I don't know why some people are having a go at the mum. She recognised she was struggling, she accessed help, implemented the techniques and got the results with her son so that things could get better for their family. Can't say fairer than that. No one's perfect, we all need help sometimes. Brave of her to reach out for it.

Perhaps because of how far she let it go before she asked fore help. Because he hasn’t had consequences he thinks its a game. You can see the smile on his face. He laughs. When she says, “So much to take in”, all Jo told her to do was take away a privilege. Just one. She has done her son and herself a huge favor by holding the line. Good mom!!
Look at everything she went through to get him to do what she said. A fight to go to bed. A fight period for everything. Not in my lifetime. He had her crying. Not in my house. I’d nipped that in one session. If he fight her and get away with it, he will fight his way right in to prison. Never happen on my watch.
I love how the little girl is so unproblematic.

The most important advice my mother ever gave me was when I brought my newborn first child home from the hospital. After gushing over my baby’s beauty and health, Mom looked me straight in the eye and said “NEVER allow this child’s will to be stronger than yours, or you will lose control of your home.” I followed that advice from that day on raising our 3 kids, and each of them has thanked their Dad and me for the love and training we gave them. They are now 34, 33, and 31. Thanks, Mom!!!

I have 3 boys, 17, 5, and 2.. my 17 year old I had strong mental health etc and I didn’t struggle mentally when he was young.. but when I had my 5 year old I had a really bad year, and basically had a mental breakdown. I was unable to properly handle him, with discipline etc. and I’m currently trying to undue the mistakes I made with him. He’s not as bad as this boy, but it’s a struggle with him for sure. It’s crazy bc when I had my oldest son and I was a strong parent, I always judged kids and parents who couldn’t do what was necessary. But now I realize, sometimes moms just need support.

My mother was not really too strict, bat my father had only to look at me whith his angry eye,to stand still like a soldier on presenting arms on parade.......that was 65-70 years ago......all parents were strict at that time. No harm done,we came out just right, the lot of us,siblings, cousins,school-mates,all the same.

So true, they touched on something similar in my Circle of Security course. As a parent, you need to be Bigger, Stronger, Kind. If you are only Bigger, Stronger without the Kind, you become mean. Kind without the Bigger, Stronger, you become a pushover. Parenting is about finding a balance of all three.

He even tries to take advantage of me by finding my weakness. He 13 and I’m 17. I honesty can’t wait till I go to college

Jo is so precious 😭 she looked so worried when the mom said she’s lost in the evenings and when she realized the mom meant she has free time her face just brightened up, she really seems to genuinely care about the families she visits and I love it ❤️

These mothers need to start being parents and not friends to their kids.
Marina D Lol, I was never a friend to my children, nor did I hit them. Discipline is learned by respect and it begins with parents respecting their children. Far too many adults believe they are entitled to belittle, bully and make fun of their children, then of course as the children grow they realize what losers their parents are and have zero respect for them, teachers, authority... Eventually, most survive it though they are not better off for having experienced such treatment. Mental health issues in this country have been exasperated by abuse. Depression, substance abuse and low self esteem are often born out of such experiences.
Hitting children is a worn out concept. Educate yourself if you don’t know how to treat infants and children. No excuses anymore, all of the information is available to anyone who cares to learn.

I have 1 son and 4 daughters aged between 26 and 36. I adore my children and we have an amazing relationship. We have a lot of fun, joking, banter, laughing etc. However there is a line. I am their Mum not their friend. They are all very respectful towards myself and their Dad but "The Look" from me notifies them of crossing that line. That rarely happens but they know when to back down. Love my kids so much ❤
You should instead say they should first understand their children before changing their bad habits
The best parenting advice I ever got was from my college boyfriend’s mother. She always said “I’m not their friend I’m their mother. They have plenty of friends but only one mother.” My mother was very young when she had me and was a single mother and she over shared with me, tried to be my friend and often relied on me to be the responsible one because she “never got to grow up because of me.” She often said that I raised her, which really isn’t funny. I swore to do it differently with mine and I did. It’s not like we never had fun together, because we did, but I never blurred those lines. Now, they’re all respectful, successful adults that were crazy proud of.
Sure it may be due to the mother's inconsistent parenting, but look how much she wanted to change.
She knew it was her, and she wanted help, and by the gods she FOLLOWED THROUGH.
She really loves her children, and she was probably not surrounded by parents or friends who could help her.
Her tears of joy when she was successful warms my heart.
Jack needed consistent reinforced discipline. As a parent you have to say what you mean & mean what you say, that's how you maintain control. Dealing with Jack was exhaustive.

My Mum and Dad hardly hit or raised their voice at me or my Brother when we were younger. I don’t know how some kids turn out like this. I’m 13 and personally I think i’m really mature and always have been. It boggles my mind how different kids can be with the same amount of punishment.

This generation of adults are too emotional and wishy washy and think that they are their child's friends. They push boundaries for you to create stronger ones. It's unfair for these kids to have mothers who don't create stability and give them structure.
They were raised by divorced parents who couldn't get their own lives together enough to raise them. It kinda makes sense((I'm not giving them excuses)) but my only real good parent friends are the ones who came from good homes.

That is because they didn't wait until you were six to instill a healthy respect for their role in the family! If you had been allowed to get tons of attention for bad behavior until you were six years old, it would have taken a lot more than the look to get you back under control!

I feel bad for the mom being alone . Where is the dad? It never mentions that. Very sweet lady. Glad Jo helped her. I’ve worked with kids for 25 years and raised 5 of my own. You have to gain consistent control when they are young and demand respect or they will walk all over you. Loving discipline makes kids feel secure and safe. They really are wanting the parent to parent them and not the other way around.

I don't know her personally, but I met a mother whose son was hitting her. He did it in front of me and I went off on him and explained why he shouldn't hit his mom. A short while later, the mom came running to me to tell me the dad had hit her. I called the cops. She ended up being upset with me.
I do think for some kids, this kind of behavior is learned.

My parents raised 10 of us. My Dad hit me twice in my life for deliberately disobeying a direct rule. He rarely hit any of us but we knew the option was there if we went too far. To the day Dad died at 88yrs, he was still the Boss. He just had to look at you and he always gave one warning. Mom never touched us. All she had to say was "I'll tell your Dad" and we did what we were told. They were united in what was expected of us and with 7 boys and 3 girls they had their hands full but we all loved and respected our Parents. They instilled a strong work ethic right from the start and you were expected to become a productive member of society, yet we always knew we would be welcomed home if we needed a break. I miss my parents every day. My siblings and I often talk about Mom and Dad and funny stuff that happened in the family over the years. It was only when I started work in a big city and heard colleagues talk about their Parents and families that I fully appreciated how lucky we were with the parents we had and the family they nurtured and raised.
i think we lived in the same period, i put this upbringing as the reason for my success in life, it made me strong and it instilled values in me i never lost.
My Dad warned my brother and I to stop hitting and fighting each other or he’d be cracking some heads. We didn’t stop. Two seconds later we were bawling on the floor holding our heads - he’d cracked our heads together and left us crying in a heap on the floor. We felt all bad for ourselves. We even consoled each other! Never did that again.
Absolutely, smacking isn’t the best option ever like if it’s avoidable don’t do it. When I was a kid I got smacked three times only when I did something reallyyyyy bad and I never did it again. I remember each time so well😂 and that was effective. When people do it too much it’s not effective
I was never smacked as a child and I would like to think I'm a good person but my sister definitely is a good person so it goes to show that hitting is not always necessary in some situations.
