    Haven't watched your videos for a while but when a certain Self Publishing Dale popped up as a follower on Twitter I got a bit excited haha. So thank you. Had to head back and check out your videos again. Especially as I am planning to (eventually) do a self-publishing restart now I know more. Guess I better gather that handy info from your videos...

    The range of lean months makes sense. Summer time! Everyone is enjoying the outdoors. Family gatherings. Vacations. Younger folks out partying, hitting the beaches. When it cools down and people are hiding indoors, they read books!

      I've only written one book, but I used to run a twitter campaign in June-July to get people to buy the book as a beach read. I had some engaged followers post pics of themselves with my boom on the beach. It worked for me. I also ran social media campaigns for Fathers Day and Christmas. I sold c. 2000 copies using no paid ads and no sales funnel. Sales went off a cliff when I came off twitter though.

    Is there a way to publish through amazon outside of the book trim size requirements? I don't want to change the size - 10 x 10.80 - and it's not available on most to all of the size requirements on amazon and the others, but I see books that are still provided outside of the requirements and still available for purchase.. I heard that you would have to go through a different publishing house but any recommendations or a solution to this? I've been looking everywhere..

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว

      The trim sizes are the trim sizes. They are industry standard. Anything outside that is custom and it's going to be complicated. Most custom books are traditionally published.

    When it comes to building our author brand, do you recommend using a pen name or a brand name? Some people say that they’ve run into issues with KDP when they’ve used brand names.
    Also, if you ever get the chance, can you do a video on how to buy ISBNs from Bowker, and can you explain the imprints for these ISBNs? I’ve watched videos about the benefits of buying an ISBN for a book, but I don’t quite understand how imprints work. Who would be the publishing company for our book if we’re buying our own ISBN? (I wonder what would be written under ‘Product Information’ next to Publisher.) I heard that the imprint would be under our personal name. If we buy our own ISBN, would our personal name show up on Amazon, or would people somehow be able to find our personal name by looking up the ISBNs of our books? Is there a way to do this while protecting our privacy? I prefer if the Publisher has the name of a publishing company. I think it’s kind of confusing and I haven’t seen any clear demonstrations on how this process is done. Personally, I would want to either use a brand name or author name for my books, while keeping my personal identity private in all ways.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recommend writing under a name that sounds like a name whether it's a pen name or your actual name. That should go in the Author slot during publishing.
      Your brand can go in the Publisher slot during the publishing process.
      I have covered ISBNs extensively - th-cam.com/video/86XgiczMce0/w-d-xo.html
      In the case of ISBNs, you would use your brand name as your imprint.

    • @chariots8x230
      @chariots8x230 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaleLRoberts Thank you for the tips! Yes, I will probably stick to a pen name that sounds like an actual name. I would have preferred to use a brand name, but I’ve heard of people who had problems with it. Amazon didn’t like the brand name they were using, so they told them to take down all of the books that they published under that name. So, I guess a pen name would probably be a safer option.
      I have watched all of your videos where you talked about buying ISBNs. I’ve personally only used free ISBNs so far, so I’m totally new to the process of buying an ISBN. I like your idea about using our brand name for the Publisher, and picking that brand name as the imprint. I’ve never purchased an ISBN from Bowker though, so I’m not sure what the process would be to change the imprint into our brand name. I’m not sure if it would be easy to change it into my brand name, and if this process is free or not.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Contact Bowker for guidance. I believe you can't change any imprints already published. But, if you want to change future iterations, you should be good. Again, Bowker will have your answer.

    OKAY.... my illustrator (my daughter) and I are officially on our way to hop on the Crazy Train..
    Im wondering if you or anyone you know could freelance, and upload my book to KDP. All the illustrations were made in Procreate but KDP if flipping pictures, she's not sure of the bleed and margins.... (I'm "JUST " the writer and am challenged with technology). We're so frustrated and have decided to hire someone, before insanity sets in completely. This book was a labor of love and we're ready for it to be an actual hard cover book with that wonderful new book smell, that we can hold in our hands! All the files are in PDF. Do you have any suggestions? Pleeeeaaaase. Thanks so much!

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need a formatter. Here's my vetted list of Fiverr providers - dalelinks.com/list
      I don't recommend that your hire someone to upload for you. Amazon makes this really difficult with their 2-factor authentication, and that person then has access to your Amazon account and banking information.
      I recommend having the files formatted and uploading them yourself. You need 1 PDF for the manuscript and 1 for the cover.

    I changed a book from 7.25 to 6.99. The book had been in kdp for 11 months. I was then told that I did not have permission to my cover. I sent receipts and was told oh ok all is fine but they had taken the book off of Amazon and I would have to redo. Foolish. Then I changed a book from7.25 to 7.10 and was told that I had used spiral in my title so I needed to redo. This book also had been in kdp for 11 months. I called and stated no where in my title is the word spiral. After three extra days and one phone call two emails I was informed to go ahead and upload again. Now every time I upload a low content book I am informed I have the word spiral in the title. I have to call or chat and send emails again and again. Is anyone else having these issues? I never use the word spiral anywhere in kdp creation of books.

      1,000 subs is no small feat. So, I could understand this if you had 1,000 subs. If you're starting from scratch and you clear the inactive subsribers on a regular basis, you may never have to pay.
