      Well they liked to show decolletage during the Renaissance, so it wouldn't be inaccurate if Mary's neckline was lower. Elizabeth's in that scene was maybe a bit too much for that time in England, but for example the lavish dresses in The Borgias were quite accurate for the typical Renaissance fashion.

    Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube - ‘Let others wage war: thou, happy Austria, marry’. This famous saying is invariably quoted when the rise of the Habsburgs is put down to the success of their dynastic marriage policy, in which young archdukes and archduchesses were frequently married off as children to members of other dynasties, or indeed to relatives of their own.
    Emperor Maximilian I is credited with the greatest success in the implementation of this policy - through his own marriage and those of his son Philip the Fair and his grandson Ferdinand, the dynasty gained Burgundy, Spain, Bohemia, and Hungary. However, the famous saying ignores the many strokes of luck that contributed to the rise of the Habsburgs - and also the fact that their gains were by no means always achieved without loss of blood. Wars were an equally important element of Habsburg policy as marriages.

      Plenty of movies with massive battle scenes but in this very realistic series about how life was like then, the politics and the conspiracies and intrigue are the stars. VERY well written, acted and executed. the preperation for war and then the aftermath were what was important in telling the story.

      Not true. From Wikipedia's entry on "sidesaddle": Sitting aside dates back to antiquity and developed in European countries in the Middle Ages as a way for women in skirts to ride a horse in a modest fashion while also wearing fine clothing. It has retained a specialty niche even in the modern world.

    • @maryhughes1087
      @maryhughes1087 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's somewhere in between. There are specially designed sidesaddles dating back to the 1300's, but they tended to suck and usually required that the lady's horse be led by another's. The first really stable sidesaddles that allowed a woman to control her horse didn't show up until the 1600's. and the modern sidesaddle that we use today was invented in the 1830's.
      So, while riding sidesaddle was a thing in the 1400's, it wouldn't have looked like that. It looks like she's using a modern sidesaddle.
