one of the most honest car reviews I've watched. Love those tanks , comfortable ride , low maintenance cost, great mpg for a V8 and bullet proof. Personally I think it looks even good I don't care if 6 out of 10 people say it's an old men's car. At least old people know what's good for them. Great video !
Marcus Hoehmann I know you made your comment about this Mercury two years ago but I must admit that I agree with what you wrote. Later for fools who knock this machine as an "old man's car"...this thing IS bulletproof! Peace!
Seen your video a few times, I've always been a big fan of the Grand Marquis! Many say it's an oldman car, or since I'm Mexican a drug dealers car! I finally decided to buy one, picked it up yesterday! 06 with 49,700 miles tungsten grey! Love it! Great video
Good review. Just inherited my dad's 02' Grand Marquis with only 66k miles. I love this car and am hoping to keep it going strong for at least another decade with proper regular maintenance. They don't make big solid USA cars this good anymore.
love the mercury grand marquis ,mine is an 07....ordered trak-lok from amazon for about $226 found 3.31 ring and pinion on ebay with less than 10k mi. for $50.put in dual exhaust with 40 series flo-masters. installed FORD RACING mustang intake manifold
I bought a preowned 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis LS Ultimate Edition with 117,000 for 5,000 drive out. It has the standard 4.6L or 281 cubic inch motor with about 239 horse power and factory dual exhaust. It was the lowest priced vehicle on the lot. It was in great condition when I bought it. One of the best cars I have ever owned low maintenance and it does run. It is a grandpa's car but grandpa's has some giddy up. I was surprised at how well it performed. I have red lined a couple of times but for the most part I baby it. I highly recommend these cars.
Being 56 yrs old, I have only bought Grand Marquis for the last 28 years. I'm on my 6th Grand Marquis a 2003 CTE "Custom Tasca Edition". Besides changing the plastic intake manifolds a few times, these cars have never ever let me done. Never a tow in 28 yrs! I usually get about 225,000 miles before I dump them and get another. Very comfortable and reliable ride!
I'd love to say mine was the same, but I had to let her go after 136K miles sadly. Transmission issues. Granted, I didn't drive it like a grandpa either.
@@TheDutchTexan Always flushed tranny with filter o ring change about every 45,000 and my CTE "Custom Tasca Edition" not quite a Papa's car. Do understand the Grand Marquis being a grandfathers car but I only buy it from a grandpa. They baby their cars with low mileage, never over 55 mph on highway, always changing the oil at 3,000 or 3 months and their the 1st to have it in a garage as soon as there's a problem. Only will buy from the elderly.
I went from a P71 Crown Vic over to a 2015 Ford Focus beginning of this year, and ended up regretting it 8 months later due to long term problems with body aches, cramps, etc. Traded in the Focus for a 2009 Grand Marquis LS with 66,000 miles, 1 owner and garage kept.
Over all it’s a pretty fair review. I just got my used 2004 and the two points I have an issue with is at highway speed I don’t have a problem pointing it where I want it to go and tracks on the curves great so far. The other was while looking at the owners manual I thought I saw where there was an option for a limited slip differential. Even with the open diff., it still used the brakes to slow the wheel spin. It has a button to turn this off if you need to. The main thing I bought it for was for mileage and less to break down. I have a Jeep that fiat de-engineered and turned it into a pile of something that was originally an icon of reliability that helped win wars. You sure wouldn’t want to go off-roading without a support vehicle now.
I used to consistently get 21mpg. I now am in process of manual swapping my 2003 because the trans went. It will probably get better! Its easy to swap rears, its a ford 8.8 which was in almost all rwd fords and has tremendous aftermarket. I will be sourcing a 4.10 locker from an explorer.
I love the Grand Marquis. I'm on my third one. The first one was a 2003, the first year for the new front suspension, rack and pinion steering, and four wheel disc brakes. I bought it with 79,000 miles on it, and ran it up to 264,000, with very few problems. I gave it to my daughter and son in law, and they drove it for several years. The next one was a 2006. It had 101,000 on it when I bought it, and currently has 289,000. I still have it. It shows the wear of being used as a daily driver, but still runs just fine. I happened upon a 2007 in near new condition, with 47,000 miles on it, and bought it. This was the most expensive one of the bunch at $9,900, but it's absolutely beautiful. Looks like it just came off the showroom floor. All three are/were LS models. I intend to keep driving the 2006 until the engine fails, then I'll start driving the 47,000 mile 2007. I would love to have a limited slip differential, but for what I use it for, mostly long distance trips, it really doesn't matter that much, and I absolutely love the 2.73 rear axle and overdrive. 30+ mpg on the highway at 65 mph is amazing, and the engine and transmission are turning over just above idle. Probably why they last so long. I'm 64, and I want a big, comfortable, V8 powered rear wheel drive car that just floats over the road. I do have a Mustang for when I feel like driving something sportier, but I'd sure hate to drive that cross country. I would likely be in considerable pain. These cars have very few problems in my experience. My rear air suspension failed on both the '03 and '06. I replaced the airbags with coil springs, which worked just fine. The blend door actuator for the climate control tends to fail, the plastic gears in it strip out. Because the dash has to come out to replace it, I just rigged it. I removed the right airbag and glovebox, used a 3 foot long piece of rebar to make a chisel, and reached through the airbag opening and broke off the little tabs where the retainer screws go, and it dropped down where I could get to the wires and cut them. I jammed the blend door in the full A/C position and left it. We don't need heat here in the Phoenix, AZ area, and if it gets too cold, I just put on a jacket. The 4.6L SOHC 2 valve has a plastic intake manifold, and I had one start leaking. I replaced it and it was fine from then on. I had one alternator fail. $50 at Autozone. I also had to replace the serpentine belt tensioner on the '03 and '06. That's pretty much it. Not bad considering just how many miles I have put on these cars. These are the last of the '70s style American land yachts, and they are getting harder and harder to find. The prices on nice ones are going way up. Believe it or not, as big as these cars are, a V8 Dodge Challenger is almost 500 pounds heavier.
Nice write up! I still miss mine. I had the blend door issue myself and it costs a lot to get fixed because indeed, the dash needs to come out. The car got hailed on and then dropped the transmission at 135K miles. I drove it pretty hard though so it was to be expected. Decided to move on because they wanted $3500 for the fix which far exceeded the vehicles value at that time. And I could hear that blend door making noise again too.
I wont part with my 07 MGM LS. 150k miles and the best daily driver Ive ever owned. For a 2 ton car it actually handles pretty well. I commute through a tight windy mountain road twice a day. With the stock sway bars and suspension, no rear airbags it handles the turns and hills very well as long as the center armrests are down to keep me from sliding across the seat 😆 Although the stock sways do a pretty surprising job when pushed into turns the thicker 1" sway bars from a P71 would make a huge improvement for my commute.
I bought a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis LS last March. It had 95,000 miles, one owner. With all service records showing serviced at the dealer every 3000 miles. It was mint. Only thing CD player had issues and I still like cd's. I took it to the dealer for the oil change last July. They found no issues. I did have them try and find an original stereo, there were two left. I had to have it, because I did not want a jury rigged system. This way it was plug and play. I love this car. Comfortable leather seats. I think it handles great, since I am not an Indy driver. I took it on trip last week ( first one) from Fresno to Placerville. It averaged 25 MPG and never bogged down driving uphill. The other great thing about the car is you do not have to bash your head in, to get in and out. Last car was 93 Old's 88.When motor died I started looking at new cars. Unless you buy an over priced SUV, I would bash my head in getting in and out. I then drove my 68 F100 for a year looking for something better. Then I came across the Mercury. We'll worth the wait .
I still miss mine. The trans took a dump at 130k miles and they wanted close to 4K for repair so I let it go and got a 2018 Passat GT. Way faster, better in the corners but boy, it will never come close to how quiet and nice the Grand Marquis rolled down the street!
At first I did not think I was going to like this video, but I must say I did enjoy it. You reinforced everything I like about these cars. I have a 2003 Grand Marquis and 2011 Crown Victoria. I love them both.
Thank you! The only thing I don't like about them is the HVAC controls after owning it for 4 years and 60k miles. Prone to failure and expensive to fix.
$5.00 for a pack of o rings isn't too bad of a fix and a lot of times that is the malfunction .Thanks for the video ,I learned something .As you can see I own a 99 & 06 Merc Marquis for about 1 yr and so far I love them .
Wow man I have to say this was the best car review I've seen. I may be biased because I'm inheriting this car and picking it up tomorrow, but the video was really well done. I'm a professional motion graphics artist and the B-roll used in examples such as when you tested the brakes and when hitting the gas were used well and made the flow of the video much more entertaining than the general video I see. Clearly this was a performance review but it would have bee nice to perhaps see a more detailed shot of the interior dash and cup holders and what not (or lack there of). Altogether the time it clearly took to attach cameras in several different positions on a mount, the editing (however simple enough cause these things take time), and the sheer knowledge of the performance features gave me a great sense of understanding how this car will feel to own and drive. I just want to say thanks for your time and effort affording me the luxury of a first hand look of this awesome car.
My second ever car review. The ones I do now are a lot different. I actually still own the car, but with over 100K highway miles and a hail storm later it no longer looks as clean sadly. I wish I could put it in a garage but that is where my 05 Mustang lives. If I ever get another car I would shoot another review in the same style just to see if I can still make it work by myself.
I own a 97 currently. First car, didn't maintain it at all. never changed the oil. Threw a rod at 6000+ miles. Which, Ive heard thats a pretty long time, especially for a car I bought with 174000+ miles on it. Lesson learned from it the hard way, did an engine swap with an 05 out of a junkyard. BUT, I developed a valve guide seal leak, I rushed the swap and didnt take the engine apart when I bought it. I'm near the end of its warranty, I'm just going to sell the whole car back to the junk yard. I love these cars, I will be purchasing a newer model. Owning one keeps your insurance low, they are exceptionally comfortable. It is really easy to lose track of how fast youre going on the freeway, due to the fact that it just floats along with no effort. going 115 feels like nothing, and stepping on it after 60, youll get there in no time. The whole car is built to last and it is a bulletproof design, take care of it, and it will go a long way. I look forward to my next one.
I got one of these & love it. They really shine when cruising on the interstate or just simple driving, cushy smooth ride. RWD are so much better in that regard to me.
I enjoyed the video and have read all the comments here and am glad to hear there are many out there that praise this iconic panther platform, son of a tank sedan. I have recently acquired a 2001 MGM LS that I first I saw at a local dealer's website. Love at first sight is an understatement here as I willingly traded my highly sought after low mileage (67K) '09 Regular Cab Tacoma for the Marquis plus $500 from the dealer for a new set of tires. The Michelins on it are like new with no signs of cracking and loads of tread but are 9 years old... I'm still running them on the LS for now as I travel in a rural area and have a short commute at night to my job working graveyard at a 24 hour 'gas and grub'. The condition of this LS is near 'Showroom' ..."Like New" ... just 54K on the odometer, a real beauty with the faux carriage convertible cloth top, dark/navy blue over a light blue gorgeous body and yes the car obviously was garaged its entire life. I'm told by the dealer it was owned by the original 'Church Lady' who drove less than 3,500 miles every year, the CARFAX tells a story of immaculate care and attention to this car in every conceivable manner. She had the money apparently and the desire to have this car maintained to perfection at every turn. Yes, this '01 MGMLS surely was loved by and cherished by its one and only owner that likely took her blue haired church lady friends to church every Sunday before parking her LS baby back in the garage and by the way only letting her local dealer's garage service it and the CARFAX supplied, well it reads like a juvenile delinquent's rap sheet. I hope to get many more years of service from this car as I am the quintessential old man (60 yrs. old) and I expect this car will out last me in the end. Currently I'm without power door locks, trunk release, one touch window down and the driver's door keypad and the remote fob are all inoperative. Secondly just got'ta say here that the OEM intake 'all plastic' manifold is still performing well (no leaks noted) but I do intend on having it R & R'd with the better after market one... The recent Dorman replacement seems to be one possibility at 1/2 the cost of Ford's replacement part. Does anyone here care to say what they think either way on this Dorman v. Ford's more expensive part. I don't know where I'll have the work done as of yet; if I was younger and not out of shape and had the tools I'd consider doing the job myself. I'd like to consider having a qualified mobile mechanic do the job as this would allow me to be sure that whomever does the job won't try to take short cuts or hide any mis-steps along the way.
Hey, bud, I've got the faux top too but I had to go down to Queens NY to get it, silver w. black. Do yourself a favor and go to a Hobby Lobby and get some acrylic paint in dark blue. Mix it well with some water and roll it on over your wet top with a paint roller. This makes a mess but your top will look like new.
I bought a 2009 ultimate edition back in late Feb. from a dealer, one owner fleet maintained 208k miles car was in excellent condition. I put it in service march 1st as a taxi it now has 234 K miles I keep it as nice as the day I got it, it makes my living. all I've done is regular maintenance. next car will be another marquis or P71....great cars
Whenever I see this video of my grand marquis I feel sad. It isn't the mileage (103K as we speak) but the hail storm that dinged it up. It still has old school steel, so it wasn't as banged up as other cars in the neighborhood but still. It still rides great. I have had to replace the HVAC controls at around 70K, front shocks at 90K and the alternator around 100K. Save for the AC it was all routine maintenance.
The Dutch Texan still a pretty car. I love that color, mine is sky blue. a color I wasn't to fond of, but it grew on me! I just saw another TH-cam video of an 09 identical to mine with 16,000 miles...beautiful. yours will go another 200 K if its taken care of.
I liked the intro :) And you agreed with my suggestions for improving your reviews. It's quite interesting what car brands you have there in the US because in Germany I only now the typical brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VolksWagen, Ford, Opel, Porsche or some Japanese, Birtish, French or Italian brands. But I never heard before of a brand named "Mercury". Thumps Up man :D
It is not fun in the winter at all with the one wheel peel! But other than that (and the AC control unit and an alternator) it’s been pretty darn reliable for me!
I've always been curious to what the advantages are of having overdrive on and off, does one deliver better performance than the other, is one better for hwy driving?
When you are just driving around you leave everything alone. When you put your foot in it from cruising you want to turn off overdrive before you do so to prevent damage to the overdrive band. Also, when you are going down a steep hill you want to stay out of overdrive to utilize engine braking.
Panthers can be made to handle fairly well but the tradeoff is less ride. Install police struts and coils, front and rear. Install police front sway bar and 21mm rear bar from 1998-2002 HPP optioned cars. You can go a little further with poly bushings and upgraded end links. I would disable VAPS as I prefer linear assist power steering but that is a personal preference thing.
Installing dual exhaust from retired CVPI is good for 15 hp, no tune required. If you install police air box, snorkel, MAF, and PCM, that is good for 250. Police setup will run regular gas which saves $.
Had an 07 Grand Marquis GS I traded it in on a 2014 Chrysler 300c AWD with the5.7 HEMI Pano moonroof heated and cooled leather seats Alpine stereo and all ........... GOD DO I MISS MY GRAND MARQUIS!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks man! And yeah, the brakes are adequate! You definitely don't want to come in too hot because it won't slow down like my mustang or my wife's focus would!
Hello..I have a 2006 Grand Marquis LS Ultimate model with only 48k miles....has all options including the air suspension....my drivers side power window stopped working and than suddenly a few days later it started working again ...the local Firestone shop charged me a reasonable $49 to diagnose and they told me it went off of its track so they put it back on the track and it started to work again .....also my ABS and traction control lights come on but only intermittently...maybe every 8 th time I take the car out.....When they come on the brakes appear fine as usual so I have not taken it anywhere to get checked out....plus I live now on a very small fixed income......any ideas or suggestions what would cause the drivers side window to come off of its track ? and also why the ABS light ( and at time also the traction control light with it ) will come on but only intermittently ?.....Thank you and good driving video ......the only thing I do not love about mine is the air suspension ...at times when turning the engine off the air suspension motor mounted under the hood will run and make a loud noise for about 15 seconds from time to time ( at least that is what my local Ford dealer told me the noise was from )....and also when I had new tires installed on the car at an independent tire shop they did not turn off the air suspension using the button located in the trunk and only later while looking for something else in my owners manual did I discover Ford says turn it OFF before lifting the car.
+nash benkard I'd like to see that manual. You got it backwards. Traction control helps you get out of those types of situations where there is LESS traction and one wheel is just spinning ( shallow sand, mud, snow, ice) Traction control is to accelerating as Anti-Lock brakes are to decelerating. In fact that's how it works using ABS. TC stops the wheels from spinning too fast and not gripping. ABS keeps them from locking up in a skid. You said "stuck" If vehicle is stuck to the point where neither drive wheel is able to turn TC won't help you if it's on or off. You need 4WD or tow vehicle in that case.
Just wanted to say I liked the video. I bought a 2007 MGM-GS with only 38K miles on it back in July, and I love it. It's the same exterior color as yours in fact. Mine's a bit of a unicorn though. It's the GS model and a stripper at that. The only option shown on the window sticker is a front license plate bracket (required in Texas). But, it has leather! I was concerned that would be a problem in the Texas summer, but since it's garage kept, it really hasn't been a problem. I plan on keeping it for awhile and maybe even putting dual exhaust and P71 suspension parts on it for better handling.
Mine is sitting outside, it no longer looks this clean at 110K miles unfortunately. About a year ago hail got the better of her. She still looks pretty from 20' though, and the paint shines up nicely when washed. It is time to send her to a new owner sometime this year I think. She has served me well over the years, never left me stranded. And I love cruising at 80. So comfortable, and it turns just shy of 2K rpm. My potential next car won't do that I bet!
I just picked one up. 2006. watched your video and i share all the same thoughts as you, i bought mine for the same reason. Just thought i would share.
Finnally a truly honest review thanks for that. I have a 2011 interceptor and the suspension is tighter, its pretty quick because its got 3.73 gears. If the grand marquis had 3.73 gears, you probably wouldn't notice the difference between the two. I hate daily driving my cvpi because it's uncomfortable.
This thing is a boat, it floats over everything. There is a corner in my commute that has some irregularities, the grand marquis soaks them up, the mustang does not.
I have a baby on the way so I purchased a 2005 LS. So far I love it. city driving isn't the best but I feel like the king of the highway HAHA!. Just wish these cars had a better paint job from the factory. I will be upgrading that.
+Christopher Metz do you have a white one by any chance? They are notorious for paint issues. I am loosing paint up front, but that is because of rock chips and higher speed driving.
The Dutch Texan yes I do have a white model. I have a few patched spots and a place that is starting to chip up. I'm planning on coating it in Plasti Dip just to so that it doesn't get any worse. Also, those cars are so cheap now I find it hard to justify spending much money on making it look good LOL.
I worked in TV in Indy for several years. One May, former Indy 500 Champ Dario Franchitti was in the studio for an interview and I was working. He was complaining about his rental car (off the air) saying the Grand Marquis was the worst car he'd ever driven. I chuckled, because I LOVE the Grand Marquis and Crown Vics, (they're comfy) but it just goes to show you what someone who has access to the finest cars in the world thinks. He hated it.
Hahaha! Well, if I have to compare it to most of the cars I have driven now it is quite terrible. But, it excels at what it does well. And that is putting the cruise control on at 80 and just let the miles fly by. The only thing you hear is wind noise too, it runs just shy of 2K rpm at that speed.
I've always liked Grand Marquis. My father-in-law used to have a Town Car and I always liked driving that - which I guess is pretty similar. Good review!
The town car is also a panther platform car. It's just a bit longer and heavier. But it is way more upscale! My grand marquis slots in right in between the crown vic and the town car when it comes to luxury level. (although, I think it's a wash... I would have gotten a crown vic if I could find a decent one at the time of purchase).
Excellent Car review first time watching your Channel just bought a 2006 nice car clean inside not sure if I'm going to do what I wanted to do with the first place because I do like how clean it is
Mine stayed stock until I sold it. Ended up dropping the transmission on it at 135K miles or so and repair would have been north of what the car was worth.
If you google stuff those cookies transfer to TH-cam as well! Google owns TH-cam so that only makes sense! I still miss mine, I had to let it go after the transmission went. They wanted too much money to replace it. I still find myself looking every once and a while. I might find myself in another one... So comfortable!
99 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 90k miles and 07 Lincoln Town Car Designer Edition 65k miles These are wonderful cars the end of an era cant say enough good things about them very few mechanical issues just change the oil a couple times a year and do a transmission and rear end service every 50 to 60k miles and these cars can last a lifetime.
Hahaha!).
+The Dutch Texan haha inderdaad!
I was initially looking for a black on black car but was unable to find one. So I settled on the “Norsea Blue” which I liked too! I still miss it to this day. Such a comfortable boat!
Question. Can the millage digital read out display be manipulated? In other words can a person adjust the millage read out to read less miles when it actually has more miles on it?Thank you.
I am sure it can with the right software tools. If a car shows very low miles look for excessive wear on the interior like carpet, steering wheel, gas and brake pedal covers. A car fax would be helpful too, those record mileage at each service.
I just purchased a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis LS. I was extremely impressed with the comfort and smooth ride when I took it out and bought it on the spot. Since then I have been looking at any info I can find. Your video is exactly what I have experienced. It's a VERY comfortable car and perfect for a 43 year old with a family. You just can't race IROCs with it... Quick question - I know a fast turn signal usually means a light it out somewhere but they're all good. Is this normal? I get one slow click... then it's clickclickclick. I was trying to listen to yours in the video but couldn't tell. Thanks! Great review!
Nope, mine definitely just does click click click in the same succession so I don't know what is going on with yours. I know the clicker is actually an old fashioned relay like in the old days. And you can still race IROCs with it, just don't expect to win. LOL! (unless you get some work done).
+The Dutch Texan Well I forgot to post this 6 months ago. :) You were right. I didn't realize that there's *2* bulbs in each tail light. Only one was working on each side so it looked like it was ok but after I tore it down I realized the mistake. I'm still extremely happy with my purchase. Been to New Hampshire twice with this car and 180 miles on cruise at 70 MPH you feel nothing. Smooth driving! Comfort and power to spare.
im a fan of the fully digital dash, but i notice they're only common in 2001 or 2005 grand marquis, do you know why that is? and is it possible to buy a fully digital dash and install it into a newer grand marquis that doesn't have one?
+Jesse Hargrove I don't think you can get the digi dash in a newer 06< grand marquis. It's cool, but also very very 80's-90's in my opinion. I'd rather keep the regular dash for simplicity. I am sure people have swapped dashboards, but I doubt it was without issue.
It sounded like when you punched it from the stop sign that the rear wheels spun a little. That will hurt your acceleration. Still looked like 0-50 was about 7 seconds. Not bad for a tank. My mom has one same year and color. She's a 78 year old great grandmother. How's that make you feel?
Yeah I don't mind driving it either except for the damn visor is broken and won't stay up and the a/c quit a few months back. But hell I can live w/o a/c I drive a '68 F100 390cu. in.w/ Drum brakes and no PS! If it's over 75F out. you need a shower after parallel parking that sob.I'm good at it now!
Nice video man looking at buying one of these in the summer and putting a new exhaust on it. Want a comfortable, cheap, big, reliable car. These cars aren't known as the king of the highway for nothing!
There is so much I would like to do with mine but will probably never do. Luckily there are others that can follow through. I would love to turn it into a 500-600whp daily.
The Dutch Texan quick question i heard ford sedans some still have front bench seats all i could see in this video was the hand rests in the middle i s it a bench seat or no?
My god man you are talking about one of the most beautiful highway cars on the road today and its still has a good look to it. I really love it when people compare these cars to sport cars LOL no comparison at all its like comparing apples to oranges. This car is also beautiful in the city as well as on the highway not sure what you are talking about on that point.
Still running it today. It doesn’t look like this anymore though. The hail and 100K+ highway driving got to it. And naturally one makes a comparison, it has a V8. I still fantasize about fixing it up, suspension, nice wheels, sticky rubber and some engine work... But, different priorities. So it stays the highway warrior it is now. Cruising 80 at a hair below 2K rpm and getting over 20mpg doing it.
i got an 03 jetta as my first car but it has been a ton of trouble. considering getting a job and selling the car. I'm interested in grand marquis but does it seem like too much of an old man car for a 16 y/o? any major problems with the car?
+Clipperdude123 first, you can not get a better car engine and trans wise. It does not make a lot of power, but it handles abuse like no other. Also, it pulls pretty darn good on the highway. I have often toyed with the idea of supercharging it. The AC system is a POS though, and a dash out procedure depending on what goes wrong. Make sure it works 100% with no weird sounds going from heat to cold. It is the blend door actuator (dash out procedure) and control unit that goes wrong. Also, 06's seem to have paint problems, especially the white ones. Get a later model with the least amount of miles. Stay away from ex rental cars and make sure the carfax is clean!
Clipperdude123 Another great reason to get it is that cops will leave you alone unless your doing something really stupid. They will just assume your some old guy instead of a teenager they can harass.
@@TheDutchTexan I have 2006 Crown Victoria LX for the past 3 years. I'm not sure if you are aware but the 4.6 V8 has a major flaw with its plastic intake manifold. They are known to leak coolant because they develop cracks. Manifold should NOT be plastic!! I only have 72 k miles. It's major work
Hey bud I just picked up a 2008 Grand Marquis LS, it has 60,120 miles and seems to have been properly taken care of, but I don't have a service history for it. Any suggestions on things I should look out for or something I should go ahead and take care of now? I'll do the usual oil change, new air filter, check out the spark plugs and belt but aside from that any suggestions would be helpful! Great video btw.
Just take it to the dealership and have them check it out. But if it goes straight, stops straight and accelerates normal I'd just stick to the regular maintenance schedule. The only thing I ran into was the HVAC control unit and the blend door not working right as a result. I had that fixed which cost me $$$ but everything is fine now. Rear shock was blown at 40K miles and the front suspension was shot at 98K miles. I had the fan go out at around 80K miles which also had to be replaced. I am now simply racking up the miles on the old girl till it is time to move on. I am at 101K miles now, I figure I'll get something else between 120-140K (1-2 years from now).
The Dutch Texan i don't think you might remember me (I'm finally uploading videos now, started in 2015). if i wanted to get a car would you recommend the grand marquis or the crown victoria
Both would be a great choice and the engines and transmissions will last forever. Unfortunately other parts do break, and one of the major things to look out for is the HVAC components that reside in the dash. Mine are going out, and fixing it requires the removal of the dash for one of the items. It costs a lot of money to get that done, and I am not about to pull a dash to do it myself. Compressor is fine, but that is the easy one to replace. I got 82k miles on it now and the problems started to become evident at around 50k miles, those are parts that should last the life of the car to be honest. Listen to moaning from the passenger side when shutting the car off. Maybe some creaking. That is a sign those AC parts are about to go out and I wouldn't be surprised if either control would be 1000 bucks to replace at the dealer.
I’m curious, if the car is well maintained. What do you think the average life span of the car would be in terms of mileage, (looking at one with 100k miles. )
You'll need a transmission before an engine. My trans called it quits at 136K miles and I was on top of my maintenance. There are plenty of examples out there with higher mileage driven by older people that don't flog it. I drove like a bat out of hell, but never when it was cold. The trans just couldn't take it.
The Dutch Texan also thank you for responding on an older video so quickly... I’ve got two options I can afford, a 09 crown Vic police interceptor with 75k miles on it, and a 07 grand marquis LS with 101,619 miles on it. The drive to the marquis is 15 minutes, and the drive for crown Vic is 6 hours. Your thoughts?
@@TheCAD66 CVPI's get used hard. I would always go for a civilian car over a CVPI for that reason alone. And the GMQ is 15 minutes away, so I would check it out. And if you don't like it, go look for another that comes for sale nearby. I would never drive 6 hours for a car unless it was one I just had to have regardless of condition.
The Dutch Texan both cars are in great shape, the CVPI looks to be a detectives car, as the back seat is still the cloth (not plastic that police throw in it) and was actually transferred to the city for city use on bank and mail runs by the secretaries of the city. The GMQ was owned by an older couple and used as mainly a retirement trip car to go to and from Houston. 7 hour plus drive. Long story short, they are both nice looking cars and I know nothing about either. And you have earned yourself a subscriber for answering so quickly.
No worries! Glad I could be of some help. Just make sure that the AC control module works perfectly. Go from heat to cold, and switch to each blower setting around. That module has a tendency to not work correctly and it is a pretty penny to get fixed.
TheZombaslaya the Cadillac DTS is a front wheel drive sedan and is only comparible to the Lincoln Town Car (grand marquis more expensive cousin). These two are in the $50,000 range. Grand marquis is better compared to Buick lacrosse, similar pricing and features. My opinion is grand marquis beats Buick.
This body style started model year 2006. It is an option, but due to lower sales and many fleet cars in the later years you will be hard pressed to find a younger grand marquis with fogs. I am unsure you could get them on GS cars, but the provision in the bumper is there to add them later (I don't know what it involved with the install, or if wires are already present, I do know you need at least another headlight switch).
After I watched your video 4years ago, i bought one from an old man. Sold it last and got an Toyota Prius , now I need an second car. I'm searching it now
You forgot the most important difference between the regular 4.6 and the police version. The (P.I.) performance improved heads. They were straight off the 2valve mustang G.T. Heads make the motor.
The engine is exactly the same to the civilian version save for the intake, dual exhaust and tune. All engines in the CV/GMQ/TC and CVPI got performance improved heads in 2001.
I found an '08 Grand Marquis for $7k, I don't know if I should buy it to replace my '03 Celica. Also, is it possible to put a dual-clutch transmission in this car?
+JoshCraver9000 that better be a cream puff for 7k! Low miles and perfect inside out! And I know of no DCT swaps. People have swapped 5 and 6 speed manuals in their cars so I suppose anything could go if you wanted to and have the expertise. Honestly I'd keep the 4 speed auto. It works fine and unless you dump ~10 grand in the car (lt headers, exhaust, trac-loc, supercharger and suspension), it won't be quick at all.
For the low price i'd pay for this Marquii, i'd have it all modified to the extreme. I like it cause i reside in the city n it's not a great attn getter. like a Lincoln or especially a Caddy, n it's safe, strong . These cars will be collector items. "if not already"
It's big, comfortable and has a V8. It's also quicker than the grand marquis and returns similar gas mileage. It just isn't the proven rental/government workhorse that the panther platform is.
The Dutch Texan The caddies have the Northstar engine which have had many problems and cost a fortune to fix when they break down. You might as well gets a new engine.
I no longer have mine unfortunately. The trans gave up the ghost at 135K and repair was just not the smart thing to do. The engine ran like a top though! I hope you can find the right one for you!
Just make sure the HVAC works on all settings and the shocks are good. I haven't had any problems with the transmission or engine. I will hit 100K miles this weekend and she's still going strong!
one of the most honest car reviews I've watched. Love those tanks , comfortable ride , low maintenance cost, great mpg for a V8 and bullet proof. Personally I think it looks even good I don't care if 6 out of 10 people say it's an old men's car. At least old people know what's good for them. Great video !
+Marcus Hoehmann thank you, I am humbled. And yes, I agree with everything you wrote. The drive-train is bulletproof!
Marcus Hoehmann I know you made your comment about this Mercury two years ago but I must admit that I agree with what you wrote. Later for fools who knock this machine as an "old man's car"...this thing IS bulletproof! Peace!
I am getting my grandpa's and it has been given the nickname "The Old Man Mobile."
@@TheDutchTexan does the mgp holds true to what they say?
I just love the Grand Marquis and Crown Victoria
+Carrington Hollister they are great cars for sure!
me too, they both great cars.
I'm sure you'd love Lincoln town cars then!
Seen your video a few times, I've always been a big fan of the Grand Marquis! Many say it's an oldman car, or since I'm Mexican a drug dealers car! I finally decided to buy one, picked it up yesterday! 06 with 49,700 miles tungsten grey! Love it! Great video
+Francisco B thanks for watching it man! And I hope you are having a lot of fun with it!
Damn congratulations!!! what a find!
Thanks. I'm buying one of these soon. I'm an old man. So I want an old man's car. Great video.
There are still plenty of them out there! I keep hoping Ford would bring us another rear wheel drive V8 sedan, but it looks like that is a pipe dream.
Same year! Mine is about to roll over 110K miles. She’s getting up there!
Nice! I still miss mine. Maybe I’ll end up in one again sometime.
I have a 2007 Grand Marquis Silver. It's in great shape and i take super good care of it.
Mine is getting a workout, but she's holding up pretty decent.
4:16 Looks like an old tank? I think it looks great.
Oh yes! I mean tank in a very admiring way.
I think your right
the that gen Chev impala looks like an old tank
My vette gets 9-10 mpg... I wouldn't be complaining about 16 lol
TheCorvetteBenHahaha! But that also has a 454!
$5.00 for a pack of o rings isn't too bad of a fix and a lot of times that is the malfunction .Thanks for the video ,I learned something .As you can see I own a 99 & 06 Merc Marquis for about 1 yr and so far I love them .
mrbakerskatz and the time to do it. And then we have the flapper motor in the dash, which is a dash out procedure pretty much... :(
Just picked up an '08 LS today. Like new condition. Gonna love this one.
Congratulations dude! She'll run forever!
Last week I bought an 07 LS with 145K mi on it for $1500. I can't find a thing wrong with it. Solid as hell and rides like a dream.
I got one of these & love it. They really shine when cruising on the interstate or just simple driving, cushy smooth ride. RWD are so much better in that regard to me.
I love the Grand Marquis and I love the way it lookes as well.
+Ishay Bar-Yosef yup, looks like a real car still!
I am a big fan of keeping things OEM, but aftermarket can work just as well!
Thanks Dutch...
( : D))
It gets the maintenance it needs! And part of the reason why I got it was the bulletproof drive-train!
Well done on that review. Comfort, room, and reliability is where it's at. Great car !!
I loved it and I still miss it sometimes!
I liked the intro :)
And you agreed with my suggestions for improving your reviews.
The Mercury Grand Marquis is a legend in America
Great review. I like all the technical details that you put in about it, like exhaust, throttle body, & axle ratio differences.
Great review ! I had a 2005, and loved it but couldn't drive it in winter. The value on these is outstanding.
With a couple of light modifications, this could be a great first car for my sister and I!
My dad has a 2004 LS model, and I have a 2007 GS model.
i just got mine today a 2007 with 68k miles
Good review. I am glad that you get it, the car was designed for comfort; and, unfortunately, that is hard to find today.
I think the ultra comfortable couch rolling down the road died with the body on frame cars.
You can add a little bit of horsepower by swapping the airbox and airtube also the dual exhaust from the police interceptor
Panthers can be made to handle fairly well but the tradeoff is less ride. Install police struts and coils, front and rear. Install police front sway bar and 21mm rear bar from 1998-2002 HPP optioned cars. You can go a little further with poly bushings and upgraded end links. I would disable VAPS as I prefer linear assist power steering but that is a personal preference thing.
just got a 2004 Marquis Florida edition half leather roof.put new rear shocks and new springs.so far so good
Installing dual exhaust from retired CVPI is good for 15 hp, no tune required.
There is nothing like the ride, that’s for sure!
love the review, i like that you showed what an emergency stop is like in the car, its cool to see
Thanks man! And yeah, the brakes are adequate! You definitely don't want to come in too hot because it won't slow down like my mustang or my wife's focus would!
The sound of the car, is what makes me want one 1:33 and was there a little bit of turbo wine at the end?
It sounds pretty awesome, but I assure you it is completely stock! I had great plans, but as with many of my plans other things got in the way.
It is written in the user's manual . If you get stuck in the sand, switch the traction control off so the power goes for both wheels.
...Still won't turn your open diff in a locker bud... I've been stuck in sand, on ice and anything in between. One wheel peel... all the way.
You forgot to mention that the late models also have a 5 star crash rating from every direction...
They have traction control. A little weight and good tires and it goes great in the snow. Bumper deep.
I just picked one up. 2006. watched your video and i share all the same thoughts as you, i bought mine for the same reason. Just thought i would share.
+Austin McKay great minds think alike! This week it will pass 100K miles!
Braking improves with suspension mods. Problem with stock suspension is nose dive which over works front brakes.
I’m an American importing one of these to the Netherlands. Funny that TH-cam suggested your video!
I love me some Panther cars.
My '07 Grand Marquis is the LS Ultimate Edition, black on black.
I was initially looking for a black on black car but was unable to find one. So I settled on the “Norsea Blue” which I liked too! I still miss it to this day. Such a comfortable boat!
January 2011 last one manufactured.
Clean you engine bay dude!
#DailyDriverStatus :P
Just inherited my Aunts 03 with 57k on it!! Love this car!
Oh man, that’s still a baby! Enjoy it!
but it's still a realy nice and good car.drove 11 years the 1993 model.loved it.
Agreed! I still miss it to this day!
A fantastic review of this vehicle my man. Thumbs up.
Thanks! I still miss it to this day!
worth restoring guys ?
Probably not for resale.
You were right.
Excellent review. Great 👍 Car.
I appreciate it! I still miss it!
im a fan of the fully digital dash, but i notice they're only common in 2001 or 2005 grand marquis, do you know why that is? and is it possible to buy a fully digital dash and install it into a newer grand marquis that doesn't have one?
+Jesse Hargrove I don't think you can get the digi dash in a newer 06< grand marquis. It's cool, but also very very 80's-90's in my opinion. I'd rather keep the regular dash for simplicity. I am sure people have swapped dashboards, but I doubt it was without issue.
It sounded like when you punched it from the stop sign that the rear wheels spun a little. That will hurt your acceleration. Still looked like 0-50 was about 7 seconds. Not bad for a tank. My mom has one same year and color. She's a 78 year old great grandmother. How's that make you feel?
+bbigjohnson069 It makes me feel awesome! It is super comfortable on the long haul.
This indeed has a bench seat and as such can take 6 in a pinch. I have done that myself on some occasions. What a dinosaur! But it works!
The Dutch Texan thank you for the help!
+Clipperdude123 my pleasure!
I'm actually Finna purchase the 2008 model for my birthday..... I already own a 2006 limited addition I love these cars
+Stephen Frierson love their drivetrain, that's for sure!
Wow ,you really know how to treat a fella for his birthday. Happy belated birthday . RoadTrip !!
Just saw your video. Currently looking at buying an '07 grand marquis LS. Thank you for the info.
No problem! Just make sure the ac / heat works on all settings! That's an expensive fix!
That is a sign those AC parts are about to go out and I wouldn't be surprised if either control would be 1000 bucks to replace at the dealer.
ok thank you, this video will help me out a lot if i want to buy one of these cars
Also check out the crown Vic forums on the Internet. They are a wealth of information!
okay thank you
I hated these when they were new but they are growing on me as I get older. They don't make cars like this anymore.
They sure don’t, I am missing mine...
You didn't mention it has 5 stat crash rating!
Having These Cars ls A Blessing 🙏.
I still miss it!
the driveby wire is still on the 03 models. I got a 03 and it has it. I don't know it some came with it and some when to the electronic.
I wish they would keep producing them
The dream would have been one of these with a coyote. The police would have loved it. And so would I!
Screw my Buick LeSabre, I want one of these. The 3.8 has nothing on this engine.. or this platform
What was the first year for the fog lights, are they only on the ls models??
This body style started model year 2006. It is an option, but due to lower sales and many fleet cars in the later years you will be hard pressed to find a younger grand marquis with fogs. I am unsure you could get them on GS cars, but the provision in the bumper is there to add them later (I don't know what it involved with the install, or if wires are already present, I do know you need at least another headlight switch).
Hana you're in Plano!!! And that's going to be my first car !!
+Jordan ross Hammett just make sure you check it top to bottom!
Great Demo ! Thank You !
Not a problem!
After I watched your video 4years ago, i bought one from an old man. Sold it last and got an Toyota Prius , now I need an second car. I'm searching it now
Good luck with the search!
You forgot the most important difference between the regular 4.6 and the police version. The (P.I.) performance improved heads. They were straight off the 2valve mustang G.T. Heads make the motor.
The engine is exactly the same to the civilian version save for the intake, dual exhaust and tune. All engines in the CV/GMQ/TC and CVPI got performance improved heads in 2001.
mgm is definitely a manly car. rear wheel drvie, big engine and big body and this is why i like it
+nash benkard same! And they are body on frame tanks!
Just inherited my grandmothers 2011 grand marquis LS. Gonna love it. Btw great review!
If you take care of her she'll take care of you. I got 130K miles on my Grand Marquis LS and she's running strong!
Oh I plan to. She looks like new. I also have a 2003 crown Vic lx with 48k on it. Still looks new too.
I just bought a 2011 Grand Marquis LS Ultimate Edition with 103k a couple of weeks ago
I hope it serves you well!
@@TheDutchTexan It floats like a boat. I drive it everyday delivering food for Grubhub.
Cost? Currently looking at 09 ultimate 107k
@@garybaugh8302 6900
@@garybaugh8302 I've already put 17k miles on it doing food and grocery deliveries
WHAT HAPPENS IF COULD CHANGE THE Engine like electric motor, the same style what do u think?????
It would lose its soul. But on the same token it would become one of the fastest grand marquis out there (because you would stuff a big motor in it)
@@TheDutchTexan but, much better,
I found an '08 Grand Marquis for $7k, I don't know if I should buy it to replace my '03 Celica.
The Dutch Texan - It costs $7,995 and has 67,379 miles, and it looks to be in mint condition!
The Dutch Texan - Also, how does the stereo sound on these cars? Does it come with tweeters?
For the low price i'd pay for this Marquii, i'd have it all modified to the extreme. I like it cause i reside in the city n it's not a great attn getter. like a Lincoln or especially a Caddy, n it's safe, strong . These cars will be collector items. "if not already"
This car handle great and are very comfortable and do have power
I just thought of something. The Cadillac DTS. What is your take on that vs the Crown Victoria? Both Rear wheel drive V8 cars.
It's big, comfortable and has a V8. It's also quicker than the grand marquis and returns similar gas mileage. It just isn't the proven rental/government workhorse that the panther platform is.
The Dutch Texan I thought it would be a good match up. Not many cars like these anymore.
The Dutch Texan The caddies have the Northstar engine which have had many problems and cost a fortune to fix when they break down. You might as well gets a new engine.
great car i got the 2005 crown vic and i will like to buy the 2011 grand marquis, or the lincoln town car.
Great Video bro, looking at a 2007 , I have a 2003, nice, but I want the leather and heated seats etc, like you just showed me . best of luck THX !!
I no longer have mine unfortunately. The trans gave up the ghost at 135K and repair was just not the smart thing to do. The engine ran like a top though! I hope you can find the right one for you!
I just picked up a silver 2003 LS with 90,000 miles for $1600.
Wish me luck.
Great review! I've been considering buying one of these and you just made up my mind!
Just make sure the HVAC works on all settings and the shocks are good. I haven't had any problems with the transmission or engine. I will hit 100K miles this weekend and she's still going strong!
