There was no privacy for the newly wed couple in most of the royal courts really. In Portugal all the court accompanied the couple to their bedroom and stayed there for a while.I think that in France it was even worse;the courtiers witnessed everything.There was a true procedure about getting ready for the wedding night in the Portuguese court.We could witness that with the Portuguese royal family who accompanied and helped Pedro and Leopoldina to get ready for their wedding night in " Novo Mundo".Quite funny. In the "Tudors" season one ,the court also witnessed the wedding night between the Portuguese king and Margaret Tudor ( they never married , that was an historical mistake).

So that later, there could be no claims from either party that the union wasn't consummated because that could be grounds for annulment. And since those marriages were usually for political gains, I doubt they wanted to lose the other party over some technicality.
