Horse owners fail to recognise dangers of obesity

  • If asked to describe a typical horse cruelty case, most people would immediately think about a thin horse, but in reality fat and obese horses are now at epidemic level and the long term effects they suffer can be catastrophic.
In the first research of its kind, World Horse Welfare surveyed 2150 members of the general public to provide feedback on the biggest horse welfare problems in Britain today. Combined with the daily findings and workload of their 16 UK Field Officers, the charity has gained a unique insight into what the public perceive to be the main problems and what is actually happening in reality.
More than 50% of people either did not correctly recognise an overweight horse or (if they did) indicated that it posed no or a low welfare threat.
If you are concerned about your horses weight or are worried about a horse you have seen, please visit www.worldhorsew... for information, tips and advice.

Obesity in animals should be classified under abuse. They have to eat what is put in front of them, no matter the sugars, fat and empty calories. Obesity in horses is cruel, especially if the horse is being ridden consistently. It is asking way too much of them. I once saw a girl at a show haul her obese horse around a 3'6" course- the poor thing looked like he would drop dead any second. People think their horse is on a diet when they cut their feed, but it only slows the metabolism.

I love how world horse welfare helps people who don't know how to care for horses identify potential dangers. Great job!!! Keep it up!! :)

When I first got my horse, he was obese because the lady that was taking care of him only lunged him once a week, and he had no muscle either. My trainer took this as a learning opportunity and decided to educate me about the effects if we let this go on and then we put him on a diet and exercise program. A few weeks ago, our vet commented that he felt my horse was at an ideal weight and his neck and back are mostly muscle. Many people think that he is 15 years old, when he is actually 22.

My Warmblood is the same as yours, he gets ridden 5 times a week, and is given plenty of food but people are always saying how thin he is. You can see his ribs, but only when he is standing in a certain way, he has more than enough energy as well. I think far to many people have come to think of overweight horses as normal.

Milliesos you are so right, in the show ring the judges will go for the obese ponies. This is a hidden subject but should be openly discussed. Why go for obese ponies????
My pony was overweight and got laminatis. And it was all my own fault I had been uneducated, ignorant and too busy to keep an eye on his weight.. It requires a lot of managent of your pony to keep him slim and fit. This is in a nutshell why so many ponies are overweight and laminatic these days...

    @militaryqt thanks for your message.
The SOS Survey targeted the general public, people with horse experience, horse owners and equine professionals. This approach enabled World Horse Welfare to make comparisons between the different groups in order to better understand the perception of horse welfare abuse in the UK. Whilst responses were received from a cross-section of the public, the majority of respondents had some form of horse experience.

Hey Mijte, if you still need help, read Jamie Jackson's book "Paddock Paradise: a guide to natural boarding". Depends on your circumstances if you can set it up but it is really good - suggests setting up a trail rather than a square paddock, horse has to travel further in a day to find food, hay at one end, water at the other, sections with gravel to reduce grass available & its good for their hooves. Much much healthier for horses & it's not hard to do. Good luck.

I hear some people keep saying how their horse are strong enough to carry two obese people or so. How do they know the horse isnt in pain? If they really care about their horses, surely they wouldn't do that to them anyway? I remember going on a horse ride at a stables in Scarborough and they were struggling to find the biggest horse they could for my friend who was quite big. The biggest horse they had looked to be struggling, i saw her pretty much straining with her legs.

Okay, someone said that they thought that their pony was fat but she was "just pregnant"? Wtf?!? How do you not know that your pony was pregnant? Did you breed her, or was it backyard breeding?

Same here. My warmblood is more than half Thoroughbred and, according to our vet, is extremely fit.
I've been told that dressage judges have scored him low because he looks "too slim". He is fed a special diet of free-choice hay, plenty of grain, beetpulp and vegetable oil for extra calories, vitamins and supplements as required. He has plenty of energy but just doesn't lay down fat.
I see so many overweight horses and ponies and am always surprised that more don't end up with laminitis.

there's only one obese pony at my barn but that's because he's a field pony (lives in field with shelter) and wasn't used in lessons or anything for like six months after a leg injury. he's currently back in the school program and is being exercised several times a week. he's so chubby, my saddle slipped =)

bless hes eyeing up the feed bags lol. ive a native a dales lives out most of the year and just come in and on 1 net of haylige a day. vet come out to do our other ones jab and said he was fat eyeing up poor ted!. he can live on fresh air and even after living out all year last year with a rug and haylge once a day he had his booster and the vet said he was fat!. hes 12 had him from 6 months old, not in work for a few years but fed accordingly. my concusion, they are like us some of us dont eat much do our jobs etc but will never be slim, we look after our animals we are what we are and so are they unless they get hudge. if they are dangerously fat then if the liverys will allow, as let face it alot of people are in liverys etc they wont allow you to fence a small peice off for a fat pony then hey presto people are forced to lock it in a stable or let it out with the others and whos the bad one. id say the greedy livery owners maybe its about time the yard owners get rules and regulations, esp regarding turnout and lack of it cause they want the money but dont want there precious fields churned up?. how often are horse owners forced onto a yard and there allowed out in the school once a day because its winter or its been raining etc etc..def need rules for livery yards and all of them to cater for fat horses, descent turnout so many hours etc a day, ALL YEAR! xx

as always, great work that you guys do, however the findings on this survey doesn't necessarily reflect the overall condition of the horse population if you surveyed "2150 members of the general public" as what percentage of those people surveyed actually own horses? If the survey actually questioned horse owners, you'd have a better idea of how this is reflecting the horse population.

I have to slim shetland pony's I am very aware of the danger of a european build shetland pony getting to fat. The rounder he gets the higher the risk of hoove disseases! people please don't use shetland pony's as decoration for your riding horse. And deffinatly don't put them on full spring grass. You will KILL you horse with a very painfull death. And even if they get founders or something... and make it. There always stays something of that. Don't kill them with kindness and basicly neglect.
