I’m new to eastern Washington and primarily a southern saltwater fisherman so seeing how similar the gear and techniques are is a big motivator for me getting out and trying for these fish, great video and good info.
I discovered your channel with your last video of the Pack Fish 7. I recently bought one and loving it so far. I'm down the Snake River where it meets the Colombia. keep up with the great content. Tight lines brother.
All these tips are really great. I catch 5 ft. sturgeon on an medium 6ft. ugly stick, bass pro shop spinning reel with 12-20lb. test monofilament. For bait I use a gob of night crawlers with crayfish attractant. If I have 2 poles set up, the sturgeon will, 80% of the time bite on the Iighter line. Also the crayfish scented attractant on the night crawlers, seems to up my odds significantly. I just use my drag and take my time, it's fun!
I caught a 9ft sturgeon 2 years ago that fought like crazy! It jumped clear out of the water more than 10 times! Every sturgeon i caught before that was really lazy and i had never had one jump even once before.
I recently subbed and im really enjoying the videos! This one really has me reminiscing of when I lived in Portland between 1997-2006. my friends and I would ride our bikes to the Columbia River and fish for Sturgeon. we didnt have the rod made for fishing large fish but we would hook keepers and maybe some we just couldnt get off the bottom with our weak setups lol.
Have you tried the rig rap ez sinker slide that you don't have to cut your line to put on? If not I would recommend them because there easy to use and there plenty strong and dont come off
Great content, have you ever thought about fishing catch and release for oversized below Bonneville? My buddy and I have do e it a few times, big, big fish there and after 1 big boy you are spent. Also fish the lower Columbia and have 15 to 20 fish days, you should look into a trip. Keep up the great content.
Nice job again i enjoy watching your videos my question is Couldn't you have released that fish today and tried for a bigger one. Because that fish wasn't in any distress and would have lived with no problem. And keep the video's coming
Technically, yes I could've released it. However, don't take my two very lucky keepers as a sign of easy fishing. I'm one of the very few and lucky fishermen this year to have tagged out on two keepers. I know a handful of people who have caught well over 50 sturgeon each this year and have not landed 1 single keeper. It's tough fishing despite me being extra lucky this year!
Good stuff. But i have a few advice that i do. I noticed you use a 25lb mono for your weight, u should use like a 10lb mono for your weight. So if your weight snags, itll break off the weight only. Not your whole leader. Also maybe consider using pyramid sinker? It may hold better and not drift around. And last considered switching to braid for mainline.. good luck!
Guessing you're a Spokane area guy. I'm from Colville and routinely fish Walleye, Kokanee, Rainbow and Burbot. For years I've been pulling in Sturgeon which I had to release. Now there's a legal limit, not one to be found. Sheeeesh!
Most waters in Washington are also catch and release. I only know of two bodies of water that are open to retention right now which Lake Roosevelt is one of them. In Washington, any sturgeon over 55 inches cannot be taken out of the water unless that fish is legal for retention.
Now I recognize the place. Is camping there open for first come first serve? I looked for a reservation but did not see any. Or is it day use? That place is very snaggy full of rocks. Probably best to use 20lb line for the weight for sacrifice.
When did sturgeon open for retention this year? Is it still open for retention? IF so, I need to get on the ball, & get out there with the nieces, & nephews!
I remember in some of the other sturgeon catching videos that you extended the Rod to help with leverage? Can you explain or did you have another video that shows how? thanks and another great video
I don't want to create any problems but i have taken out sturgeon with tren 6lb line big shad with the same tired 6lb line and until that it runs out completely i will continue using it. But I do understand people who needs to feel 100%safe then go with 100 LB lines then you are safe.
That was an awesome video. Congrats on catching your limit for the year. I'm really interested in getting out there soon. Where would you recommend me trying for the first trip?
I thought Leif would be doing a collab sturgeon video with you by now, I think that's a bucket list species for him. Would love to see that Video come together.
Are you running 250 yards of 50 lb mono or do you have some braid backing on that reel? BTW: My kids call sturgeon "mousefish" because of the pointy nose and whiskers. If there can be a catfish, a roosterfish, and a dogfish, then why not a 10 ft, 400 lb mousefish?
Since I retained 2 keepers this year (annual limit), I cannot sturgeon fish at all on Lake Roosevelt anymore including Catch and Release. I can still catch and release elsewhere like the Snake River.
I just prefer the abrasion resistance of mono. A lot of people I know use braid, but it comes down to personal preference and on your desired application. I learn towards monofilament when bank fishing around rocky areas.
Spawn net works great for the only real dead bait I use abd it's for fresh water giant catfish and it keeps the hotdogs and bait on perfect must have if using delicate easy to lose bait. But sturgeon is what I miss most about living I'm north bay Ontario as a kid and my parents got me crayfish traps I set emm in creeks and lakes and would catch tons of them to bring home and have a crawfish boil like we do down here in the south. All the guys at the racetrack my parents owned thought we was crazy doing a crawfish boil xuse nobody does it except very small area in the south does it and they all was hooked cuse beer goes perfect with it but qe had to order the boil seasonings and stuff like that as well can't get it qt all in cannada. So when your a kid from south Georgia and Alabama then gotta move to cannada due to my dad being in airforce you just catch your own. Riding my bike down the side walk with my little trailer on my bike and my traps full of crayfish everyone thought I was crazzy or never new you can boil then abd eat emm lol. I would get about 60 lbs I would catch every time I set the traps out over night down the creek or off piers on shallow rocky parts of lakes abd catch monster crawdads and they are so much cleaner then the swamp ones down here to so that was a huge plus in taste
I love fishing doen here on gulf coast catching spec trout flounder and red fish and sheep head but I miss cannada due to sturgeon and walleye fishing. I use only artificial ever and no live or dead bait for sturgeon and I used same hig head and soft plastic every time for sturgeon and killing them jigging they catch it on the drop sane with the saltwater stuff I said above same soft plastic eel everytine and 3/8 mirrorlure jig head and that's it abd I limit out in 45 minutes for both types of fishing on every weekend sonedats longest is 2 hours ever for the sake water I said above nice setup man love it. Abd I use baroness jig heads abd hooks only especially in salt water abd bass fishing so if they swallow it less chance in killing a gut hooked under size fish so it lives and adds a little more challenge if the way you fish is to easy lol. And I love sturgeon so much due to that they are a true definition of a water born and living dinosaur them things have been here for millions of years and still look like their prehistoric relatives with sane plates and Armour abd teeth to
here's a trick you can use instead of buying the spawn net, you can use woman's pantyhose they works but ghetto though. brother , instead using line to tie your bait have you tried using threads which is so much easier to wrap and tie.
Dont need lines for the weight. Just clip it onto the slider. Of if u must, make the line shorter so it wont get snagged. Great fishing nonetheless! 🔥🔥🔥
I'm not much of a sturgeon angler, but I really appreciate you explaining it straight to the point and in a basic way that even I can understand it.
I’m new to eastern Washington and primarily a southern saltwater fisherman so seeing how similar the gear and techniques are is a big motivator for me getting out and trying for these fish, great video and good info.
Nicely done Samong 👍! Love how you’re so informative and detailed - that’s a huge plus!! Your videos never disappoint :)

Im in Yakima but from the Tri-Cities
Know this is 2 years old, but thank you for the refresher. Awesome video. Tightlines🤙🏽
You make some great videos. I appreciate all the editing you do because they look super good. Keep it up man!
Love the sturgeon videos! Awesome job getting the 2 for the year. Sad to see them go for 2020 but bring on the elk videos!! Its getting closer!
Gonna go for some Sturgeon for the first time this week! Thanks for the tips.
great video! thanks for all the info. I'd like to hit Roosevelt someday (well, for sturgeon). Very instructional!

What state?
@@megaconda07 I should have specified, I live in Illinois and travel to middle Wisconsin for LAKE sturgeon fishing, not white sturgeon.
What a beautiful scenery. Keep it up brother.
I was told Dacron leader is better for not hurting the fish. And that mono can cut them up
Hey I do a lot of fishing with big Bank fish Big Al and rich just wanted to let you know do you ever use circle hooks man😮
Nice 👍 catch and congrats 🎉 for the season of sturgeon fishing bro! ❤️ love your video !
I was lucky enough to catch and R a green sturgeon. It was a young one. 27-30 inch. Was just using regular fish finder rig and store bought shrimp.
I caught a 9ft sturgeon 2 years ago that fought like crazy! It jumped clear out of the water more than 10 times! Every sturgeon i caught before that was really lazy and i had never had one jump even once before.

awesome tutorial. would b keen on landing a sturgeon one day especially from the shore haha that was a monster sturgeon at 11:48
Thanks for your video Samong. Please tell me where and when I can fish sturgeon this year. Thanks

Was this at Marcus Island Camp ground?
Where do you catch these from? Looking to go out and catch me one very soon!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing!
What a monster fish 🐠!
Awesone i was hoping you was gonna do the 3 c's. Specially the cook part.
I was wondering if you could help me out with a spot on roosevelt? Never sturgeon fished and wanna try it out
Going to add this on my to do list!! Looks like a blast!
Dude great video! Really informative and instructional. What's the biggest sturgeon you've caught?
The biggest sturgeon for me so far would be the one earlier this year on the Snake River.
Do you ever get back lashes when casting? What kind of reels are you using?
Guessing you're a Spokane area guy. I'm from Colville and routinely fish Walleye, Kokanee, Rainbow and Burbot. For years I've been pulling in Sturgeon which I had to release. Now there's a legal limit, not one to be found. Sheeeesh!
Here in Idaho we are catch and release only on sturgeon. Can't even take them out of the water
Same In British Columbia the Fraser River and only a single barbless hook

I just subscribed. Keep up the good work!
Can you do a cook video on the sturgeon you caught
Now I recognize the place. Is camping there open for first come first serve? I looked for a reservation but did not see any. Or is it day use?
That place is very snaggy full of rocks. Probably best to use 20lb line for the weight for sacrifice.
It's open for day use right now so you have to either sleep overnight at other campgrounds that are open for camping or hotels.
When did sturgeon open for retention this year? Is it still open for retention? IF so, I need to get on the ball, & get out there with the nieces, & nephews!

When is the next sturgeon open I want to try it out
The only thing I miss about California was sturgeon, stripers, and salmon .
Fraser River in British Columbia is catch and release only and single barbless hook
U guys ever tried baitrunner fishing reels for sturgeons?
Any tips for casting conventional reels? I have one setup on a 12ft rod with 50lb braid but have been having a lot of trouble, thanks
Something to look forward too! (first)

Wife and I are looking for a place on the Snake to do some cat fishing... Any areas you might suggest?
Lyons Ferry is probably the most popular for channel catfish.
@@SamongOutdoors Thanks for the info...and we do look forward to your fishing adventures ...
Hey every year we got to Roosevelt and fish for bass and trout
He'll yes.!
What are those rods you are using rated for -- line and lure ratings? Thanks.
25-50lbs line and 6-12oz
Awesome job
I thought Leif would be doing a collab sturgeon video with you by now, I think that's a bucket list species for him. Would love to see that Video come together.
Where is this spot? I’ve been looking for a place to fish keeper sturgeon on banks for months
Good catch brother
What river did you go to and wats the address to the river I live in Portland OR I want to know !

It depends, but I sometimes will have braid backing.
Me and my dad tried fishing for them but current kept tossing our weight and bait back. We had everything wrong lol
“He’s small”
Me: that’s a big fish!
Nice looks like your at marcus campground
What part of Roosevelt? Above or below Gifford? I’m from Spokane and just tryna get my family out to catch some aswell!
Kettle Falls
since you land 2 keepers , can´t you fish anymore in the year?, not even releasing?

you still using the same setup as your other video - specifically how long is the lead from the swivel? and the hook is only 2 inches?

Dam you barely see a lot of mien TH-camrs haha. Nice sturgeon tho man. Those fish aren’t easy to hunt down hahaha
Tell me when you are going sturgeon fishing again, I want to go :P.
Tell me about your rods, make, model, length??
Ugly Stick Model: USBWBSF2550C122
Damm bro how far up on lake Roosevelt do you guys go ?
Most sturgeon fishing is in the Kettle Falls area, but I’ve known some guys that have got them in the Hunters area.
How do you not have to put ur thumb on the spool
Just set your drag properly. You can burn/cut your thumb with the tension of the fishing fighting.
@@SamongOutdoors thanks

How far out do you cast 50 yards 100 yards
Probably closer to 100 yards. I'm not as good at casting as some other bank fishermen.
Where is it open in wa for keepers ??
Lake Roosevelt
what about ur rod and reel?
It's listed in the description.
Use a kayak to run your lines out?
We don't have a kayak, but we can certainly do it with a boat. It's too much of a hassle though and we catch sturgeon just fine by casting.
What river mile you at ?
I don't know the mile markers, but this is just by Kettle Falls.
Is it illegal to use crappie for bait?
That really depends on where you are going sturgeon fishing.
Who else noticed that last rod bend down at 11:40
Good catch!
Can u keep them there?
Yes.
We can't keep them where I'm from
Care to share ,please where is this place exactly located.I want to fish and retain sturgeon.I love your videos.thanks!
