I didn't knowI needed a comparison with the Pentel Pens, but I needed a comparison with the Pentel Pens! I own and love those and I was thinking, they look brighter and more vibrant, but the Tombow ones look more elegant. I could see wedding invitations written with one of them, you know?

I actually like the less saturated tombow pens. More elegant and not in your face. Plus, clean crisp upstrokes are what makes the calligraphy in my opinion.

Hey Amanda, this review was really helpful. I actually just ordered the pentel pens- I prefer the nib as it is slightly more flexible, and the colour payoff of the fudenosukes was underwhelming. But I just wanted to point out that the pronunciation of fudenosuke is foo-day-nos-keh, (soften the oh sound and the u in 'suke' doesn't actually make a sound.) Again, no hate, I love your videos, but I am a bit of a pronunciation freak lol.
Thanks for the comparison. I was disappointed by the lack of saturation, but maybe that makes them more build-able. The tops are misleading, they don't really match the ink color like the dual brushes. Looking forward to the blending video.

Oh, those Tombow colors are PERFECT for me - I specifically want a set of colorful but not super saturated pens 😁 the red could've been a little bit darker, maybe, but generally speaking... Yeah. Love.

Actually, Sharpie has come out with a set of 12 small brush pens. I am not too well versed on soft vs. hard but compared to the Pentels, they are soft. I like them a lot. Note, however, that being Sharpies they are permanent ink, not water-based ink.

Maybe the bracelets or maybe something else but it made it very hard for me to concentrate and I ended up pausing the video multiple times to get a break from the noise. Just a heads up! Yes! Thank you so much! Huge thanks especially because you did a comparison between the fude and tombow! I had been looking for a video like yours comparing the two and their colours and I am glad that you did so! Would love if you put it in your title that you're comparing the two because I think it would help others! Also side note but usually people recommend the fude touch for beginners because of their softer nib but I think it's great that you think that beginners should also begin with bit more accuracy in their lettering. Anyway thank you!!!
Nice video. I love the ink in the other pens. They are richer than the Tombows.
Is it weird but I have both pens but being left handed, actually prefer the Pentel?. I tend to push (I know) when I write being left handed which is not good when doing calligraphy but I prefer the bouncy (like she said) nature of The Pentel pens I can control it better. I still use both, but I noticed that I tend to use the Pentel more when I’m signing a card or envelopes or doing quotes on paper that I would post on the wall.
I'm hoping Tombow releases more colors. I have the pentels and would love some hardnibs in pastel or muted colors. Color combos that Tombow has in the larger brush tip collection.
I'm still a beginner and use my pentels almost exclusively but these new ones look like a great option for more control.
I'm hoping they will too!! I would love the Dual Brush Brights color pack colors in the Fude!

101st comment. Argh I have looked forward to these for a while. I got them and have struggled adapting. I started with the soft tip so going to the hard is so strange. I’ve got 4 packs of the pentel pens. 2 of each colours and I love them. The difference is so big going from them to the tombow
Wow, the Tombow looks dried out, with some strokes looking dropped off. The Pentel is beautiful. I like to use grays and browns, so I would prefer to buy maybe both brands of those colors individually (but I'm not sure if anyone offers that).

Leave it to you, Amanda, to give me just the review I was thinking I needed! Ordered mine this morning! I was also wondering about bleed through. Are they similar to the regular Fudenosuke in this respect? I find the black rarely bleeds through and wonder about the colors. (Thinking especially about Bible journaling.)
They do seem to be quite similar - maybe even less bleeding.

The Tombow grey is slightly lighter - it's actually the perfect grey for shadowing!

Hello Amanda, I am new to modern calligraphy and am aware that the Tombow Fudenosuke individual pens come in both soft and hard tips. This coloured set is hard-tipped. Is that the best option for calligraphy? Also, in the above demonstration the Pentel colours seem richer - is that indeed the case? Thanks :)
I prefer the hard tipped for hand lettering! And yes, the Pentels are more saturated than the Tombows - but I use them both very often!

It's a slightly flexible tip but is the same feel as the classic, black Tombow Fude Hard tip xo

No since they r a little dry but still vibrant
great video, but the weird crackling noises in the background are very unpleasant
To be honest, yes, the Tombow makes very clean and crisp thin upstrokes, but my hand really hurts after using them coz I have to press down really hard to get the thicker downstrokes. The Pentel might not get the extremely thin upstrokes the Tombow does, but it's softer and more flexibel so my hand doesn't hurt after using those 🤷🏼♀️
