From welfare case to war horse, Penny retires from The King's Troop

I rescued a horse in Virginia in 1975 in Virginia, a bay mare named Penny. I was in high school and I paid the horrible owner 300 dollars for her. Brought her back to be beautiful. She lived the rest of her life being loved....
What a fab horse, after a crap start and 12yrs of service, she finally gets to kick her heels up. I hope whoever gets her treats her like the star she is. Well done WHW and the Army for treating her so well.
The king's troop look after their horses so well! They look super healthy and extremely lucky to live in a rich life. :)

Well this post is quite old but I need to make a comment anyway she is absolutely stunning! A true rags to riches story, and so full of love I don't know how anyone can just hand over the reins per say without choking up! I'm balling like a baby I guess mine stems from because I take them in my entire heart and soul but I also know they know that she's going to a place that is perfectly fantastic! I wonder if he ever thinks of her do you ever hear back from the King's guard ? if I remember correctly that's what you called them. Nonetheless I hope her retirement was exceptional!
What a wonderful gift. Penny is so beautiful. This remarkable story brought tears of joy. So elated. Penny will now enjoy a life of semi retirement and joys of riding the trails. Thank you for sharing.

Penny's recovery is wonderful, such nice looking horse. It's very cool that she's been helping the military and has been in fun parades from time to time.

A beautiful bay......my mare was a blood bay registered quarter horse, retired from the show ring at 12.....still love horses.
So nice. She was saved, and got on to be In the guard.

Penny is a very lucky horse. She's had 12 years wonderful care after an appalling start. I hope that she will be allowed to live out her days as a pleasure horse in a loving home with a few hacks a week and an equine companion or goat for company.
...and this is how we should honor our horses for the work they do for us.... not be thrown away like garbage ! Happy retirement Penny :)

The US really needs a system like this! I knew someone with the Army's Old Guard Cassion Unit, the closest analog in the US to the artillery horse unit in England. He said that many of the horses they are donated are Penny's age or older when they get them, and service life is hard on these horses. The Cassion Guys would be grateful for some younger horses.
