    Pull the pin
    Aim at the base
    Squeeze the handle
    Sweep to distribute the chemical
    PASS

You guys should sell a yearly how to adult checklist. So many of these helpful tips require some kind of monthly/ yearly/ bimonthly maintenance. I would buy one!

Something to keep in mind about using your fire extinguisher ''a little'' to put out a BBQ or a camp fire. Even after using it, the dry chemical powder will be inside the head's mechanism and will prevent it from closing the passage completely. Having worked as a fire extinguisher maintenance guy, I have seen my fair share of moments when someone used a 4kg or 6k extinguisher for ''a second'' and put it away since its gauge was still ''in the green''.
The mechanism will not be hermetically sealed anymore and the pressure will decrease over time and will completely depressurize the extinguisher.

Can you do one about fire blankets as-well please? I think more people would be likely to grab these in the kitchen than an extinguisher. Thanks.

I hadn't actually considered calling the fire department *after* you *think* the fire is out, due to that risk of reignition. I'd imagine especially electrical fires. Sure you've smothered it for now, but is the source dealt with? Am I really going to reach to what was just on fire and try to turn it off or unplug it? Not a good idea.

Very important topic, but I think a more appropriate topic/title would have been home fire safety in general.

Data_Error me too. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher is near worthless if you're up on your fire safety.

I didn't know that we should check our fire extinguisher monthly. It would be great to have a video briefly explaining how often maintenance should be done for things.

  • @supersmashsam

You shouldn't shake a fire extinguisher once a month as this compacts the powder at the bottom of the container.
What you should do once a month is flip the extinguisher upside down until all the powder has fallen to the top, then flip back.
This is a better way to keep the powder free flowing. At least that's what I've been told at my recent fire prevention formation.
Also, many extinguisher have a metal stopper which is held by a tie-wrap or something similar. The best way to break the tie-wrap is by twisting the stopper until it breaks. This requires much less force than trying to break it with your hands.

This kitchen fire makes me sweaty
End of the week, cookin mom's spaghetti
The alarm goes off, how did it get so big already?!
I sprayed at the surface, now I regret it.
I dropped the tongs, flipped over the panko breading
The whole house is engulfing now
I try to yell "FIRE!" but the words won't come out
It's smoky and I'm chokin now
I should have just ordered take out!

My smoke detector's only complained about the quality of my cooking once. Maybe that means I need to replace the batteries.

My cousins grandpa shook his fire extinguisher once during inspection, without checking if the pin was still in it. My cousin was two at the time and had pulled it out when he explored the house. The powder went everywhere.

Kidde has recalled many of their extinguishers. You can check their website to find if yours is part of the recall. Many with the vertical pull pin and the plastic handle are part of the recall.

Unless you are actually trained, you should not use a fire extinguisher. Leave the area of the fire. Call emergency services. Leave the building with as many people as possible. Tell the firies if there is anyone left in the building after doing a roll call, and tell them where the fire is and as much info as they need. Do not enter the building again, no matter what.
