- Episode 56 - The cover story for this issue of GamePro is of course the outstanding Sonic The Hedgehog, although I'm not really sure that the cover art does it justice! There are lots of other great games covered in this issue as well, along with part 1 of their 16-bit buyers guide! At this time, not only was the 16-bit console war getting ready to heat up with the release of the Super Nintendo, but in general I think that we were standing at the forefront of what was, at least for me, the golden age of home video games!

I think I have said this before, but even still it bears repeating: I would’ve never imagined that watching a magazine “let’s read” would be so good, and in fact I still think it isn’t inherently a great concept... But YOU make it really fun. The presentation, the spirit of the video, everything is spot on. I love these videos. A+
Totally agree! His footnotes and musings are a joy to listen to. He does a great job. I hope he keeps the great content coming!
Bah, I'm sure the same was said about audio books too Mr. Bladegun.
Yesss I love these videos
I'm pretty sure I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it (if for no other reason than to give that extra bit of engagement!): I love these videos. Great way to unwind after a long day, and just as good a way to relive the eras in gaming history that I missed by a few years!
Hell of a Friday night; cinemassacre rental review and a CGQ Magazine read through!
Man, i watched the same. Great Friday Night viewing.
Oh my god, right?? What a way to start a weekend!
maichiki yiist after such a wild night Im thinking about renting some tapes from blockbuster tomorrow ;)
Listening to retro read-throughs while playing retro computer games (Icewind Dale). Life is good.
I dont get a chance to watch as i use to, but i really appreciate these uploads, CGQ.
An hours worth of content about a piece of gaming history just appears in my subs. You use to require an overpriced cable or satellite tv subscription to get such content (and it was still spare at that) and had to set time aside to watch it or find a vhs to record else youd miss it. What a time to be alive.
On more important note: "Asiaton Oleskelu Kielletty" roughly translates to "Absolutely no fat shaming of the neighbors cat"
There is something about the way Konami was making games in the NES era that they all had similar soundtracks. The midi instrumentation, specifically the drums, all haves signature “Konami” sound to them.
Love this channel! For the younger generation, would love to see some 1994-95 issues :)
I know it's been said by many but I Iove these let's read videos so much. They are so relaxing and enjoyable, thank you so much.
Thanks! A new one will be coming out this week.
Smart way to keep content going and bring nostalgia from the older years, love it.
Really appreciate this upload. Going to relax on my day off with this on the background while playing switch/spiderman. Loved gamepro but I didn’t subscribe until about 93... So I never seen this issue. Miss those days so these videos definitely holds it down. Thanks.
I know you don’t like new games much but you should definitely play Spider-man. Lol anyways, my question is have you ever played or heard of Ranger X on the Genesis? It’s such a late release gem that nobody talks about. I like it that way but you’re chill so I don’t mind telling you about it. Check it out and maybe you can stream it.
Oh wow! i just saw this in the recommended videos on the right side of my youtube and got super excited as soon as I saw it. I set the other video to the side in another tab until I finish your hour long video!!! I can't wait!
Nice! That issue is my birthday month and I was 16. :) Oh for it to be 1991 again!
Watched last night but I figure it wouldn't hurt to watch again.
Thanks for uploading dood!
One of the video store advertisers in this magazine still exists today.
Game Dude located in San Fernando Valley, CA
I've been there!
@@CGQuarterly I used to frequent that place quite a bit but the employees who work there come on off as jerks a lot. Been a bout a year since ive been there. As far as you know are there any other video game stores that are still open that used to advertise in these magazines back in our day...?
Thank you for the great read of the magazine!
I miss being a kid in the 90's...
I miss the 90's
Yeah me too.
Same here, man.
You must have been easily pleased, then, unless you're talking about 1995/6 onwards. The early '90s were awful for games. £40 or $40 for crappy side scrollers which were largely interchangeable, jerky fighting games, mostly unplayable racers, trial and error platforming, repeating the same levels time and time again... I've no nostalgia at all for the 8-bit and 16-bit era because the games were mostly lazy, derivative crap.
I honestly believe we were the last to have good childhoods.
Absolutely in love with these videos. Your format is amazing; I love looking forward to a CGQ RnR time.
This is one of my favorite gaming magazine covers of all time ✌
Base Wars was actually really fun. Loved upgrading my robot players for the 1-on-1 battles between bases. Cool twist on the sport.
Man I absolutely love this. When I was young I spent a lot of time in the hospital and I was luckily enough to be able to have the library order these in. I absolutely remember this one. The cover is iconic and it was a very popular issue.
Outstanding work as usual! Still waiting on a let’s read episode of the Official Nintendo Player’s Guide. I haven’t given up on that yet🙏🏻
Time to grab a six pack and snacks. Lets DO THIS!
No one said they couldn't be healthy snacks.
The word snacks makes me want to die. Please help me
a couple of female entertainers would also be a welcome addition to an otherwise pleasant evening.
This takes me back as I was a loyal GamePro reader from 1990 - 1995 before I moved on to GameFan. I love this content!
My initial encounter with Sonic was when one of my friends let me borrow his Genesis unbelievably shortly after he bought it with Sonic, over a weekend when he would be out of town, when I was walking back to his house to return it I unfortunately got approached by a couple of unsavory characters who pulled out a screwdriver on me and pressed it against my stomach and demanded I give them whatever I had on me, without saying I immediately handed over the Genesis with Sonic I was carrying in a shopping bag, still begging and pleading that they just give it back based on the fact that it didn't belong to me, but they just laughed jumped in a car and took off. Upon telling my Mom I really was freightened at what I had got myself into, but my Mom hard working and honest as she always was advise me to let my friend know and not worry about it, but surprisingly to me at the time she didn't care about me getting mugged for the Genesis which at the time was about 180.00 bucks and was something she would never buy for me because of how strained we we're for cash growing up, but she was way more thankful that I wasn't hurt. When I told my friend he actually was the one that disappointed me the most and actually hurt me a bit claiming he didn't believe my "story" and felt I simply didn't want to give it back...when I told my Mom about his reaction she just stayed quiet and told to get ready so we could take care of the matter, I initially thought we would go to my friend's house and explain the situation, ..but to my surprise we headed to a Woolworths we're to my disbelief she asked me what I had got stolen I pointed at the Genesis and she bought it outright, we then walked to my friend's receipt in hand and I was able to not only disprove my friend in his disbelief, but realized how unbelievably incredible my mother was and how loving she still is to me, and being just 13 it was a great valuable lesson and an example of a mother's true love for her son, despite the Genesis she bought was for someone else's kid,...as far as me getting a Genesis for myself I never actually did till I bought one of someone else several years later for about 30 bucks...but the memory of my mother and Genesis live on, btw appreciate all you do Chris, thanks bud👍
Your DollarShaveCLub advert that you put together made me laugh!!
I was one of the ones that didnt know you had another channel lol! Great stuff man
Me too I'm glad I saw this comment cause it was pretty deep into the video that he mentioned it. Thanks man!
7:55 - This is what I always felt like too. The best ads to me as a kid were just the ones that showed enough big screenshots that I got a good idea of what the game was like.
Most of these game ads just felt like marketing agencies trying to be clever in ways that never actually appealed to their core demographic.
Just got off of work and am too tired to play anything so this will be perfect to kill the hour before my wife gets home. Thumbs up , buddy.
great idea, have watched a few of these. Sometimes I post pictures from older comics of magazines on my Instagram. I enjoy these, and you have a good voice/narration
Phenomenal episode. Love this channel!
Thank you Canada for all you do and for all your nation is! I live in the U.S. and I'm jelly!
Aww snap, i used to read gamepro religiously
Huge fan of your work! I can't believe you have another channel I don't know about !!
48:00 on the right page is an ad to sell games to Game Dude in Van Nuys, CA which is still in that same location.
I love how you relate your experiences with seemingly every game out there! I gotta say, I tried a couple games like StormLord and Warbirds and really couldn't get into them. That might have been different if I played them back when 16-bit was the best thing available though.
Love these episodes!
Jesus Christ we're getting old.😓

I know man!
It sucks😥

Great video. So Gameboy light accessories...if you grew up in the midwest your family spent a fair amount of time on the road. A good amount of that time was in the dark, especially fall/winter months. Let me tell you, these lights were crucial if you wanted to play on the go.
Makes sense!
28:33 this evokes memories of an unpleasant experience. one related to a certain nes game. action 52, to be exact
Mani wish I had kept all my old Nintendo power magazines and Gamepros. Started getting both at the end of 1994 and got them until about 2002ish. Lugged them around for years living in different places and finally just threw them away. God it kills me now
That sucks. I wasnt suscribed to anything but threw away the few magz a i had. Now im trying to buy some back, but they are so expensive.
I used to buy Game Pro back in the day....I even had that battle toads Full poster from the Magazine!!
Best sponsor ad ever!
For some reason, I preferred EGM over Gamepro. Maybe it was the overall layout
Incidentally, 3 inch stickers are perfect for the lid of the Gamecube.
"When these articles go too long and spoil too much of the game."
That was always the problem with a lot of the more screenshot heavy magazines back in the day, and it was hard to know how bad it was until you finally got the game and realized how much they'd already given away. I recently did a video covering a bunch of old Nintendo Official Magazines from the UK and man, they gave away the entirety of the first Ocarina of Time dungeon before the game even came out. Had a tendency to show every single stage and weapon/ability for most titles in the review on launch. It got really bad from them.
Late 80s early 90s the golden age of video games for me for sure.
I know a guy who worked at Game Dude and he claimed that the people who mostly order/or ordered from their back magazine catalog ads are/were prison inmates. Apparently, they are still their main target consumers, which I found quite interesting.
That issue was my first GamePro magazine. Which was the beginning to a good few years of subscribing to the magazine.
Enjoyed this episode a little more than usual, because one of my favorite GamePro issues also came out in 1991. I still have it, somewhere. It’s a bit roughed-up by now, but still mostly intact. 🍻
Which issue is it?
I don't know for sure, it's buried. I'll be moving all of that stuff in the coming months. If I find it, I'll report back.
"I like shooting fish in space. " -Darius fan
Fun fact, the advertisement for Game Dude, they're still in business.
Yeah! I've actually been there, once. Cool store.
Vice: Project Doom or Gun Dec, as I knew it then (because i had a japanese bootleg cartridge), was my favourite game as a kid. I liked it even more than Ninja Gaiden II which was my other favourite game on NES.
Great video, I don't mind these long videos at all.
l think Air Fortress is a hidden gem for a early nes game. I love how the guy controls in the air bases. It's the first time I would think of physics in a video game.
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gamepro should be on EVERY single episode of "let's read" Love this issue and love this episode.
I had that issue cause I had the subscription..every page you turned I remember just like it was yesterday..crazy and cool
I was 4 months old when this magazine came out
Man that's cool about the Canadian Judge and Game Genie ! I bought one that very year in late 1991
Yes!....I am such a nerd.
Are there any other channels that do this kind of thing for old PC and Amiga games?
MsMadLemon has been doing flick-throughs of old Amiga magazines.
Thanks Dude. Please, more of these types of vids! So good!
I just ordered some new video lighting that should allow me to make these videos without being at the mercy of the sun.
I miss lookin at these in the store to find things like MKII moves.
I played Trax as a kid and really enjoyed it but forgot about the name so could never find it until recently. It's still super enjoyable!
As always another great episode!!
6:49 Den for Men is a clothing store. They probably listed it here cause at one point they carried licensed video game clothing.
I loved Base Wars when I was a kid.
Those stickers look great. I follow Steve Nazar on Instagram. I love his art. For those old fogies who remember T&C Surf Designs, the company and the two games for NES, Steve designed the characters.
My Mom *loved* Monopoly on the NES! I remember she’d get on the NES when I went to sleep and play for an hour or two. We’d also play against each other sometimes. She beat me. A lot! It was a lot easier to fire up the NES than pull out the actual board, set it up, deal with the money, keep track of the houses and all that stuff.
Some quick thoughts: I had the same experience with Super Tecmo Bowl as you did. I really enjoyed Welltris on the PC. And where I live had the same Good Guys, Circuit City, and Toy 'R Us configuration as you did.
Great month and year, it was when I graduated high school. I was so happy to be released into the wild. Lol I was totally gaming it up still during that time too.
Video games especially disc games can be sent media mail for $2.92
Damn, I bought this magazine when it was new. My first Gamepro.
GamePro and EGM were like my bibles when I was a kid in the early 90’s.
fun (random) fact 6:50 - walmart canada got its start by buying all the going-out-of-business woolco stores.
I like those reseller ads at the back of these old magazines.
I remember when I was in high school I bought Mega Man (the first one) for NES from one of those.
I guess my first foray into "retro gaming"...
Wow I saw Toys For Bob developed Star Control. I first heard of them for their work on Crash Bandicoot Reignited Trilogy. Interesting they have been around so long.
Maaan, you're not kidding about Monopoly. The only fun board game i really played and loved was Trouble! Also, I'm thinking we got our Genesis consoles around the same time. Great read thru. I remember falli g in Love w/ the Stormlord advertisement. I may ACTUALLY check out the game. Totally forgot about it.
Also, the beginning of Hudson Hawk was filmed where i live. (By Sing Sing Prison) . Will send a Postcard from here soon.
50:05 Tecmo Super Bowl was actually released in December of 1991.
I miss these gamepro magazines back in the days
by the way, this specific issue of GamePro was sort of controversial. The editorial staff wanted a Sonic the Hedgehog cover - this new game we saw and were blown away with. The publisher wanted a Bugs Bunny cover - for some Bugs Bunny Gameboy title that was coming out. The battle ended up being a split decision - half the magazines ran with the Sonic cover, the other half with the Bugs Bunny cover. Which ended up pissing off a ton of people because the distribution got screwed up so that both issues showed up in some areas, and people bought both thinking they were two different issues
Deja Vu II was the other MacVenture title you were thinking of. It never got an NES release.
Shadowgate was so popular because it was the first one released on NES. Ironically it was created after Deja Vu and Uninvited on home computers.
I think you'd like Rocketeer the movie Chris. I know I enjoyed it. Sort of a like a classic adventure story from the 1930's. The game wasn't too bad IMO. Great job with the read-thru! The Base Wars game reminds me a lot of Cyberball for Sega Genesis which is an awful football game. I agree with you 100% the Turbo Grafix's ad was a big missed opportunity as they were fighting for market share and attention. As I've told you before, I saw ads for it occasionally but I couldn't name anyone that I knew that had one. Great work Chris, and Dollar Shave better be happy with the effort you put into those ads.
To ship a game, USPS says they'd do it for 7.20 3day air. Which considering second day air is 8 in that add, doesn't seem to steep to me.
Definitely cheaper than I thought it would be.
The guy on the cover of Vice Project Doom looks more like Treat Williams, to me.
Nice. Used to love getting Gamepro so much. Dont think had this one though
Nice video. I love your work !
"Stewart was my best friend...at that time."
Stewart has fallen from grace, eh? I wonder what ever happened to poor old Stewart.
He moved away.
I had Base Wars when I was a kid (or at least I think I did.) I loved it back then, but haven't played it in years.
before even watching i just have to say ....HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!
Hey can you do a history of game pro video? I've been searching for a video so I can see a bunch of magazines I use to read as a kid but there aren't any. Keep up the awesome work & talk to ya next time
Wait, you have another channel?!?
Is that a comic book pillow case you are reading it on? I think I had the same one, my mom probably still has it lol.
Yes!
Love how some ppl seem to think that Wonderboy copied Adventure Island, when it was actually more the other way around! Wonderboy came first!
Wait, and you're 41? no way!
I absolutely love your channel! Was wondering if you have any magazines that happen to have beta screen shots of any sonic games??
Thanks! I don't recall seeing any...
@5:00 Base Wars sound designers were Tomoko Sumiyama and Shigemasa Matsuo, since the TMNT sound design isn't credited from the same developer and it sounds completely the same, you're probably right. Check out Laser Invasion th-cam.com/video/bGVB2-HNgys/w-d-xo.html#t=13m40s which they did between both titles, definitely that same groove. ;)
21:50 I actually love Monopoly in video game form. I seriously love playing it against computers. It plays out pretty quickly at high levels of play. Buy everything, buy the auctions when they come up, and control the houses and hotels. The game becomes a shooting gallery at the end. I had Monopoly on gameboy, Super Nintendo, and multiple copies of the board game as a kid. I still have monopoly for android constantly installed on my phone. If I am stuck with nothing to do I pull it out and do some quick rolls on my game against some computers. I would honestly try to do a monopoly tournament but they are pretty terrible with organizing them.
my friend lent me those multicarts that came with the adapter to play famicom games. never gave it back
Star Control was the SHIT my dude. Spent hours and hours and hours in team battle mode with my boys. The ships & the balancing were perfect by 91 standards.
I was dead when this came out
Yrah indeedthis video was very long, raising in sleep but it was interesting that they mentioned many games such as batman, nagaya, sonic etc,,, but those subjects such as region convertors or how to win a sega genesis was really interesting.
