I’m an auctioneer here in the USA. That mistake and do over would never fly here!! Not in my state, anyway. Once the auctioneer says SOLD it’s sold! The mistake would have been on the auctioneer. And I’m A little confused anyway. The worker said many many times it was all one lot, 6400 CD’s, more out back, all being sold as one. I don’t think anyone was confused except the auctioneer. And may I add that 25% buyers premium (commission) is outrageous!!! I’ve never ever heard of a % that high!! Avg here is 12-15%. But still a great haul for Tom and a super fun video to watch!! Thanks!!
Yeah the 25% is high. The most we normally get are %15 - %22 but this is how these guys make their money. The mistake was a genuine miscommunication. The CD discs are at the front and the cases and artworks were at the back of the house hence the confusion. This was a hard one for them due to the large amounts of stuff in a very tight space inside the garage.
Yes it was confusing as they were separated into 3 lots but they really couldn’t sell each lot separately as many of the cases were empty with the discs in the draws in lot 1. So no one wants to buy boxes with empty cases. It was an error by them. Thom was planning to bid on all three lots so it worked out better for him but it was also stressful as he had to start again after getting such a great price on lot 1.
WOW! What an amazing haul. It just goes to show… what goes around comes around! Tom helped you out with your great container book haul, and in return he got this incredible deal - good karma! Great times for both of you - well done.
Estate sale auctions can be awesome ways to get inventory. I got 3000 books for $50 once. Its definitely worth it to check them out to pick up large hauls but lots of work. Always great to see you and Thom having fun.
Had a similiar score when I bought out part of a book shop (the whole Sports section, around 450 books) for £2.40, sad story of a book store closing down as the seller was ill and no one wanted the stock. It's a great feeling, but also a sombre one when you score big at someone else's expense
Hey Mel Im the random subscriber you met ( Steve ) It was great to meet you and Tom in Person . Great Haul for Tom, I Got those numberplates and hubcaps you were looking at and the wooden Oil Boxes Tom mentioned , got 5 Boxes for $100 and already sold one for $200. Artie and the Auctioneer are great blokes and Im sure it was a Genuine mistake , They are true champions . The deal Tom Got isn't random at auction its the only way I Buy stuff now , its very Profitable maybe we will see some more auction vids from you . Was great to meet you .
Hi Steve! So good to meet you! Yes it was definitely just miscommunication that caused the mistake. I used the text just to make it clear what was happening in the video to others. In the end it all worked out well for Thom who was preparing to bid on all three lots anyway. I’ll phone you in the next week to chat about what we discussed also xxx
Mel... It's good to see you and Thom in a collaborative effort to help out one another! Have alway's been of the "Scratch your back mentality!" Keep up the good fight throughout ALL your endeavors!😊👍🐿
What an amazing haul, Congrats Thom! At least he cracked a smile or two! Need to see more of that Thom, lol. Glad you enjoyed the auction Mel, cool video! Blessings
@@backfromburnout There were A LOT of good titles in there. Flipping through some of those definitely got me excited. Thom's probably floating through his warehouse.
That was a herculean haul, I have no idea how you fitted all of that into the truck! A mega bargain, what a result! A soon as I saw them standing in the long grass, i thought SNAKES! Thanks Mel, such an interesting video!
Worked for an auction house for 16 years and sometimes cataloged lots would be changed on the fly. The key, when it’s done is to be very clear with the crowd as they start to sell the changed lot to avoid just such situations. Usually the fine print in the terms, as you register will state the auction house had the right to do so and to settle any and all disputes. But no auctioneer likes to restart a sale over, after the gavel strikes. It slows the pace of the sale and annoys the bidders, especially if the winner then becomes the loser.
Always love when there isn't a lot of competition for media! So many media sellers fail to show up to awesome spots like this was! Super fun! :) I've yet to go to an auction myself, but maybe someday! :)
I won my first online auction for some weapon holsters last month. Bidding started at $200 for 36 of them (2 listings with multi-quantity) that would consistently sold for $70-80 each. I was the only bid until the day before it ended and then got in a little bidding war and had to ask my husband if he was okay with me spending more. We set the cap at $600 and luckily ended up winning at $510+fees so it was just under $600 all in! Whew! An hour and a half drive each way and I listed immediately, selling 3 the first day.
ohhhhhh myyyyyyy!!!!! I would have flipped out in the car afterwards if that was me LOL. what a great haul and a ton of work for Tom but so worth it. Great Video Mel :)
Well done thom! Awesome haul! Miss going to auctions used to go to them every week at the start of my reselling journey. Good luck with the sorting. Was giggling when the guy was giving you both advice on how to sell on eBay.
Hi Mel, I am a new subscriber from Canada. I had the pleasure of watching you with Paul ( my favourite American reseller ) on the weekend and have been binging your videos ever since. Love your contagious laugh, energy and vibrant spirit! All the best as you move forward with your new location. Reading is a passion of mine so seeing all of the books that pass through your hands is so much fun.
Fantastic haul Thom. You got it even though the Auctioneer make that silly mistake. Mel when you were looking at the box of cds I noticed one was the Beatles on the Abbey Road crossing. Many years ago when they were first famous I used to live very close to this crossing. Hope Thom showed you some of the good ones so if you see them on your travels you too can buy them.
That’s so cool Joan! Thank you for sharing! Just an honest mistake with the auctioneer and some miscommunication but I was trying to make it so everyone understood what had happened. It all worked out in the end and Thom is very happy with the result.
Memories of picking up CD'S from a wholesalers garage sale. Best friend had a box between his legs and a box on his lap, he was so stiff after the 2hr drive home. There were CDs packed loosely beside my daughters on the back seat that would slide over when you took a corner too fast. The boot had CD'S in every crevice including around and under the spare wheel. 😂😅😊
Mel your energy is so much fun and uplifting. If I'm ever in Australia we're going to an auction together. "Sourcing Australia" would be a major adventure.

At $270 (+25%=$337.50 for dealer fees) for 6,300 CD's that's still less than $0.06 a CD. That's a steal
