    You are the second travel vlogger who almost got sexually assaulted in India. The other girl stayed in her room without eating for 3 days because the 3 employees at the cheap hotel she was staying at was right outside her room. She only escaped on the third day at 3AM in the morning with a taxi waiting for her when she got out. Rule of thumb in India when choosing a place to stay - choose a 3 to 5 star hotel where there are a lot of international travelers staying there.

    Can so relate to your bus experience in Egypt Alina. Sitting with a Russian / American female friend of mine at the time. We were Travelling from Sham El Sheck out into the Sinai Peninsula when this local young guy took a fancy to my friend and pestered her about wanting to marry her until I had to interveine. A risk doing that in such a place but I must admit the military checkpoints are entertaining. Dont you love the concrete box on a post with the armed soldier standing in it? I saw one fast asleep draped over the windowsill at one. So right about transit visas. Alot of people just dont think of the need for them. Sorry you had such a bad experience with that in the US my little mate. As always a great Vlog.

Anyways, it will be interesting to see your perspective after you visit here again. I mean, seriously 19 is just too young for solo trip in 'unconventional' places in India (Delhi to Gaya in train arriving at 3 am, a decade back ! Hello !). Also, those pins on map are dope !

    1. Not budgeting enough
    2. Not writing address in local language
    3. Not reading reviews
    4. Dying your hair
    5. Paying too much for accommodation
    6. Being dangerously cheap (Not spending enough)
    7. Not knowing your arrival time (transit arrival time)
    8. Not checking if you need a transit visa
    Edit: I make my own mistakes; everybody does. ;-)

    This video was very informative and very funny when the hashtags popped up on the screen. I always say that experience of travels may it be bad or good will always help you out in the future. Personally, I have stayed at hostels, hotels, and apartments and I have had good experiences when it comes to accommodations. Visas is always something I checkout information about especially when I never visited a country before and luckily I never had any problems arise.

    Hi Alina, I also made some mistakes like yours; but don't you think those stories makes life more interesting and become centres of conversations. My buddies and I laughed a lot at the mistakes we made back when we were in high school travelling across Europe. You are an interesting person because of those experiences and it has enriched you as a person. I know so many people who have never and would never travel to another country. I also know many people who would only eat McDonald when they are overseas. I pity these people. As we say in Australia, Good on You Mate for all the mistakes you made! Thanks for sharing your story.

    My #1 travel mistake is packing too much. Not only is it terrible to carry an unnecessarily heavy suitcase but you'll also regret not leaving room in your bags in case you buy stuff in the country you visited (and trust me, you will). Jackets and shoes are bulky so don't pack too many of them. I've never experienced any of the mistakes Alina mentioned, although all of them are great to be watchful for.
    Alina, curious question: How come you weren't a Canadian citizen at age 17 yet? Did you just wait too long to apply for your cdn citizenship? You were 5 when you came from the Ukraine, weren't you?

    • @AlinaMcleod

    I made lots of mistakes in my travels too but I got better.
    Definitely do your research!
    I am so sorry about what happened to your hair, I would think anyone would know how to deal with European hair.
    I have a slightly Afro hair texture and I either do it all myself or I am very selective with who does my hair and luckily I never had any problems.
    I have stayed in private accommodation in Croatia because hotels there are expensive and it was great and it’s a common practice there.
    If you are under 12 years old you can travel and study visa free to most countries sometimes children slightly older get away with it specially on school trips where you cross the border by bus or boat because I’ve see this and I found it uncomfortable to see luckily I have not seen a child being detained.
    My sister went to Vietnam without a visa, we hold Portuguese passports which is currently the 4th best passport in the world, her boyfriend is a UK citizens and he was lucky because he enter by air and proved he would leave Vietnam by air if he had no plane ticket to leave then he would need one what happened was because of the EU we assumed we didn’t need to!!
    Well, Portugueses citizens do need Visas to Vietnam and she was interviewed, she’s also a Lawyer and they got easier with her and granted her a visa but unfortunately to the Taiwanese person that was sitting next to her they denied entry for no valid reason and when she tried to help they didn’t listen to my sister.
    Oh, before I went to Transnitria a Moldovan boy said to that area is “dangerous” and I shiting myself after having everything booked luckily he was talking BS and when I came back to London, I confronted him and he said surprised that it was so quiet.

    Most suitcases have small wheels, but get one with BIG wheels, so you can easily pull it 1 mile or more to your hotel. Sightsee as you walk. BIG wheels can also go over cobble stones. Never drop-roll off sidewalk curbs onto the street. These drops from just a few inches, over & over, will start a small invisible crack in your wheel(s), which will eventually break the whole wheel.
    Note: non-Western countries still repair things, rather than just throwing them away, so you could find some person to put on a new wheel.

    Omg haha I did the same with the addresses, as an Australian I just assumed writing it down in English would be enough, but that was not the case, I’m going to Japan in October, I’ll definitely write down my address in Japanese now 😂
    Also when I travelled to Brazil I needed to get my bangs trimmed as they were growing out, I went to the Salon and the hair dresser just took me to their front desk where no mirrors were, grabbed some paper cutting scissors and did a blunt one attempt cut! Surprisingly my bangs actually looked okay, but my god it was scary.

    Damn. 😂 At least you learned from your mistakes. Some people are incredibly naiive. It's funny about reviews, IDK if I just have weird luck, but 90% of the time, a place turns out to be the complete opposite of how others described it. But it's not always worst. 😂 I also think I notice different things because I tend to get off the tourist path more and spend more time in a place.
    That being said, I don't believe that "broadening your horizons" means broadening them to just the good things.
    The Egypt thing sounds scary and very strange indeed. I personally never travel in a country like that without a tour, even though they're often poorly organized.
    But safety and hygiene are the two most important criteria for me when looking into a destination. I certainly wouldn't go to a third world country by myself, especially as a first solo trip.
    I didn't know you were Ukrainian. That Visa things sounds so fishy to me. Countries usually do not require a Visa if you are not leaving the airport.

    Alina, about the transit visa, were you merely changing planes in the US? Was your US arrival airport and your US departure airport, the same airport? If so, since you didn't have to leave the international arrivals building in the airport, why would you have to go thru US passport control (wouldn't have to enter the US), you could just get off your plane from Canada in the US airport, & board your plane for another country, without needing any transit visa?

    • @AlinaMcleod
      @AlinaMcleod  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup that's how we expected it to be, but they told us otherwise. Our flight was leaving in literally 2hrs from the time we arrived and they kept us in immigration saying that I couldn't be in the airport and I'd have to return back to Canada. Absolutely ridiculous.

    • @jameshannum7270
      @jameshannum7270 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlinaMcleod If you couldn't be in the airport, that only means that you have to leave the airport, and not by foot or train, but by plane. So it shouldn't have made any difference which plane you left by!
      Also immigration should have instructed all the airlines not to fly in passengers from certain countries. Then you wouldn't have wasted your time & money flying there! Then the airline wouldn't have sold you the ticket.

    @Alina : PLEASE, in future, go to a travel agent. They will arrange EVERYTHING for you - hotels, tours to various sites in the country that you are visiting etc. It's fun to travel with fellow travelers but travel agents can arrange private tours as well. They give you a PRINTED ITINERARY of your tour. Travel agents make sure the tour company you travel with and the hotels you stay at are clean and respectable. They do the work for you. I personally will only stay in a five star or four star hotels when travelling to a Third World country. I see that you live in Toronto as I do so if you are interested I will give you the name of my travel agent - Angie. To be sure some travel agents are MUCH better than others and the one I use is outstanding and excellent.

    Living in Bursa, Turkey, with a Turkish Work Permit and tax residency for more than 184 days per year, by incorporating your own company doing business across borders; and together this is a path to Turkish citizenship; yet the corporate participation exemption for dividends is a sufficient aid for structuring a corporate network (FCC RULES are 10% per cent minimum tax across country borders)! MILITARY service in Turkey may be bought off the conscription requirements! Later operations are the path to Portuguese citizenship! / / \ \ MULTIPLE citizenships are a strong strategy to diversify geographic risks! / / \ \ Keep up the great work!

    Reading reviews is not the best advise. I always have unpleasant experiences with places that had good reviews and vice versa. Sometime there are indeed relevant reviews, but they are hidden so deep under the cool reviews that it's impossible to detect them...

    Yes, you’re right. USA demands a full visa to step in a international airport. Many people even today they don’t realize about that. It’s ridiculous that they DON’T allow a free transit. Some European countries are more civilize and they allow free transit inside their international airport. It’s a pity that your dad spent more money for something that should be a right. You should visit Peru again.

    • @AlinaMcleod

      Totally agree. Unless someone is an obvious risk I really don't understand that judgement whatsoever. And I would love to visit Peru again, so much to see and didn't get to do the Amazon last time.

    There are plenty of them. Saving money by staying miles away from the city center is it worth the extra time and money you will spend on travel? While eating out go few blocks away from the tourist area. Find out how expensive a country is before you go otherwise you might go over budget or scrimp to save and end up not having much fun.

    Why did it take u so long to get a Canadian passport? I thought u grew up in Canada at age 4? I think traveling alone is very dangerous for a woman in certain places. Even as a guy, I wouldn't recommend certain places that are rather poor. If you think even you would rob you in this situation... then that's a bad situation.

    Random question: how do you keep your teeth so white? 😊❤️

    • @AlinaMcleod
      @AlinaMcleod  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Great question! I have been a user of Crest Whitestrips for probably over a decade and while they can make your teeth very sensitive temporarily, I haven't found anything that gives you that good of a result for the price. I usually use one box a year and do a strip every 3 days so it's not as intense on the teeth. Inbetween Crest Whitening toothpaste :)

    • @ali_plz
      @ali_plz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alina Mcleod thanks for a quick reply! Yeah, I have used those strips before but haven’t really been consistent with them. I did start using them again yesterday though, but I have been using Crest toothpaste for years. 😊 It’s the best one in my opinion. Love your videos as always!

      @@AlinaMcleod Swish coconut oil for a few minutes every night. Not only a natural teeth whitener, but also very good for your gums. It is an anti-bacterial that pulls toxins out of your gums while you swish. Those strips may be harming your enamel long term. I've been doing it for 2 years and my teeth stay white.
