- This was envisioned as a 5 minute throwaway video. I'm out here winning the olympic gold in YAPPING.
Ben (73 Yards) / @thevacuumofcomments2946

Okay so since Ben has failed miserably at defending 73 Yards, I'll throw my hat into the ring. I think the reason why 73 Yards worked for some people (including myself) and not for others is because it entirely depends on vibes and emotional investment. Like most fairy tales, it makes no sense and there are plot holes to be found but the core storyline is strong. In this case, it's about a horrible, inexplicable thing happening to Ruby and her learning to not only cope with it but also to use it to her advantage. IIf you weren't invested in Ruby, this would fall flat and you'd start picking out its flaws. But this one really resonated with me. I guess art really does affect people differently and that's okay! And yes I use the term fairy tale because the whole 'cursed protagonist defeats an evil ruler' feels very fairy tale-ish. It's probably why the political stuff feels underdeveloped because most fairytales don't really get into politics that much. It's just an evil king, queen or PM and that's all you need to know.
Better read than others I've heard!
I’ve maintained that the episode feels a lot like a big finish script in its concept and how it tells it story and while I was a lot more fine with it than other I understand why it’s kinda weird for others
I think you nailed it with the point regarding the selling of the episode being dependent on people buying into Ruby as a character. For me, the episode fell flat because I really don't - which is more of a writing issue than how it's performed. I think Maisie Williams acted her socks off, but the character development in this era is severely under par when compared to the kind of character-based narratives that RTD was known for in his prior works.
Liv, Helen and Eight are so much more enjoyable now having been freed from the massive story arcs.
wow, haven't been early to a DAVIS vid in a while. I feel ya with 2024 so far
I am here to give Dot & Bubble its flowers. Beautiful visuals, dedicated wacky performances, big menacing slugs, Ricky September, and an Act 3 heel turn that punches you right in the gut.
As the lone defender of The Long Game, The Unicorn and the Wasp, and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, this story feels like it was made for me specifically
@@heatran1919 send it back to hell
@@SamyulDavis it's okay, I'll take it back with me, for its spot in the Vault of Episodes I Know Are Kinda Bad But I Still Love Them. Right alongside Sleep No More and Smile
i agree dot and bubble is peak
@@SamyulDavisI can defend it too. For me, the ending twist did save it. It turned a story about ‘social media bad’ into a story about how being trapped in a white supremacist bubble is ultimately self-destructive because not only does it leave you ill-equipped to face the real world but people like that would actually rather die than let someone different to them help them.
Also the episode targets rich influencers who basically do nothing but flaunt their lives on social media and I have to respect RTD for that. He may be a boomer but he is active on Instagram and I can tell he did his research (not so much into song trends though, I’ll give you that).
Why do Doctor Who comics seem to take place in shopping malls way more than any other mediums
10:26 Sam described a Doctor Who property as "TV annual!" WE ARE SO BACK
Broken record
Take a shot in every video where he says 'Best Tardis Team'
DAVIS finally seeing the light that the best tardis team is 8 liv and Helen. 8’s best characterisation with two polar opposite companions who manage to feel like such a close family
I really must get around to those 11th Doctor Chronicles.
Shut up everyone. New DAVIS just dropped
'Have a really good week'
As it's my last one before I start university I do hope so (and talking of good stories, hoping The Great Beyond lives up to the premise this Tuesday)
Two Davis vids in a month? And it’s not even Christmas!
Jacob Dudman is to the 11th Doctor what David Bradley is to the 1st Doctor.
Stuff of Legend was a real fun story, though I'm gonna be pretty biased due to recency and being there
I'm sat in the intermission of it right now! Super light, generic fun. I like that it's basically an accessible panto.
@@SamyulDavisSam as if you went Sunday eve, I was trying to spot you and Stubagful specifically on Saturday
@@SamyulDavis a doctor who panto is probably the best way to describe it, it was a load of fun and also quite impressive to see the va's perform.
Also shoutout the foley guy (at least on the saturday one) he did so damn well
What the original Celestial Toymaker was trying to do is done way better in Mind Robber.
After the recent surge of Doctor Who twitter being obsessed with Jeje watching Matt Smith's run, im very into the idea of the 11th doctors audio adventures
Rtd wrote the musical number in devils chord. Gold is a king with writing music. He’s just not allowed to now 😔
Just the lyrics though, right? It's the whole thing. Sonically hurts my ears.
I see Josh has an open casting call, DAVIS, tell me buddy how do I get on that?
Fun fact: the doctor dodo and steven met the celestial toymaker not even a week after the original story at an absolutely horrific halloween party. Its from Murder in the Dark from the book Tales of terror. Its really fucking weird
Gotta be awkward
@@SamyulDavisyes it is especially because he appears for like two lines says lne sentence and then the doctor and company fuck off
But its a great and incredibly gory story
I really needed this today thanks Davis and yeah I need to buy the eleventh doctor series but I need money for this unfortunately but I’ve been listening to the other best doctor who series seventh doctor and hex and comparing it to the new series and the new series feels like a draft of that series that wasn’t finished and actually it’s really similar
It's Michael Troughton not David just letting you know
Damn
devils chord does defnitely feel like RTD doing what he wants to, while the rest if the season feels like him insisting hes doing what he wants as he obviously does what he thinks is 'good' for the show in some way. seriously, the piano scene is easily the best moment in the whole season. more of this pleeeease.
17:50 holy shit, based
WAIT YOU HAVENT READ THE DOOMS DAY NOVEL?! 9 and Doom are kinda great as a duo. WOULD LOVE THEM TO DO A SERIES TOGETHER. literally the only thing I enjoyed from the Doom's Day event. And the slikeen are also there and like they slay as they do, its the slikeen of course they slay.
Slikeen
Godzilla X Kong ruled. Made the whole year
of the two 15 books the only one I've read is caged. it was okay - probably better than the average NSA - but it also kind of just felt like a worse version of molten heart, which is by the same author. the setting isn't as interesting, there's really no mystery or intrigue because almost everything is told to you from the beginning, the side cast are hard to keep track of and the doctor and ruby don't get much to do. the interesting premise of "what if an alien was abducted by aliens" is abandoned almost immediately. but it's not bad - mccormack is a good writer and it's light and fluffy enough to speed through in a few hours. the other one does look more interesting.
You had me at Dan Watters. One of the names to look for in this generation, greatly anticipating his upcoming Nightwing comic.
Comment for the mighty algorithm
Its been awhile since ive honestly listened to BF
Its hard to keep up with them.
Especially during the summer with their failed attempt to jump to a new website.
Wait Did I miss the group chat call out for this video? 😜
I could have so raved about Caged by Una McCormack. My favourite 15th Doctor story so far, easily.
ah damn, it was in our one! I'm reading Caged rn, would've been great. Will have to see it on your channel instead.
I listened to Victory of the Doctor first and blew me the fuck away, i haven't listened to the rest of the chronicles yet but because of this boxset i might give it a shot, best doctor who stuff of the year for me
YES THE DEVILS CHORD IS AMAZING
If their budget is that big, why can they still not afford a script editor?
Because RTD is.
@mayotango1317 speaking from experience, when you are your own proofreader and sounding post, you are asking for trouble
@@mayotango1317I thought that Scott Handcock was the script editor?
Or more accurately, a script editor that's actually brave enough to say no to RTD
@@joelmole3157 But RTD is the savior of Doctor Who.
He make the show more human and real.
I'd say so far for me it's Echoes, The Chaos Cascade, Goth Opera, Dark Gallifrey: War Master Part 1, and Susan's War: Family Ties. I wish I had some nice things to say about the new series but it was mostly fine with a dreadful finale I can't really remember much. I have fallen a bit behind with the books although Paul Magrs new book is sitting on the to read pile. There are two more Eighth Doctor boxsets to come which look interesting.
Once I get stuck into that Magrs line I'll never shut up about it again
@@SamyulDavis I'm already there.

I just feel very intimidated by the 8th Doctor and don't know where to start with the more recent Big Finish stuff.
I agree bring back Noobis, Gabby, and Cindy, come on Titan.
The Devil's Chord is such a fun and well utilitized version of this new lore and new Russell run. It feels kinda effortless.
Ive heard good things about the new 2nd Doctor stuff.
Everyone please, please, please check out the 11 and Valarie run its so freaking good. Just so many stories are bangers and it feels like a perfect addition to series 7. It very much is series 7.5. Jacob dudman IS 11 through and through. (Broken Hearts is one of my all time favorites of Big Finish) also I disagree with Josh, the finale story is probably the weakest.
Its always interesting to see what the novelizations add to the stories. (Also when is that next An Awful Lot of Running, its been 4 months)
73 Yards is good, you are all cowards. The Curse of Clyde Langer is worse. Love the mask Ben.
The Three Doctors but like really, really metal? Wild. I loved Scratchman so this seems right up my alley.
The celestial toymaker animation is wacky and I appreciate that they're taking a completely different and unfaithful take makes it work a lot better (like the Macra Terror animation does)
Evil! Evil! Putting a story we havent been able to see/hear on this list.
When did you last listen to 8?
@@sacrificiallamb4568 Ive listened up to Charley's 1st leaving in "The Girl Who Never Was" in the main range and like up to the 3rd season of the 8DAs. So not much.
@crpalstuck2966 4th season of 8DAs is really good, and I recommend it.
If you really want to catch up to current 8 stuff, you could jump either onto What Lies Inside (start of standalone boxsets for 8 again, though they do need some small guides on Helen and Liv) or Audacity (takes place before Neverland, add on pack for adventures with Charley pretty much)
3:26 ok? What happened
I live for davis videos 😂
The Curse of Clyde langer isssss better though...
What’s with the AI art?
Funny
