Sam make sure that water can’t come back up through your stand drain.. if there is storms/flooding. Wouldn’t put reactors after fuge, they will just get gunked up. Looking awesome 👏
Parkers Reef yeah in my opinion if you put reactors after fuge they will get blocked. You don’t want pods or detritus going from your fuge right into your carbon (or whatever you use). I would go filter roll first, then skimmer, put reactors after those to prolong the life of reactor media. Then the fuge can polish up the water then any pods/bacteria ect can get pumped into display to feed your reef. Red Sea Reefer tanks have a VERY course foam after fuge to prevent return pump getting blocked but pods get through fine.

I read all the comments made by others before me typing this, so I'm going to disagree with the ones saying that the refugium should be before the skimmer chamber. One of the main reasons to do a refugium (besides nutrient export) is to allow a place for micro fauna to grow, and thrive, so that it can then make it to your display tank. For that reason I strongly recommend that you place the refugium in the last chamber just before the return pump area, so that any copepods or other micro fauna don't get skimmed, or filtered out. This was one of your best videos yet. Really loved everything in it!
Yeah, your plan for the stand cladding looks much nicer than my idea with the acrylic. And I hadn't considered acrylic scratching. So thanks Sam, that will steer me straight too. Love the catch tray too!
Just putting it out there in case you may be interested. The Radion G5 has a very T5 look with a bit of shimmer. Lots of people seem to like the T5 look. I am running two XR15’s on a 40 breeder that I set up to become a frag tank once I move my 75.
Parkers Reef yeah just throwing it out there because I feel it is quite a bit different outing this time. It looks very very similar to my tank using an ATI Power Moduke and 6 ATI Blue Plus Bulbs
With that automatid hood (up and down) with the metal halide bulb , you can simulate the light intensity of the day. Wow you have changed the game of lightning again 🤔
May i make a suggestion. What about swapping your skimmer and refugium positions. That way any copepod production will not get removed by your skimmer before it has a chance to enter your system
Have you looked into the Orphek lights? They are a panel like the Phillips but I’d say they would have much better colour and more control I believe. They do have an Aussie distributer too.

Sam you plan looks sound and well thought out, the only thing I would look at is your RO area, my system is 1400 Ltrs including sump, evaporation is around 30 Ltrs per week, you need a 2 week RO storage for me it’s 75 Ltr to give a margin of error for holidays
My RODI reservoir is automated, so it fills itself when empty. Realistically just needs to be big enough so it doesn’t turn on every couple hours. This volume should see it last a couple days :)
the last sump IMO is the best you will have easy access to any reactor you are planning to add and the 50MM inlet will cancel whole lot of bubble from the return the RO section its meeh can come and go but you will have to go over the sump to check the level or remove the side panel to do
Yeah the last one is the final "draft" at this stage anyway, although I like some of the feedback from people on here so I might make a new version yet!
Loving the build Sam, I’m in the early stages of thinking out my dream tank. Definitely agree with fuge before skimmer, can have the water deeper in that section without having the skimmer balanced on a stand if it was before. Not sure I’d bother with a spare section just make the skimmer bit larger, less baffles in the way makes it more flexible imho
Looking awsome, only thing I might add is adding a lock to the doors depending on how curious your kids are so they don’t accidentally break somthing. How come you didn’t end up going with doors in the middle and sides of the cabinet instead of the panels?

Fantastic! The only comment I have, from experience, is that the roller mat replacement can be fiddly (at least my Clarisea is). It’s good that yours is at the front with easy access, but the stand centre support looks close and you could end up working around it when you change the filter roll? This is the problem I’ve ended up with anyway and it’s more frustrating than it sounds...
yes that is fair feedback! From the good advice of folk here, I will look to switch the skimmer and Fuge section around, but that will still leave the roller mat in the same place. So I will see what is involved in tuning and changing the matt in the Hmahli design to make sure that it will work in that location. Hey Mary, sure thing. The "pro lite" actually ended up being "Signex pvc foam white". It's hard to find information online about it, but its a plastic/wood composite. Amazing stuff, highly recommend! A local reefer who works at a plastics place made the drip tray for me, he also sourced the signex pvc boards. His name is Jason de Vries - top bloke!
Absolutely love working with extruded aluminum, although it is a lot heavier than one would think. Probably because if something like that stand was made out of steel it'd be hollow. That said, can't wait to see how this pans out. Hey Sam. I’d do away with the RO chamber. It’s redundant and just another point of failure. Your bringing the water up anyway from your main reservoir, just add it directly to the tank. My RO comes from direct outside the house. Just put in a second layer of control using a high high water level cutoff.
This is only a small reservoir that is automated to fill on its own direct from the RODI unit. It gives me a way to visually see the amount the tank is using and also access some if I need it. But it is a fair point, I could use my external reservoir and free up some space...
I use an iPad app called Shapr3D with apple pencil, to sketch and 3D modeling all the tank desgin, to simulate all the possible unfit or consturcte failure. befor the app I even didn't know what is 3d modeling...very esay to learn and worth the time

Hey Jared, it was custom made to fit the profile of the floor. Then it literally just sits in there as it is a snug feet around the uprights of the stand.. The poly I popped a little double sided tape down to help hold it in place whilst we were lifting the tank up

regarding the sump design, id have the refugium so it takes 25% of the drain flow (no mechanical filtration) which then goes direct to the return section without passing the skimmer. Have a look at Melevsreef channel he has his refugium in this way and seems like an excellent idea when you listen to his reasons.

I'll be building a very similar sized tank next year and i'm trying to gather as many ideas for it as possible, so I have a few questions for you; - any particular reason you've decided to go with a fuge over an algae scrubber? Only reason I ask is that the company I was speaking to recommend algae scrubbers on their larger tank builds. - why do you prefer a hood over an open top design? - what do you plan on putting in the empty compartment of your stand? - and finally, how did you come to decide on an RODI compartment of that size? Given the dimensions i'm assuming it will be around the 40L mark, and though i've never owned a marine tank of that size, I cant imagine that would last very long before needing to be re-filled? Hey Rheece, thanks for the questions! I’ve never ran a fuge before and like the idea of them. I feel like it should be easier to clean and light than a reactor. I want a hood on this tank to keep light and sound out of the living room. Empty chamber will be just that for now, empty. I always longed for an additional sump chamber in my current build -so figured I’d add one now while I can! My RODI chamber is automated. So it fills itself when empty and turns off when full. My current tank has a 25l reservoir and that’s enough to ensure the RODI unit only turns on every couple days. Hope that helps :)

What I think the ATS makers would say is that with the different algae you get some added benefits over the fuge - like they better remove CO2, oxygenate the water, are better for pods and better at removing heavy metals. In addition you are not introducing macro like chaeto that could have pests. I buy into those arguments plus it takes up less space. The main downside is that you do have to clean it and remove algae about once a week compared to just grabbing a handful of chaeto out every couple of weeks. So it comes down to if you want to do the extra maintenance work - for me I'd prefer to go the ATS route as I think they are more effective and I prefer to skim only 6-8 hours a day (because I don't want to skim out too much bacteria) and the ATS should keep the pH higher (they say you don't need a skimmer with them). If I wanted the cleanest, lowest maintenance option I'd go with the Tunze macro reactor or something similar. Hope this helps ;)
I know you have other tanks but I keep coming back to this... why not have a section for frags in your sump (like in the skimmer section section in front of the RO section)? It may mean you can get rid of a frag tank so your wife will be happy but more importantly it will mean you can snip off corals and keep them in the same water. You won't need it early but after a while I feel like you will be glad you have it - you don't need much area - I would get a GHL Mitras Slimline and you could have just a section that is 15-20cm - the slimline sits right above the water and you could have a removable white or black divider so no spill into the skimmer section. The lights also come in 10cm lengths so if it's 58cm you get a 50cm light and 63 you get a 60cm. That way you have the option to put in the divider later with like an AIO return pump shooting water in. The kitchen cabinets are the PERFECT solution - this build is EPIC! Cam is gonna wanna film this for sure ;)

Just tape mate. It won’t move with the weight of the tank :)

So it comes down to if you want to do the extra maintenance work - for me I'd prefer to go the ATS route as I think they are more effective and I prefer to skim only 6-8 hours a day (because I don't want to skim out too much bacteria) and the ATS should keep the pH higher (they say you don't need a skimmer with them). If I wanted the cleanest, lowest maintenance option I'd go with the Tunze macro reactor or something similar. Hope this helps ;)

I know you have other tanks but I keep coming back to this... why not have a section for frags in your sump (like in the skimmer section section in front of the RO section)? It may mean you can get rid of a frag tank so your wife will be happy but more importantly it will mean you can snip off corals and keep them in the same water. You won't need it early but after a while I feel like you will be glad you have it - you don't need much area - I would get a GHL Mitras Slimline and you could have just a section that is 15-20cm - the slimline sits right above the water and you could have a removable white or black divider so no spill into the skimmer section. The lights also come in 10cm lengths so if it's 58cm you get a 50cm light and 63 you get a 60cm. That way you have the option to put in the divider later with like an AIO return pump shooting water in.
The kitchen cabinets are the PERFECT solution - this build is EPIC! Cam is gonna wanna film this for sure ;)
