      Can you publish with multiple organizations?

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely! Just double check the avenues you're hitting so you're not publishing duplicate content to the same platform. So, if you use Lulu and Amazon, you could deselect Amazon distribution since you'll already be publishing there.

    I work as a legal proofreader for court reporters and am adding low content and medium content books to help me with passive income for retirement and investment. I've been shopping around several different channels and I really really appreciate both this video, as well as several others of yours that I have watched. Thanks for watching! There was one company I didn't add to the list because I didn't get confirmation in time for the video - Tablo. They still have the same limitations through Ingram, but they have the same subscription model as PublishDrive (where you pay annually for distribution and collect 100% royalties with no revenue share with Tablo).

    KDP allows custom trim sizes. I did a couple of 6x4in pocket puzzle books even though that's not on their standard trim size list. The downside with small books is that the cost is the same so the buyer's perceived value for money isn't so good. Also I've noticed the trim can be a little iffy, and the smaller the book, the more noticeable that is.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are very welcome! Yes, despite Amazon being the biggest option, it's NOT the only option. The best direction for people to go is independent. Merely use Amazon as an avenue to build brand awareness and drive traffic to your brand off Amazon. Good luck!

  • @begriddled
    @begriddled ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Offset printing - haven't tried it but it looks to me that distribution would be a serious time sink and expense unless you can get a distributor. The DIY option might seem fine until you take a week or two off in the summer or get sick. With other options everything keeps going on autopilot. When I did a quick assessment re KDP, it made me realise you're actually getting good value for money with Amazon because of all the stuff they do for you - including dealing with returns and getting the books out in a couple of days instead of a weeks when you're doing it yourself and off kayaking down the Grand Canyon

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, I don't disagree, but some viewers will NOT hear me out about how good they have it with some POD companies. It's almost like we've all been spoiled for so long that we forget what it was like NOT having these options. But, for someone who has a following, a marketing and fulfillment plan and everything else, it's a great option.
      Good friend, Ashni Christ, wanted to publish her ebook a few years ago and was appalled at the pricing practices and royalty agreements on all self-publishing platforms. She couldn't see giving up that much of her earnings to a company. So, she published it on Gumroad. She made five figures in earnings her first week and only had to sacrifice like 2% plus platform fees through Gumroad.
      Where some options don't appeal everyone, it still has interest in some.

    Hey Dale! I'm planning on self-publishing journals with my original artwork on the covers and maybe some in the interior. My goal is to make these journals unique and not just full of blank pages. I was wondering if I should copyright my original artwork, because I worry about people possibly trying to copy my artwork. I also don't know how to go about filing a copyright for original artwork, I know how to copyright my books.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm, that's a good question. If you think you'll have to legally enforce your copyright, then file it. I believe USPTO.gov is where you'll find information about that.

    Is there anything else that I should do after uploading my books to Ingramspark, Lulu and Barnes & Noble, in order to get these platforms to distribute my books?

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Make sure you're not duplicate publishing to a platform. So, if you use Lulu, deselect the option to go to Barnes & Noble. Beyond that, you should be good. Keep in mind, just because they choose to distribute your books doesn't mean they'll sell. It's up to you to still market and promote your offerings.

    A warning: I had over 2000 low content books on Amazon KDP. The account was closed for “copyright infringement”. My work was original, not a copy, but because I said it was “inspired by” a long dead artist the account was shut down. I kept appealing, and they finally said it was shut down in error and reinstated it. A month later It was shut down again for the same reason on another book. I am appealing again, and getting rejections. I doubt if the appeals are even read. KDP is a heartless machine that will search for any reason to shut you down. You are not given the option to correct the so-called error, the account is simply closed forever. You cannot access it for reports of previous sales, and you will not receive any royalties due you. I am trying to decide where else to publish my journals. Does anyone have a recommendation?

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man, that sucks. Keep appealing and don't give up. I've known some account holders taking six months to recover their accounts. Sorry to hear you're going through that.

      You'll want to have a legal filed business entity so you can come with an imprint of your own. But, I'm not entirely sure they turn away anyone functioning as a sole prop. Reach out to their customer support. By the way...it's singular - IngramSpark. ;)
