i'm new to this show and have seen around 5 commentaries but never have i imagined david intelligence to showcase in this kind of interview. looking forward for more interviews and commentaries.
"You're calling Jesus a biologist & comparing gay marriage to woman marrying a dog, which is OFFENCIVE & CRAZY!" Well done David, that pretty much nailed it.
Did this guy seriously just say biology textbooks haven't changed in 6000 years?? Whaaat? I guess this kind of belief is typical when you consider the Bible a biology textbook... I'm pretty new to watching the David Packman Show and it's really a pleasant surprise how respectful the interviews are. No constant shouting over each other, sincere attempts to get the topic on track, etc. Very nice!
I DO see why he has a conversation with such people. Not to find agreement with someone who obviously will never stop spouting whatever nonsense helps him to maintain the fig-leaf of his belief system, but to show to his audience what an absurd farce based solely on lies is found on the other side of the argument. That is VERY instructive for those who were not aware of it already.
And many also seem to think "abomination" means "not allowed anywhere, anytime" when, really, when you consider the times, the customs, etc, it merely meant "not customary" as in "not a regular thing". And even then, there were a bunch of other "abominations" listed like eating pork, shellfish, divorce, etc, yet you don't see "religious" people advocating against such things. People always just pick and choose things in religion that are most convenient in suiting their own agenda, bigotry, etc.
David: What do you think about progressive issues becoming more popular? Chaplain: GAY MARRIAGE David: Let me try a different approach, are conservative issues less popular? Chaplain: GAY MARRIAGE David: But are we becoming more progressive? Chaplain: GAY MARRIAGE
I have SO much respect for that viewpoint. We're all entitled to our own opinions here in the USA. Honestly, as a gay man, I can't even say that I'm 100% behind gay marriage. What I don't understand, though, is the association that many conservatives try to form between that and sex with animals. It's gross, and just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, those thoughts aren't originating in the minds of gay couples who want to be united; they come from bigots, and perverted ones at that.
I'm a history major. I have looked it up. And the fact is polygamy was the norm for a very, very long time. Plenty of societies were cool with gays. Even when marriage was one man and one woman it was for property, not love.
Why do you keep interviewing this guy? He will never say gay marriage is OK, and you just want him to say most people say let them marry. A waste of time.
He was referring to Matthew 19:4-6: And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” The discussion was whether divorce was permissible. Of course the passage can be read many ways.
Unlike gay marriage, there are foreseeable negative consequences in sanctioning J walkers. Unless you can you declare a foreseeable negative consequence to allowing gay marriage, your analogy doesn't fit.
It's so frustrating to try and debate someone who is this dishonest. He is like a politician who invents a reality of his choosing and argues from that perspective.
I never understood using the bible to attack same-sex marriage. If my religion says that i cannot watch gameshows for they are wrong. That does not mean You cannot watch gameshows, it means i cannot watch gameshows. If you believe the bible says Gays can't marry because its wrong, that means you cannot have a gay marriage, but the atheist down the street can. I mean seriously. Muslims can't eat pork, but never have i seen a muslim grab hotdogs in a supermarket and demand it be illegal.
His "one flesh" is not referring to an offspring. OMG, this guys stretching it. Clearly the One Flesh is the COUPLE. He was making an artistic analogy of two people becoming ONE.
You want me to tell you why we are shifting towards social progressivism? In the past, political "truth" was lost in all of the propaganda. People only heard the political ads, and based their views off of them. Very few people actually thought about the issues really hard and tried to find the truth, which they may have shared with a few friends. But now with Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking, this massively multiplies the number of people who they can share their findings with.
One man and one woman has not been the defining characteristic of the majority of human existence. Polygamy has been the defining characteristic. I wonder why this Chaplain didn't mention that.
If recruitment were how it works, why is it that the "detox" procedure (pray away the gay, etc.) never really works. If you listen carefully to any in that movement being honest, they acknowledge that they are able to control their urges, but that their urges never really changed.
Don't ridicule this man, he's obviously just concerned that if we allow the homosexuals to recruit the children of straight couples, humanity will eventually cease to exist!
Religious people believing something is wrong doesn't mean they want to outlaw it. There are many christians who believe; alcohol, smoking, divorce, remarriage, owning guns or violence of any kind, war, wealth, sex before marriage and the list could go on and on, are wrong even sin of the greatest kind. However they don't all (certainly some do) want to vote to take other's right to partake of these things away. His poll only addressed how they felt religiously, not politically.
Um... marriage hasn't been between one man an one woman for 6000 years. I don't know how long it has been, but I know polygamy was the norm for a large part of that history
I love the "same sex cant bare child" argument. Its so elaborate and thought provoking that the only response I can come up with is "well no fucking shit" so that's a plus 1 to them I'm stumped.
Not that I'm supporting the chaplain's position, but I think what he is trying to argue is that the institution of marriage reflects societies recognition, encouragement and support of reproduction, so that it really should not be extended to couples who biologically are incapable of reproducing. I don't agree with him, but I believe that is his position.
I wasn't talking about the constitution. You compared gay marriage to J walking. And I was just pointing out that the comparison was both unfair and invalid.
The Chaplain is so evasive and David showed great restraint. That the Chaplain evaded his question about what direction the country is going completely derailed the interview. But, was anyone really surprised he acted that way?
Do *I* believe that marriage is between one man and one woman? Yes. That stems from my religious beliefs. This is America. Our laws are supposed to be laws for *everyone,* whether or not they follow my beliefs. And I won't push my religious beliefs on others.
Its kind of like Goodwin's Law. I think we should name it Milk's Law. It will state "the likelyness of a conversation on Gay Marriage to develop into a bestiality directly coincides with time."
When people bring up gay rights, I think that people should be happy. But when others do it, they think immediately to bestiality. I have to wonder, aren't they thinking way too much about bestiality?
The military uses them as a front line for dealing with mental health and offering comfort of faith. Of course, it would be better if units had a mental health specialist of some kind, and a reference sheet on nearby religious organizations. I guess I can understand a need for dealing with people's religious needs while deployed, but there has to be a way to handle that without giving a commission to religious proponent.
This man is "DOCTOR" Gordon Klingenschmitt, who "earned" his PhD in Theology from the distinguished school of Regent University, famous the world over for producing such scholars as, um, uhh...
(continued) A lot of parents get this wrong. Sex is not just about procreation. Its also about love. How often do people actually have sex to procreate? Most people either do it recreationally, because it feels good, or to show their love. There are multiple evidence sources. American: psychology association, psychiatric association, association of social workers, academy of pediatrics. Look on any of those websites. They are ALL scientific, ALL objective. Get over it.
What does marriage have to do with reproduction? The chaplain continued to make that argument & David never called him out on it. I mean, the chaplain DOES know that you don't have to be married to produce children, right? I would hope he does.
Jesus spent his time washing the feet of eight single bearded men, telling them to "do onto others as you would have them do you" Could it get any gayer than that?
First of all this dude was talking about THE UNITED STATES not the chuch. And you tend to get pretty "decisive" poll findings if you get your polls off of Fox News and Sarah Palin's website. What happened to "separation of church and state"? Not everyone is Christian anyways. 7:00 made me want to rip off my computer screen. "Gay species" "Recruit". I feel so bad for Mr. Pakman. I'm subscribing to this channel now...
You know the only reference Jesus ever makes about marriage is to stand up for women's rights in divorce! It is often quoted out of context to support the bigotry against the LGBT community. Read the book you live your entire life by!
I love how they define the sole reason to marry one another is to produce offspring. Love really is an overrated reason - at least in the biblical context...
As is generally the case, this bigoted pastor is ignoring the context of Mattthew 19 for his own misguided purposes. In that chapter the biblical Jesus is debating the OT guidelines for divorce with the pharisees. The biblical Jesus never said one, single, solitary word about homosexuals.
It's all scare tactics: if you don't follow what we say (not what we do) and stay the way society always has been (but it hasn't), then all sorts of horrible things will happen.
You said "OK for raising children like normal marriage is." Homosexuality isn't just about sex. Its about love. They love and show affection as well. I don't see what point you were trying to make there. I wasn't questioning your views, I was questioning your insinuation that somehow children raised in homosexual houses grow up either sick or disadvantaged. Which is clearly false.
Not true. DADT was adopted 20 years ago, and DOMA a few years after that. The notion that nobody was thinking about these issues 20 years ago is not true. I'll grant you 50 years ago. Polarization is a vague concept that really is used more often to generate heat than light. I would say that, while the nation is pretty much divided as ever, there has been a marked shift towards approval of same sex marriage, as well as marijuana and other things - i.e., away from the "conservative" position.
David - Please stop calling him "chaplain". You really should be referring to and addressing this guy as "ex-chaplain", as in the insubordinate & court martialed ex-chaplain.
"social liberal policies are contributing to that" Actually that is a bit of a leap. But in any case, you shouldn't have mentioned something completely irrelevant. "There is no such evidence." Of course not. This isn't how evidence works. There is evidence that suggests there are almost no differences between children raised in homosexual and heterosexual homes. The difference in observed cases is bullying due to discrimination. apa,org has the info. They are a scientific community.
How the hell do you "recruit" someone to be ANOTHER SEXUAL ORIENTATION?? I'd love to see how that would go down! "Hey, man! Become gay, and I'll give you a free house and Xbox 360" "Sure!"
Agreed, we should do like Israel. THe government enforces contracts, it shouldn't be in the business of defining spiritual/cultural terms! No one should be need a "marriage license"...And if a Church, temple, family friends etc wants to "marry" a gay couple then that is their prerogative!
We find it spooky that this guy glibly talks about 3 woman and a dog - its just not normal to go to places like that when talking about the Bible or Marriage
He's referring to "young earth" creationism. Getting such a fundamental, mind numbingly obvious thing wrong in this day an age is funny to me. Which I think as a preacher in the spotlight he has to toss that bone out to the fundies. David called him on it, and he backpedaled: even more funny.
You should try studying again because polygamy was the norm for hundreds of years. Native societies had twospirits and gay couples, the Romans and Greeks were cool with gay people....saying marriage has only been man/woman is just plain wrong. And there are documents and artifacts from over 6000 years ago, dude.
7:48 Funny, I don't remember being "recruited." I just remember puberty hitting and my hormones telling me that I was attracted to men. Is mine a unique story?
Ok, i say it: He is gay and religion and uppbringing/culture force him to create an alternative reality. There are no other rational understanding of this.

I wish he'd understand that to people who don't believe his nonsense, that every time he mentions Jesus, it's basically the equivalent of blowing raspberries and waving his arms around frantically.
Most people are set in their ways unfortunately. I'm not going to rip the guy, but I'll definitely disagree. There's increasing evidence that homosexuality is more related to genetics than anything. So the biological argument could very well be on its way out. I just find it funny that there's this enormous opposition to gay marriage, but you never hear this much about helping the poor, starving children in other countries, or genocide. Why is that the case?

LOOOLLL i love the product placement at 2:52. david, you're awesome
This guy is the perfect example of why we can't have a reasonable debate in this country.
*slow clap for David Pakman*
He didn't take one ounce of shit while politely beating the living snot out of his interview guest.
Bravo!
Well said!
"You're calling Jesus a biologist & comparing gay marriage to woman marrying a dog, which is OFFENCIVE & CRAZY!"

Well played David.

That's the way Pastor, load the questions to your advantage to get the answers you want.
I'm a history major.
I have looked it up.

AM i the only one who gets the feeling Mr. Klingenschmitt spent some extra time in the Navy Showers!!
He said they are recruited. By that logic, they must have been recruited thousands of years ago as well. Its so absurd.
2:51 "bla bla bla....is that my mug ?....yeah I think it is"
Unlike gay marriage, there are foreseeable negative consequences in sanctioning J walkers. Unless you can you declare a foreseeable negative consequence to allowing gay marriage, your analogy doesn't fit.
I was born to a religious man+woman family and at age 10 I discovered I am bisexual. So at age 10, some how, I was recruited into the gay community.
It's so frustrating to try and debate someone who is this dishonest. He is like a politician who invents a reality of his choosing and argues from that perspective.

I'm offended. I was never recruited to be gay. No one came into my school and did recruitment. It's the way I was born and I knew very early on.
His "one flesh" is not referring to an offspring. OMG, this guys stretching it. Clearly the One Flesh is the COUPLE. He was making an artistic analogy of two people becoming ONE.

Jesus never said anything derogatory about gays or gay marriage..they need to distort the truth, which comes easy for him..
Its kind of like Goodwin's Law. I think we should name it Milk's Law. It will state "the likelyness of a conversation on Gay Marriage to develop into a bestiality directly coincides with time."
Pastor Klingenshit, Pastor Crankyshit...did I spell THAT wrong? >:D
When people bring up gay rights, I think that people should be happy. But when others do it, they think immediately to bestiality. I have to wonder, aren't they thinking way too much about bestiality?
As for Matthew 19, he references old testament scripture in explaining that divorce is wrong.

It seems to be the last argument left for those that oppose gay marriage. It's a pretty poor one too.
the young man is so obtuse that he doesn't understand the fundamental TRUTH of holy matrimony
2:46 I'm like "oooohhh shit, he's pulled out the bible"
There is a psychology lesson in here
Jesus spent his time washing the feet of eight single bearded men, telling them to "do onto others as you would have them do you"

Nothing like a Seaman talking about gay marriage.
So I'm not gay because I was never "Recruited"? Do gay "recruiters" set up at career fairs, like army recruiters?? ....
I only joined the gay community because my friend needed one more to meet his recruitment quota.
6,000 years of 1 man and 1 woman? I'm pretty sure the Bible itself has plenty of men with multiple wives.
don't forget! the largest group opposed to marriage equality is, and remains, biologists.
If marriage 100% MUST result in a child, do we hang people who don't want children?
You know the only reference Jesus ever makes about marriage is to stand up for women's rights in divorce! It is often quoted out of context to support the bigotry against the LGBT community. Read the book you live your entire life by!
yeah guy 2 needs to be investigated its very clear at this point
"We don't have many text books older than 6000 years."
I guess we're ignoring the Sumerians again then are we chaplain?
You are giving VERY conflicted and obscure messages with this post. Which side do you believe in?
I love how they define the sole reason to marry one another is to produce offspring.
Love really is an overrated reason - at least in the biblical context...

When was Klingenschmidt "recruited" into heterosexuality , assuming he's not actually in the closet, which may be the case .
Just following one point he made.... If gayness only comes from recruitment, where did the first one come from?
Dude, being straight is like being cool, if you tell people you are, then there's probably a very good chance that you aren't...
He's referring to "young earth" creationism. Getting such a fundamental, mind numbingly obvious thing wrong in this day an age is funny to me. Which I think as a preacher in the spotlight he has to toss that bone out to the fundies. David called him on it, and he backpedaled: even more funny.
I know right?
What part of “I don’t want to follow your religion” don’t Christians get?
Jesus never once said anything as far as I am concerned considering we cannot prove authorship of the Gospel of Mark.
He's very specific about case scenarios. Women and dogs? Thinking he's into it.
Conservatives sure are obsessed with this whole marrying your dog/cat/goat idea....
Biology doesn't 'agree' with anything, it just is.
You should try studying again because polygamy was the norm for hundreds of years. Native societies had twospirits and gay couples, the Romans and Greeks were cool with gay people....saying marriage has only been man/woman is just plain wrong.
And there are documents and artifacts from over 6000 years ago, dude.
I am pretty sure Jesus had no idea what a sperm or egg, yet alone a zygote was.
7:48
Funny, I don't remember being "recruited." I just remember puberty hitting and my hormones telling me that I was attracted to men. Is mine a unique story?
Fabulous! You go, guuurl.... sprinkle some fairy dust with that magic wand of a cigarette holder -- poof! (y'all been gliterized :-)
i feel bad for the dog used
in his "example"
In recorded human history, marriage has taken all kinds of forms, this guy isn't being realistic at all.
great segment showcasing this guy's idiocy, although he should have been called out on the recruitment comment as well.
What if a women or a men are not fertile? Or a woman has some sort of cancer and she's not allowed to carry a child because its risky for both.
Are you familiar with the Mosuo people of China? They don't believe that marriage is only between a man and a woman.
don't tell him that. He'll probably faint.
jesus never mentioned homosexuality
Unfortunately, Matthew does reference the "two as one" claptrap.
Ok, i say it: He is gay and religion and uppbringing/culture force him to create an alternative reality. There are no other rational understanding of this.
Biology textbooks haven't changed in 6000 years? OH. YES. A BRONZE AGE TEXT ABOUT BIOLOGY IS JUST AS GOOD AS COLLEGE TEXTBOOKS FRESHLY MINTED IN 2012.
This guy is laughable. Also, "Jesus" has nothing to do with the conversation. I wish he'd understand that to people who don't believe his nonsense, that every time he mentions Jesus, it's basically the equivalent of blowing raspberries and waving his arms around frantically.
i stopped to watch a few videos here to take a break from doing biology homework and this is just bizzare, but it is kinda funny in a sense though
I would like to see David debate someone
