Apollo 15 Part 3: ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package) Deployment
Apollo 15 was the ninth crewed Apollo mission and the fourth to land on the Moon. It was also the first of the J-missions designed for a longer stay on the moon and was the first flight with the lunar rover.
ALSEP: consisted of 2 scientific instrument packages capable of transmitting back to earth for 1 year. Data from the package was used to derive information regarding composition and structure of lunar body, its magnetic field, atmosphere and solar wind. ALSEP power supplied by radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG). The fuel capsule was stowed in a graphite cask on the side of the descent stage. The capsule was removed from the cask and installed in the RTG on the moon.

Part 2: Rover Deployment ( th-cam.com/video/VlJspdHEYAs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JZAptlnQE5MUeO1S)
Part 3: ALSEP Deployment (this video)
Crew:
- David Scott (CDR): 3rd and last spaceflight (Gemini 8, Apollo 9)
- Alfred Worden (CMP): only spaceflight
- James Irwin (LMP): only spaceflight
Dates:
- Launch: Kennedy Space Center Pad LC-39A July 26, 1971
- Lunar Landing: Hadley-Apennine July 30, 1971
- Lunar Launch: August 4, 1971
- Recovered: North Pacific Ocean August 7, 1971
Apollo Lunar Module Descent Stage Quadrants:
- Quad 1: folded lunar Rover (LRV)
- Quad 2: ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package)
- Quad 3: Rover aft tool pallet and payload pallet
- Quad 4: MESA (Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly)
Lunar Module “Falcon”
-Only LM that landed on the moon piloted by an Air Force pilot (all others
piloted by Navy Pilots).
-Landing hit hard but within limits and landing in most challenging terrain
(local terrain slope was 11 degrees). Landing gear designed to land on
slopes up to 12 degrees.
-Final rest angle was 6.9 deg pitch up & 8.6 deg right roll.
-Longer descent engine nozzle buckled on landing but not due to impact
but due to a buildup pressure in the nozzle due to thrusting in close
proximity the the lunar surface.
-All lunar modules have gear legs that only stroke once with no rebound.
Falcon gear legs stroked 1 inch on landing except for the front gear
which stroked 3 inches. But in the final rest position, the front gear was
not touching the ground.
Lunar Rover:
- Manufacturer: Boeing/General Motors
- Electric Motor: 0.25 HP DC motor on each wheel - Transmission: 80:1
harmonic drives
- Range: 57 miles
- Weight: 460 lbs Earth, 76 lbs Moon
- A15 total time driven: 3h 2 min
MESA: deployed from a D-Ring near the porch. MESA contained, extra PLSS batteries, LiOH cartridges, TV camera, still cameras, geology tools, food, film, and sample containers.
J-Mission Modifications Most of the modifications involved making more room in Quad 1 for the LRV and Quad 4 for the enlarged MESA and additional water and GOX tanks. Modification to Lunar Module for J-Missions include:
- S-band erectable antenna moved from Quad 1 to Quad 4
- relocated Explosive Device relay box and pyro battery to provide Quad 4
clearance for additional water and GOX tanks
- modified MESA support in Quad 4.
- batteries and electrical control assemblies relocated from Quad 1 and 4
to -Z bulkhead (aft gear leg)
- modified RCS plume deflectors (shortened) to provide protection to
enlarged MESA and LRV addition.
- modified ascent stage support structure for increased provisions.
- cleared all previous equipment from Quad 1 for LRV
- insulated docking tunnel to reduce cabin heat leakage
- added controlled bleed vent for descent super critical Helium
- added 10 inch fixed nozzle extension for descent engine to provide
additional efficiency at full thrust
- removed descent propellant tank balance lines
- saved 25 lbs by removing thruster isolation valves - added additional
battery to -Z bulkhead (along with the 3 other relocated batteries). This
gave a total of 5 batteries
- added capability to recharge PLSS
- added 1208 lbs of usable descent propellant (18,697 lbs total propellant)
- added 3rd sample return container
Animation notes:
- Animation done in Blender with all models built by me with the following
exceptions:
-- Earth and Moon Textures from NASA
-- lunar gloves modified from Smithsonian's scan of Apollo gloves
-- human heads downloaded for free from Turbosquid (www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/...)
- Used 30 FPS for rendering
- Used the lower quality EEVEE engine to reduce render times
- I have the Falcon lunar module level on the moon to ease some of my
animation.

Wow! What a ride I just took! This is absolutely amazing! I watched it on my large desktop screen, a 55'' LCD TV, with my huge amp and loudspeakers blasting those thunderous roaring sounds... what a show! I felt nervous, like I was part of that mission! Positive stuff like this is the reason that keeps me from leaving youtube! I quickly subscribed without hesitation! This must have taken a s**t load of hard work to do these animations! Then, I checked what kind of creds someone could have to be able to pull it off like this... I laughed so much, as I rapidly found out the answer! To say that you have the abilities, experience, qualification, competence or whatever that makes you suitable to do these animations is a huge understatement! This is next level! Keep up the good work! 👍

What did you base this off of?

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

Pictures and video from various online sources and drawings from multiple Skylab manuals on NASAs NTRS online web page. If you are asking what did I render this with, I used Blender which is a free drawing and animation software.

@@jhgattis That was actually really difficult. Mostly from looking at pictures of the 2 Skylab mockups/spares in museums. The pictures were not always clear. If I remember right, I think I looked at skylab packing document of some sort on NTRS which showed what was supposed to be stored in each locker. Then tried to match that up with blurry photos. I actually went to the Air and Space Museum to take my own pictures but that part of the museum was still under renovation when I was doing this project.

Very nice looking animation, but the timing on all of the swing arms moving is completely off from how it actually happened... most notably, you have the White Room still firmly attached to the BPC and CM with two minutes left in the count.

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

Swingarms 9 (white room), DRRS and the crane were purposely not animated correctly due to most people not wanting to wait around watching nothing happen for a long time. For example, the white room moves the park position at T-43 minutes and stays there until T-4 minutes. The preflight arms disconnect at T-10 seconds (arms 1, 2, 3) while the inflight arms (arms 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 disconnect at vertical motion. Each arm has a slightly different time to complete the retraction which I accounted for in the animation. Note that in this particular animation, I do rewind the clock several times to show different angles. But when you see my shot with all the arms in view with movement, it is correct except as noted. The movie Apollo 13 was way off in their animation where they show a camera fly through of the arms retracting one at a time. Thanks for watching and your comment.

Please, somebody explain how the fake ass top portion of Apollo 11's eagle blasted off, (traveling vertically with no engines) not only caught up to, but docked with the fake ass command module, (traveling horizontally around the fake ass moon at 8000 MPH): calling Buck Rodgers, Scottie beam me up....................Obviously, ball-tards live in their own little made-up fantasy world.....Eighteen free-masons flew through the Van-Allen radiation belt, unharmed, twelve walked on the moon, planted flags, played golf, rode dune buggies, and tried to sell the rocks Nasa acquired from Antarctica as (moon rocks), one of which they gave to the Dutch government that proved to be petrified wood.......You can't make this crap

The Apollo Command unit had an insulation of honeycomb aluminum and Styrofoam!?

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson หลายเดือนก่อน

It was made of an aluminum honeycomb sandwhich bonded between sheet aluminum alloy. The base of the CM consisted of a heat shield made of brazed stainless steel honeycomb filled with a phenolic epoxy resin as an ablative material and varied in thickness from 1.8 to 6.9 cm. The shockwave from the blunt end carried away a lot of the heat during reentry along with the charring/shedding of the ablative material.

Didn’t the swing arm retract at T-10 minutes?

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Well which one? Swingarms 1, 2 and 3 were preflight arms. The preflight arms (except for 3) are retracted at T-10 seconds. Number 3 usually retracts a lot earlier. Swingarms 4 through 8 start retracting upon vehicle vertical motion triggered by the lift off switch on the hold down arms. While 4 thru 8 start retracting simultaneously, they each take their own time for completely retracting (in order: 6.4 seconds, 7.4 seconds, 7.7 seconds, 8.4 seconds, 9 seconds. Swingarm 9 (white room) moves back about 3 ft at T-43 minutes and then fully retracts at T-4 minutes.

I remember how scared I was watching all the key parts of this flight and landing; after all these years, I never knew that a set of parachutes deployed before the iconic red and white ones. Bravo on such a superb animation.

Thanks for your comment and watching. I did not know that either until I started modeling and animating it. If you have seen my entire Apollo 11 series, check out my Apollo 15 and Skylab series.
