Learning the Purdie Shuffle moved me from the depths of frustration as a novice drummer to a confident player having much more fun. It gave me a completely new understanding of groove, and allowed me to incorporate its principles into many other styles of playing. Thank God for the Purdie Shuffle!
I'm genuinely not exaggerating when I tell you that for the better half of a decade, I have been trying to find a way to help my brain understand and process the mechanics of this specific groove. That fundamental breakdown was so helpful, it allowed me to tie everything together. It's like I just leveled-up or something 😂
"So what you're going to do is start with the Spang-a-Lang and then you're going to tell the Spang to go take a Union break or somethin' ..." Cracked me up. I'm dead.
After not playing drums for nearly 20 years i recently picked up the sticks again. I discovered this guy after trying to figure out how to play doubles properly and now im on the way to being able to shuffle properly. Love this channel!
Man you made me realize the ghost notes on the snare were just the "and" or the 3 part of the triplet, like my mind just couldn't see it that way, thank you so much I discovered your channel through this video and you are amazing
Yep...you NAILED it. My jazz swing sucks! I always knew that, but. FINALLY a Purdie Shuffle lesson that focuses on how to get better at THAT, and then builds from there. My dude...love your channel, and your teaching style.
New old drummer here. Just found you scrolling around and am sure glad I did. 'Was' a drummer many moons ago and had some chops. Now as an older guy I'd like to become as well rounded as I can and your vids inspire that. Can't say how much it's appreciated when you break down stuff like this so I can find the count easily. I literally walked from my PC down to the kit and did a half decent shuffle right out of the bag. Look forward to seeing and hearing more from you, will be taking some of this down to blue tooth into the elec. kit. It's really frustrating as a guy who used to play to have it in the head but not be able to get it out. Your vids have really aided the motor coordination company again. Thank you kindly.
I was always a metal drummer, and recently I've been branching out more on the drums to learn some of the basics I missed. I have been trying to get certain shuffles down, and to absolutely no success. I always thought it was my left hand playing too loud, and hard focused that but for some reason the shuffles I play still sound very stiff. I have had success with the jazz swing, but only on very low volume dynamics. I grabbed my practice pad and realized my right hand has been muscling out each stroke on the 'a-lang' part thanks to this video. Thank you Rob Brown! I have been stuck in the mud on these and I finally have something to work on to make them better, and I couldn't find instructions elsewhere that really covered this. I already am seeing a difference because it softens the 'a' part of the 'a-lang', and now my right hand is starting to understand that loose characteristic.
Look up Tony Allen. He talks about how he NEVER bangs his drums cuz he sees his drums as a woman he loves. But when you see him drum, he sounds dynamic af. He was Fela Kuti's drummer.
Getting back to drums after 14 years off. I need to learn this shuffle. I think I have been playing it by feel without understanding it. This is very helpful. Beautiful Drums by the way!
This entire video is amazing, but that 12/8 at the end really sealed the deal. And is there anyone you love watching play than Bernard Purdie? I don't think anyone else ever experienced more joy when playing drums.
Rob Brown is a very generous teacher. He will not miss even the smallest detail. I have some difficulties getting the speed up with the important right hand shuffle. But I guess it is mostly a technical and routine 'problem'.
This guy is awesome at instructing that applies to all levels...I was first impressed with rim shots...after giving up playing decades ago and coming back to it now...and the 70s when I played was all about rim shots being accents not the constant...I could not maintain constant accuracy of rim shots until Mr. Brown gifted the way to measure height of the snare...Man... that so instantly worked I've been a fan ever since...Happy B day...
Ok now. MIND BLOWN. I was a pop session drummer in Hollywood in the 80’s & 90’s working with Grammy artists and SUCKED playing a shuffle. Good thing I was only called upon once for a rock shuffle and it worked out . I would call someone else if it were a song that I needed to swing on:-( it was better to lose out on $$$ then embarrass myself. However I’ve dropped out of music in the mid 90’s and just now want to play again (just practice for fun) and I now believe BECAUSE OF YOU SIR, I suspect I will finally be able to swing and shuffle. Yay. You’ve unlocked the Rosetta Stone for shuffles . I can’t wait to try your method. I’m excited to play drums again .
You nailed it! I recently watched a video on the history of the shuffle. It comes from the sound of a steam locomotive shuffling down the tracks. The high hat / ride cymbal "spang-a-lang" is the pistons in the engine driving the whole thing.
My man beat down Brown I'm telling you I've been playing drums on and off for 10 years and I always wondered how do drummers get such a tight pocket groove like that I appreciate it just this one groove helps tie everything I know together perfectly thank u your a great teacher please 🙏 keep it up peace and love brother ✊🏾
Pro drummers get that tight pocket by practicing for hours a day & then playing five shows a week & maybe a couple of recording sessions in-between...Definitely no time for another job..."on & off" wont cut it>
He man Good explanation! I have played in a reggae band for 25 years, this drum riddim looks like a halfdrop . The swing feeling is about the same. Had a workshop from Jim Chapin ones, he talked about the muller techniek. One hit going down one in the middle and one going up. I would play the first and the last .thanx for sharing 👊
Thanks Rob! dude, I've played drums since I was 16 - started in jazz band then went on to gig at venues playing swing, etc. I unfortunately never had lessons was self-taught so didn't learn a lot of my basics like the 40 rudiments, reading, etc.. I am embarrassed to say this is the first time I've learned the Purdie shuffle for its true feel. I played this shuffle today for like 2 straight hours but will be focusing on my shuffle now for a while to perfect it. I always played these shuffles without the ghost notes on the snare - which changes the whole dynamic of the beat. the triplet feel between the hats and the snare are so awesome. I'm also deaf in one ear and a lot of times when I'm learning a tune I can't quite hear the highs so I miss hat work and some ghosting, so videos like this breaking it down are so helpful. thanks for breaking it down man! also, your 5 shuffle beat video is EPIC, thank you so much for breaking the shuffles down (Pocaro, Bonham, Purdie, etc). I'm glad to have found your channel man, much appreciated! Justin - Atlanta, GA
DUDE NO FREAKIN WAY! I just learned it while watching your video!!! THX SO MUCH Rob Brown!! This really improved my groove! It's time to experiment with it..
Rob is a great teacher, and unlike so many other shuffle instruction videos - he correctly reveals the true secret here... it's the right hand finger motion.
Thank you for your great explanation and breakdown, I finally managed to learn the purdie shuffle after years without playing drums, I sat down and watched your vídeo and it went through. Now I just need to practice more and polish it and work on the variations. But thank you very much, your video really helped me.
You got me regular I’m in Scotland, I’ve been playing for quite a number of years on and off, I’m self taught and I thought I knew how to play, I knew it all, till I watch Your videos and then I realised I had of a lot more to learn, thank you Bob
THANK YOU so much mate. I could do the basics of this but like you said, it still sucked. I looked at a lot of Purdie/Porcaro shuffle vids but as you say they didn't show how to do the right hand even though it's clear that this is the most important bit. It's taken ages for someone of your calibre to put this much needed video up there. Respect.
My 2 favorite groovekings are Bernard purdy , and Rob brown!!! This is gold. There are thousands of amazing drummers out there, but very few can make me really feel a sustained groove. Thanks Rob!!!
"I know there might be some of you out there wondering how old I am. I can tell you straight up, man. I don't feel anywhere near..." INTRO! That had me crackin up, man. You're the shit, Rob. Here's to many many more years of the amazing talent you bring to the groove community.
Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard someone breakdown the Purdie Shuffle quite like that. Thank you so much for REALLY breaking things down in such a simple way. I just started playing drums a few years ago and I’ve been playing on and off since then. I recently got very serious about my playing and after watching this video, you definitely blew my mind! I was focusing too much on the ghost notes and not working on tightening up my hi-hat work. Thank you so much for sharing!

This beat confused the living shit out of me when i was learning drums in the 90's. Someone finally showed me the Bonham shuffle and then it dawned on me lol.
Excellent lesson. This one of those things that's not all that hard to play, but it takes real skill to get it grove. Great playing and demonstrating.......
Love your feel with that groove. One thing that helped me tighten up this groove was practicing my right hand high hat patterns at different volumes while keeping the kick and snare volume consistent. Specifically playing the hats as quiet as possible allowed me to feel the shuffle without focussing too much on it.
Man this guy grooves!! :) I love Bernard Purdie, the man oozes class and character, a total individual, out there for so long bustin some great grooves and coming up with more than a few along the way. His instructional videos were and are so entertaining, informative and inspiring as well, I really can't say enough about how much the man himself made me feel at ease with his off-the-wall approach and very humane way of seeing things, he was a confidence booster for me and I have never even met the guy!
Happy birthday Rob ... from Egypt. Sorry for being like one year and a half late!! Thank you so much for your effort and time. You really inspire me. I am a beginner, and I am 48!!! So wish me luck! Thanks again

Really enjoyed just watching you PLAY this one. Rob. You broke down this one better than all others I've seen. Right on about the left hand. He's just going slide in there when the hi hat and bass start thier dialog. Great one today.
Rob, I dug it... I watched Burnard Purdie 'splaining his own shuffle first. Made me smile. I'm curious about the muscle memory it's necessary to develop as a drummer. Drumming is very cerebral! Good tips here, thanks.
Don't know how I've missed it but.... HAPPY BIRTHDAY to someone who is much appreciated by so many around the world. Thank you for all your contributions to the music community entirely. Not just drummers. without us applying on drums what you teach us, there would be much left to be desired of the music that we all play. I hope your day was special and happy Bro!!

You are the ONLY one that properly honed in on THE key item! I am buying a sweatshirt for this one reason alone!
10:06 "OHHHhhhh!" Channelling your inner Purdie! I just HOWLED! 🤣🤣🤣 Faces too. 🤣
Belated happy birthday from England.

Watching tap dancers actually helped my drumming and of course Rob.

Today’s lesson was taught by Rob ‘Shuffledown’ Brown. Excellent lesson.
Super excellent. "Shuffledown" sounds like a funky breed of long haired sheep
I’ve seen many tutorials on this drum pattern. This is the one which finally explains it. Thank you
I hope the people you gig with know how good they have it. Your playing can hold anything togather.
My man!! Thank you so much for being genuine and kind, plus a killer drum lesson! Very happy to find this tutorial
Dude, don't get NO OLDER for a time. Happy Birthday and thanks heaps for the lessons. Your presentation rules.
All I can say is damn! I have been way overworking this thing. Thanks Rob! You taught an old dog some new tricks...again!
