It's still heartbreaking to watch this some 41 years later. Never could have thought he wouldn't live to race that 82 supermodified classic and that he be gone just days after this interview. One of the most tragic losses in all Motorsports. Right up there with Jim Clark. Jim Shampine was both the Colin Chapman AND Jim Clark of short track racing.

Makes you wonder if it played a role in his tragic death

If you mean the the slanted seat no he died in the modified race not the supermodified race.

@@bobtoler5322 Yes sorry, I thought the slanted seat was in both. But if I recall the modified was not even his car? I was 8 years old, lined up for food when the accident happened. I was too young to understand but I remember people crying.

@@jerrygarcia2645 Jimmy was driving Billy Taylor's #99, which was normally driven by Geoff Bodine. Geoff had a Winston Cup commitment that weekend, so the ride was offered to Jimmy.

@@jerrygarcia2645 I was also 8 years old at that race and I remember my aunt being very upset. My uncle used to race with him until my aunt forced him into retirement after breaking his back flipping over a wall.
