I found that this budget was full of marketing traps/pitfalls/false claims of quality. Many companies try to push for higher sample rates such as 96kHz or 192kHz to try and give the impression of higher quality. Audio professionals know that this simply isn't the case and higher sample rates often lead to lower quality. This is due to intermodulation distortion caused by inaudible frequencies. Unless the AD/DA converters are world class and you have an incredible playback system capable of reproducing 0Hz-96kHz with almost zero distortion then higher sample rates than 48kHz will offer no improvement to your recordings, mixes and masters. Oversampling inside plugins is a different discussion entirely, as this is a digital process and often does lead to better results. TL;DR: Don't be fooled by marketing! The prices will vary in your country regardless of currency conversion. Check local dealers for up to date prices as this might influence your choice. after looking at dozens of TH-cam videos and websites, you're the first person that made me actually understand what Audio Interfaces are! thanks for the clear explanation
I am currently window shopping for a budget studio setup, this video has sealed my decision for the audio interface (Presonus). Thanks for taking the time to help us out.
My first interface was the Presonus USB 96. I wouldn’t recommend it. Within a few months the USB port at the rear became loose and the usb cable kept dropping out. The sound quality became very crackly. I always look after any products I buy so the issues weren’t caused by me abusing the interface in anyway. It’s pure garbage.
really useful that you're focusing on the user-friendlyness of the products and that you didn't spend time on the minute details of the audio quality, very helpful 🙏
Discovered your channel with the budget headphones comparison. This series is very useful but also interesting and for someone just getting into the complicated world of audio, the way you break things down and simplify them is excellent. If I ever start recording, I'll take a look at your recommendations without a second thought. Keep up the excellent work!
dude... THANK YOU for this video. I have actually watched it several times to determine which AI I would purchase. I ended up going with a Presonus Audiobox USB 96 because I am in Canada and that €70 is actually ~ $125-150CAD so I couldn't afford the ones listed as €100 as they are more like $200CAD. Anyway, I bought a bundle, mostly to get Studio One Artist included, and I was using my AI to play music on my Mackie CR3-X studio monitors and there was a lot of popping especially in bass-heavy trance music. I was pulling my hair out and Presonus support was... moving on... I installed, reinstalled, many times and always the same, on 2 PCs too. Arghhh... then I listened to this again and noted your comment on the Windows volume clipping at 100. So I tried moving it to 50 and turning up my monitors. BAM!!! It worked. It was clipping all along and I didn't know it. The popping sounded more like USB problems but it was "simple" clipping. So thanks!! You saved my experience with this AI. I was feeling very bad about my purchase until I (you) fixed it. /cheers brotha!
Most people just suggest you to buy the Focusrite. It is rare to find such a detailed video which even talks about the build. Amazing video! Thank you so much for this.
Those are built like tanks. Just add in a cheap Adam Audio or Kali monitors, and you'll have a setup worthy for a hobbyist. After that you don't have to lust for gear, instead focus on improving your skills. I
I can vouch for the PreSonus Studio 24c. Solid product. I got mine used and it's still going strong. Plugged in my guitar and zero latency once I realized what I was doing wrong XD
Though it's more expensive and out of the price range for this video's options, I think it would have been good to just mention that Focusrite does have a 2i2 version that retails higher and sort of makes up for the issues on lack of flexibility you mentioned for the cheaper Solo model, just in case someone wasn't aware of that. Anyways. This video was great timing. Thank you!
Man! You are the best. I heard so many 'experts' who says audio interface improves your export, reduces DAW latency or other non sense. At last someone who actually knows what they are talking about. From now on, you are my reference for audio related hardware.
I've been very happy with Presonus and Studio One for years. A friend switched over to Focusrite from Presonus and is also happy. Can't go wrong with those two
I have the same setup, in addition to SSL. Just recording jazz guitar. I don't think I need expensive gear. I'm pretty much a low gain guy and these provide me great clarity. I definitely need to improve my recording, mixing, and mastering skills though, people tend to focus on gear, knowing that's not the problem. You can't just buy skills.
i feel like some of these sellers might be subscribed to you so they can bring up their prices once you recommend them, lmao. anyways your timing is, as always, impeccable, as I myself (and it looks like some other commenters) had been researching these. Your work is phenomenal, thank you!
Thanks! Yeah it's very frustrating when the sellers see the video and push the price up but I hope it settles soon. It happens after a lot of my product reviews.
I recently bought the Evo 4 and I think that it is amazing for the price. I just love it. And once again, Michael has created a great video for all the beginers to choose between the various options. Hats off to you michael for your content
WOAH! Earlier I was just thinking if this channel had a vid about cheap interfaces because I'm planning to buy one and like magic, here it is. MICHAEL, YOU'RE A MIND READER MY DUDE!
Ngl Michael, last time you released the headphones vid when i was just gonna buy some. And you've just repeated that part with audio interfaces. Just love ya man!!!
So glad I decided to go with the focusrite 2i2, Its like the one u showed but about 20 bucks more, so worth it though as you get individual control over loudspeakers/headphones volume and u get 2, 2 in one XLR/Line-in inputs. Plus just too much software. Good video as always.
Fact Check! I believe the USB-C Focusrites still use USB 2.0 (all others too, probably, as anything above USB 2.0 would be more expensive to make), so the NI's 'old' B type connector is not worse in any way, as it is also functioning on USB 2.0. The new connector does not necessarily mean more speed. Finally, USB 2.0 should be enough for audio. I mean, look at RME, lowest latency, mostly on USB 2.0. So it's the drivers that matter most. And FINALLY, great vids man, thanks for making them!
Agreed. The mere presence of a Type C connector does not guarantee full USB C performance. That depends on the supporting electronics. The original type A and B USB connectors still rate as the most sturdy If a little kludgy to use. The mini versions were just OK but the micro were a disaster fragility wise. All of the connector designs post original A and B were driven by the need for miniaturisation by the mobile phone market not for durability. The type C has addressed some of the durability issues and you no longer have to look twice when plugging in but being small means it can never be as strong as the original A and B
The evo's digital dial is very useful for moving between my PC and Macbook. The gains and levels just save on the device, and you can also save presets 😊 I did love my 2i2 before it broke though! They're all pretty brill
I had one its very good for beginners, I had a bedroom studio and it was perfect, I have my own studio space now so I decided to upgrade to one with more inputs
Personally I’ve always found my Scarlette Solo has been amazing. It feels and looks nice, and recording quality has always been amazing even if I do only still have the second gen. If they include a separate knob for headphones and monitors on the “4th gen” or something in the future, I would honestly feel that it’s the best piece of gear for its price around. It could just be me but I find it sounds slightly better and more natural than the PreSounus, but I might just be used to the sound of my Scarlette.
Also I’ve found lots of monitors have their own volume adjustment knobs or faders, which work as a fix for not having the separate knobs for the time being, even if it’s not favourable to keep messing with that rather than it being centralised.
I closed my eyes the first time I heard the test and I agree I couldn't notice a difference they all sound great I guess appearance amd workflow will break it down and what color you like 👍🏾
I had a 1st gen scarlett 6i6. Bought a 3rd gen scarlett solo. Difference is HUGE. I absolutely love how 3rd gen is so much better (even though it's much smaller). I'm a lot happier with it. So just remember to check what generation/year the interface is from whenever you're buying!
I went with the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4, it addresses basically all of your hesitations for something like $100 extra. Two XLR/instrument combo inputs, two line in, four line out, midi in, midi out, and separate dials for monitors and headphones. Like I said it's a little bump up in price but I'm glad the guy at the store steered me towards it over the solo. It's allowing me to do some things with feeding audio into the interface and back out again that I wouldn't have been able to do with fewer ins/outs, even though it's just me I'm recording.
That is a real good review. I have only used interfaces when I record in a professional studio, but I am glad you showed some interfaces good for beginners
Great video, but I'd really love to hear your thoughts regarding latency, especially when using guitar and whether the mix knob (System/Input) actually works well enough to offset any issues. I'm specifically interested in the RTL for the Presonus, as it definitely seems to be the pick of the bunch. Cheers!
@@Delowist Haha! Thanks! For various reasons, still not got to the recording part yet. I have, however, resurrected my Apogee One interface and should hopefully get to recording some stuff in the near future. If I come across any problems, I'll be sure to give your recommendation a try. Thanks again :)
Thank you for this overview. It's gratifying to see someone give driver issues a mention. A friend of mine may be looking for a decent interface for music/voice recording in the near future, so this is very useful.
What i like about this video is that not 1 . yes not 1 company paid you in any shape or form to promote a certain product .... and i find heart warming in this day and age ... ;-)
@@inthemix What about the free version of FL Studio? Because the free version is not as complete as the paid version. Please answer my question, because I only use the free version. Thank you.
Hey Michael, thanks for the great work, really appreciate it! However, one thing I dont quite get - Why do you consider USB-B such a "bad thing"? I mean, I get that it's becoming obsolete more and more, but I've been using type B interfaces for a long time now and still am (Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 working charms here) and never had issues with any of them. I think as long as the interface does what it's supposed to do, it's not really a key factor what connector it has got, is it? No offense really, as I said I very much appreciate this video as well as all the other great stuff you put out there. Just curious on why this seems to be a bigger topic than I considered it to be. Cheers! :)
I agree, it’s a shame that it’s being made obsolete but I see that in the long term (10 years or so) PCs will have dropped the regular USB A and B in place of C.
B is better most of the times. Not all C ports are created equally, some are too shaky, it sucks. B is solid, goes deep and is more durable to me. C is so puny and tiny it's easy to break. Companies are going that route so people buy gear regularly, since C is weaker and will break regularly.
Just a quick note on the Komplete Audio. I have one and I completely agree with your review of it. Why did I buy it then? Because the internal hardware is superiorly built compared with the rest. There's a video of an audio engineer comparing about a dozen of these interfaces with signal analysis and the Komplete Audio showed better results, namely less L/R bleeding and better headphone signal. I'll be first to admit that those differences are barely noticeable and that your overall review stands on its feet, of course, just wanted to make this note because those are points that you didn't address in your video. Keep up the good work.
Like I said, the inputs and outputs were excellent. No doubt that it's a good piece of kit but I feel the whole product could be executed better. Thanks for the info though, it's good to hear from people who use it day to day and it sounds like it's ideal for your set up!
@@inthemix I appreciate your reply. I didn't want to come out as an angry fanboy. For what it's worth, I think most people would get the best bang for the buck with the Presonus. I have a gut feeling you'll agree.
Dude I been watching your videos for weeks, and luckily I found your channel and been learning so much from your videos. Thanks so much your the lifesaver, keep the good work up!
And it's priced much closer to the 24c than the solo... Which is why it seems odd to compare the solo I personally have the solo mainly because it was the only thing anyone had in stock under $200 and the used market required you to have amazing timing to catch anything reasonably priced
Just ordered the new audient id14 MK2 after searching the market for quite some time. With this interface I'm reducing my inputs but increasing the quality of my setup. My advice is maybe save some more money before getting a new interface. Nice comparison video. This will be helpful for the starting producers
It's above the price point you aimed for in this video, but when I replaced an old Focusrite, I went with the Motu M2, and have not regretted it. The lookback feature alone is worth the extra $$ for me.
You are the best youtuber that has so far given me back to back infos on what I need to know. Thank you so very much Sir . Your videos inpire my efforts when I think 🤔 of giving up...
Two years ago, I bought a Focusrite 2i2 from a retail shop. It couldn’t record the vocals & it was frustrating. The shop took it & later returned it back to me claiming it was repaired. It still didn’t work. Later I contacted Focusrite. They redirected me to a local distributor. They checked on it & said the repair cost would be the same as purchasing a new set. From there, I visited a local Yamaha retail shop & bought a Steinberg UR-22. It is still working till this day.
Hi bro. I hope you are doing good. Thanks for sacrificing your time and putting in effort in producing these videos. Keep it up!! But also remember its ok to take a break and reflect! Much love from Kenya.
I believe Mike's doing a great thing in shaping a future in which there would be a lot of artists that rise up and say that, "I learned how to produce from a TH-cam channel called IN THE MIX."
Thank you so much Michael for this amazing video, I waited for so long for PreSonus Studio 24c's comparison. Now I can finally upgrade or wait for the giveaway :)
The interface I never see is the Behringer UMC 22 U-Phoria. It is cheap, it feels cheap, but it doesn't sound cheap. I bought it as my first interface 2 years ago planning to upgrade down the line. Never have and probably never will. It suits all my needs. Still, great review and good on you for making this video.
The Focusrite would definitely be a steal for me for recording my bass. One of the investments I wanna make towards upping the quality of the content on my channel. Great video man!
Hey! Me and my buddy, we own Focusrites Scarlett 2i2 2nd gen (so it's bigger than the one showcased in this video), so maybe this will help you make a decision. This interface has two mixed inputs, a monitor knob separated from the headphones knob. It has basically the same functionality as Presonus Studio 24C but it's more compact. I recorded vocals on it using an SM58 and my friend used to record guitars. Super easy to use. I wish you a good interface for your artistic endeavours! Cheers
Am moving house & setting up a home studio - in Australia ! Love all of Michael 's videos - not too long & not too short - I think I feel another song coming on. Catch ya.
Im so into portability. I travel alot with my stuff and thought the focusrite solo could be the winner. But I actually have an older one still at home and think about waiting for a newer version.. Always think about "Do I really need one?" Because most of the time its just sexy to buy, but maybe you already have everything you need ;)
I found that this budget was full of marketing traps/pitfalls/false claims of quality. Many companies try to push for higher sample rates such as 96kHz or 192kHz to try and give the impression of higher quality. I had one its very good for beginners, I had a bedroom studio and it was perfect, I have my own studio space now so I decided to upgrade to one with more inputs
By FAR the best detailed comparison I've seen of these interfaces, thank you for the video.
It has separate knobs for headphones and monitors though, on 2i2 at least. No need for new gen.
What is your system, PC or Mac?
the quality of your toturials is much more better than before !
Appreciate the vid was debating this for a while
I closed my eyes the first time I heard the test and I agree I couldn't notice a difference they all sound great I guess appearance amd workflow will break it down and what color you like 👍🏾
I had a 1st gen scarlett 6i6. Bought a 3rd gen scarlett solo. Difference is HUGE. I absolutely love how 3rd gen is so much better (even though it's much smaller). I'm a lot happier with it. So just remember to check what generation/year the interface is from whenever you're buying!
But in terms of HP performance, the 3rd generation is shit compared to the previous 2 gens
@@botzer8817 hp?
I feel like Im in a meditative state when I listen to you. Your voice is super calming lol
i would love to see the same kind of video for monitor speakers especially eris 3.5 and that range ones
Please make a video on how you record sound for youtube ! It's amazingly good 😍
I would love to see this guy in Andrew Huang's 4 Producers 1 Sample Challenge 😀🙏🙏
That would be sick 🔥
he is not producer he is more like engineer
I doubt he would be interested to be honest.
@@isaacnewton5543 He's more of a teacher-engineer.
Thanks for this video 🙏 Always the best advices for the community 🤗
Best video for buying an interface this is why i bought the presonus 24c and it works clean with cubasis 3 👌
Listen to the noise and tone of this pre-amp lol :D
Literally couldn't think of anything better to say
@@inthemix haha lols
Thank you for this overview. It's gratifying to see someone give driver issues a mention. A friend of mine may be looking for a decent interface for music/voice recording in the near future, so this is very useful.
A year ago I convinced a music store that their Avid Fast Track Solo was outdated and managed to get it for 25 bucks new. 😂
thank you for your recommendation!
Perfectly explained, as usual! Thanks a lot! What do you personally think about the M-Audio Interface AIR 192|4?
glad you're back, i've been learning much things from you , can't wait to see more videos
You should make Amazon affiliate links for these so we can support you if we buy them!
An excellent survey and presentation of highly affordable options. Very well done.
as long as it mixes and masters my tracks for me
What i like about this video is that not 1 . yes not 1 company paid you in any shape or form to promote a certain product .... and i find heart warming in this day and age ... ;-)
I still use those midi-ports quite a lot, so the PreSonus Studio24c wins for me.
I'm glad some companies haven't forgotten how important they are for some of us! PreSonus really crammed everything that they could into it
@@inthemix What about the free version of FL Studio?
Because the free version is not as complete as the paid version.
Please answer my question, because I only use the free version.
Thank you.
Thank god for this. Everyone's videos about mics and interfaces are entirely about podcasting which is NOT a parallel
I prefer type B , it's more solid and the cable holds better
Which one is better?: Presonus Studio 24c vs Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
In my testing the presonus works better for my needs.
Dude I been watching your videos for weeks, and luckily I found your channel and been learning so much from your videos. Thanks so much your the lifesaver, keep the good work up!
For another $50, you can grab the Focusrite Scarlett 2I2, all of the pros are still there AND it fixes all the cons.
And it's priced much closer to the 24c than the solo... Which is why it seems odd to compare the solo
I personally have the solo mainly because it was the only thing anyone had in stock under $200 and the used market required you to have amazing timing to catch anything reasonably priced
I have the FocusRite 2i4 and I love it. Thank you for this excellent review as always and for confirming my choice!
Really helpful informative video without any heavy shilling. Much appreciated dude!
Thanks for keeping us updated Michael.
Thanks Jonathan! I also posted your giveaway prize yesterday, The microphone should be with you very soon!
Wooah love that headphone
@@inthemix Awesome! Thanks Michael
Just ordered the new audient id14 MK2 after searching the market for quite some time. With this interface I'm reducing my inputs but increasing the quality of my setup. My advice is maybe save some more money before getting a new interface. Nice comparison video. This will be helpful for the starting producers
i've been going thru alot of reviews and the ID4 baby brother of the 14...looks great for the money u spending
Onscreen chapters are not new on your channel, but let me thank you now.
They are really useful and make the video even more pleasant to watch.
Man you're real one. Top quality videos, from the content to the video itself, everything is always done so well. Thank you :)
It's above the price point you aimed for in this video, but when I replaced an old Focusrite, I went with the Motu M2, and have not regretted it. The lookback feature alone is worth the extra $$ for me.
The Motu M2 seems to be an incredible interface. It’s been sold out for 8 months in my country. I can’t get my hands on it!
Thanks for the vote of confidence in my very likely pending purchase of the Motu M2. :-)
Dude awesome video I do think you should have used the focusrite 2i2 instead of the solo it’s the number 1 selling “budget” audio interface
Excellent video! This guy is a Pro!
Thanks for the video, I am going to go with the PreSonus 24c for my first unit to learn with.
You are the best youtuber that has so far given me back to back infos on what I need to know.
Thank you so very much Sir . Your videos inpire my efforts when I think 🤔 of giving up...
Hi! I'm glad you got back to the studio. I have a SSL 2+.
I got the Evo 4 mainly for one thing: The XLR input is on the back.
Everything else is a feature.
Could happen to any brand. I've 2i2 for 4 years now, and it's still working.
@@bassyey Possible. Better get a product from a reputable store & etc.
Very genuine review. I liked how you explain the what and why. Thank you.
just bought the PreSonus based off this review as an upgrade from my Forcusrite 1st Gen- nice work bud.
Hi bro. I hope you are doing good. Thanks for sacrificing your time and putting in effort in producing these videos. Keep it up!! But also remember its ok to take a break and reflect! Much love from Kenya.
Few months ago i started to decide which interface should i buy first . Really thankful about this vid
I believe Mike's doing a great thing in shaping a future in which there would be a lot of artists that rise up and say that, "I learned how to produce from a TH-cam channel called IN THE MIX."
You've got a great channel here, mate. Greetings from Italy.
Solid, thorough and to the point. Very nice.
Cheers
@@33BiGBoB33 yes the 2i2 is also great!
Am moving house & setting up a home studio - in Australia ! Love all of Michael 's videos - not too long & not too short - I think I feel another song coming on. Catch ya.

Best production info channel on yt
You make such great videos, thank you!!
Im so into portability. I travel alot with my stuff and thought the focusrite solo could be the winner. But I actually have an older one still at home and think about waiting for a newer version.. Always think about "Do I really need one?" Because most of the time its just sexy to buy, but maybe you already have everything you need ;)
