If you really want to see the genius of Vincent van Gogh, go to Google arts and cultures, then select artist, then go to van Gogh and you can see all his work in high definition . You can get really close to see the brushstrokes . It’s brilliant!
@@M.Sforza Yes. I have both ear's intact. Kindred spirit is a metaphor. I thank you for questioning my obvious metaphor as you seem to be confused. Happy to clarify. 😉
While I appreciate the overview of this artist's life and the reenactment from scenes in his life, I feel as though the narration often misses the artist's intentions during certain moments in his life. If anyone is interested, I highly recommend reading the translated letters involving Vincent, Theo, and Theo's wife Jo to really get a better understanding. I feel there's a lot of speculation and jumps of assumption revolving around his relationships with Sien, his parents, his "ear" incident, and his mental illness in general. It really hurt my heart learning what happened to his brother Theo shortly after, and Jo should equally be recognized as she's the reason we know the tale of these brother's tragedy.
How tragic that his painting was sold for an absurd amount of money only in death. He will never know that his work is so revered and relevant to this day. An insult to his tormented existence. I know absolutely nothing about art because I think it is entirely subjective (like music) But I am intrigued with Van Gough as a person and his self harm tendencies and suicide
This documentary has failed to point out hat it was Vincent Van Gogh's sister in law Joanna Bonger (I might have got her name wrong) who posthumously saved him from obscurity by championing his work. This is vitally impirtant to know.
The lady said he became the leading figure in the avant guard when in reality he died poor , unknown and sold only one painting. He became known well after his death.
And in case anyone was wondering, I've been in a mental hospital as well. There is a state of mind that isn't mania nor is it suicidal, it was for me a state in which ideas and the desire to create were so strong that it crowded out every other aspect of life, eating, sleeping, looking after my children and doing all the housewife chores expected of me. It was a state-driven from a place within which few people have the good fortune to go: grace. It is a state of grace in which I see everything as it is down to its elemental atomic appearance from which anything is possible, coupled with the sheer delight of the creation of art. I have spent the years since then trying to awaken those designs into pieces of art carefully kept in cedar chests or in the possession of a client.
Quite alot of emotional sensitivity in his creative work and even more explained in this story. Costly not having any other not able to understand or can find an individual where they truly are. Amazing he is. Crazy he was not.
What's wrong with being crazy? And of course he was crazy! You shouldn't be so judgemental and just because someone is crazy doesn't mean it's a bad thing he's just not well

THIS IS SUCH AN EXCELLENT CHANNEL! New sub/just discovered you. Your subjects videos are so varied, yet every single video interests me! How is that? You must be a very interesting and educated person.
Isn't there something to be said about the beauty the effects of time has on a work of art? The story of the artwork over time is revealed by the dulled color. The color that only with the help of time, can be created.
Let's be real, the world wasn't ready for him. He had ideas and paintings beyond his time. He was placed in that asylum because his way of thinking did not conform to that current time.
To say that Vincent 'mutiated his ear' doesn't quite do justice to what actually had happened. Because it is a proven fact that Vincent cut his ear off COMPLETELY. Not just 'mutulated' it.... Only a small piece of ear lobe remained attached to his head. A few years ago a medical diagram was found that was drawn by the doctor who treated him immediately after the incident. Doctor Felix Rey. This drawing shows exactly how the entire ear was cut off. Very disturbing when you think about it! The BBC made a great documentary about this historical find and the woman who found it after years and years of research.
Complete with Dutch Boy Paint ads on TH-cam! Please also note: There is no "University of Berkeley." It is, rather, The University of California at Berkeley. Otherwise, thanks for this interesting dual account.
When was this video made? There has been an award-winning book written about Vincent not committing suicide.haven’t you read it? When he was shot he was not in a field but by the side of a road just a few hundred yards from where he was staying. Shame for perpetuating all these falsehoods!
If today's people go bananas because they do not collect enough "likes" imagine this poor fellow, with all the religious mistrusts, his great hopes against the morals of his time and he only sold ONE painting...Wouldn't anybody go crazy?

From the letters it is clear that Van Gogh did not have a mental illness, they were written by a smart person and it is not possible for a mentally ill person to express such thoughts, it must be said that he was killed by the environment in which he lived, from the youngest child to the oldest he was ridiculed, belittled, spat on... yes, he was a difficult character, but the strangest thing is that the same people who rejected him, now weep for him and glorify him to the sky, for the pictures for which he could not buy food, the mediocre now give millions. His paintings have become an object of enrichment, his victim is once again abused by the money-hungry, -Van Gogh must be turning over from pain and injustice in his grave, Van Gogh is a crystal-clear example of the hypocrisy of people, of the blindness of those who are thirsty for profit.
Uhm this is pretty offensive to people with Bipolar. I know lots of people who have it, including me, and we can be just as intelligent and talented as those without mental illness. I suggest you look at your discriminatory views and think again...we can be brilliant if we learn to channel our energy
@@bipolarnerdgirl I ask you to read the text again, there is nothing against people with this disease in it, the text presents the fate of Van Gogh and there is nothing discriminatory, there is criticism of the hypocrisy and greed of people and your disease is not mentioned anywhere.

I love you for this. thank you!4
The only thing that made his works famous was the mere exposure effect. That's what convinced the Chinese to pay so much for them.
I've always been fascinated by him. I see something of a kindred spirit in him as an artist.

Yes. Other people always feel they know someone else which results in so much speculation. I have never been a fan of reenactments.

Sad! He never felt like he was enough. I feel he was a sensitive soul and was because of it, special.
His art was never corrupted by the market like art today

I think he had Asperger’s syndrome. It’s not insanity. He had a portal which allowed him to see objects and colours in a unique way.
Like Mozart had it.
Bless the soul, dear Vincent Van Gogh !!!
