  • Affinity Photo - Use Channels To Make Fine Selections
An Italian video was posted in the Facebook Group, Affinity Designer and Photo Group by Bill Mabey. The video showed a tree being cut out of the sky area by using the Channels panel.
I am assuming to replace the original sky with a new more dramatic sky. The only trouble is the original video not only has Italian menu names but it also has no voice over (in any language) to help guide what is going on.
So, I have adapted it and slowed it down for non-Italian, English speaking Affinity Photo users.
The 2 images used in the video are from Pixabay and the links are

    and

After some valid bad comments about this video, I was directed to a Serif video, which I will link below. But may I just point out I wasn't trying to claim this was the way do this, I was just converting the Italian video as best I could, I wasn't even sure where he/she was even going with it I was just guessing.

There's just too much work being done here. All you have to do to change the sky with an accurate selection is to select the Blue channel, the right click and Load to Pixel Selection, then bring back all the channels so you have the original composite image and click the delete key. The sky is gone, the tree selection is perfect and you can put a new sky in the background. Then make color and whatever adjustments to each layer and merge them together. It's very simple.

After some valid bad comments about this video, I was sent a link to a proper Serif Video on the subject, which I'll add at the end. In my defence though I wasn't claiming it to be my idea or even the best way to do this sort of selection. I was just trying to show other Facebook group members what was going on in the Italian video. I had no idea where the maker was going with the selection process, I was guessing it was to change the sky. But it may have been to do what is done in this Serif video.

I have a horrible feeling, looking back at the finished image. That maybe I went over the tree area too much, taking away the blue found in the green of the leaves. As the tree ends up looking a bit dull (I think) so maybe best to just go over it a few times to get the gaps in the tree branches and leave some colour in the tree, maybe????

I like the Affinity software, but this process makes me realize why Adobe is king. In PS, just got to channels, duplicate the channel, adjust the levels, select the channel, go back to layers and add a layer mask, it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. I tried using channels for selection in Affinity, I just got very frustrated, and this tutorial makes it seem like it’s making something simple into something complicated.
