      A legend, and always opening his videos with a nice, sincere smily "Hi!" Hehe, must have been filmed in the same time than the uktimate sin bassline video, he mentionned having made the experience of growing a "covid 19 beard" :) but he also said it itched, and he was already overweighing how long it'd stay on

    Hi Phil. I lost my bass equipment in a house fire over 20 years ago. Shortly after that I ended up having a family and just didn't get around to replacing it all. After watching this video, you have inspired me to pick up the bass again! I thank you for that. I really enjoyed this video and can't wait to get back into it again! I think I'll start with this song.

    Great rock bassline! It's rhythmically relatively simple but you made it exciting with the semitone steps and personal motifs & feel. Although a bass performance doesn't usually jump out of a rock mix for the average listener but the bassist counts a lot! Interesting how you mix the alternate and down picking in certain parts.

    The Ultimate Sin is a solid album. I just wish the mix was heavier. As I understand it, Ozzy had to fight with the producer to mix down some of the very heavy keyboards which Ozzy didn't like, so they had to fight to get it where it is. Ozzy and Jake wanted a heavier album. A lot of the songs, as constructed, are meant to sound heavy, like the title track. I remember when "Shot in the Dark" became a very big hit in '86. I was in 7th grade at Lincoln Jr. High in Santa Monica and had just started playing guitar that past year. Jake was one of my favorite players. I got this album shortly after it was released. I loved what Jake and Phil added to the album and would have loved to hear another Ozzy album with both of them on it.

    • @PhilSoussanOfficial
      @PhilSoussanOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comments Angus! It is interesting to hear your perspective, although as I remember it I don't think that the problem with the producer were keyboards as much as him getting us a very "polished" rather than a "raw" sound which made us sound like everyone else the guy had been producing! I do appreciate the compliments 🙂

    Great playing Phil. I have 1 question. In the music video for Shot In The Dark Jake was playing an SG ( which is odd since his guitar of choice is a Charvel ), did he play on any of the songs on the album with an SG, specifically this one cos it doesn't sound like his usual Charvel unless he was using a different rig. • @Me-gy7yk
    @Me-gy7yk ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video but bass is such a difficult instrument. I have the fretting technique of a manatee. I have very supple hands but put the neck of a bass (or guitar) in my left hand and I lose the ability to do anything but try to strangle the thing to death with a claw-like grip. Every bass player looks so effortless when they play, but I find it incredibly hard to do the simplest thing. Owned a 3/4 scale bass for 15 years and am as bad now as I was on day one.

    • @PhilSoussanOfficial
      @PhilSoussanOfficial  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wrote the song about 3 years before I joined Ozzy and it was written on the piano, in Bb, which accounts for the strange guitar tuning that was required. Jake played on the song of course, but he is not credited as a writer because he did not write the song! Writer credits and performer credits are separately defined; in the same way that I would not get credits for playing on the songs that he did write. Cheers :-)

    So why did you stab Jake E Lee in the back and get him fired from Ozzy Phil?

    • @PhilSoussanOfficial
      @PhilSoussanOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would be nice if you could enjoy the videos that I post for what they are worth without hi-jacking my platform for disrespect. I don't usually reply to rude accusatory allegations where people claim to have "read something" and then assume to know some kind of secret nefarious information. You cannot believe all that you read. No-one stabbed Jake in the back, or anywhere else for that matter. For whatever his reason, he stopped showing up to Ozzy's rehearsals, perhaps he was malcontent about something, and after several weeks Sharon let him go. That was the long and short of it, regardless of anyone's possible desire to re-write history. I voluntarily left about a year later to join Billy Idol. That was 35 years ago.

    Great stuff. I played this ina band about 12 years ago. It definitely opened my eyes to a new style of fill and runs in a pop song. Some of your later "phils' are very reminiscence of Bob Dailey's style on a few tracks from Ozzy's first 3 albums which makes me very a happy bassist.
    Both you and Bob and Zep's JPJ are all major factors in my personal style. Lots of meaty grooves with a tasty side salad of snappy fills.
    I will say, to your credit, the first Beggars and Thieves album was a huge inspiration on my playing. I actually learned that album right after buying my first Spector in the fall of '90. Super melodic and well written across the board.
    I loved watching this to see the variations you can do on a song. I found myself playing most of it similar to yours, but added a few smaller parts in the lower register on the higher strings.
    Did I earn my diploma? 🤘😎🎸

    • @PhilSoussanOfficial
      @PhilSoussanOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Johnny! Thanks so much for your comments! Indeed, JPJ was a very big influence on me! I always try to keep my playing with respect to those that came before me so that is what I did with Ozzy too, naturally I admire Bob's playing very much and have liked his playing in all the bands in which he has been!
      Indeed some sad clown wrote here sometime earlier that I did not play it as well as Bob did?!! ...LOL!!
      The B&T album remains one that I am very proud of and I am glad you brought it up - for that alone you get a diploma!

      @@PhilSoussanOfficial some people's kids. Ugh! I just moved home from Hollywood a few months prior to when when I picked up the B&T album. I was trying to reinvent my playing to be a bit more blues/groove/Badlands-ish stuff. When I found out you were playing on it, I jumped at it and it's one of my 10 albums if I get stranded on an island to be stuck with. The best thing is, the inspiration worked. It got me out of this bad hyper bass thing I got wrapped up in with this guitarist I was playing with. I wanted to slow it down. Smell the groovy roses. Haha!

As a bass player for the last 58 years, I am still learning from wonderful players like Mr Soussan. Aside from his obvious talent, he seems like such a friendly and patient man.

      Thank you for the very nice message! I do enjoy doing these and am planning on doing more of them although it is a little hard to find the time opportunity - I have to set up the room which takes a little while - but it is certainly worth it for those like yourself that have replied that they are interested! Many thanks again and best of luck always! Phil

    The man knows *the groove* (as he says, "lope" or "vibe"). It's what all great songs have, really.

    Mighty.
    I saw you play this in Belfast in '86 and immediately it was apparent how much more there was going on in the bass part than was obvious on the album.

    This is probably my favorite Ozzy song of all time. Around it's release I was living near Holland Park / Notting Hill area (on the street where Jimi Hendrix died actually, Lansdowne Crescent), and I was not aware that was recorded in Shepherd's Bush. A couple of year's back I learned the main guitar parts, and the guitar tuning is absolutely strange :D (at least to me as a shitty guitarist). Jake by the way is my favorite Ozzy guitarist by far, and love his Red Dragon Cartel stuff as well.
    This gave me a lot of new ideas for the bass, some transitions being a bit discoish even.
    I will be flying over from Finland to Vegas to see you with Last In Line in Vegas on Nov 19th @ Vamp'd. Any chance of Last In Line surprising us with this one as a special encore perhaps? Anyway all the best.

    I saw you with Ozzy in ‘86 in New Jersey. Didn’t know you were British. Shot in the Dark was Ozzy’s “pop song” all over the radio at the time, but underneath that pop melody was some mean ol’ thunder bass and Jake’s roaring guitar riffs. Me and my band mates at the time dissected the whole Ultimate Sin album, the bass, drums, guitar, and Oz’s vocals and declared it a masterpiece. Thanks for sharing this insight into a classic!!
