Hey! Loved this video...you showed me a professional way of separating the flame from the background, was doing this with screen and blend ranges...works really well. I was wondering about comparing the two techniques and what you could see are the pros and cons between the two methods
Thanks for your kind words, Ray ! I’ll consider making a comparison video. The main difference is that screen only works with black background, and this technique works with any contrasting background + its easier to repurpose your assets :)

For the Win users. "Assets": You have to copy the layer and add it manually in the assets menu.

Good stuff bro. This was right on the money. I tried doing this with hair of a model and the selection is rather light on the pixel selection. I think this technique needs another step to make a solid selection that contains more dense pixel selection. For the fire, it's awsome but for a human and it's hair....I think I need to study up on Alpha Channel selections.
Can the Channels Layer technique of selecting also be used for selecting things and people in an image ?
Hey Augustya, honestly I wouldn't bother using channels for selecting things and people. It works best when you have difficult to select substances (like fire, clouds, etc.) For all else I would use different selection methods. Hope this helps! 👌🏽

A quicker and easier way would be to set the blend mode of the fire image to Screen then you would not need to make any Levels layers or other adjustments and selections. Screen blend mode removes black backgrounds in image composites (without having to do cut out).
I know. In this case that would indeed work too :) So maybe fire wasn’t the best example to make a selection using channels. However, this method also works with other colored background (not just black) 👌🏼
Great tutorial for complex selections. Thank you. But in this case, could we not have just pasted the photo of the fire as it is, adjusted the black point and changed the blend mode to screen? That would have got rid of all the black in the fire photo and the result would have been the same as what you achieved. Just a thought.
Also in this case, could we not have selected the green channel next and added the selection to that of the red channel? And then do the blue channel and add that selection to the other two? That way we would have got the whole fire instead of just the shiny bits. Is there a way to do that?
You’re very right. In most cases where you’ve got a black/dark background you can simply set the blend mode to screen. But this won’t allow you to save your cut out in assets :) And regarding the channels, in general there isn’t much blue and green in fire, so there’s not much more to add to the selection of the red channel I guess ! How could you do this for separating water splashes from the background?
As long as the splashes really stand out from the background, the same technique can be applied!

Thanks for this tutorial. Question - the images you used were of fire that was already on a black background, but how would you make a selection of fire that isn't on a black background?
That’s gonna be a lot harder. It would involve much more masking. But pictures of fire often have a dark background, so selecting with channels works in most cases ! And as others mentioned already, putting the fire in screen blending mode helps a lot. Hope this helps ! Have a beautiful transition into 2021 👊🏼💫
