  • While this conference has a focus on British politics, voters across the four nations are increasingly making fundamentally different choices at the ballot box. This panel will discussed these changes in the fundamental nature of British politics, and look forward to upcoming elections in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This panel is part of a conference by UK in a Changing Europe that brings together some of the best academic experts on public opinion from across the UK, senior politicians and journalists to explore the key questions facing British politics - including the current strategies and prospects of the political parties, and the way in which political identities and attitudes have changed in the last half-decade. The conference coincides with the launch of our new report 'Brexit and party politics in the UK'.

@Simon John that May be but should Scottish people not choose their Government? The SNP is the largest party in Scotland yet Tory policies govern Scotland.

Simon, why do you resort to saying Scotland would be bankrupt. Based on what, data based on being in the union?
What have you based your opinion on? Economincs, rescources, EU membership, etc Explain.

Simon get the boot out of your mouth, Scotland is more than capable of running its own affairs. It has the necessary aspects of an economy as it stands. Most of what we need is here already. Its a no brainer. Roll on Scotland, stride ahead. Get your Independence soon.

      @Simon John
      Democracy isn't a one-time event
Democracy didn't end in Scotland in 2014.
      2019 general election in Scotland
      Scottish people voted in
SNP 48 MPs up 13 MPs
Tory 6 MPs down 7 MPs
      Liberal 4MPs
Labour 1 MP down 6 MPs
The SNP had Indyref2 in their election manifesto.
2021 Scottish parliament election proportional voting system Scottish people voted in 72 MSPs a majority of the Scottish parliament who had Indyref2 in their election manifestos.
The SNP have won the last 11 elections in Scotland, 8 elections since 2014.
The Scottish government has a democratic mandate from the Scottish people to hold the Indyref2 vote.
If the 533 English Westminster MPs continue to block the Indyref2 vote then it's a forced union.
Westminster tried that in Ireland and look how that turned out.
In an independent Scotland the Scottish people would be governed by the government that they vote for and not be governed by the government that another country voted for.
The Scottish people haven't voted by a majority for the Tories since 1955 yet keep getting Tory government and policies. Scotland gets the government that the English vote for.
A London court set up by Westminster which has 533 English MPs makes a judgement of a law voted through by Westminster which has 533 English MPs, that the Scottish people from the Country of Scotland cannot hold a democratic vote to decide their future.
If the 533 English Westminster MPs continue to block the Indyref2 vote then it's a forced union.
Westminster tried that in Ireland and look how that turned out.

@Simon John Our not part of Schengen means having to queue for passport control when we holiday in the EU. Freedom to make trade deals has led to our photocopying some of the trade deals we had as an EU member. We are free to lower our VAT rates but in fact taxes have risen. We have supposedly £385m more to spend on the NHS but do not. We have the right to control migration from outside the EU, as we always did, but still do not do so. The one tangible change benefit from Brexit is that we now have blue covers on our passports printed incidentally in the EU. At least we did not bring back the dreadful black ones with the hole in the cover that revealed the number.

My point is that all your issues could be fixed while the UK still remaining a part of the EU. Also the Schengen agreement is one of the nicest things to have if you actually travel. Everything is so fluid because of that. Also a lot of the things that you mention sounds like you want the UK to be able to do dodgy shit.

There is no UK. There is a soon to reunify Republic of Ireland, Independent Scotland and Wales and England alone, forced into independence as the Scottish people dissolve our political union called Great Britain. All as a direct result of 15.2 Million voters in England outvoting the entire population of the rest of the UK to force Brexit on the Irish, Welsh and Scottish born. Even today with the publication of a new UK Energy policy, England did not consult the Scottish people and takes it for granted they can rely heavenly on Scottish Energy and natural resources without consulting our Scottish Government.

As far as I can see far from turning our backs on you, the Brits have been at the front of pushing back against Putin. It was the Brits that were supplying anti tank rockets in the run up to the invasion of Ukraine. European countries didn't want to spend their 2% on defence and relied on the US and the UK to put up the main defence of Europe.

I would divide England into three: Northumbria, Mercia and Wessex: two new archdiocese: Winchester, and Lincoln-Lichfield. Despite this absurd Red-Wall,, there is a profound difference in temper between North and Southern England, and eventually Brexit will deepen the chasm. The so called Red Wall will evaporate as northerners understand the consequences of Brexit.

The English voted to leave but the Scottish, Northern Irish and Welsh born voted remain. The problem is that as England has a far larger population whatever the English decide will be the outcome for the UK regardless of what the people in the other regions want. The English vote for a Tory government so the UK gets one even though the Tories are not the number one party in NI, Scotland or Wales.
