I don't know why, but I find this music so scary. Just the fact that it is the end and all the people you've left behind. Sort of makes me think if this actually happened,(the moon was crashing) we wouldn't be able to stop it. The music is still hauntingly awesome even if I'm a little creeped out by it. Probably one of the best songs in any Zelda game. It just oozes pure emotion.
It's composed to make you feel uneasy, the chords are subtly discordant and there are arrhythmic percussive riffs scattered around, along with the high-pitch arpeggiation that doesn't match the tempo of either of the above. Every element of the music is calculated to be off just enough to make you feel uneasy and tense.
Most Zelda games I describe as inspiring and fun adventures. Majora's Mask is dark, subtle, poetical and simply human. Quite possibly the only videogame I dare to call fine art.
Yeah, but they're pretty different. Twilight Princess was epic-dark, like a medieval story with Zelda elements. Also, Majora's mask goes way deeper when it comes to showing the grief of the people of Termina. Clock town is the best Zelda town by a long mile.
Ohhh nooooo..... What if you become a "happy" mask salesman... And then an Imp from the woods takes a mask from you... A mask used for Hexing Rituals...
Clock town final hours were creepy. The town was usually full of life, but when I stept into the town during the final hours there wasn't a single person outside and that eerie yet soothing music was playing. Most tragic moment was seeing anju just sit on her bed waiting for kafie, the room dark only lit by the moon light flowing through the windows, music playing and hotel shaking. That image is burnt into my brain, and this song always remibds me of it
If you get into this game, you have to beat it. You become so emotionally attached to the characters, that anything less than stopping that moon would mean allowing the death of everyone you've helped, has helped you, and who you've come to know and love. Never before has the feeling of being a "hero" been so strong in a Zelda game. This song represents everything that is great about Majora's Mask.
This song...just wow. To me, it feels like something is approaching, but it's not just some projectile to stop, or some enemy to dodge. It's not something you need to fight, or a move to predict. Something powerful, something inevitable, something that almost seems holy, but is dark and evil. Something that can't be stopped. You can reset time and avoid the moon falling, but there's no true way to stop it by normal means. It's a perfect fit.
Man, I don't know how many years it's been since I played Majora's Mask, but this song still gives me chills and fills me with the same feeling of sadness. Such an amazing composition.
And because what mayans actually said was that on that day it was going to rain, and possibly rain until earth was flooded. I know so because i live in Guatemala, the home country for mayans. And it did rain that day.
My first experience with this song was odd - I hate and love the song... I was little and I was overwhelmed with so many things in my head "this world I loved is going to end in a couple of minutes". "Everyone is going to die soon" I have to change it! Actually I never let the moon fall... I couldn't bear it - couldn't bear the fact that I could change the fate of this world. To destroy Termina on purpose was a thing I never could do! With the ocarina in my hand I can change the fate of this world! God I love this song! Facing the impending destruction of Termina... This IS the best Zelda!
If there was no way to stop the moon or go back in time in MM, this song would be even more foreboding. There's nothing you can do now, you've lost. But, we're not going to simply tell you "game over" - you get to watch the consequences of your failure, and then it's going to happen all over again. Forever.
Thank you Majora's Mask. Your the only game that ever kept me afraid AFTER playing it, not just during. I've played and experienced several horror games, but none them have ever scarred me the way this action-adventure game did.
Of all the creatures that walk the earth only man keeps record of time. He catalogs it, measures it, only man can boast that gift. But with that gift comes a curse, a truly human fear. The fear of time running out.
This game came out at an age when humanity was at its peak. No economic crysis, no problems at all. The music industry produced marvelous songs and the game industry was on the top of its game. Now........fuck!
LordFiscus Just to show how amazing this game was and its music. The only Zelda to ever come close to OOT in my opinion. If you look at Majoras Mask and then play SKyward Sword......it makes you cry man. How these series have declined. Lets hope Zelda WiiU will be as awesome as this one. We will find out at this year's E3!
LinkSoul2 Dude! I thought I was part of the 'Weird Crew' for thinking the EXACT same thing. When I played Skyward Sword....meh... *shrugs shoulders*...There weren't ANY critical songs or themes from that game that stuck with me. A good deal of the time I was like "....Where's the music at?...Oh wait. " Sorry, but I was deeply disappointed with Skyward Sword and immediately went back to enjoying Majora's Mask just for the fun of it [ for the millionth time :) ]. So far Zelda games have succeeded in giving the player serious memorable value in practically every game until S.S. . My uncle loves Zelda too, but I told him to get ready for some disappointment because it's nothing compared to the previous titles, especially Majora and Twilight. S.S. was alright, but.... I didn't gain any memorable moments or soul-touching songs out of that title whatsoever. It seemed a bit overrated to me now that I've played it on experience to give my final verdict. It's "Zelda"....it's suppose to have all those five star elements to it. Oh well....maybe the next major title will restore my faith cause at the moment, I'm a bit worried about what they could possibly be thinking of next. They could also consider going back to their roots with the music and remembering what that awesome essence that they need to get in touch with again. Another good strategy would be for them to pursue a "Dark" vibe again for a course of pathway. It really seems to have a significant attraction to Zelda fans apparently.
To become fully emotionally touched by this song, complete the Anju & Kafei sidequest. Not gonna lie, I cried when I ran to the Clock Tower after watching the two reunite with each other and spend their last moments together, while listening to this song. That was until I got the Fierce Deity Mask and demonically laughed as I destroyed Majora. Too bad they never show adult Kafei though...
+Gainstar +Gainstar Yep, and then you get the Fierce Deity mask and utterly obliterate Majora. "Take that, you heartless, cruel, emotionless son of a biggoron!"
i was playing wind waker recently and i was wondering has anyone else noticed that when you beat a boss and the teleporter appears the beginning part of this song plays on loop?
+Lucifer the Lightbearer by the way, this ost is creepy. great, but creepy. am i the only one who thinks that this ost and the mask moving side to side in this video equals nightmare fuel?
When I listen to this it makes me feel rushed because of all the times that this damn music started playing and I would have to rush around Termina trying to finish up a side quest or some shit. I love the track, but I always get so panicked when listening to it...Damn you Majora's Mask. You still haunt me to this day!
Freaked me out playing this when i was younger, there are definite hidden messages in the game waiting to be found out but some things are better off as a mystery
It warms my heart to see all these fellow Zelda fans gathered here for the final hour. I promised myself I would listen to this and play my ocarina right before 12/21/12, and that was 4 years ago. Glad to see most of you are doing it too. C'mon guys, let's play the Oath To Order at 11:59.P.M.
This is one of my all time favorite pieces of video game music EVER. It's so saddening. Like every time I hear it, I get this overwhelming feeling of depression, sadness, hopelessness, and anxiety. It literally puts this hopeless feeling in me, and puts like a lump in my throat and chest. Which means it served it's purpose and did it damn well. Music that gives you such strong emotions is the best music.
5 days, including today, before school ends. 1 bad mark from a subject I'm bad at, and I have until Thursday/Friday to fix it. I'm at risk of losing my summer, and I have to prevent that from happening. _"If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!"_
Y' know, it's long over already... and I've already stopped it without even playing Song of Time. I couldn't play it anyway because -it wouldn't work in this world- I'm missing my ocarina, so I don't have anything to play it with lol XD
I find that this song captures the loneliness both the Skull Kid and the Mask shared. When you think about a mask its ONLY ever meant to be worn and expressed and Skull Kid wanted near the same thing--to be noticed and accepted. These two were the perfect combination and exemplified what looms in the minds of people who are alone and to themselves. Gorgeous.
THEredWET A i like your theory a lot, however it begs the question, is the Happy mask Salesman just strong enough to resist the evil manipulative powers of the Mask? could it be that he simply doesn't have any of the lesser human emotions in him?well we know that's not true, he has shown anger on numerous occasions, and its possible he has incredibly greed for any mask that he deems as his own. one theory is that he is so moody that the mask cant feed off of any constant emotion. however i think the reason the salesman is immune to the mask is that he in one of the moon children, and as a moon child all he cares about are masks, its possible that he might have been the original mask that the moon was guarding, alongside the boy who gives you the fierce deity's mask (the two were probably sealed off together) and the happy mask salesman got his mask stolen by the evil cult (as a boy on the moon) and he supposedly "went through a lot of trouble to find that mask" implying he supposedly had to annihilate the dark cult that had his mask, and he matured over the years of being away from the moon
Este soy yo, una persona común y corriente viendo un video de hace 12 años porque la canción está bien mamalona y el juego fue uno de los mejores de mi infancia, y también un comentario en español
I love the urgency. It's like everything you know and love will be destroyed now unless you do something about it. This song struck a chord in my childhood i thought it was wonderful. I would purposely wait for this time just to hear the song again.
Yeah MM's darkness was better because it was subtle. On the outside it still looked like a colorful, cheery Zelda game, whereas TP was all drab and desaturated from the start.
this song is great because it give you multiple feelings. It gives you the feeling of hope, the feeling of vengance, and the feeling makeing peace before your time is done. Majoras mask shall have a special place in my heart forever.
This song is simply amazing, I can't say anything more about it. I feel it is the perfect song for a feeling of impending doom and really sums up what it feels like to be at the end of the world. But this son is just amazing and does what it needs to do so that I want this to be the song at my funeral, he didn't say that thing about the funeral but still I love this song and it will probably never get old. Why do I want it at my funeral. Because those are my... Final Hours
Lmao funny comment but I don't think him being president will make this country a huge shithole. The rest of the government probably won't let him act upon his stupid ideas
Death, despair, the moon, the mask, death, that's all you think about despair, you can't, it's too late to save everyone The moon, it's falling, you can't do anything The mask, the mask, Majora has no heart, he's a monster, a black hearted demon The cries and sorrows of everyone. This truly was a magnificent game T-T
I love the increase in views as we near the final hour. It's great how something like this can bring so many people together. Long live Majora's Mask, my favorite Zelda game =,)
First time playing the game as a child remember this song giving me so much goosebumps. The darkness, bells and tremors in game painted apocalyptic atmosphere perfectly. Still yet to find a game that can replicate such a feeling.
It's just depressing to see the comments from 7 years ago. I remember my mom hugging me on the final hour and crying. This was playing in the background but then... Someone has played: Oath to Order! And the meteor didn't crash on us, the world was saved by a hero, even tho we don't know who he is but he saved us all.
The feeling of hearing this song, at this time is curious and so intense. Hardly another zelda or another game i've ever played gave me a sensation perfectly captured on this song. I'm going to play MM tomorrow
Majora's Mask did a better job in 2000 of creating a living, breathing world than most games today. The atmosphere, the palpable fear in all the people of Termina over their imminent demise... amazing.
The first time i failed to stop the moon from falling I stoped playing this game for a few years. I couldn’t rap my head around at the terrible thing that I let happen. In college I was wiser and more willing to replay it again. Still I can’t get that scene out of my head. Great and sad game
We've met with a terrible fate, haven't we?

I remember this music playing on December 21st, 2012...

It was great! I beat Majora's mask for the first time on december 20th, 2012. One of the best videogame memories I have.

the moment where Anju and Kafei being reunited during the last hour makes me sad. Yet, its so sweet.

I'm guessing this marked the end of said age.
LordFiscus In sense! ;)

one theory is that he is so moody that the mask cant feed off of any constant emotion.
however
i think the reason the salesman is immune to the mask is that he in one of the moon children, and as a moon child all he cares about are masks, its possible that he might have been the original mask that the moon was guarding, alongside the boy who gives you the fierce deity's mask (the two were probably sealed off together)

Shit! twilight princess was intended to be dark because of wind waker. Majora's mask kicked twilight princess's ass in terms of darkness!
Yeah MM's darkness was better because it was subtle. On the outside it still looked like a colorful, cheery Zelda game, whereas TP was all drab and desaturated from the start.
Who else heard this on new years 2019
nice poem. good to see there's still people who appreciate such a good game.
Nintendo Wi-FI Connection shutting down :(
Anybody else thinking of Luna when they watch the moon fall?
Yes. Perhaps she was behind the moon falling the whole time...lol
DUN DUN DUNNNNN
Celestia's got this!
YES.
I thought of DotA 2's Luna, but i guess the MLP Luna also counts.
this song is great because it give you multiple feelings. It gives you the feeling of hope, the feeling of vengance, and the feeling makeing peace before your time is done. Majoras mask shall have a special place in my heart forever.
If someone made a MIDI out of this...
there you go: www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/n64/zelda-majorasmask-lastend.mid
Lukaner VideoGameMetal
THAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOUUUUUUU
GlitchyPSI sure thing ;) I'm working on a cover of this song at the moment and I'm using this midi.
Burst keyboard on Synthesia?
Well done, friend.
why do people care about midi? just wondering
When school starts
+Fang The Sniper Like especially the first day in high school
There's such an air of complete dread in this song. I love it.
Roughly 1 week until election day...
roughly 1 day
The music that plays when I contemplate suicide.
What?
This song is simply amazing, I can't say anything more about it. I feel it is the perfect song for a feeling of impending doom and really sums up what it feels like to be at the end of the world. But this son is just amazing and does what it needs to do so that I want this to be the song at my funeral, he didn't say that thing about the funeral but still I love this song and it will probably never get old. Why do I want it at my funeral. Because those are my... Final Hours
the last final hours of Trump not being president (if he does get elected)
xd lel USA not the end of the world haha...sure
Lmao funny comment but I don't think him being president will make this country a huge shithole. The rest of the government probably won't let him act upon his stupid ideas
+CrimsoN I hear Hillary Clinton is gonna win and be president. That is only what I hear.
BTW commenting in the final hour before August.
Alduin the Anti-Dragonborn I hate the idea that either Trump or Hillary is gonna be running this country :/
Death, despair, the moon, the mask,
death, that's all you think about
despair, you can't, it's too late to save everyone
The moon, it's falling, you can't do anything
The mask, the mask, Majora has no heart, he's a monster, a black hearted demon
The cries and sorrows of everyone.
This truly was a magnificent game T-T
This song....can you feel the sadness, desperation and hatred? All of three are in this song...
I love the increase in views as we near the final hour. It's great how something like this can bring so many people together. Long live Majora's Mask, my favorite Zelda game =,)
Imagine reading the last thoughts of someone while listening to this. Someone looking forward to an event they never lived to see.
First time playing the game as a child remember this song giving me so much goosebumps. The darkness, bells and tremors in game painted apocalyptic atmosphere perfectly. Still yet to find a game that can replicate such a feeling.
this is the song that sums up what could've happened to gaming if mario didn't exist
@megatominator hang in there mate your not alone
Final hours till Tears of the Kingdom.
Even though this song is pretty dark, I kinda like the intro, and I like hearing this song inside the final boss room in the moon, it fits well
This song is the heart and soul of the beautiful, tragic nightmare that is Majora's Mask.
Dat picture is so related to that comment, thanks for making my day
The feeling of hearing this song, at this time is curious and so intense. Hardly another zelda or another game i've ever played gave me a sensation perfectly captured on this song. I'm going to play MM tomorrow
This OST bring back memories and feelings...
Majora's Mask did a better job in 2000 of creating a living, breathing world than most games today. The atmosphere, the palpable fear in all the people of Termina over their imminent demise... amazing.
I've been listening to this song all day.
And if life had it's own soundtrack, really what would be more fitting?
MAJORA IS DANCING XD
The first time i failed to stop the moon from falling I stoped playing this game for a few years. I couldn’t rap my head around at the terrible thing that I let happen. In college I was wiser and more willing to replay it again. Still I can’t get that scene out of my head. Great and sad game
