Nice find there old chap.I have a no of National engines ,some fully functioning,some in need of rebuilding, although none are like that model.National made an amazing array of engines which were used world wide and of very high quality.Very little remains of the factory now outside Manchester which was massive.Hope you get to save the engine and the Davy Bros pump , lovely piece of engineering!Regards from England.
Thank you mate ! Quite a few National engines over here in Australia. I have a nice Pitt engine that looks very similar in the casting shapes and the governor . Do you know if they were from the same factory? All the best.

I have come across the name of Pitt but know very little about them,the only other brand name to my knowledge associated with National Oil and Gas was Mirlees Bickerton and Day Ltd. Incidentally up until recently that latter co name was still extent on what remains of the buildings on the site of National at Ashton, Manchester. The co was taken over early 60's? by Hawker Siddeley Group who rapidly closed the site down! In 2004 I acquired by sealed bid a four cylinder stationary National diesel engine,it was brand new in its packing crate, never been fired,part of a cancelled order of two engines going to Burma. The seller was a long established millwright's in Bolton, Northern England,boy,it was like stepping back in time 100 years ago! The engine had sat in their yard,in its crate since 1959! Shipped south to the Midlands it took two days to gently cut away the shipping crate with a chainsaw,even the shipping crate was a work of art in timber! We keep the engine primed with fuel and oil but still it has never been fired, partly because unbeknownst to me until I got it out of the crate it's a hand start and a serious lump of an engine! If you would like more information about National check out the Anson Engine Museum website in Poynton, England. I have been there a no of times, their restoration work is absolutely top quality and they had volunteers who were former employee's of Mirlees, fascinating stuff! Cheers mate, not a steamer ( engine ). This one runs off gas that is made by burning wood in a furnace type of thing. Pretty bizarre way of getting a fuel source.
I presume this pump had to suck water up a very long pipe from well underground? Is there a more modern pumphouse nearby to supply the community with drinking water?

Your right John. Drew fresh water from a couple of miles away but not much lift, then pumped into a high water tank for town supply.
