One of the first things I got drilled into me when I started my training was to never EVER !!! wear melting materials in circle. It isn't even about how flammable something is, but about how badly it can injure you if and when it catches fire. A robe made of polyester will almist certainly mean major surgery to remove the plastic fused into your skin and might even claim your life, whereas a linen robe would burn off you so quickly that, with a bit of luck, you won't even reach a first degree level of burns on most of your body. The same goes for any kind of accessories and cordage one might wear, for exactly the same reasons.

    • @GrumpyOldCrone
      @GrumpyOldCrone  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

Exactly this. Unless one is undertaking some kind of training that doesn't involve flammables of any kind, it's a real no brainer, I think. And even if you aren't using flammables of any kind (and what tradition doesn't love to set fire to stuff? I bloody love a good fire, me!), they still look horrible. And are sweaty and gross. Blech!

I used to work in an iron foundry and we were only allowed to wear cotton, denim and leather. And for footwear, wooden clogs! None of that lot burns that hot and gives you time to act appropriately.

I hate the term 'baby witch'. If they're a serious student of the craft, why would they call themselves that? Do medical students call themselves baby doctors? Or law students call themselves baby lawyers? Or seminary students call themselves baby priests/ministers? If you call yourself 'baby' anything you are studying, it seems to me that you're not taking the subject or yourself seriously.
I don't care about polyester cloaks. Not everyone can afford 100% linen or wool. But NO ONE should be wearing loose clothing around open flames. Hence one of my favorite lines from the 1970s film "Wicker Man"
Sergeant Howie: [outraged] But they are... are *naked*!
Lord Summerisle: Naturally! It's much too dangerous to jump through the fire with your clothes on!

there were signs of me being a witch my whole life but i didn’t know I was one. Like I had a being carve a pentagram on my hand in a dream as a teenager. I wasn’t exposed to any of that stuff so I had no clue what a pentagram was the being had robes and was wearing an animal skull with horns. Then four years ago I was dabbling with crystals and a cutesy little craft book as an agnostic! Then last year I started a spontaneous kundalini awakening and saw blue pentagrams around me and fairies and UFOs chased me! I called 911 😂 then I started filming the UFOs 🛸 so that helped me to accept this new reality. found out I was a witch in a previous life. I’m not a baby anything. This whole thing escalated so fast. I’m a natural but my energy was not controlled for months I was frying electronics and having panic attacks because being surrounded by beings was very frightening. Now I’m used to it. I learned the basics of casting circles and energy management. I’m up to my eyeballs in shadow work. So being a witch is fun but not always. I think the universe ask more of witches. It helped me to grow up! And I intend to pay it forward !

A few years ago I shelled out for a really nice wool cloak--or, I think it's technically a cape, it's not full length--but it's all wool and it's lined and it's got pockets and little arm slits--it's spectacular. It was like $250, and it felt kind of like a ridiculous waste of money at the time, except I still love it. I wear it at work when the office is cold, it's perfect for wearing at my desk, like a blanket only it stays in place and has the little arm holes and pockets. I have rarely been this delighted with a thing two years after buying.

I am largely ambivalent about the term "baby witch", but I do agree that there's something kind of ick about infantalising a practice with such ancient roots. It seems a bit like infantalising one's grandmother. Personally, I refer to myself as a "fledgling", which is to say "big enough to leave the nest and wander around with supervision, but still learning and not quite old enough for my flight feathers to have come in yet". That said, I usually just refer to myself as a "witch" when talking to non-practicioners.

I looked at the pictures, and despite not having a goth bone in my body, I could see exactly what she meant. Aesthetics are not the final word in anything, least of all witchcraft!

I was active in Iron age renactment for years and I absolutely loved it. My group was quite keen on as much authenticity as possible, although clearly it's less easy to be absolute on that with such an early period, and I never had to make a tent. We usually slept in round houses at various sites. All the clothing was handmade of wool and linen and I have never been more comfortable in anything I've worn. I was actually married in an Iron Age themed (ie couldn't be completely authentic because we just don't know enough to be sure but we embodied the ethos as much as possible) and I handmade and embroidered all the clothes for myself, my groom and two bridesmaids (children) from wool and linen. I think they were beautiful. The cloak was based on an actual historical find although I'm embarassed to say I can't remember which one now (it was a long time ago) but was pure wool lined with linen. I know that wool is expensive, but much of the clothing we made was from old woolen blankets that we bought cheaply from second hand shops. There are loads of them out there.

Pretty sure herb is a mute h word borrowed from French where the h was dropped nearly 2000 years ago (which we know bc of some upper class Roman dude complaining about how the kids and the poors were ruining Latin). Herb with an aspirated h is short for Herbert, which is also an h aspiré in French. I think it's part of the pattern of the Americas being more conservative in pronunciation changes and maintaining closer pronunciation interpolations of loanwords? A similar idea holds true for the North American French dialects as well, I believe. But I'm just a dilettante :p
I'm more on the heathen side, but love the vids and am glad to see I'm not alone in my loathing of polyester, what with plastic fabrics being the main source of microplastics (hurts my soul). I also have similar feelings, as a gay woman, about the term "babygay" as well. Also, my British isn't the best, but does it still count as having a whinge if it's true?

I so enjoyed this. I'm quite young myself, just in my early 20s, but these are the conversations people need to be willing to have. Sourcing materials that are sustainable and ethical does take more time and effort, but there's no time limit on practicing or growing your space. I will fully admit that I like things to look a certain way, but that doesn't need to mean buying everything all at once so it all matches perfectly and immediately.
3 years ago I purchased yards of cotton tartan that I intend to use to line a wool cloak I'm going to make, but it's been sitting waiting in a drawer because I'm saving up for a good quality local wool (I live out in the country so it makes it a little easier for me) rather than buying cheap fake wool. And I'm not going to sit here and pretend that I don't own polyester, one of my favourite cloaks was a hand me down from my father: polyester velvet lined with polyester satin. But I have no intention of purchasing new items, nor do I see the purpose in throwing it away rather than just using it until it can't be used anymore (though it is purely a costume piece since the polyester is so flammable). I moved into a new apartment 9 months ago and am still slowly collecting items and furniture because I want it to last and fit my vision. And yes, it was more work to restore the broken bookshelf my neighbour was throwing away, and yes I'm stuck with my cheap desk from high school serving as a sewing table until I can find something proper (and then likely give this table away, no use in tossing it when it does function). But the items I've got fill me with pride because I know I worked on them, I know they were loved before me, and I know they're not just rotting in a dump.

I tried to get involved with a local group of them years back but not only was there a good deal of cliquishness going on, no one wanted to take the time to explain what and how they went about doing things. I attended several meetings on and off but it was just incredibly toxic (and some of the men downright predatory towards me at the time as a younger female presenting person). I just got a 100% wool cloak for the first time this summer. It is finally cold and OMG this is the best. It's a half circle cloak so it will fully close but generally sits just a hair open left to its own devices. I am going to get new clasps for it so I can clasp it a bit further down if I desire to as well. I have a cloak that was marketed to me as wool, but when it arrived, the tag said 100% polyester and I was really upset. It looked fine, as it was made to look like felted wool, but it wasn't anything close to as warm as this wool cloak. I still have it, but it's kept for fantasy larp games instead of aesthetic.

The organic feel of Earth is imbued into natural materials and look organic and one-of-a-kind and so vibrant like Nature itself.
These polyester things-it-whats-its all look the same and it feels sterile and lifeless. These fabrics being so cheap also fray like all Hell so 1-2 uses and it's toast. Even learned it through cosplay folks online.

NGL, I did wear a really crappy polyester caftan for a summer solstice ritual that I bought super cheap. It was so incredibly uncomfortable in the Midwest summer heat and humidity! Like wearing a plastic rain poncho. I changed it the minute I got back to my tent, and donated it after that one wear. Lesson learned!
We do have re-enactors in the US who recreate stuff like the US Civil War or 18th century fur trade. They showed me how to do stuff like card wool, cook in an open hearth, and dye cloth with walnuts.

We do have reenactments of different historical events here in the states with authentic dress code. It’s wonderful to see and to be a part of. It is expected that things including the clothing are authentic as possible and there are the authenticity sticklers who in my opinion makes the events much better. Without them we might end up with something subpar. Hoorah for the sticklers :)

k I disagree with a few things you said, so...I'm going to say them in as gentle way as I can.
1, completely get how you hate polyester, and cheap cloaks but not everyone can afford a 'big lump of wool' or has the ability to create a cloak. I'm a witch but am also visually imapired. I am on benefits and I cannot cut a circle to save my life. Dismissing polyester cloaks as not proper witchcraft leaves out people like me who can't afford or can't make the woolen cloaks.
2, I always understood baby witch to mean someone who is new to the craft and is still learning. I don't see a problem with using baby witch to mean that you are new to the craft. It's just an easy tag to explain to people that you are still learning
3, Witchy...the real problem is not the word witchy, it's influencers being annoying while influencing. We all hate and love them in equal measure. You aren't alone.

So, there’s a magic box in my front room, it’s usually closely guarded by a grumpy farmer dragon ( my husband) and he considers it his job to keep the magic box all to himself, a job I might add, that he takes very seriously. To be fair, this isn’t usually an issue for me. I walked into my living room an hour ago to see if the dragon fancied a coffee, but it’s empty, as he has this evening taken himself off to bed early with the deadly man-flu . This has presented a rare opportunity for someone else in the house to access the hidden secrets that lie within the magic light box, namely me! 🥳 so I’m looking at the controls that can apparently control the sky ( mind blown 😮) and see that I can watch TH-cam (mind blown for a second time😂) so now, for the first time , I’m watching you on something other than my old mobile phone 🎉 (and you look great on a 30 inch screen by the way😊)
I’m actually just wanting to say thank you for sharing your views, particularly on the words ‘baby witch’ which I’ve just made my 17 year old daughter sit and watch, and she walked out of the living room with her shoulders back and a confident smile. I’d also like to add that I’m really happy to have come across your channel, and I reckon that if we ever went for a cup (or glass?) of something I’d probably end up wetting myself laughing 😂as I definitely agree with a lot of your points, but even without the laughing, you have an amazing outlook which lines up perfectly with mine😂
Obviously I’m not going to bump into you anytime soon ( but if you’re ever near Bristol, you’d be near my neck of the woods😊) and I’m not a weird stalker, honestly 😏😅. I just wanted to send a little love your way, from one grumpy crone to another 😂❤

...Ok, but what if that cloak was a teenage passion project you put 2 weeks into hand stitching? With a hood? That is water resistant and very cosy? I was 17 when I made my crush velvet and polysatin cloak and I will not apologise for it, it is my baby, I wear it in all weathers for everything, both in my craft and outside of it. Plastic is literally everywhere, can't really avoid it without spending money a lot of people, like my broke ass in college, cannot justify spending on that even on the rare occasion that we do have that kind of money... But you are right, those crappy polyester ones are awful. Mine might not be practical around open flames but it had love put into every stitch. A shitty cloak is fine if you made it yourself, but not when you bought it cheap. It would have been cheaper to buy the materials and make yourself something better.

I changed my mind and thought I'd reply, because why not? So... sorry to disappoint you, but I am actually pretty content with myself inside and out these days. It's a gift that cronehood brought me, 100%. I don't overthink about myself any more. I am what I am, in my power, in my daftness and in my crankiness. I am the first to hold up my hands to being a judgemental gatekeeper. I totally am, I'm not going to excuse it, because I don't feel bad about it. One of the other gifts of cronehood is perspective. I call people idiots when I think they act like idiots. Pure and simple. I think toxic positivity is pretty damaging. Nobody's life is all light and love. I've walked through several dumpster fires of bad situations in the course of my life, as has everybody else. I don't want to gild that turd. If things are shit, you should be able to say that they are shit without someone sending you a meme about "everything happens for a beautiful reason". Because it doesn't. People you love die. Scammers happen. Jobs are lost. Friends betray you. It rains when you've just put the washing on the line. The dog poops in front of the roomba. It happens. People should be allowed to vent about that, and have their vent seen as valid.
I don't join FB groups for content - I joined a FB group and hooboy was it full of idiots. I didn't name it. I didn't attack people in person. I just talked about it. If you have a problem with that, I suggest avoiding anything that says, "reaction video" on TH-cam because you're going to have a poor experience!
If you think people watch my videos because they think it's amusing watching an old woman swearing... Maybe? I don't know. I *do* know that most people engage in comments with me regarding my point of view, not my occasional use of the word "f*ck*. Old people don't have to be sweetness and light. We get to use all the words. Creatively! Also, they have to watch a LOT of hours of video because the content:swearing ratio isn't very high...
And FINALLY! (Well done for getting to the end of this comment!) if you think me crazy for suggesting that people learn their craft and care less about how they look, and more about what's inside, might I suggest that "crazy" is closer to you watching all my videos so you can tell me how much you hate them? Do you have that much time on your hands? Have you considered a hobby? Witchy colouring in, maybe?
Anyway, thanks for the watch hours, and I genuinely hope you have a good day.
