I can't tell you how many times I've bought clothes (new & thrifted) that just *sliiiiiiightly* didn't fit the way I wanted, and then going "Well, it fits good enough, I can fix it later" LIKE GIRL NO!!! I never remember and then I don't wear the thing! 🙈
I know gen z likes their plain white crew socks, but when i was an artsy younger person (in the 90s/00s), i loved wearing mary janes and loafers with funky patterned (or colorful) socks - especially sheer patterned ones, and I could see myself pairing the red shoes with some. I applaud how intentional you are with your wardrobe choices, though, this isn't a lot of regrets in the grand scheme of things! 🙌
Did this recently to a thrifted Brooks Brothers black wool sweater my husband helpfully washed for me. It's surprisingly better as a vest than a sweater. 😂💗
That red skirt is so good on you and I think the plaid is subtle enough that it's not giving like punk hot topic fabric vibes lol. I'm sad you don't love it. Hope you find the perfect one soon!
Okay, there are so many ways to fix the socks+ flat shoes thing: 1. Transparent socks exist. And these mesh socks sometimes come with a cut that will be completely covered by the shoe 2. Tights 3. Knee socks, maybe the longer format will look better But also, i think white socks with rooshes look amazing with these kind of flats!
Came also here to comment the same tip about socks in "tights material". I wear them a lot during the summer, it's a great solution for keeping your feet comfortable. (The shoes that were a little big without normal socks will probably still be too big with these since they're so thin, but you could amend by adding extra soles in the shoes. That is if you still want to keep them)
Also wanted to add: Soxsols. I think I heard about them from another TH-camr, but I use them as inserts for loafers, flats, even my Birkenstocks (so I don’t “ruin” the soles by darkening them with sweat), anything I don’t want to wear with socks
Also: there are gel inserts for support as well as adhesive heel inserts for shoes that are too large. Secondly: I started soaking my mesh shirts in cold water with a little detergent and hang drying them. The heat of a dryer seems to bake in the funk, haha. Hope this helps people! ❤
Some ideas for the boots: call around to local cobblers to get an estimate for heel cap replacements, the shape might be more common than you think! Also for the inner lining part, you can purchase leather filler/leather repair kits fairly cheap! Another option would be to maybe apply some sort of fabric on top?
I actually once had the inner lining of some shoes repaired. The cobbler used real leather to do so and it cost around 12-15€ (and the chunk was bigger than just that top edge of your boots). I am sure it won't be that expensive, you can just ask a cobbler and decide afterwards @beepworld :)
Came here to write exactly that. In Germany, this type of service is pretty easily available and not expensive for heel caps. I do hope you fix them - they are truly special and fit you so well
I repair vintage shoes for my Depop shop, and I can assure you that fixing that edge is not hard at all. I often encounter some vintage boots from the 90s and 00s with this issue. You will need sanding paper, heavy leather filler, and leather paint. Here’s what you can do: 1. Sand the faux leather layer off completely 2. Apply a layer or two of heavy leather filler, which you can buy online in small pack, so you don’t have to pay too much. Let it dry completely 3. Sand the new dried layer a little with a softer sanding paper for smooth texture 4. Paint over the edge. Make sure to choose self-sealing paint which means that the paint doesn’t need to be treated with leather finish afterwards as leather finish is already added to the paint. It secures the paint on the filler. The remaining product from the filler and the paint you can use for so many other shoes and bags, as you can repair scratches and tears with it. It’s generally good to have those products at home. Keep in mind that this advice is good only if a small area away from your feet is made of faux leather. If the whole lining is like that it won’t work. Also the result will not look like new leather, but it won’t flake and will look neat. Reading the reheeling of the shoes, I really doubt it would cost $80. The shape of the heel shouldn’t matter much, as the cobbler just can cut the new tip around the shape of the heel. I have dealt with cobblers for many years because of my vintage shop and it never was an issue. However asked the potential cobbler to show you some of their works, so you could see for yourself if they do their work properly (no weird gaps or wrong angled tips). And if a cobbler doesn’t reside in a city center or some fashionable area, the prices are usually lower. Last thing please don’t get rid of that pink bag, it looks gorgeous next to your hair 🔥
“Burdened by moral obligation because I bought it” = EXACTLY my problem and why I keep things that I don’t like 😖 This video is so cathartic and helps me see that I too can have “failures” but not let it weigh me downnnnnn
i know this is an old comment, but i just thought i'd share: what often helps me get rid of the purchases i'm guilty about is saying to myself "i don't love and cherish these pieces the way they deserve to be, but if i give them away, someone else could!"
Regarding the boots, just get the heels fixed. The peeling leather can be gently scuffed off with a little bit of sandpaper...play with the grits until you find the right one for the job (maybe 100 grit or rougher?). Good luck. You're really not doing that bad...you should see my cavalcade of mistake purchases! LOL!
I think it’s so cool and vulnerable to share this!! I am hiding shameful thrift finds in my closet and no one even knows I own them! I also paid 62 bucks to clean and repair thrifted boots (which were 8 bucks) and only wore them 3 times 😂 so my advice is to only pay cobbler fees to shoes you really want to wear a lot❤
Re: the boots, heel caps are a really inexpensive thing: I had two pairs done at once for $15. It definitely won't be $80 The peeling I have had happen too, and for the interim, because that also bothered me so bad, I purposely scraped and peeled it all off. And then it kinda didn't bother me anymore?
I think that the flats might look cooler with some ankle height frilly top socks, I have some and that’s the only way I like to wear them :) Also with the tight fitting mesh tops, my housemate swears by an antibacterial washing liquid to get rid of the smell which you could try if you really love the top Have you considered dying the red skirt? Because if it was dark red??? Slay.
I actually have a longer strap that attaches to that one!! I think the color is more why I don't wear it, but I actually just used it the other day after filming this video !!
I think the opera bag is beautiful, if you did want to save I feel like replacing the chain should be easy enough to do. But if you aren’t sure about the bag it’s probably not worth it.
For the shoes with socks problem- maybe you could try getting some invisible socks? Like the super short ones that aren't visible once you put your shoes on
I love to see the reality of buying clothes, it's a part that's rarely talked about so thanks for sharing and making me feel less guilty about some purchases
The pink bag would be so cute as a flower pot holder! Like a basket -- and then you can look at it more often without having to wear it. (Those self watering planters would preserve the bag too) Also recommend getting cotton bottom / mesh top socks for the shoes that are slightly too big!
For the silver shoes: Maybe try supporting inlays with a surface suitable for barefooted use? In Germany, you can buy ones at the drugstore that can easily be cut to size. It would not work for the red Mary Janes, but since the silver ones have extra room, it may make them usable.
Ok so it might not make sense to others but when people show how they made various mistakes I trust their other experiences more! Thanks for sharing! I’ve definitely been there with thrift hauls!!
For the silver and red shoes, you could wear them with no show flat socks....they only cover part of your toes and the back part of your heel, the sides are unnoticeable and this could fix your sock problem!
Here's an idea to potentially transform the white too boxy tank top? It would involve taking the ribbons off temporarily, but might be worth it! But basically taking the ribbions off, and then taking out some fabric in the front centre, kinda like a dart but not triangle just a rectangle? that way the tank top would be less boxy cuz it's a bit skinnier, and the armholes would sit flatter against your torso and not poke in your armpits! and you can but the ribbons back on at the end :) it might make the neckhole not as round, but perhaps the bow would also hide that? might be a thought
The shoes and socks issue: Look into getting socks that are "made to be seen", socks that are low enough that you don't see them with the shoe on, or you could wear them with comfortable pantyhose or pantyhose type stockings with a pattern in them. I have this issue with socks and shoes too. Although due to injuries; I have the added medical need for compression stockings. But that's a whole other ball game!
“I regret becoming burdened with X item” is really something I think about a lot (it’s such a thoughtful, potentially nuanced process to get rid of stuff and it’s easy to put it off when you don’t know exactly how to go about it
You can use a piece of wide tape to take off the chipping faux leather. I had to do that to some of my old heels. It doesn’t take too long. Although afterwards I wouldn’t wear them barefoot again. You can try wearing capri leggings under the red boots so they don’t stick to skin
"I become burdened by moral obligation towards that object and the need to get use out of it" This mindset is exactly why I follow you! There's a difference between consuming items and owning items and I am so here for thinking about clothes ownership as a responsibility
Take the pink bag to a cobbler/shoe repair place and have them add a strap to make it cross body! Also the orange boots would probably be like $30 to fix (in my experience with cobblers)
Have you tried those lil “invisible” socks made for flats? They basically go around your heel and toes but leave the top exposed. I know they don’t always stay where they should on your foot and that can be annoying but maybe some brand has improved the design by now? Maybe worth a try.
The beaded opera bag - a theater trick for you! Get some sheer, almost invisible tulle fabric or ribbon and wrap the chain in it. Prevents all hair catching. (People also use this on cosplay wigs, so in thatcase, protecting the hair directly.)
I actually LIKE seeing the imperfections and mistakes of forget people’s experience! Learning what not to do and feeling less alone when I do mess up is so helpful! Thanks for sharing
for the boots - maybe repair and sell them? that way you won't burden the next person with those chores but you won't waste your money on repairs for boots you won't really wear either! you could donate proceeds if you feel weird about selling them. they are such gorgeous boots, I feel like someone will fall in love with them!
When I was younger, a lot of my purchase regrets were about chest size lol. E.g. Many mainstream clothing stores make certain smaller/strappier tops that are exclusively for A-B cups, so no matter how much you upsize, they'll never fit (Zara is particularly bad with this). Now I can spot these pieces from a mile away, but it's kinda funny thinking back on what I used to try to squeeze into 😆
With the white tank top, you could cut the sides, take the bows off the front, and make new bows to make it a side-tie top. That should give you more armpit space plus make it less boxy!
I'd love to see you thrift-flip the gingham cardi into a sweater vest! it has the perfect grandpa chic look already. regarding the silver shoes, they are closed-toe so they would work with sock liners. also, I'd throw in a nice soft and absorbing insole. helps with the size and sweat problem :D the opera bag strap I'd replace with a velvety cord. I personally love the red plaid skirt so much but girl, whatever you don't like enough to make it work for you - pass it on and be happy
I relate so much to the feeling of responsibility for items you've purchased that you later realize aren't right for you 🥲 For the silver flats you could try no-show socks? Also I think the red Mary Janes would look better with fun patterned mesh socks or even white ruffled socks. I think with the plain white socks it does make them lean into the orthopedic vibe you mentioned
personally, i think getting rid of items you never gravitate towards helps free up space in your wardrobe to find that dream piece that will fit your desired style function!! since fashion is all about expressing ourselves we deserve to have pieces that we love, not just ones we settled for (via fast fashion or impulse buys) ❤
I've substituted hell caps and it was pretty affordable, but I am not in the US, so it might be different. However, I ended up not wearing the boots with the replaced caps that many times anyway 😅
My cheap fix idea for the orange boots would be to cover the flaky bits with a duct tape. You could even find a black duct tape that would match the inside better. And I'd call or pop by a cobbler to see how much it would cost to fix the heel cap. I've been surprised in the past at how affordable some fixes have been. Still may be beyond your budget for something you hardly wear, but knowing the actual price will take away the guessing!
For the flats/loafers, try some no-show socks. I do like the silver ones; I think you've worn them in some really cute ways, but tbh I agree about the red ones.
The opera bag: Get a new chain maybe just a thin brown or black leather one. You can even get it from a bag that is otherwise done with so you don’t need to buy it new.
i feel like for the "it feels gross to wear without socks/looks goofy with socks" part, you could try those liner socks with the grip on the back 🦦 ! you can hardly see them if you get the nude tone
For the white tank, I would sew multiple darts on the waist line to reduce the boxiness, and then I would add some lace to create a ruffle effect and some length
the orange boots..I have experienced what you describe with the lining & have been able to cut the flaky material off with nailscissors..it was easy & worked perfectly 💚
for the red boots , if cobblers dont have a shape to match the size of the heel they can cut it out of a sheet of material, they also might be able to repair the lining you can go to or call around for quote, its not super expensive, at least in my area to get the heel fixed, i think the most i ever paid was 20 bucks for 2-3 pairs. plus its a good way to support local tradespeople/business
you can paint brown on your bag, I think it's a heavy combination at all (pink+this brown) also you can try to wear your red skirt with boots another colour (not black, but maybe caramel brown, mustard, light blue or red, or yellow - colourful shoes are so much fun)
I don’t know where you live, but in LA where I am you can buy scraps of leather in the fabric district. Find something very thin, smooth and supple. So it is comfortable against you upper leg, and doesn’t make the top of the boots too tight! You can use a glue that works on leather with a thin coat on each facing side. (You can find this at the dollar tree, or even rubber cement might do…) If you’re lucky on your leather and glue hunt, it should only take a bit of hunting down and few dollars!! Take the boots to the cobbler for the heels. Good Luck!!!
For the red boots! You could buy iron on fabric for the lining. It’s sold in different stores, like craft stores or other places that sells tools and craft supplies or fabric (lindex also sells it now). It’s pretty cheap, and you just cut out a strip, iron it on and bam, you’re done. Some even have just glue so you don’t need an iron. You can even get fabrics that are smooth like leather. I like to use those for repairing holes in the heel of my shoes. Also, I think the irregular shape of the heel is not necessarily a problem, since they have to cut and sand down the heel caps anyway. Don’t know if this helps, but thought to mention it. Best of luck!❤
ok ok for the shoes i think you need a slightly taller chunkier/statement sock! like something with a scalloped edge or lace trim etc. and for the pink bag you should add some sort of shoulder/cross body bag so it fits your needs better!!
Frilly or sheer socks with the flats? especially with the marry janes. I think the opacity and sportiness of the socks are whats throwing it off. The idea of the socks is really cute!
1. can you replace the chain of the opera bag with one that doesn't snag? 2. Line the top of the orange boots with a strip of soft fabric. Cut the fabric to size, apply a spray on fabric adhesive, press & clamp onto the top of the boots until it dries. voila!
For the shoe problem why not try those cropped little socks that we call footsies in the UK? You can get them in nude colours. I wear them under my ballet shoes and they don't show .I love the red skirt on you but if you aren't comfortable it's not for you.
With the opera bag, you could have just switched out the chain for some other bag strap. In terms of the lining of the orange boots, you could just handsew a thin strip of fabric over the part that peels off.
the red mary janes are really cute, they look good with or without socks (also other types of socks and tights) they are not the typical preppy, delicate, classic mary janes, they fit more into the athleisure vibes that are trendy now, but problably it wont be in a few years the red plaid midi skirt is awesome, the plaid is so simple is basically a classic. The fit is extremely tendy right now (with the large band that cuts the hips) and fits you really nicely, for me thats nothing wrong with it the orange boots are amazing on you (when you showed first I gave nothing for it, but when you wore it: wow!) BUT if you don't see yourself wearing problably doesn't make sense to repair it though about the bags: if you really like the design is really easy to alter/add a different strap. the boxy white top is so easy to alter if you can sew, you can easily open more the armholes, if you want it less boxy you can take the side seams (then when you lift ur arms it wont raise beacause will be fitted) but if you want it loose you can add some ruffled (or pleated) white fabric on the hem (it can be short so it keeps the cropped shape, or long to turn into that kind loose peplum tops that's really trendy lately)
Ohhh my god the stinky synthetic problem 😩 I have a Beautiful long sleeve top from Kina and Tam that I can’t wear because within a minute it smells like a bag of dirty socks, even if myself and the shirt are perfectly clean beforehand! What is with that??? So sad
Ooh could you make the gingham cardi into a vest? Sheer socks with the silver loafers? Put mesh tops in the freezer or hang in sunshine to kill the bacteria that makes them smelly.
I think some frilly socks would go perfectly with either of those flats! They strike me as very dressy shoes, and I think you'd need a dressier sock to match. The plain white socks look too simple.

omg, I need you to know I did this immediately after seeing this comment and it worked PERFECTLY, thank you so much!!
Frilly socks would be a game changer! Change the chain on the opera bag! It’s beautiful❤
"I become burdened by moral obligation towards that object and the need to get use out of it"
This mindset is exactly why I follow you! There's a difference between consuming items and owning items and I am so here for thinking about clothes ownership as a responsibility
When I find shoes that don't go with socks, I wear very short nylon socks that don't show on the outside, maybe those could work for you!
Take the pink bag to a cobbler/shoe repair place and have them add a strap to make it cross body! Also the orange boots would probably be like $30 to fix (in my experience with cobblers)
The grey cardigan would be cute as a vest
I think adding a strap to the pink bag would be super simple!
You can buy individual soles in a shoe store and put them in the silver shoes to make them fit without socks:)
Maybe adding some white lace fabric to the bottom of the white tank would make it more wearable?
Ooo I would love a video on how to avoid/minimize thrifting regrets!
A red plaid skirt is what Alexa was lookin for I believe :0 she has an orange one that she regrets getting
Love the editing in this video! The freeze frame comic style description cards are so fun!
For the shoe/sock problem, what about tights?
wait why didn't I think of this.... I don't wear tights often but still this could be the solution!!
Or kneesocks or overknees made of tights material (better for summer).
I was going to say this too hahhaha, tights are always my solution! (But I'm a frequent wearer SOOO)
Wouldn't fix how ugly the shoes are
for the boots - maybe repair and sell them? that way you won't burden the next person with those chores but you won't waste your money on repairs for boots you won't really wear either! you could donate proceeds if you feel weird about selling them. they are such gorgeous boots, I feel like someone will fall in love with them!
I would wear black socks with the silver shoes, preferably with ruffles!
"burdened by moral obligation to that object" ohhhh you get it!!!
Somebody probably said this already but the opera bag chain is such an easy diy!
Just rub off all the bad lining at the top. Easy!! Once it is gone, nothing to flake. Rub with a damp cloth. Those a adorable boots!!
You could tape the inside of the boots with kinesiology tape. It's basically fabric with a sticky side.
I really like the silver shoes with socks, kinda unexpectedly fashionable❤
For the orange boots look for cobblers/shoemakers in your area, it's surprising how easily and cheapily they can fix things that seems impossible
the orange boots..I have experienced what you describe with the lining & have been able to cut the flaky material off with nailscissors..it was easy & worked perfectly 💚
for the red boots , if cobblers dont have a shape to match the size of the heel they can cut it out of a sheet of material, they also might be able to repair the lining you can go to or call around for quote, its not super expensive, at least in my area to get the heel fixed, i think the most i ever paid was 20 bucks for 2-3 pairs. plus its a good way to support local tradespeople/business
cuter socks for the silver flats!! colourful! frilled! sheer! patterned! ribbed! etc!
you can paint brown on your bag, I think it's a heavy combination at all (pink+this brown)
also you can try to wear your red skirt with boots another colour (not black, but maybe caramel brown, mustard, light blue or red, or yellow - colourful shoes are so much fun)
Good Luck!!!
if you spray witch hazel into the armpits of polyester tops it really helps de-stink them without staining the fabric
At least for the loafers, there are specific loafer socks, you could try, if you feel like giving them another chance.
You could possibly replace the chain on the opera bag with some sort of ribbon or thin fabric strap.
In terms of the lining of the orange boots, you could just handsew a thin strip of fabric over the part that peels off.
the red mary janes are really cute, they look good with or without socks (also other types of socks and tights) they are not the typical preppy, delicate, classic mary janes, they fit more into the athleisure vibes that are trendy now, but problably it wont be in a few years
the red plaid midi skirt is awesome, the plaid is so simple is basically a classic. The fit is extremely tendy right now (with the large band that cuts the hips) and fits you really nicely, for me thats nothing wrong with it
the orange boots are amazing on you (when you showed first I gave nothing for it, but when you wore it: wow!) BUT if you don't see yourself wearing problably doesn't make sense to repair it though
about the bags: if you really like the design is really easy to alter/add a different strap.
the boxy white top is so easy to alter if you can sew, you can easily open more the armholes, if you want it less boxy you can take the side seams (then when you lift ur arms it wont raise beacause will be fitted) but if you want it loose you can add some ruffled (or pleated) white fabric on the hem (it can be short so it keeps the cropped shape, or long to turn into that kind loose peplum tops that's really trendy lately)
For the red skirt, I would thrift other plaid patterned items I like and add patchwork and add a final tier to make it maxi. 🤗
Boots! Glue a piece of fabric over the inside flaky part. Find a cool contrasting print on a firm fabric and voila! Problem sorted ☺️
Try the shoes with bobby socks, ie., crew socks folded down. Or with little stocking sockettes.
Ohhh my god the stinky synthetic problem 😩 I have a Beautiful long sleeve top from Kina and Tam that I can’t wear because within a minute it smells like a bag of dirty socks, even if myself and the shirt are perfectly clean beforehand! What is with that??? So sad
for the cardigan, if you really dont like the sleeves, you coukd cut them off and make it into a sweater vest!!
Loved the stylized editing of this video!
Ooh could you make the gingham cardi into a vest? Sheer socks with the silver loafers? Put mesh tops in the freezer or hang in sunshine to kill the bacteria that makes them smelly.
I feel like I can see the red mary janes working with frilly/ruffled socks
I love the orange boots! Get the heels fixed and wear boot socks with them to keep the flakes off your skin. Keep the boots!!!!
I think some frilly socks would go perfectly with either of those flats! They strike me as very dressy shoes, and I think you'd need a dressier sock to match. The plain white socks look too simple.
Suggestions for the skirt: pair with other colors like blues yellows or greens to get away from camp rock realness?
The pink bag and silver flats are sooo cute
