28:32 lol gay test right there. There is a nice ass on the ad, while you nerd have nothing better to talk about than some 20 years old racing games.

    • @CGQuarterly

So you're saying that I'm gay because I'm not a socially maladjusted weeabo who gets off to anime girls? Actual, real-world women are a lot more fun than fantasies or cartoons. You should give it a try sometime.

    • @lootbox4531
      @lootbox4531 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah because PS1 racing games is whats getting you off like for 3 minutes lolmao. Sorry but that moment was just awkward to watch.

      @costafinkel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Lootbox: LOL you're gettin aroused at anime. If I would say who is a nerd between the 2, I'd say you.

A nice ass is a nice ass, better than PS1 racing games. Stop the whining, nothing wrong with Anime chicks.

Rofl; Kusanagi is a full fleged women, with big tits and ass, wth is that for a comment? Was that comment some snip inside your brain?
Dude stop idiolizing your favorite youtubers, they deserve to be clowned too. There is nothing wrong with that here on the internet, doesnt matter how nice or knowledgeable they are. Its nothing personal.

I remember I was in 6th grade...my first year in middle school...it was early fall/autumn 97...I was going to my first class which happened to be my elective art class...it was still about 15-20 minutes before school started...I remember going through the courtyard of the school which led to art classes and music rooms...it was a quiet and rather empty area for a very over crowded school..it was foggy and kind of chilly out for that morning....I remember seeing this asian kid sitting on top one of the courtyard tables..he was wearing a big coat with a magazine in his hand while eating a poptart ..I didnt know many people or have many friends there yet but I was into games...I asked him about the mag he was reading and he told me it was a ps mag and let me look at it and showed me some cool stuff..I really liked RE1 at the time and we talked about it for a bit and my mind just about exploded when he showed me RE2 was on the way..we didnt have youtube then so hearing about that stuff without proof was pretty much a rumor lol...never seen him again but he was a cool dude...i dont know why i felt compelled to tell this story but seeing the mag cover sent me down a time warp to that morning lol..Crazy over 20 years later I get to see it again on here............i miss the 90s.good stuff bro

Great read. I really enjoy these kind of videos, especially the 90s game magazines. I also liked the fact that you gave us a preview of some of the upcoming content for both channels.

  • @cybernitemusic

I really love how you just go through the games, page by page, and then cut to game footage. Very cathartic experience to go back in time like this. Great video.

  • @PeteSkerritt

The hook that sold the GxTV is the sound. The fold in/fold out speakers sound good on their own- but when combined with the built-in subwoofer located in the rear, the sound really impresses. Even 22 years later, the speakers sound amazing. (But the picture tube is rough after thousands of hours of use.)
Madden 98 was received poorly because its primary competition, NFL GameDay 98, had upgraded to polygonal player models while Madden stayed with sprites. Back then, this was considered a massive step forward... even though the gameplay really hadn’t improved. Once EA Tiburon made the jump to polygons, though, GameDay’s fate was sealed and Madden blew past it.
I love revisiting this time period. Definitely takes me back- and shows how thirsty we were for news and gossip nuggets back then. There was a report in this very magazine issue that Xenogears wasn’t coming stateside (because of religious symbolism). I remember reading that and scowling- but, as we know, Squaresoft changed its mind (thankfully).

Wow, this video brings back the feels. Somehow I received a free year initial subscription and fell in love with it. I remember being in 7th grade home room with my friends dissecting the first issues. It just felt so different from other magazines at the time. Thank you so much for the memories.

You know, about Net Yaroze, back then when I bought PS Magazines (where I live we got the european version of the magazine), they kinda did like a mini series on Yaroze in the demo discs that came bundled with the magazine. Don't know about US but the european editions around 1998 and 1999 all came with a neat, black finish demo CD with a bunch of trials, trailers and whatnot. Well one of the issues I have came with a sort of 'parting shot' for the Yaroze program. I believe the retail and support for those consoles were getting phased out by then, anyway one of the CDs I've got has like 20 or so full-flegded Yaroze games, mostly by japanese and british developers. I remember it came with a soccer game, a Wolfenstein-Doom clone, some JRPG, a couple of abstract racing games, a bunch of puzzle games, you get the idea. Pretty cool in my opinion, I kinda liked a couple of them so I popped that CD every once in a while. Might wanna look up Blitter Boy, that was maybe the best and most polished game I've played from the Yaroze program.

    Show notes:
    - I smashed my thumb in my car door, that’s why there’s a black spot. Anyone that leaves a comment asking about it will receive 1 CGQ demerit. 10 demerits leads to a warning. 3 warning leads to a censure. 3 censures means that you are grounded from video games for 1 week.
    - While I did not open this issue until we did it together on-camera, RetroMags had a brief summary of the issue that listed the games covered. I did a little bit of background research based on that list, so that I wouldn’t look like a complete dumb-dumb (at least not any more than usual) during this episode.
    - The battery for my other camera was dead, so that’s why there is no second “face” camera this time. Frankly, I think the episode is fine without it and I don’t miss it (it was taking screen time away from the magazine) so I am probably not going to bring it back.
    - I am thinking about starting a “CGQ Magazine Club” on Patreon. The launch videos and their ilk do not need any financial assistance, but these magazine read-throughs get relatively low views. So I might do a deal where people can become patrons of the “Let’s Read” episodes, where you would donate on a per-episode rather than per-month basis. Let me know what you guys think.
    - The sweater is from Toyota Gazoo Racing, the Toyota factory racing team that competes in the World Endurance Championship (including the 24 Hours of Le Mans). WEC’s LMP1 cars are the fastest closed-wheel race cars in the world.

Fun read through! So weird that i talked to a friend about Lomax just yesterday and now you mention it in a video.
RayStorm was one of the first games i got for my PS1. Really good game.
Mega Man Neo was only the working title in the west for Mega Man Legends(was also named Mega Man Nova for a while). The Japanese title for the game is Rockman Dash.
Fighting Force was not only a spirital successer to Streets of Rage, it began it's developement as Streets of Rage 4.
And then we have the Net Yaroze. I guess it was kinda "big" here in Europe because with the montly PlayStation Magazines over here they used to put some of those homebrew games on the monthly demo discs.

It might have been where you were shopping for games or something. I remember going to Best Buy to get games new games that were $40 quite often. If they costed more I probably would've had a lot more trouble getting my mom to buy them for me, so I loved that launch sale price or whatever it was. I would always be pretty excited for the Best Buy ad that came in our paper every Sunday.

I had this issue, it is still probably in a box somewhere, and I also bought things based on reviews. NFL Gameday '98 was one of them along with Street Fighter EX + Alpha. I had a demo disc with Ghost in the Shell on it and I wanted the game, but it disappeared quick and I never saw it in stores. I believe I had a subscription to PSM from issue 3 or 4 to 15 or 16. My favorite magazine of the time was GameFan. The GameFan review of FFVII where someone compared it to penicillin blew my mind. I loved reading Saturn game reviews in GameFan even though I didn't have a Saturn.
Gaming magazines were a big part of my youth/teen years since as a kid without much money I used to devour a magazine cover to cover including all the ads. I so badly wanted a Genesis in the 16 bit days based on reviews in GamePro.

Nice video Chris! I know you didn't say too much about it; but NASCAR '98 certainly brought back some great memories. I was not really a NASCAR fan until that game came out and I met my first room mate in college who lived for it. I bought NASCAR '98 and we'd play that game to death, and lots of the other guys on the floor were NASCAR fans too so we'd race all of the time. Usually 'short' races like 25-30 laps. Since you mentioned cheat codes; one of the cheats we learned about was paintball mode on NASCAR '98, and this brought me back to a classic prank we played on one of our friends. We asked this kid if he'd like to race against one of us and he wasn't too sure since he didn't play a lot of games and was anxious about getting beat. So the game starts and just before the race starts, you hit pause and the code was triggered by I believe holding down R1 / L1 simultaneously and if you heard the engine growl you had activated paintball mode. Not making a big deal out of the strange pause...we started the 10-lap race. So I kind of intentionally raced poorly to keep this friend in the lead while I trailed fairly close behind. We'd tell him he was doing really really well and talk about how we just couldn't seem to catch him. So we get into the final turn of the race and I fired a paintball at him; which if it hits your car you lose control and probably crash into the wall and wrecking your car. So I hit him and he goes careening into the wall and I drive on by for the easy win while he earned a did not finish. He never even saw the paintball hit so he had no idea what happened. We told him it was just unlucky but he felt pretty good about how he did and he left. My room mate and I laughed as the look on his face when his car wiped out was priceless. Yes what we did was pretty mean, most definitely but I'll never forget it. Good to know about the many different light guns Playstation had; I actually looked into buying one at our local retro-gaming store and now I'm glad I didn't. The cost of that magazine doesn't surprise me. I remember PC Gamer magazines normally were close to $10, but you did get a demo disc with them. You were pretty polished for a blind read thru...looking forward to the next videos!

14:30 San Francisco rush was such a great game on the consoles. Punching in the codes that just allowed you to drive around was 90 percent of the fun. Doing that with friends was hours of entertainment. Crashing, stunting... anything but racing.

Another great read-through! I never bought PSM back then, since I had an Ultra Game Player subscription, so this is all new to me. Some people have been going back and creating patches so that you can use any light gun with any game. You need to patch an ISO to get it to work, but it would be great to finally try Project Horned Owl without having to use the shitty Justifier. If you haven't checked the site out yet, you can grab a lot of magazines (as PDF, Kindle, and other formats) at Archive.org. They have (Ultra) Game Players, import magazines, and even those massive EGMs from the early to mid-90s.

I remember Colony Wars, Intelligent Cube, some mech game, and Fighting force on one of the Jampaq demo discs I had. Good times, but I was so bad at intelligent cube.

Here in Europe we used to use RGB cables so we had color when we were pirating NTSC region games. With the normal cable you could only see Black & white. Was also pretty expensive when i bought it with my first ps1 in early 99 - cost something like $60

Turbografx-16 reviews! Yes sir!!! I can't get enough TG-16. I think I'll break out the Turbo Express tonight, play some Neutopia, and knock down a few cool ones. 🍻

I was surprised to find out that Sony of America forbid 2D game releases for the PS One. We never had that 'control' here in the UK. I believe Sega of America also had the same policy for the Saturn. It seems odd to force such restrictions.

Nice, I worked at Funcoland at the time of PS and had my PS modded and there was a guy who we worked with who would buy the imports, rip them for everyone who pitched in. So thats how I played Turismo as well.

I remember that ad for Colony Wars, pretty sure I cut one out of a magazine. I own the Dual Analog Joystick, it's awesome for games like Descent, Formula One and Steel Reign. You can force games to have simulated analog movement even if it was made before the Dualshock.
I also own that "Control Glove", total piece of crap...luckily I got it heavily discounted at an EB that was transitioning to a GameStop.

You wanna know what I don't like about comic books?
The time order placement is too confusing for me.
Does the left square go first, the right, does the middle then left then right, or what?
Plus, finding out which series goes first is very time consuming to me

That is an incredible tragedy that you haven't played Duke Nukem, when you do try Duke Nukem 64 and give the multiplayer a good go with at least three to four friends

46:40 The Gun Cons work with every light gun game, they are the best. Same with the Gun Con 2 for the PS2.

Tip for a very rare PS1 game to purchase. Bishi Bashi Special. Japanese crazy game built up of many random mini games.

1.) I'm really loving your "Launch of" series. I love the depth, I love the careful research, and I love the discussion of your personal experiences.
2.) Are you considering doing these for more recent consoles? (i.e. Xbox, GCN, or PS2) I'd love to get a GameCube or Xbox addition to the series, but I suppose that depends on how you define "classic" and what experiences you had with them. For me it's anything 2 generations ago or more than 15 years, and I spent most of my time with the SNES, N64, and GCN as far as consoles go.

I think your opinion of the Namco Guncon is fairly universal. There are few who would disagree with you.

I remember when you used to make beautiful console launch videos instead of just reading magazines. Those were the days...

There will be more launch-type episodes. I have a very busy life outside of TH-cam, and these magazines have a healthy fan base and are easier for me to produce and upload in a more timely manner.

Mace the Dark Age is the first game I ever got for my Nintendo 64. It's not a good game, but I played it all the time with my friends, and still take it off the shelf once in a blue moon for the laughs.
