I have had my 90 TDi A2 for 10 years. It was remapped by Stealth back then and is putting out just shy of 120bhp and a huge lift in torque. The car is amazing, it pulls like a train and the mid range is fantastic. It's always fun when something a lot more powerful starts to push you on a motorway, just wait for a gap, plant the throttle and watch them slip back. Of course they will get you in the end but come on, this is a 1.4 three cylinder. The thing is, it does it with such gusto even after 10 years it's still a delight to drive. Economy has suffered a little but it's still into the 50's per gallon. I have had absolutely NO issues with the car during this time so if you want to set your A2 free I suggest visiting Stealth - you won't regret it.
iv got 4 of these.. in various states of tune and one with a pd150 engine in it... get some audi pepperpots on them your taking 23 kilos off the unsprung mass and its noticeable, also take the rear seats out if you dont use them... their like 34 kilos and only take 2 seconds to take out.. those two modifications will greatly enhance your driving pleasure in a way you will notice.. want to go further too replace the battery for a slimline one saving 12 kilos and remove the rear bumper support bar is 19 kilos. the last one might be extreme to some but fine with me. lastly the best modification i have done is to fit a ptw 6 speed box from a mk7 golf 1.6bluemotion.. transforms the a2 into a refined motorway cruiser.. think 80mph at 2000rpms... the box costs 500 though... 4 times as much as what i payed for the car. egr delete kit also helps with the roll on performance and reduces lag on the tdi75. i have to say a mapped tdi90 gives you a lovely torque shove from 1600rpms and up.. feels totaly different to a tdi75.
Great work again from Vince, though as expected with his vast experience within the world of VAG products and the A2. Thanks for plugging the forum Andrew, appreciated. Similar figures to my former TDI as I recall. Enjoy the unleashed power of the '3-pot derv'. All the best.
Your forum doesn't need plugging, it's an integral part of owning an A2 by all accounts! So nice to visit a motor trade business like Stealth that's 100% b***s*** free. It's like a breath of fresh air, depending where you stand when the dyno run is active of course ;)
Thanks Pedro! I was lucky to be offered this car by Audi UK. The condition is 100% down to their careful ownership as it's been theirs since around 2006, initially as a chauffeur car for collecting VIPs and in the last few years on their heritage fleet, available for members of the media to borrow. As a result this particular A2 turns up a lot on Google! www.google.com/search?q=audi+a2&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjmhZfCsKnhAhVPXhoKHY8CDe4Q_AUIDigB&biw=1229&bih=578
@@volkswizard Yep, I instantly recognised the car when you showed it in the video. Same colour and wheels as mine, but I've got a 1.6. Its impressive to see a 75ps TDI with just as much power, but loads more torque. How many miles on it?
I did consider a 1.6 but the mileage I am going to cover meant diesel was the way to go, the torque is just a bonus! Mileage is now approaching 38000 miles
@@volkswizard So it's a nice low mileage example, and it's a 1.4 TDI ( a 1.9 TDI block and head with one cylinder lopped off) so it'll go on forever. Plus the fuel economy is great and if your tune is that good then you'll have a very fun little pocket rocket. Cherish it! There aren't that many in good condition, and they're such well made little cars with a dedicated fanbase.
Andrew, so much fun to be had with a small quality car. See one of these every day and cheers me up just to think of the development engineering that brought it too production. Full marks Audi imo.
Great to see some decent gains on this little engine. I recently had my S3 remapped by a company called R-Tech and the results are amazing. Having 5 switchable maps available at the press of the pedal is a great feature, although I only use the 5th map for full power.
I had my A2 1.4 TDI 75 mapped by Vince a few years ago and was also very very pleased. It totally transformed the driving experience. Funnily enough, I came across this channel because I now have a Skoda Citigo (so was watching for Up! content). After watching this video of Stealth Racing, it reminded me of the improvement, so I am going to get my CHYA 1.0 59 bhp engine mapped (hopefully to around 85 bhp with more torque). It might well be the least powerful car that Stealth has mapped 🤓. Sandwiched in the middle of these two cars, I had a 320 bhp BMW M135i, so a little different in terms of power. The other two cars were/are still fun to drive though.......based mainly on handling and feedback. Also, I am no longer bankrupt at the end of each month.
I had a Audi A2 many years ago when they first came out for a day. As my Audi 80 coupe 2.6 was in for a service. Was impressed then as was different to anything else and still looks good now. Great video again and something different to see with more power gain. 👍
Great re map - 75 bhp not much to have fun with on a B road despite torque - now seems much more useable and great fun by the look of it - well done and keep smiling :)
I owned one of these to travel from edinburgh to aberdeen everyday. Same colour and interior, same engine. Transit vans would overtake when my foot was floored, very slow but cost £30 to fill an achieved 64 mpg all day long! Eventually needed a turbo at 192,000 miles!

I've had my A2 TDI 90 around 12 Years, not felt the need yet as top is quite long and burbles away under the three figures nicely,But I will never say never
UPDATE PLEASE! Having lived with the re-map for a while what are your thoughts? Performance & economy before & after? A2 is that rare beast that's built up to a standard rather than down to a price and hit bottom value wise before they start to be appreciated. Re-map would be key upgrade, do you know of potential suspension upgrades? Think rally rather than circuit: it would see plenty of action on rough roads in West of Ireland which VAG stuff doesn't do well, need properly supple setup.
Hi, the car has just been sold but I loved every minute of the remap, didn't affect mpg much at all, it can actually improve it unless you drive it hard using all the extra performance all the time. Before it was terrible, really, almost dangerous slow. Now it's better than adequate and can keep up with typical outside lane driving speeds on a UK motorway no problem. Only handicap is the gearing which is a bit short so above 80 mph (I'd estimate) it's not very relaxing. Easily got over 400 miles from a tank with a lot of urban driving which isn't ideal for economy, steady 50-65 and it would go much higher I think but I never drive like that! Rattles at idle but once you get going it's perfectly fine. Wish it had start-stop though!
@@volkswizard Thanks for the swift response. Chimes with what I'd expect, if you don't rag it extra power means it's not working as hard. Don't do too much m'way and tend to top out at 80 for a quiet life anyway. Any forums, sites to check out suspension possibilities? Lost a sump in a VW on a road I know - hell, on a _bump_ I know - at a speed that *was* perfectly sensible (& legal) in my Modus.
My 1.4 when mapped went from 75 to 102bhp and torque from 125 to about 175 ft lbs. still the slowest thing I’ve owned but it makes it drivable. Making it drivable is why I done it and makes overtaking on the motorway much easier

They aren't just still going, they are booked out for weeks! Vince wasn't too fussed if I filmed because he doesn't need any extra publicity hence why he wasn't in it. But he was helpful and patient with the filming process which was all I needed.
I recently bought one to stop using my B7 turbo for my commute and it's really adept at a 70-mile round trip five days a week. 75hp isn't electrifying, but the 3-pot warble keeps it interesting and it can move along at a fair lick on a b-road because there's surprisingly good mechanical grip and momentum.
I can almost bet you most off my medical insurance that in many many years. The Audi A2 will be every collectors list. That’s why I’m keeping mine as mint as possible B) So I can let my children’s children inherit my car when it’s hopefully worth a lot. Dear grandkids, if the A2 becomes worth a lot thank me. :-)
I don't have a trip computer and MPG depends on how and where you drive. To be honest even if they go down, I don't mind because the car is now fun to drive.
I need some help! I'm from the other side of the pond and the Audi A2 was not available here. Especially with the 1.4 tdi. Someone has dropped off a brand new 1.4 tdi at the technical school I work at and I am having a hard time finding what year it is and any kind of wiring schematic. I was hoping I could salvage a harness out of a 1.9 or 2.0 tdi. Its not a common rail and it does not have an injection pump hanging off the timing cover like the early tdi. The head does have a round multi pin connector in it with four pins used. I was planning on swapping it into something but have had a horrible time finding info on it here in the sates.
This won't make me popular with tuners but this is my opinion which you have asked for. I feel the Up! GTI already feels like a remapped car in that the chassis can barely cope with 115 PS & 200 nm of torque, particularly in wet so a remap mild or otherwise would be pushing it well beyond its comfort zone. The traction control is already hyperactive and clumsy in the way it deals with slip, adding more will only make it worse. And then there are the tyres. Even if you fit the best non-eco tryes, with a remap I can't see them coping any better than the stock tyres with the stock map (i.e. badly). Then there are warranty issues which VW have lost any sense of humour about and will do anything to reject these days (I know from experience). If you want a faster car, buy a 6C Polo GTI. I still love the standard Up! GTI package, well apart from the useless WLTP helping tyres, changing those should be the first place to put £400.
Is it the AMF engine in that car?, same engine in my 2001 1.4 TDI Polo if so, may get something like that done myself just replaced the original clutch after 160k, so no excuse now and if it all blows up it doesn't really matter anymore value wise.
Not yet, too busy fixing the aircon and door check strap but that will come soon, promise. Have done 4500 miles in it since February so it's getting used!
Hard to say as filming takes a while plus there were 3 attempts to get it as good as possible for my car as it was a custom map. I don't think the writing of the new map on the ECU took very long though.
volkswizard Looked torquey in second gear looked like it torque steered a little . I had a mk3 Clio dci 86bhp 200nm remapped to 110bhp 260nm and the difference was unbelievable on the motorway in 5th it was in its sweet spot overtaking was fun
Way more fun than a 2015 fiesta tdci, is it possible to up the rev limit as said fiesta is only on a 3k rev limit though not found a Ford specialist yet previously had an ibiza sport pd 100.
Does it come with cruise control or retrofit option available? To be the ultimate motorway mileage muncher I think cruise control is a handy extra. Thanks for the video really informative
100% spot on, driven daily, just done nearly 100 miles per £10 over the course of a tank full and a lot of that is urban or fast motorway so would do even better of I tried. The performance is just enough to be fun, it's how the car should have been from new. They'd have sold a lot more if it was!
Both good, I'd love a good FSI but many are worn out and lots suffer terminal misfires. TDI is tough but emissions laws are slowly restricting its use. I'd get a good FSI *but* chances are finding a decent TDI is a lot easier.
Good question. I did try and record a before and it was around 12 seconds which I thought was wrong (too slow) but turns out to be correct. I will try and record a 0-60 with the remap and piece it all together for short video.
Only problem with 170 is the DPF which now can't be removed or messed with so you run a big chance of producing more smoke with a remap and blocking the DPF up even sooner. Not sure how people are getting around this but I know many had their DPFs removed over the last 10 years but in May 2018 this became an instant MOT fail.

I did think about that but I wanted the best mpg possible and the durability as I plan to stick a load of miles on. I've got all that and similar performance now 👍
@@volkswizard its probably the best car out there for cost of running & mpg, great choose. Ahead of its time. I have a rare 1.6 FSI sport, with sunroof (works as well) & genuine 17" RS rims, harsh ride. Get about 45mpg from motorway/a roads. Low miles as well. Hard to tune tho. Enjoy your future classic!
To give it credit, mine will accelerate from 65 to 75 on the motorway at an acceptable rate without dropping to 4th. I also have a 2.0 T A4, and in realistic driving the A2 doesnt feel dangerously slow.
I'd like to try the remap version, to compare it with mine. I've been thinking for a long time about doing a remap on my vw polo 9n3, 1.4tdi, 69 hp. Great video 👍
I thought so, but actually is not to bad. It's great for the city. In the second and third gear the pull is good and it is really economic. Of course ride is hard and for me that's the worse thing, but it is a small car. When a car is full of people then it is much worse, but mostly I ride alone to work. All in all, a good car for city driving.
N K fair enough if you just go around the city i suppose what that car is made for but for motorway and country driving it must be crap ! any way enjoy your car 👍
Jim, all cars are different as they are mass produced so will vary. TDI PD diesels have always put out more than standard, in fact most cars do because customers won't complain about a bit too much power but can reject cars if they are under. The actual point of the video isn't to assess what the car came with as standard nor really what it ended up with but to look at the difference between the two. The numbers are actually academic though, the improvement in the driving experience is what really matters and the numbers if anything under play this (having driven it for a week now I can see it's even better than I thought at the time).
I’ve always thought about the Audi A2 as an ugly city car that doesn’t reflect the character of Audi. Back in the days, was a must for every car manufacturer to build a new car that was basically a little minivan. Luckily it was replaced with the Audi A1, more sporty and aggressive, like every Audi should be.
You must not know about how much of a technological feat it is, Audi were thought of more as an intelligent car company back then, instead of being like BMW or Mercedes.
Yes, I know all the technology inside that little car, the most unique one is that you can check the fluids inside the engine without open the hood. Also, it is made all of aluminum and that is an innovative way to reduce weight even nowadays. But I must admit, this car is ugly and is not fun to drive. That’s basically why it didn’t sell well. Audi was too ahead of time for us back in the days.
@@aian9597 Actually, my TDi90 is great fun to drive. All the weight's low down so it handles well. Not quite as comfortable as the Jag 2.7 S-type it replaced but it's a lot more fun and actually the back seat's the same size. The engine's half the size, it weighs half as much and returns double the milage. Only downside really is engine and road noise and it's crashy over humps on the low-profile tyres. Ya may think it's ugly but hey. it's super slippery. BMW looked to the A2 for inspiration when they designed the i3 so there's that. 145,000 miles down. Another 150,000 to go! :-D
They do but trying to find a decent one when the newest is 14 years old is impossible. Hence why I bought one of the best 75 PS examples remaining and spent a few hundred pounds on the remap.
@@volkswizard We had one of the first A2 on the road in the UK and remember everyone buying silver petrol models because of price and performance on the spec sheet but the diesel was better on the road.
Cars all vary as they are mass produced. Rather than risk some being under power, Audi make sure all are a minimum of the advertised power (in this case 75 PS) and some (probably most) will be higher to some degree. Bear in mind also that dynos vary from place so 82 PS there may be 75 PS elsewhere. It's the gain that's the important number and the way it drives is even more important :)
More likely its an inaccuracy with the estimated engine power from the rolling road. This is the same with all rolling roads but as volkswizard says its the improvement which is the more relevant part.
It's SO disappointing to see such a fine job done on content, but such an ABYSMAL job on audio. Your sound is comically bad. Not only is your background noise drowning you out, but your voice is a mere whisper, as if you're a golf announcer. Shape up, fog bunny!
Please get an update for your microphone too, before making any more videos.... The level of wind and background noise is really annoying. I lasted 3 minutes.
The video stays live indefinitely so it would be wrong to say the price on the day when 2 years later (at 10% inflation) it could justifiably be a good chunk more.

GTI package, well apart from the useless WLTP helping tyres, changing those should be the first place to put £400.
so how is it running now ... i bought a A2 TDI recently ... and interested in giving it a bit more boom
sold it but I am pretty sure it's fine, I did six months in it. Money well spent and helped resale.
@@volkswizard and what sort of league did it put the car into regards performance ?
Is it the AMF engine in that car?, same engine in my 2001 1.4 TDI Polo if so, may get something like that done myself just replaced the original clutch after 160k, so no excuse now and if it all blows up it doesn't really matter anymore value wise.
75hp wg amf, 90hp vnt atl
I had an A2 1.4 tdi
Was actually wicked
Would definitely buy another one
Did you add the parking sensors and extras you mentioned in the video where you unveiled the A2?
Not yet, too busy fixing the aircon and door check strap but that will come soon, promise. Have done 4500 miles in it since February so it's getting used!
@@volkswizard Good stuff. Currently considering an Up GTi (no new ones left it seems) and found your channel when researching. Keep it up.
is it expensive to do a remap on the Audi A2?..is the any improved fuel efficiency
It wasn't too bad, can't promise more efficiency but generally, as long as you don't use the extra performance available, efficiency can go up
Great video, hopefully getting my a2 tdi done soon by stealth
Has this got standard turbo or a tdi 90 vnt turbo
Standard
How long did your remap take to complete at the garage you went to ?
Hard to say as filming takes a while plus there were 3 attempts to get it as good as possible for my car as it was a custom map. I don't think the writing of the new map on the ECU took very long though.
volkswizard Looked torquey in second gear looked like it torque steered a little . I had a mk3 Clio dci 86bhp 200nm remapped to 110bhp 260nm and the difference was unbelievable on the motorway in 5th it was in its sweet spot overtaking was fun
@@volkswizard how much was the remap ?
Way more fun than a 2015 fiesta tdci, is it possible to up the rev limit as said fiesta is only on a 3k rev limit though not found a Ford specialist yet previously had an ibiza sport pd 100.
Does it come with cruise control or retrofit option available? To be the ultimate motorway mileage muncher I think cruise control is a handy extra. Thanks for the video really informative
How much did it cost ?
£300
How's this car running?
100% spot on, driven daily, just done nearly 100 miles per £10 over the course of a tank full and a lot of that is urban or fast motorway so would do even better of I tried. The performance is just enough to be fun, it's how the car should have been from new. They'd have sold a lot more if it was!
I wonder if they could tune a 2011 seat Ibiza 1.4 16v. 85hp is so slowww
Good luck with that! Non-turbo petrol engines don't tune easily. Best to change cars really :)
volkswizard I only ask because someone in the comments mentioned that they got their 1.4 tuned. 50+ torque would be nice tbh
Level you will get better midrange toque no chance at 50nm on top of what you already have though
Own 3 A2 3L's. Thinking of buying a 1,6fsi or a 1,4TDI. Any recommendations on which one I should get?
Both good, I'd love a good FSI but many are worn out and lots suffer terminal misfires. TDI is tough but emissions laws are slowly restricting its use. I'd get a good FSI *but* chances are finding a decent TDI is a lot easier.
What the 0-60 now? And what had it been?
Good question. I did try and record a before and it was around 12 seconds which I thought was wrong (too slow) but turns out to be correct. I will try and record a 0-60 with the remap and piece it all together for short video.
Wonder what they can do with a mk5 Golf GT TDI 170. Had a DMS remap on mine and it was a rocketship!

Get 1.6FSI version with 110HP stock. It was the best go-cart I have ever had. Pushed it to 170kmh on Autobahn :)
I did get one nad have just sold. Recently posted a video on it, it was quick!
I miss my Corrado so much! I miss it more than any other car I have driven and I have drive a lot of nice cars!
Great cars, VR6 still drives beautifully, rides well and goes around corners too - unusual back then!
@@volkswizard Yes, mine had upgraded suspension, front and rear stiffening bars, brakes, camshafts and chip software update and it was fantastic.
If you accelerate away from the traffic lights hard, do the people behind see black smoke
You should of bought a 1.6 fsi sport, very similar to U.P. gti in standard form.
Good to see some real World results in terms of 0>60. Always liked these, but the lack of standard power put me off daily-ing one.
Do you really do 0-60 sprints in real world driving?! I will see what I can do to log a 0-60, stock is 12 secs.
volkswizard of course! most have done it at some point...especially once they’ve made an improvement to their car.
N K jeez that must be REALLY slow.
It's a three-cylinder engine and it will always be loud and therefore not pleasant for longer journeys.
N K ye i get you
Great, das ding ,geht wie Sau, love it !
Honda Civic ep3 fast, cheap, very modifyable and long lasting engines!
Remap always a good idea
Missing my corrado...
Impressing torque Figures from factory
I don't trust the dyno results. Putting out more than standard when not remapped? More like the dyno is over reading to make remaps look better?
Jim, all cars are different as they are mass produced so will vary. TDI PD diesels have always put out more than standard, in fact most cars do because customers won't complain about a bit too much power but can reject cars if they are under. The actual point of the video isn't to assess what the car came with as standard nor really what it ended up with but to look at the difference between the two. The numbers are actually academic though, the improvement in the driving experience is what really matters and the numbers if anything under play this (having driven it for a week now I can see it's even better than I thought at the time).
@@volkswizard VW are notorious for underrated power figures on their cars (good thing I suppose)
Andy Lewis this is indeed a car that return a smile on your face. Even though is not funny to drive or super fast, she knows how to satisfy you
I thought they made a more powerful 90hp diesel.
Oh why would a car come in over powered? Remapped before ? Interesting
@@volkswizard Thank you. Very interesting and did not know that
No worries :)
More likely its an inaccuracy with the estimated engine power from the rolling road. This is the same with all rolling roads but as volkswizard says its the improvement which is the more relevant part.

I am actually Archie Hamilton's dad: :)
You sound a bit like Chris Eubank, good video though
I don't normally honest, it's just on video :)

Nice ad.
It's SO disappointing to see such a fine job done on content, but such an ABYSMAL job on audio. Your sound is comically bad. Not only is your background noise drowning you out, but your voice is a mere whisper, as if you're a golf announcer. Shape up, fog bunny!

Audi A2 sehr gutes Auto
Please get an update for your microphone too, before making any more videos.... The level of wind and background noise is really annoying. I lasted 3 minutes.
The A2 tdi is probably the very worst car I’ve ever driven in my life.. you’ve just put sugar on shit
You forgot to mention the cost
The video stays live indefinitely so it would be wrong to say the price on the day when 2 years later (at 10% inflation) it could justifiably be a good chunk more.
