.
    I then drove through the Sharr Mountains and up towards the premium Ski Resort of Brezovica. As it was the summer the whole village was closed down and no doubt getting ready for winter. I took a look at the ski lifts, the hotel, a few hotels and restaurants, and from the end of the road I admired the spectacular cloud covered mountains all around.
    My final adventure for the day was to make it back to Pristina Airport, drop off the rental car and head into the city, and it was also going to plan until I took an unscheduled food stop on the way, after that things took an unexpected but dramatic turn.

    Love how friendly the people are! You were brave for going up the spiral staircase - I wouldn't have had the guts! It's been lovely seeing the countryside, but very much looking forward to seeing Pristina!

      Yes intrigue got the better of me with that staircase, interesting place!

    You're so brave for visiting those abandoned houses, the trees growing inside them it gives a mysterious appearance, who knows to whom those houses belonged to, and for how many time they've been abandoned.

      It was a surreal experience for sure. I was literally just driving past them and they caught my eye, looked so fascinating I just had to stop for a look around. I often wonder what the story was and what happened there. Looked like a village still trying to recover from war.

      @@MattWhitingsEurope Yes indeed, in some cases it is said that those houses were abandoned due to the mass m*rders committed by the Serbs back in 90s, and the people left their houses and never return. In Kosovo there are many lost people who have not been found even today, also many mass graves of Kosovo's people have been discovered in Serbia which denies it crimes.

    Every day you find friendly locals who are open to chat. It's so great to see. The full tree growing from the staircase really dates it. The car isn't sounding any better! Should have taken a snow plow to finish your journey. You for sure have sold us in visiting the mountains of Kosovo. What a cool story. Good thing you missed the bus. Great video!

      You're right about the bus, it may have cost a bit more but it led to an unforgettable experience! I'd love to return someday in the winter to see the place in ski season, I bet it looks incredible in the snow.

    Love old abandoned buildings. I wish the walls could whisper the secret of their past life. Love the river and the mountains

      Me too! I bet they would have some stories to tell. Interesting to walk around this site, I wasn't expecting to be able to get inside so that was a bonus.

    I hoped you recorded something on the top of the mountains, which are +2500m altitude, but nah ... you should get back there and go up!

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I really would have loved to go up but the weather wasn't great and time was getting on. I hope to return at some point and spend a bit more time in the area, it's a magnificent part of Europe!

      @@MattWhitingsEurope I agree. Sometimes I wish my family stayed there, but they were forced to leave. They would've been killed or kidnapped by the Albanians.
