WHY Honda Is Now Less Reliable Than BMW (Really!)

  • It doesn't make sense to say it out loud, even after I've done all the research and after I've looked at these two car brands (Honda and BMW) and their reliability.
The fact is though, BMW reliability is in a very different place then it was just a few years ago and I'm seeing big changes going on still. Honda reliability is different too, and I'm going to show you why these two are much closer when we ask about things like worth, reliability, and I'm sure at some level car depreciation.

I have an Aunt wth a 2019 Honda Accord and an Aunt with a CRV and both CVT transmissions have been rock solid. Still you must service a CVT more often than anything else. I recommend CVT owners to service every 25k-30k because I have seen how bad the fluid gets in just 20k miles. You might be ok with 40-45k but I would not risk it if I were a CVT owner. I can say my cousin's Nissan Maxima has 245k on the original CVT and he has serviced it every 30k miles. He does it himself because its cheap and not hard to do. Even if you take it to the dealer and pay the $200-$250 service fee every 30k miles it is cheaper than replacing the transmission and the hassles of not having your car during replacement or being stranded and paying for towing fees etc. Just service them often and you will be fine with them.

Most people will not make the time to do it that soon so 30k is better than no service. Any farther you risk failure and will shell out money for a Tow Truck and pay 5-6 thousand dollars for a new transmission. For Nissan and Subaru especially! Honda and Toyota have better CVT's, but I would not risk it even for them. Service it now and save yourself head ache later. For traditional Automatics 40k-50k is acceptible, but the sooner the better.

I bought 2 2015 Civics brand new. They both have CVTs. I love them. Absolutely love them. For the limited hp of the car, the CVTs make up the difference. The MPGs are ridiculously low. And the cruise is fantastic in the Tennessee hills. My automatics never had the power and smoothness of the CVTs in 4 cylinders. The V6's could start to stall as well, but the CVT just powers through. I have learned to take them to the dealer for oil replacement as it doesn't work the same as a multi-speed transmission. They only have 80k on them, but after 7 years, we have decided to bite the bullet and run them in to the 6 digits. I guess we will see. A new CVT is still thousands less than a replacement used Honda. Still, though, I never thought I would enjoy a car as much as I do, but this Civic has done marvelously. The Plymouth Neon competed, but the Civic's CVT just outclasses the best the 2 Liter / Auto from Mopar (however, the Neon at 70 mph was unstoppable, but the Civic will run any speed)

It's not about making cars reliable anymore, it's about control, companies purposely screw you over into making their cars as comfortable and unreliable as possible so you would have no choice but to pay for another car much sooner, but I find that marketing tactic stupid because in that situation, you're just wasting materials, and the fact you're selling it for a price of 35K for a base model, it's just ridiculous! The amount of features these cars get is just unnecessary, and also the fact that consumers buy these just blows my mind. It's about status, apparently the more expensive your car is, the better your outlook on others. (Which is false because it just shows that you got scammed into a horrible deal and you look like an idiot for not doing your research on the car, and a douchebag for not taking care of it.)

@@cckiller0053 I 100% agree with you. Glad that I got out of paying over $800/month (including insurance) for a brand new car. I put an order for a 2022 pearl white civic sport last year. Had to wait 3 months but the dealer didn't guarantee that I'll get the car even after waiting that long. So without options I waited for a few weeks figuring out what to do. I contacted my friends, co-workers about what should I do. They told me to cancel the order and get something used which is what I did. Couple more weeks later after cancelling the car, I went to my local used car dealer and outright bought a 05 Accord V6 for around $5500 which tbh was expensive but I needed a car asap so I went with it. Now I pay only the insurance every month. The money that I saved in the process will go towards repairs and maintenance. NGL I felt terrible after cancelling the new civic. I test drove it and it was fantastic. But not paying $800/month is what gives the peace of mind when I have to pay my other bills

My comment is regarding new vehicles. I currently own and drive 3 vehicles. 2019 Lexus GX 460, 2021 BMW X3 2.0t, 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Both the Lexus and Toyota is built in Japan and the build quality is really good. The BMW X3 is built in USA and so far no issues with all my vehicles. I've got a 2018 CRv 1.5 turbo in a temperate climate (Melbourne Australia), and it dilutes like crazy. My last oil analysis was 9% by volume of petrol in the oil. The big problem with the engine is it takes a long time to warm to normal operating temperature and when shut down, the engine cools rapidly. Plus there is heaps of room around the engine in the CRv which means keeping it at operating temps in super cold climates and providing engine warmth to the cabin is problematic (If the Nth American AC software update done). It's a flawed design IMHO.

I have owned a 96, 97, 98, 89, 99 and a 2012 civic. The current one is the 2012 I bought new. I have had to replace the breather tube between the air filter box and the throttle body, the window sills on the outside of the window, the clear coat paint has come off the car and the ECU that controls the steering. The electronic steering failure has become common across most of the honda brand. There are lots of reports of this problem. There is no backup system in place when the electric steering quits(unlike a fluid steering system). Hard to steer at any speed, extremely dangerous! The dealer wanted $3,600 just to start to fix it. That is after I had figured the parts that needed replaced. I was fortunate that could figure it out ant repe it myself. Still was about, $1000 when I was done. I also own a 1994 acura integra gs-r, one owner before me, I still consider it more reliable than the 2012. I will not be buying another honda from 2012 and up. Oil dilution issues with Hondas are due to the direct injection system not atomizing/measuring fuel correctly under cold operation conditions. Toyota and other manufactures like Ford are starting to use dual injection systems. They utilize direct injection for high output warm engine conditions and then also use port injection for low speed operation and cold conditions. This atomizes/measures the fuel much better for various engine operating conditions. It also keeps intake valves clean from carbon buildup. It’s time for manufactures like Honda and GM to spend the money and to do it right and add dual injection systems

My year 2000 Integra Type-R is still going strong with zero engine or transmission issues. The only part i have to replace a few times is the car battery. But it was my bad, as i went on vacation and didn't put the battery on charger. I have since put it on solar charger and the battery has no issue since. I didn't put a supercharge nor turbo as i prefer to keep it reliable. I did put in Electric Water Pump EWP. It is the best mod in hindsight. Not only it keeps the engine running cool, the Removal of the parasitic drag on the drive train works exceptionally well with the high reving engine. Tons of pulling power and gets even better as the rpm increases. The parasitic drag from the fins within a water pump increases exponentially with increase of rpm. Without this drag, the Type R engine revs without being held back, it is way more responsive than the factory unit. Highly recommended upgrade. 😉👌

I used to be a Honda shill. Owned 9, but I won't touch one now. I remember always wanting a turbocharged model from the factory, but what we got and what I imagined are 2 completely different things. These L15s are trash, and the reason I got a corolla.

your ire is a little unjustified. The RDX had a turbo over 15 years ago. The 2.0T is a great engine. The 1.5 is so-so to be honest. I enjoy its pep but its very vibraty unlike previous K motors

@@jamesmedina2062 honda should've stuck with their Supreme NA engine building prowess. They are out of their element with these turbos. I'd say that all their NA engines of yesteryear were their best ever and the reason so many customers stuck with them. At least that's why i did. These new engines have no soul, and Honda is losing their identity.

@@SuperSmoovy I can't argue with that. NA engines can simply breath easier and if built to rev can then rev higher than this turbo stuff. The revving ties into their motorcycle heritage and lightweight valvetrain. What I hate is that port injection was simple and could get good economy while the DI stuff requires a different type of flow(tumble flow). You can build a 1.5 to take massive boost along with fuel but again, its not going to flow well and rev as quickly as a k20
