Fujifilm X-Pro3 - Review

  • Just days before the official release of the new Fujifilm X-Pro3, I managed to get my Friends at Fujifilm Malaysia to send me a sample camera. It was a preproduction. I say this because it had some very beta firmware in it, making it impossible to test out many of the new features. But the real buzz about this camera isn't the latest software or new features like HDR and even the new film simulation, it is about the new design of the camera. The new LDC display or lack of it - so to speak. It features a controversial hidden display. In this video, only hours after I received the camera, I took it for a spin. Special thanks for Fujifilm Malaysia for the loan of the camera.

    Nice!!!!
    Man, I’d love to pick your brain on the following…
    I’m having a hard time with deciding on a new Fuji body, struggling with GAS, but also feeling like I want a new and/or third body.
    Right now I’m shooting on an XT3 and an X100V. Love both. I shoot studio portraits and headshots, personal branding photos and the occasional family session. I used to shoot engagements and weddings, but now it’s almost entirely portrait work.
    I have fallen in love with the rangefinder style of the X100V, and I am eyeing the XPRO 3.
    I’m having a hard time deciding if I should sell my XT3, and get an XPRO 3, keep the XT3 and get an XE4, or just wait and save for the XPRO3 and have three cameras (XT3, XPRO & X100).
    I’ve also considered the XT4, but I don’t do video, don’t care about IBIS and I just don’t see the upgrade.
    I like to work very minimalist, and I only have a handful of lenses.
    I would love your thoughts as to what you would do in my shoes.
    I think I’m also feeling kind of burnt out and bored and there’s something about the x100 that just makes me want to shoot more, which is why I’m leaning towards the rangefinder minimalism found in the XE4 and XPRO series. I want the camera to get out of my way, and my work is about connection, simplicity and closeness. Even in the studio, I keep one eye open. I am finding myself shooting in studio with the X100! Would you sell the XT3 and get the XPRO, keep it and go XE4, or just wait and save and get the XPRO as a third?
    I think there is some piece of me that’s just scared of going entirely rangefinder, considering I’m doing studio for portraits… But maybe that’s just a simple learning curve. And if I sell my XT3 I could probably afford to get another lens, although I’m pretty happy with my combination of 23, 35 and 56.

    Hello Matt, thanks for the nice review! Which finish do you think is the more beautiful and retro in between Dura Silver and Dura Black? Does the Dura Silver develop a nice patina like the Dura Black because of the smudges? Thanks!

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have asked two questions, one of which I feel I can answer. I really loved the Dura Silver as it feel very retro, much like my old Olympus OM-4T (titanium) Film Camera I has 40 years (?) back. I don't feel the smudges that bad. But I don't own it. I only had it for something like three weeks to do the review. As for the patina, I really can't say, because as I just said, I don't own it and can't comment on that.

    I really appreciate this review! I'm currently trying to decide whether to upgrade from the XH1 and I have been finding it difficult to make a decision... mostly because their are lenses that I would like to use that aren't commonly used on the X-Pro3, such as the 50-140, 14-55 and 8 -16. I think you're the only one that has reviewed the X-Pro3 with any of these lenses and I greatly appreciate. That said, I'm sure its not common to place such a large zoom on that body but did you feel comfortable and or what are your thoughts about zooms in general on the X-Pro3 body? I would greatly appreciate any thoughts/feedback you'd be willing to provide!

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shawn, thanks for taking the time to write. You are correct, these lenses are not the "go-to" lenses for the Xpro line. But they are great lenses that will help your photography. So why not use them with your XPro3 or any other Fuji? Yes, it isn't the best balance, but it isn't bad. You can still use the camera. Yes, it gets in the way of the Optical Viewfinder, but that's they have an EVF! There are no rules. Honestly, both lenses worked well and gave me amazing pictures. What they look like on the camera is of little concern to me. The weight of the lenses did, in fact, affect the balance but not to the point of making the camera difficult to use. If you want the rangefinder-style body then get the X-Pro3. But the real replacement for the XH1 is the new XT4! Have you looked into that camera?

    Can the Sub-LCD on X-pro3 turn off while shooting? If not the X-pro2 is more stealth.

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the Sub Monitor, as Fuji is calling it, can not be turned off. But it isn't bright. In fact it is rather hard to read in some light. It is called "Color Memory LCD". I believe it is the type of screen that gets more readable in brighter light. Like you'd like on a smart watch. It doesn't glow, so it's not distracting.

  • @CatwalkPhoto
    @CatwalkPhoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wonder if the camera is still weather resistant with the screen flipped down. Also, I think I'll miss the D-pad from my X-pro2. Hope the diopter wheel can be locked too.
    Now, the big big plus for me at least will be the brighter and bigger evf window. I had an Xt-3 which I sold for the X-pro2 and It felt looking through a needle hole compared to an Imax :-)
    Thanks for your review.

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll look into the question on the weather seal. I would assume it is still sealed even when the LCD is open. The camera has 70 points of weather seal. Surely, just folding the screen isn't making it more weather sealed. But I'll check with Fuji.
      I also miss the d-pad. The joystick can be finicky at times. Often when using it for selecting it actually moves up to the next menu item. This might be an issue with my early firmware. Let's hope.
      As for the diopter, it isn't lockable. I thought this was a problem when I first saw it. But I am happy to say, they have recessed the wheel so much that it doesn't seem to be an issue.

    The front command dial from what I know is now non-clickable. That said are you able to select ISO with it (or with the rear command dial) if you don't wanna use the twisting ISO dial on the top plate?

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think people are not using the "hidden" ISO dial correctly. I find it extremely easy and natural to use my thumb and forefinger to lift and turn the ISO dial for adjustment, never having to remove the camera from my eye. As easy or more natural than using a command dial. With that said, I have to say; I do not understand why they changed the front command dial and removed the push function. Unfortunately, they didn't consult me!

    • @MattBrandon

    I have not tested the camera but I think I would like the screen. I think it is probably great for shooting at waist level. I also don’t feel the need to look at a screen between every shot. When and if I need to look at the screen it seems to be easy enough to just flip down the screen. I wouldn’t chose to display the film simulation on the smaller screen though. If I was going to use huge lenses that blocked the optical viewfinder, I wouldn't use the x-pro3. The main draw of the pro is that viewfinder, so the screen is not an issue either. Its a premium price for Fuji, but still $800 less than a leica CL.

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the 8-16mm lens blocks the OVF. But for me the camera doesn’t dictate the lens or frankly the other way around. I shoot wide and I really enjoy the form factor of the XPro series. So when shooting with a big lens like that you simply switch to the EVF. That exactly why this camera has both. And BTW that is a freak’n amazing lens!

    • @jonuiuc
      @jonuiuc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get it has both options which is nice, was more getting at that if one is forced to use an EVF because of preference, a big lens, or ultrawide - I think the OVF can only display like a 28mm pov at widest) functionally its the same as using an XT3 or XH1 (for WR bodies) or an X-E3 (for another left sided viewfinder form factor), all of which are less expensive.
      That said the Pro3 and XH1 are the premium bodies which are more scratchproof or thicker metaled respectively, so maybe that's factor for some. I'll be looking forward to the refresh of the X100 line, as I'm more of a 35mm most-of-the-time person anyway.

    I really like the hybrid viewfinder and I get it, but I think it is still a missed opportunity for fuji and somewhat an unnecessary change as well.
    With that screen it basically means checking your images, take photos from a high angle and change settings will be a pain. Sure, I could use the EVF to solve some of the issues, but then I'd just get the X-T3 in that regard.
    Also, it means if you use a tripod or take video, this is gonna be frustrating as well.
    What I am saying is the change doesn't make photography/videography easier. Time will tell, I guess.

    It would be good to show the other functionity of that small stamp lcd like showing the exposure settings (shutter/aperture/iso) instead of just the film mode.
    Since the dpad is gone and replaced by a joystick, you lose 4 custom buttons. Have the custom buttons been implemented as 4 swipe directions on the touch lcd? This means that you now have to open the lcd just to use the 4 custom swipe modes? An extra step.

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The small LCD is called the Sub Monitor. I talk about it on my blog linked in the description above. Actually, It works fine, but at the time of this video, my firmware was so glitchy that it didn't really work as it was supposed to, so it was hard to comment on it. I have since been able to update the firmware and it now shows all the pertinent info you might want or need.
      About the fn buttons. Yes, the loss of the d-pad is frustrating - but as you suspected they did add the gestures to the touch screen LCD. I would prefer the d-pad personally, as I don't need to change my grip on the camera to punch the buttons. But now you must flip the screen down and then swipe. It's just not as quick. But it is not a deal-breaker.

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In reply to your first comment about showing the Sub Monitor in "standard mode", that's the mode that shows your shot setting, in my preproduction firmware I was shooting it wasn't working. But after, finally getting the firmware update, I can say, it is very informative and easy to read. I guess it is good for a glance to refresh what you are shooting. Personally, I've never understood the reason for the basic information as it is all on the buttons on the top of the camera. But you can set it to other info as well. Like if you are shooting raw, or how many frames remain, etc.. Or, and this is helpful, you can set it to movie mode to see your video setting that is not visible on the camera.

      @michael p You are correct. For many people it is hard to eat right and exercise. For me, I manage to lose 30 + pounds and keep it off now for about four years because I have a wife that keeps me accountable. Similar with this, by not having the option it "keeps you accountable" (in a manner of speaking) to stay focused. I got fairly used to it after about a day. But, I still find myself looking down at the back every now and then. Thanks for your comment.

    Not that my opinion counts for much, but I prefer the LCD of the X-Pro-2. I think they have made the wrong choice with the X-Pro-3. It looks messy and clumsy to use the LCD flipped down... as if it were a point-and-shoot camera. with a pro-sumer class LCD screen. The X-Pro-3 feels less European now, and more like a Japanese retro experiment.... that slightly missed the mark. I will struggle to get one, since my X-Pro-2 is not exactly old, and works perfectly okay. May change my mind one day. Call me crazy but I would much prefer this camera with no LCD screen at all like the Leica MD (but keeping the new little screen on the back) and with a straight L shape angle on its right side like the X100f. I love my XPro2 but this design going lower towards the right is something that really bothers me a lot.
    Other than that, no need to change this camera design anymore.
    Correct me if I’m wrong but I feel that Fuji is attempting to touch a niche market (and I think they should) however, they are doing it in a subtle, shy and almost afraid way. I believe they would be much more innovative if they make the changes I suggest in my previous comment. I also think the customers would appreciate even more the X-Pro3. Just keep the production and the price of the X-Pro2 for those who really need or want the LCD and offer a new and really innovative, challenging, desired and special X-Pro 3 for the, let’s say, different level photographers. The way they are doing now will scare the average photographers and make the more experienced ones escheptical .

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think these are all very valid points. I am real mixed feelings about this camera. I love the looks and the feel. Where I did get used to the hidden LCD, when I did want it I wanted all of it, not just 90º. I think you are right about it being made for a niche market and maybe they should have been bolder. Things to think about.

      Sorry, for that. As I state in the video I hardly ever use the OVF, so the omission was not deliberate. But you are right, the bigger and bulkier the lens is, the less useful the OVF is. The large lenses not only cover what you see, they also cover the focus areas.
