Does a Toyota Last Longer Than a Honda?

  • It's Toyota vs Honda reliability! Both of these car brands have a great record when it comes to vehicle reliability, but from my perspective both companies have taken a bit of a step back when we talk about:
    - Car ownership costs
    - Maintenance requirements
    - Car reliability
Plus you'll get a cold start on a few cars from Honda and Toyota.

Fact check: back in days, owned 1990 Honda Civic Hatchback, bought already w/ 200K miles on ODO, drove another 250K miles, meanwhile replaced twice timing belt and water pump, along with basic tune up, sold w 450K miles on ODO, I'm sure it's still not in junk yard yet and the new owner still enjoying it... @@Shadobanned4life @Chad O'Ban Forgot to mention, my Civic didn't have power steering, no ABS, no fuel injector - it was w/ carburetor, front rotors and rear was on drums, I sure did replaced parts here and there within my ownership as it wares out, just short list: valve gasket, rotor and pads, radiator hoses, but this car never broke down on me, I never had to take it to mechanic for something that needed to be fixed, always had best brand oils in it, both engine and in manual transmission. Like Japanese cars - Toyota Corolla Hatchback, Mazda 3 hatch, Subaru Impreza but when I will have a chance to buy an actual brand new car, I sure go for Honda, it's my own personal preference as my very first beloved car was - the Civic... 🙂✌️

      I had a 1985 accord 5 speed cable clutch bought with 350k miles for $400 in 2013
      Cars body was flawless
I drove it 240k miles more
Til the timing belt snapped on me. And it was going to cost crazy $ to fix. Cuz it also needed a catalytic converter.
I had 600 k miles on the ODO
During the time of ownership while I replaced the brakes, the exhaust and one Cadillac converter tires and oil change, regular maintenance stuff.
The only downside which really isn’t a downside, but it was that about every two years I would have to have the exhaust patched or replaced..

No doubt this is largely because governments are forcing manufacturers to be more efficient and green every year. Toyota and Honda are no angels either, they have joined up with the big western car companies, spending millions fighting against "right to repair" laws which would stop manufacturers having a monopoly on repairs and open up the repair industry to third parties more, which would reduce repair costs.

This is very hard because each brand has certain models which may be more reliable than others. Among those models, there will be specific years which they are more reliable than the rest, as you mentioned. Also, my dealer serviced 2015 sienna suffered from the timing chain cover leak as well as the transmission cooler issue which are 2 notorius issues for this V6 engine. Of course I had a 2008 scion xb with the excessive oil consumption engine and 1990 4Runner with oil sludge recall, aha! My point is, Toyota generally is very reliable brand and they stay behind their products. However, I have noticed the new Tundra, Highlander and Crown with hybrid turbocharged engines so I expect their reliability will get knocked down in the near future. Why do manufacturers have to go with smaller displacement engine with turbo? EPA and politics? You tell me :-)

People want reliability too at least while they still own the car but durability isn't important anymore because they're going to trade it in soon on the next fun model.

I've owned both. In my experience Toyota has some weak links in some engines (they ONLY get 200k before they start burning oil) whereas their v-engines are amazingly reliable. Toyota's real strength is in their transmissions. I've seen Toyota master service technicians who said, in 20 years, they've only changed oil on transmission and have never seen one in the shop for mechanical failure. The way Toyota planned their lineup explains a lot: they added a ton of hybrids so they could meet their fuel standards, and then just put v-6's and v-8's that aren't great on gas mileage, but excel at reliability, in their best-selling SUV's and trucks. Ford and GM are trying to hit their fuel standards by more and more hi-tech engines that are more and more complex, that tend to be less reliable.

@@huyvo1586 definitely not! I work in service at a Honda dealer, we DO NOT have problems with the CVTs. Nissan has the trash cvts you probably hear a lot about.
We actually have more problems out of the automatic transmissions in Pilots. Civics are essentially bulletproof, they will need AC work at some point yes but other than that extremely mechanically solid. We do not have issues out of new civics, even the turbos on the 1.5t hatchbacks don’t seem to go out; Can’t say the same for the accords unfortunately :(
You’ve got yourself a great car, just take care of it and it’ll go 300k miles. Be prepared for ac repairs though at some point and if you take any slightly major frontal impacts make sure to get your cooling fans + radiator checked as the condenser will be pushed and rub against the radiator. I've had to replace 3 of 4 wheel bearings and I rebuilt the starter. None of these repairs were particularly expensive using OEM parts. Ok, replacing the front wheel bearing was a bit more difficult than it should've been but whatever, I have a friend with a press. My 16 Camry V6 has been a pain in the ass by comparison. After Toyota replaced both muffler heat shields for wallowing out and falling off I fabricated a new set out of .90" aluminum since it's out of warranty. I've had this car as my daily driver for 20... yes you read that correctly... TWENTY years now (purchased it new in October 2002)! It has a 6-speed manual. The car still has the original chains on it as well! No transmission problems whatsoever, and only a failed cooling fan, valve cover gasket, and some MAF sensors. Other than yearly synthetic oil changes (and filter), it's cost me next to nothing to maintain! It doesn't even burn oil between yearly changes... the oil level stays the same.... amazing! Total mechanical issues over the 2 decades probably cost me about $1700 to fix! It only takes Premium Unleaded though, and I think the Shell Premium I use has helped keep the engine and valves in great shape. Without a doubt, the 2.8L, 24v VR6 is VW's most reliable engine ever built! Frankly, i'm pleasantly surprised!

I once owned a used 1999 Saturn SL1 for nearly 10 years, only issues were a valve gasket early in ownership and then a radiotor near end of ownership. Solid in between those issues. After that I bought a used 2006 Kia Spectra that right after purchase it ended up melting part of an electrical harnest. I only owned the Kia for a few months and ended up spending $1800 to fix, but was solid for 5 years after that. Next in 2019, I bought a used 2010 Scion Xb. I had alignment issues at the get-go that took a little $ to sort out, but I attribute that to the previous owner having oversized wheels/tires (that I replaced with an OEM set up) and their lack of maintenance to fix it. Since then I had an emissions code that a new gas cap fixed and most recently an alternator go out. Granted all my cars have been used but every car is going to have faults. I just try to buy simple vehicles with as few electical do-dads and complex whachyamacallits that I can.

2018-2020 Accords are definitely a problematic generation of the accord unfortunately. Specifically fuel injectors. Honda in general has issues with fuel injectors in recent years but we cover replacement of those under a warranty extension once you get the code for it on the Pilots and Ridgelines thankfully but not the accords, so once you get that dreaded catalyst + misfire code and you don’t have extended warranty you will be paying $1200-1400 out of pocket for fuel injector job. Also turbos go out on accords of those years if not very carefully taken care of usually between 100-150k miles

We have owned many Toyotas and they have always proven to be reliable with very few issues. We owned a V6 Honda Accord that had about 60,000 miles on it when one cylinder started to misfire. Said to pull over immediately and we did; had it towed to a dealer who charged $200 to diagnose and replace ONE spark plug which is identical to what happened to a friend of ours in another state. The Accord transmission was also not something to jump up and down about so No More Hondas.

    • @shaunkennedy174
      @shaunkennedy174 ปีที่แล้ว

Thats a very solid opinion actually! I write service here at a Honda dealer and All Hondas will need valve cover gasket, spool valve, VTC screen or much much worse… rear main seal replacement at around 100k miles. That rear main seal is such a costly labor intensive job though I would honestly just ride with it and keep a check on oil level. Valve cover gasket and spool valve are fairly simple tho especially valve cover.
I never worked for Toyota but I imagine they don’t need those gaskets and seals replaced nearly as often?

Have a 2020 Sienna Limited Premium V6 that has had 2 low pressure fuel pumps replaced in less than 25K miles, power 3rd row seats that repeatedly failed from day one, along with a rattle in the cargo area that can't be found. Timing belt service will cost you $700-1500. Wouldn’t be my first choice. My 2007 Pilot had 215k miles when I sold it few weeks ago. I work for a 100 car fleet taxi company, 16 years ago the fleet was dominated by domestic cars (Malibus, Impalas, Taurus, Caravans, etc), but it was quickly changing to Toyota and Honda. These days, they are using a lot of Kias and Hyundais , which aren't great but still much better than any of the domestic vehicles. Maintenance costs are 50% lower across the board on imports vs. domestics. The domestic cars (especially Malibu), are notoriously unreliable and horrifically uncomfortable. One thing we are noticing is the difference between 9th and 10th gen Civics, the 10th gen transmissions really can't hold up in the taxi business. The Toyotas are certainly the most reliable.

Engine is a 2.4L i-Vtech using 5W30 GTS Motor Oil. Engine has been rebuilt only once due to previous owner using incorrect fuel grade and recently replaced starter engine. Been driving it since 2015 and its gone from around 115k to over 185k on the ODO and the only parts ive had replaced are the 12V battery and spark plugs. I could mention brake pads, tires, plus oil changes but I consider those to be normal maintenance. Valves are definitely noisy now and need a tune up and it has bad transmission mounts so it vibrates some while driving but it still starts right up, drives strong and gets 35MPG in the city to this day.
