Apollo 11 Part 3: Coming Home

  • Apollo 11 Part 3 of 3 "Coming Home". Videos were created in the free animation software tool called Blender. All models and animations were created by me. Textures of the Earth and Moon are from NASA.
    Related videos:
    Apollo 11 Part 1: All Engines Running ( • Apollo 11 Part1: All E... )
    Apollo 11 Part 2: One Small Step ( • Apollo 11 Part 2: One ... )
    Major scenes include:
    1. Lunar launch of LM into orbit.
    2. Rendezvous of Lunar Module (LM) with Command Module (CM)
    3. Clean and Dry check of Command Service Module (CSM). This is where the CSM rotates around so the LM can inspect the vehicle. Note...I am not sure that Apollo 11 actually did this....but many if not all the subsequent Apollo missions did.
    4. Docking behind the Moon
    5. Jettison the LM. Note that the LM is now in an interesting configuration. The docking drogue has been removed since they don't need it anymore. Because of this, you have a clear shot of the top of the upper Hatch. Also as part of the jettison cycle the CM docking ring/latches remains attached to the LM. The latches are blue.
    6. Trans Earth Injection (TEI) burn back home
    7. Separation of CM from Service Module (SM). I actually took the time to animate the reaction control system (RCS) for this event. In most videos that I watched, you can rarely see the RCS exhaust plumes. The SM RCS fires to put distance between the CM and SM and also induces a roll. The CM fires its pitch RCS to get into the proper reentry position. During separation, a pyrotechnic guillotine severs the connection between the CM and SM and the Umbilical Assembly rotates back. This is followed by another explosive guillotine that separates the SM from the CM.
    8. Reentry. The friction heat up the hull. The hull has a shiny coat which wears off during reentry. I gave it my best shot trying to animate what this may look like going from very shiny to dull and charred. The CM does several roll maneuvers to control its lift vector which can make the entry more steep or less shallow or induce some cross range.
    9. Parachutes. There are 9 parachutes total. I animated them all but some you only see for a very short time. The apex cover (top of the spacecraft that shields the parachutes and mortars) is jettisoned at 24,000 ft. The apex cover has its own parachute. The 2 drogue chutes deploy 2 seconds later to slow and stabilize the CM for about 10 seconds before they are cut loose. This is followed by 3 mortars firing 3 small pilot chutes whose purpose is to drag out the very large orange and white main parachutes. No...I did not take time to animate the altimeter that is clearly in view by the forward left window. The altimeter has marks on it to note when each parachute event is triggered.
    10. Splashdown. CM lands and immediate turned over upside-down (Stable 2). Not all CMs flipped over....but Apollo 11 did. This is followed by an air compressor inflating 3 floatation bags used to flip the CM to Stable 1. Turns out that the Apollo built in compressor was an off the shelf compressor. So when adding sound, I used standard compressor and hissing noises.

    I remember how scared I was watching all the key parts of this flight and landing; after all these years, I never knew that a set of parachutes deployed before the iconic red and white ones. Bravo on such a superb animation.

    The audio is so much cleaner than the original, we hear the whole event unfold. The audio editing is excellent, giving a natural progression of events without the long spaces of dead air.

      Thanks for watching and your comment. I can't take credit for the clean audio. I grabbed it directly from NASA with no cleaning involved. But I can take credit for the editing and choosing what audio to mix with my video. I listen to a lot of audio and it takes quite a while to figure out what I want to mix. Sometimes I get it right and other times I do not. Regardless, thanks much for noticing!

    It's interesting that the heating on the heat shield isn't because of the air friction. The high velocity compresses the air in front of the re-entry vehicle so much it is super-heated. It's the radiant energy from this compressed, superheated air that heats up the heat shield.

    That is the absolute best visualization of re-entry that I've ever seen done. Even "Apollo 13" didn't get it right. They did it with fire more or less. You got it right! Your's looks more like the kind of plasma that would have been generated during the ionization period. You more or less even got the colors of the plasma right. It was breathtaking watching as the CM entered the Exosphere, and the color gradually changed to light blue. I mean I actually think I lost my breath for a second! I'm Awestruck! I can't wait for your next project. Please tell us you have another project on the horizon. GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!

      Thanks for your comment. Please subscribe if you haven’t. Also notice that during the reentry I gradually char the CM. I assume 6pm have also seen Part 1 and 2. Part 1 was revised ( you can still see the old Part 1) mostly in response to viewer comments. Part 2 is currently under revision. I may still do some further revisions due to additional comments. But when complete ther was interest by some for me to do a detailed tour of the instrument panels and what they do.

I watched it on my large desktop screen, a 55'' LCD TV, with my huge amp and loudspeakers blasting those thunderous roaring sounds... what a show! I felt nervous, like I was part of that mission! Positive stuff like this is the reason that keeps me from leaving youtube! I quickly subscribed without hesitation! This must have taken a s**t load of hard work to do these animations! Then, I checked what kind of creds someone could have to be able to pull it off like this... I laughed so much, as I rapidly found out the answer! To say that you have the abilities, experience, qualification, competence or whatever that makes you suitable to do these animations is a huge understatement! This is next level! Keep up the good work! 👍

    Stunning representation! Love how you synced with MCC
    I don't know if anyone has already mentioned it, the command module hit the ocean at an angle, basically from the astronaut's reference, feet first. That "corner" of the bottom of the capsule was crushable, to soften the impact when it hit the water at 20MPH. Like how your car's front end collapses in a head on collision to keep the passenger compartment intact to prevent major injury to the passengers.

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and thanks for you comment! I think the primary purpose was to have a CG that was off center so the computer (or pilot in an emergency) could control the roll during reentry which would roll around the lift vector to either give them cross range ability or to adjust the angle of reentry. I think what you are talking about is a side benefit for that. I was not aware that one corner was more crushable than the rest.

    Thanks for this one Drew. This is remarkable. Amazing work you’ve done here. The documentary brings it alive so much more. Bearing in mind what happened with Apollo 13, it hard to believe that nothing went wrong on Apollo 11 or 12. Everything went so smoothly. It’s a real testament to NASA’s ingenuity and technological noux. Wonder where the Eagle landed the second time. I’d be interested to know. Wonder if they will ever go back to its crash site, or come to that any of the crash sites from the Apollo series, perhaps even to clear up the mess left behind. Thanks once again. I’ve subscribed! Take care.

      Thanks for your comments and subscribing!! I think all but one of the intentional Apollo ascent stage crash sites are known). @@opieswenson That’s amazing. If Eagle is still in orbit, it would be good to capture it and bring it back to Earth. It would be as precious as the landing capsule. For the most part it was automatically done but the EMS gave them the ability to monitor that all was ok. And if not, they could manually take control to roll the spacecraft to change the lift vector which would shape the trajectory. nassp.space/index.php/Entry_Monitoring_System

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not try to align actual orbits with the earth or moon. I believe that it was feet up most of the time. The CDR and or the computer controlled the roll angle to shape the cross range and descent angle with the lift vector. I don’t show the whole decent in my video…but I do try to illustrate the roll during reentry. With that said, I will most likely open up part 3 for editing. One thing I have been doing in my edits is putting in the proper sun angle ( all messed up in my original videos) and putting in RCS bursts. The interesting thing about RCS bursts….you rarely see them fire in real life. So I am taking artistic license to show that the RCS is actually firing

      @@opieswenson Thanks for your fast reply. Still I think Mt. Hadley does not belong in Eagle's background, though.
      Of course I've noticed that the maneuvers for establishing the coelliptic and constant differential height are missing, but I do not recall which of them occurred on the far side.

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrRolotube Thanks much for your comments. Yes...Hadley probably did not belong on the path. Like I said, I made no attempt to properly align the orbital path over the moon. I do show the launch including the pitch over . That timing and amount of pitch are correct. I do not show the full amount of ascent engine burn and I do skip over the coelliptic and CDH maneuvers. The rendezvous terminal phase as seen from the CM was eyeballed from looking at the actual video. The clean and dry check of the CSM as seen from the LM probably did not happen on Apollo 11 (at least no footage I can find) but it did happen on other Apollo missions.

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is the earth, same thing you see at time 1:06. With that said, the Apollo 11 series is from my earliest Blender work as I was learning the software. The earths position in this video was not correct. A11 also did not land amongst the hills, but in my early Blender experience, that was what I used to hide that I could not use a full size moon. My A11 part 2 was made after the video you watched and I placed the earth more correctly and used a different technique for the terrain where the LM landed. In part 2, I modified a picture of the landing site to make it look like terrain. Thanks for watching and your question.

      @@СергейФилиппов-ч1й I am sorry you did not like it. Because these are the types of animation that I do, I would recommend not to follow me on TH-cam. Good luck finding material that you enjoy.

      Was it the word "Animation" in the intro screen that gave it away, or did it take you until the end of the video to figure it out?

    Why did you put sound on the LM liftoff? No sound in the vacuum in space or on the moon.

      Yes…I am aware…chalk it up to artistic choice.. or perceived sound coming from inside the cabin
