TakeTwo is ultimately responsible for the mess (with less to lose and most to gain), but I wouldn't be surprised that Rockstar Games is suffering an internal collapse with morale and quality control, with Dan Houser and many others leaving the development company in a huff over T2's narrow minded and outdated business decisions (with Sam Houser partly to blame and not having more of a backbone with T2 execs/shareholders).

You know, I think the biggest problem was that the small team focused on these THREE at the same time, had they focused on each title and released it early at lets say 30 bucks, the games would be better polished (in theory), they would've got more money (Since all would be 90 bucks instead of 60 bucks for all 3) and they would've got 3 christmas season launches.
It woul've been better for everyone, but instead they rushed 3 half-assed ports and in the end had to pull it out from sales. Great job.

Doubt it. It isn't the first time they touch the GTA games and every time they do, it ends up in a disaster. Back then they only remastered San Andreas and it was known as the worst version out there... until the Definitive Edition arrived.
Rockstar's older games and even GTA IV & RDR1 have absolutely horrible code. Changing them usually creates a lot of problems and headaches. GSG needed to be supervised by some of the old programmers who actually worked on the classic trilogy to help them out.

This is exactly why you've got my sub Hex, you actually go into the nitty gritty details behind disasters like the GTA Definitive Trilogy or the Saints Row Reboot. Most people on the surface wouldn't have a clue about how little Rockstar Games, or any other big name publishers under the Take Two umbrella for that matter, have to do with disaster 'Remasters' or 'Reboots' like this. The GTA 'Definitive Edition' is nothing more than a corporate cash grab by Take Two trying to jump onto the trend just like you said.
Some comments I often see say things like "Rockstar make so much money off of Shark Card Sales so why can't they afford to re license all the old tracks or do a proper remake of the game!?" These people don't even know that the majority of the profits go right into Take Two's pockets, basically propping up that twenty billion dollar Market Cap. People don't know things like this, they don't get that these studios don't get a say in what to make or how to make it because its big brother at the top that barks the orders and the rest are left to pick up the pieces.
Another example too is how people think that Bethesda gets to decide who makes the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls, you see it all the time in forums yet not a single one of them will refrain from screeching at you when you point out that Microsoft could walk in one day and tell Bethesda that Mojang is making the next Elder Scrolls and they can't do anything about it. That's business, that's just how it works and its good that there are youtubers like you who point stuff out like this around still because most 'big' youtubers are too busy shilling or meming on the products to break it down like you have, again as you mentioned in the video.
Anyway, my novel aside, keep up the good work Hex!

  • @TheBoxyBear

The choice of Grove Street Games of all studios does make sense. They were the ones to port the trilogy to mobile and San Andreas to modern consoles. A lot of the work put into these ports went into reworking a lot of the games for future proofing and be more portable, including getting rid of legavy dependencies that 1: Were causing compatibility issues on PC 2: Were never ported to mobile architectures. They are the ones who know the code in and out. What could have helped a lot was giving the team more time and pairing them with a studio that is experienced with Unreal.
Speaking of Unreal, NO the engine change doesn't make it a remake. It's true that many remakes opt to use a modern engine for good measure, but changing engines doesnt mean you have to remake the game from scratch. With Unreal especially since it uses C++, you can just import your old code tweak engine calls to Unreal equivalents. Even other engines based on other languages, you can always package your old code and call it as native code from a dll in another language. You can even run Unreal on top of other engines. Heck, Halo MCC uses it for the menus while the games run in their original engines.

Love the video. glad to see someone explaining how 90% of the blame of everything Rockstar does is from Take 2.
But.... I absolutly disagree with the last statment. People don`t play remasters to feel again like the first time the play them. Theres a lot of other reasons.
For example, in PC in some cases it make it easy to play for new players (Like the LucasArts remastered games) and in others, it make it easy to play in modern systems (Like almost everything Nightdive Studios release).
In others, they add tools to make it easy to play nowdays, like with Baldurs Gate or System Shock Enhanced. People play those games because they are some of the best RPGs of all time, not because they want to remember how it feel the first time.
People want a good remaster of the GTA Trilogy because Take 2 never release a good port. Or because is hard to make work GTA 3 and vice City in modern systems. They play San Andres because still today, is one of the best GTAs of all time.
And I give you a example of a game I never like it but I buy and love the remaster: The Bards Tale. I never like Bards Tale and never play more than 5 minutes not understanding nothing. The remaster make it ease to play with a ton of quality of life improvements that make perfectly playable a RPG from the early 80s.
Remasters open the game to a new audience (A lot of times young players that were little kids or didnt born at the time of the original release). Please, don`t deminish the effort adn the work people like Nightdive Studios saying people only want remasters because they want to feel like the first time they play them (And by the way, in some games the second playtrought is even better like in Deus Ex (2001), Thief or Planescape Torment, finding new ways to do objectives or how deep the story goes).

Rockstar isn't blameless, though. Why didn't they do proper QA and/or offered proper PC/PS2 source code instead letting GSG use the terrible mobile ports' code? But I do agree it was a soulless cashgrab ordered from up in the ladder.

    • @kptparker
      @kptparker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Problem is with how coding works. GSG knew well enough they mobile port codes as they written/changed some of them so getting on they hands a legacy code that does not have anything "modern" would take too much time to maneuver through and make any updates to it.

    • @danin900
      @danin900 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

19:35 - New experiences arent being done right anymore thats why we rely on older games because there isnt any passion or love put into them, its all about corporate decisions, and in a lot of cases, political pandering in current year... in otherwords, censorship.
Censorship is limiting games as an art form, as a result we get shitty e experiences, and until thats resolved we will always be that much farther from an enjoyable experience comparable to the games of old.

Video's like this are why I love ya man, you *explain things!* I have heard of Take Two before, but I had no idea they where as powerful as they are, when you hear the name come up, it's like kind mention in passing and just there.
(Edit) I'd like to add something here that like you are saying with everyone else with their reviews and what not, is something I see a lot of people do when they throw around the world "nostalgia" like it's this end all the be all explanation of everything. Yes a ton of people want a lot of games to relive some feeling of the past and really just want something new, but not everyone! No better example can I give then World of Warcraft and the Classic servers....no, no, not WoW's Classic servers themselves but the people who for years wanted to play Vanilla WoW because the genuinely enjoyed playing it, not to relive the feeling of doing X,Y, and Z for the first time or really just want something new.
My Xbox crapped out on me and so did the second one I got, if my Xbox was still working I can tell you now that I would STILL be playing Vice City and Need for Speed Most Wanted and Underground 2! Not because of something feeling of the past because I REALLY ENJOY playing them! Hell if I could get my hands on something that plays Saints Row 1 & 2 (OOOOOOOOOOHHHH), I wouldn't even be tying this right now, I'd be running around something something crazy or stupid just having fun! To me that is what so many new games now days lack, FUN! I kill HOURS playing vice city by simply riding around and listing to music, sitting back in the cut and watching the NPCs and then crazy stuff they do, throw in the Xbox version where I used to be able to add my OWN music and OMG I could kill a month alone just relaxing and riding around before I start doing the crazy stupid fun stuff messing around!
A lot of these games have zero to do with nostalgia for me, hell I have never touched a GTA game after San Andreas, and have zero desire to do so, yep GTA5 a game that is starting to give Skyrim and run for it's money in how many times it's be released, and I have *NEVER TOUCHED IT, NO DO I WANT TO*, we are a small group but some of us just really enjoy playing said game, like the guy who loves an arcade game to the people he buys one and has it in his garage/basement and plays it all the time, not trying to relive some feeling of a kid in the arcade in the 80s, but just really loves that game! I only have a small handful of games like this, anything else and I would have to agree that it would just be for nostalgia purposes!.....(I am looking at you Diablo 2 and Ninja Gaiden )

I'd like to point out several things, might actually want to do a follow up video with those informations, but first and foremost - whilst harassment should not be approved in any way, I find it absolutely ridiculous that Rockstar is the one commenting on it. Their parent-company, Take-Two, has been on an absolute rampage for last couple of years because of mods, and in this year, it managed to get even worse. They've been taking down mods, sending DMCA's, Cease and Desist letters, threatening with lawsuits, and then enacting the lawsuits (guy who was making PC port of RDR1 was forced to pay 500,000 Dollars. Ruining people financially for the rest of their lives, yay!). They even went as far as to harass modders themselves - with them sending private investigators to their homes, and giving them phones with Take-Two representative, who wanted to talk with them about means of cancellation for their projects. At times, Take-Two was even willing to target parents of the modders, all in order to make them stop. It got so bad, that several mod-makers pulled their own mods not because they were ordered to, but because of fear. They created atmosphere of the fear in community. It's genuinely shocking to imagine, yet it's happening. Hell, on the day of release of Defective Edition, they managed to DMCA couple of GTA 4 mods, and... A save-file for Lost and Damned. Not even save-files are safe now foolks. Once again - I do not condone harassment, nor do I attempt it, but honestly, seeing Rockstar begging people to stop, after their company has done far worse things to their community makes my blood boil. They managed to ruin peoples lives over their hobbies, and that's a-ok, but moment somoene sends some mean words towards them, they're the bad guys? Don't give me attitude...
In hindsight, seeing it now really makes sense though - they removed the mods that'd pose competition for them. I know, competition and GTA seems borderline impossible, but if there's one thing that can compete with GTA, it's... GTA. The basic idea - what's the point of buying Definitive Edition for 60$, while you can simply download mods for the copy you already own? It's free, so what's the point? In fact, just about every single new feature in Definitive Trilogy was previously a mod you could easily download for originals (save for checkpoint system, but are you really willing to spend 60$ just for checkpoints?). Take-Two's solution was simple - ban mods that are problematic. That way, you maximilize your payouts. Better yet - said mods were of higher quality then the remasters themselves, so were they still present, it'd be a laughing stock. And just to make sure they maximilize profit even further - remove all copies of older games from the stores whatsoever - that way, people will buy only remasters that are 60 bloody $. Of course, after the backlash, they reinstated back the old games... But only on their launcher. Steam is still lacking them whatsoever. Yay. In retrospective - the Trilogy Remasters are the reason alot of professionally made mods have died.
You mention that Take-Two wouldn't hire more people to focus on remasters, but... That's precisely what they did. Earlier this year, Rockstar managed to obtain yet another group, Rockstar Dundee. Rockstar Dundee was known formerly as Ruffian Games. And Ruffian Games is responsible for Halo MCC collection. So they don't need to look for developer who'll do remasters for them... They already have one. In fact, not sure if you knew, but - the Definitive Edition was actually leaked several months prior to it's announcement (which is absolutely mindboggling, given how secretive Rockstar and Take-Two are. To think something as major as a project would leak out is... Well... Weird). In fact, leak was so accurate, that it got just about everything right regarding those... Save for one thing. Developer. You see, when Kotaku first managed to get a hold of the leak, they announced that it was in fact Rockstar Dundee working on it. It made sense because the studio was already experienced with making remasters, as well as being experienced in Unreal Engine, so it all fell in place. Only thing off was the fact that it'd mean they'd be working on it only for several months by the scheduled release, and in no way would it mean they're capable of delivering in that short amount of time. However, day of announcement cometh, and... It turns out it's Wardrum studios (I refuse to refer to them by their new name. Respect has to be earned, just like money). Although time now made sense - the studio was working on the game for 2 years. For life of me I can't figure out how leaks can be proven right in almost every thing leaked, but the most important thing, the developer, turns out to be completely wrong? During his stream, BadgerGoodger theorized that something else leaked out, something that Ruffian Games was working on, and Kotaku mixed the names during making of the article. I have no clue whether this actually was the case or not. I think I'd be willing to simply chuckle it up to Kotaku being incompetent and hearing one name, but then writing another, or simply not knowing the developer to begin with and making this up. But once again, I don't know the details, so I can only theorize. That being said, if Wardrum Studios was working on those remasters... Then what the hell is Dundee working on?

    • @bliczb8772
      @bliczb8772 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You mentioned that they were likely rushing the project out in order to make it out on Christmas, but... I have entirely different theory. I think they wanted to put it out in time for GTA 3's 20th anniversary. Of course, they still got it couple of weeks afterwards, but with that in mind, it makes some sense as to why they were so eager to rush it out specifically in 2021. You could argue that anniversary of Vice City and San Andreas would be just as special, considering that each of those games is legendary in their own right, and I agree. On another, it was precisely GTA 3 that laid the fundations of things to come. But make no mistake - just because they wanted to make it out for anniversary doesn't mean they care. If anything, I'd argue that they more pretend to care, as if they actually did care, they'd take time with it instead. An argument could be made that even if they thought they needed delays, leaks backed them into corner, and... Had they actually came out and say "no, those leaks are false, we're not making those", etc. people would just brush it off, and it'd be another nail to Kotaku's coffin of incomepetency.
Little fun fact about Wardrum - you might've seen it already, but they have loads of mobile ports of previous installments of GTA under their belt, so it makes sense as to why Take-Two is on the terms they are with them. What you probably didn't know is that back in 2014 and 2015, they made GTA San Andreas ports for X360, PS3 and Windows Store as a remastered version (yes, San Andreas got 2 remasters now), which likely was the reason for their new name (I don't know if that's precisely why, they haven't clarrified it, but that's the closest it'll get for explanation). And those ports were... Essentailly taken straight from mobile versions of the game. And they fucked it up. Vadim M made two-part video series explaining in detail as to why it was bad, with BadgerGoodger coming in and voicing it. Suffice to say - they didn't do the right job back then. Yet somehow, despite their fuck up, Take-Two still chose to use them for the Remasters. Zelnick, stop smoking what you're smoking.
I gotta wonder... How cheap is Wardrum, exactly? I don't mean it in deregatory way, I'm genuinely wondering how much they took for those Remasters? You see, what Take-Two could've done instead was hire modders in order to make this thing - as I stated before, just about everything new in the trilogy re-release was done by the modders beforehand. So why not contact those guys, bunch up and make the thing legit? Why not contact Silent about SilentPatch fixes, etc. Alot of those guys are easy to contact, and they'd be willing to help to work on GTA project, given that they're so dedicated to the franchise. But nah, let's ruin their lives work, ban them, harass them, etc. and then do the same thing ourselves! Had they actually hired modders, they'd make some good PR that way, which would help after constant milking of GTA Online and absolute poor security of Rockstar and Take-Two (Gypsy made a really good video about the subject, titled "GTA's Online dirty little secret", which goes in depth about faults in GTAO security). Even if the whole thing is just for PR, something good would come out of it. I can think of only two reasons why not. First and foremost, the Hot Coffee fiasco - Rockstar themselves wanted to throw modders undet the bus back then, and Take-Two would be no different probably. That being said, right now Rockstar is more then comfortable showing nudity and sex. And since fiasco, one of the Houser brothers even made light of the situation from years ago, and there was a time when Rockstar and modders were working hand-to-hand on several occassions. But this changed in recent years for one reason or another. Another reason is pure, simple, and much more in character with Take-Two - Money. Whatever the price Wardrum took, it must've been so appealing that they went with it because by the off-chance, hiring modders would've been more expensive. That's the explanation I'm personally willing to go with, as it makes alot more sense to me.
I somehow... Doubt GTA 6 is in production. I genuinely do. I somehow think that Rockstar is just doing nothing in this regard and sitting on their ass, choosing instead to opt out for GTA Online content and those sweet, sweet shark card sales. I understand that studio worth of 2000 emplyees sitting on their chairs doing nothing is counterproductive, but somehow... I genuinely do think that. GTA Online shows no signs of slowing down, so what's the point of wasting effort on making another game, which would impact the sales of their golden goose one way or another, when you can simply polish said goose? Although... An argument could be made that RD Online is a dent... No, wait, that thing is dead in the water, screw what I said.
Also in subject of GTA 6... With every day, I'm more and more worried about it. Leslie Benzies is gone. Sam Houser is gone. Lazlow Jones is gone (there's a common misconceptions, so let's make one thing clear - it was not internal conflict within Rockstar that made him leave. He mentioned that reason he left was because of family issues. Both his mother and his sister were diagnosed with cancer, so he wanted to just drop out and spend remaining days with them. And if the profits going in are anything to go by, he probably has enough cash to retire early. That being said - he's still gone from Rockstar, so regardless of reason, it will affect them one way or another). The old guard is largely gone. The people who made those games magic for over years are gone... I'm genuinely scared that GTA 6, or any future Rockstar project will loose a spark they had over the years.

The trilogy was originally slated for 2022, but got moved up because the upcoming re-re-re-release of GTA V got moved back and out of the holiday shopping slate.
So, Take 2 needed something in that spot and sacrificed the remaster to get as much festive dollars they could before word got out how bad it was.

Truth be told I disagree with your accessment at the end. I think there is value in going back and replaying games you've already played in the past. Even if the experience is no longer fresh, a good, fun game remains fun long after the first playthrough.
I am eagerly awaiting the Advance Wars reboot because I want to replay a fun game with a different presentation and rekindled general interest, not to relive my childhood, because my childhood was fucking shit and I'm glad it's over.

Thank you, that's just how I feel. I didn't wanna get the definitive edition with the idea that I could relive my initial playthru of those games, but to have fun with them again along with the enhancements. I'm not one to be blinded by nostalgia. Also, I personally was letdown by GTA 5's endgame content(in single-player) which makes me skeptical of how GTA 6 will turn out.

Good video. Informative and entertaining. Just one thing: I disagree with the ending. I don't think there's anything wrong with a GOOD remaster or remake if it allows you to play an improved version of an existing game with better visuals and a better performance. And it's not only about nostalgia. I've been playing Vice City on and off for 18 years now, I still enjoy it a lot, and I would've loved to play a PROPER "Definitive Edition" that fixes all the old issues and improves the graphics. Just too bad they fucked it up.

What really needs to change is consumer protection laws with software. If a software is broken and falls short of its promise, the purchaser should have every right to ask for a refund and that is how these software companies will start taking their IP seriously again.

Gonna be honest, while most of what you're saying is true, it comes off as arrogant and talking down to the viewer, especially that end segment about rereleases. "No this isnt what you REALLY want." Oh? I didn't know you were the arbiter of consumer desires. Why of course, only YOU would know what the people want and why. Rereleases are nostalgia bait? Sure, but we literally have an entirely new generation of people who have never touched thESE games before. To say that there isnt a market to revive what is gaming history for those who werent there to experience it is laughable. Yes, people do want new things as well, thats not disputed. But must the next generation be excluded from these experience? Before anyone say it, no, people are not gonna run out in mass to buy old ass hardware just to play these games. And while the mission of games preservation has never truly been in the hands of these big companies, the mission still comes first. Whine about rereleases all you want, but these games deserve to be playable throughout time, not have just 15 minutes of fame and locked away vault because "tImEs HaVe ChAnGeD, mOvE On".

The amount of remakes and re-releases we've gotten over the last couple years says a lot about how creatively bankrupt the AAA games industry have become, I'm gonna stay clear of this crappy trilogy remaster despite knowing I'm in the minority.
That being said I find it hard to believe that R* had zero say in the where, when and how of the creation of this remaster when the T2 suits came up with the idea, so I find it hard not to put blame on R* as well as T2 and the years of milking the GTA franchise bone dry have only resulted in R* loosing more fans then catching whales to milk for shark cards.
I do however feel a little bit bad for Grovestreet Games, sure they could have said no to the gig and been realistic, but T2 is a giant and business is business so they chose to take a chance and lost.
From a business perspective its seems clear that T2 and R* was faced with
A: Invest in a full on ground up remake that would cost half a boatload to make and ONLY be GTAO profitable in the long term.
B: Find the cheapest and easy version and port it to current gen for pennies and milk that mofo for max short term profits.
They chose B and I can see why since they are money men and not game dev's, still doesn't mean I have to respect it.

Fresh experience that you mentioned isn`t necessarily means new game. Bigger and better old game can provide fresh experience. Heavily modded games can be vastly different from vanilla versions (obviously). I still occasionally play modded skyrim and stalker CoP.
Part of disappointment associated with remasters/remakes comes (at least, to me) from the fact that devs could have properly remade entirety of old game AND possibly add something that was not available previously. Like some cut content or console-only dlc. Or at least working properly on modern systems. Upscaled textures and new bugs are not worth it.
Hell, I`m not really waiting for gta 6. I lost interest in 5 and didn`t like rdr2. Too bad that gta underground is gone, would have loved to play that. Guess T2 sees modders as rivals.

I'm glad I found this channel way back during the Saints Row Reboot debacle (still waiting to see how much of a shit show that’ll turn out to be, despite the delay) personally despite growing up on GTA, I’ve always preferred the Saints Row series, although I’ve never played SR1 or SR2 I have played everything else and I joined the series with SR3 when it was free for PS+ users on the PS3 back in the day.
I own SR2 I just haven’t played it, and I would love to buy SR1 but Volition and their corporate overlords are being pricks about it and refuse to even acknowledge either SR1 or SR2’s existence. Fat lotta good that did them huh, it’s such a shame because I’ve been looking forward to the next game in the series, but now I don’t even know if I’ll even play this next game. There’s no doubt that it’ll probably be one of the best playing and looking games in the series, but that means nothing if the game itself isn’t fun to play, or if it doesn’t have an enthralling narrative with likable characters. The Saints aren’t the Saints without Johnny Gat.
Honestly if nothing else, this whole trilogy debacle got me to purchase some Steam keys for the originals, I bought them well in advance of the trilogy’s release because I could see the writing on the wall. Should have bought some more honestly since they were only $5 a game and I’m sure they’re worth a lot more now.

also to rub more salt into the wounds defective edtion is getting macrotransactions payed for content in 3generation old games thats sacrilege they just couldnt help themselves and i think this was the plan all along make enough stink for publicity and yes i said macrotransactions because 50 to 100 units of currency is not a small transaction to make
i'll tell you where gta 6 is it dosent exist in order for them to shit out another gta first we need a good competitor to step in unfortunately that new saints row pissed on its chips until we see a game that takes the same genre of gameplay gta offers and hands it out in spades then we will never see a gta 6 its only because of games like driver true crime and saints row did we get such good games like vice city and san andreas each better than the last rockstar even credit their competitors in their games san andreas has a cemetery full of head stones and a wall of names with each person that worked on the competing games
gta has become stale its been three console generations and we the players are still stuck on that one island thats stuck in 2013 with construction still in progress in the middle of the city there are no new map expansions at all with it the online ate the last of the single player planned recourses and gave us more bills to pay online when i play i game i want to escape reality not be reminded of it by paying bills and owning properties i can see why people say gta 4 had the best online experience you weren't tied down with a house a car an online job you just logged on picked up weapons off the street and committed the felony the game is named after grand theft auto you stole any car you liked and could smash it up without repercussion of in game bills to fix it
gta 5 is trying to hard to compete with games such as crew 2 forza and other popular car collecting customisation racing games i do not hold any hope for future gta titles anymore

We all know about Take Two, man. Strauss Zelnick is a curse.
Rockstar is just a part of Take Two. Saying "Rockstar" is just saying "Division of Take Two".
But in this case, we kinda have to say "Take Two", but Rockstar had to have been involved in this. But ultimately, if they were and they went along with it willingly, they are culpable too.
It's not their department, which is messy, with their logo on it. But technically Sony do the same as Take Two. The praise would go to both the developers of the base game and those who remastered it. So...the blame could...if it were Sony rather than Take Two.
Grove Street Games are so small a studio that they would've been needed to help.
Rockstar SHOULD be ashamed of the remaster.

17:20 alright that is false advice, boycotts do NOTHING, they DO NOT WORK, because most people DO NOT KNOW ABOUT or ENGAGE IN them. What you call "harrassment" is nothing of the sort, it's just using the tools at your disposal to voice your disapproval in a way that is actually somewhat effective. Boycotts are the exact same as doing nothing and letting them get away with it. Directly addressing people in charge has some miniscule chance of trickling upwards and creating noise that might be heard.
