Shes such a beautiful soul. Im always reminded by god that there is beauty even in the darkness. I may get banned for this, but that was probably the most profound example of something beautiful to be found in the darkness. I understand the parents rage. Believe me, i get it. But the way she demonstrated empathy and compassion for the person responsible for her grief is something we all can learn from. Her soul is in tact.

That hits me right in the soul.. Obviously, it doesn't justify what *he* did, NOTHING could justify that! Not any one thing!
But, it reminds us that we're dealing with a seriously sick *human being* here, a person who started out, like you, or me. He was born a boy, into this world of ours, this Nickolas Cruz..
And I doubt he was always a monster, this boy Nickolas. Long before he decided to go *FAR* off into the wrong path, leading him to shoot and kill other students, he had developed into a broken, horribly troubled and misguided young man because of his horrible upbringing at home, that he just couldn't handle. He really should've gotten help, and it angers me so much, that it got to this point, and that he did what he did, became a monster. It angers me, that his actions, what *HE* did, has claimed so many innocent lives! It really does strike me! It angers me most of all, that if his father would've secured that weapon from his son's reach, Nikolas would not have been able to commit such atrocities!
God be with the victims families! Praying for y'all! 🙏

I completely agree - I feel like hearing all of this anger from the other statements, it probably goes in one ear and out the other, because it’s all the same (not that I don’t understand it or disagree) but… being so much more insightful. Recognizing that he IS a human being, that he probably was suffering many years before he decided to do this, he was lonely, he was hurt - but none of that takes away the fact he decided to impost that hurt onto others. That is so much more intriguing to listen to. I feel like when you believe someone doesn’t understand you, you won’t listen to anything they have to say, cuz they don’t get it. But it sounds like she understood more, and that’s what may have turned his ear (hopefully)

She has the emotional maturity and introspective skills of someone much older than her. It wasn't just her words that were impressive but her conviction in them. That sort of assuredness comes from putting a tremendous amount of thought into what you're speaking about and having no doubt you're correct. She had no hesitation or outward appearance of fear. She was so vulnerable too.
Her life will never be the same but I think she'll be an amazing mother one day, if she so chooses, and wife to some lucky person. Even if she doesn't get married or has children I think she'll enrich the lives of those around her in general.

This world needs empathy more than ever. I have been bullied and as a result have bullied others because of the pain I was carrying. The cycle needs to break and the only way to do that is by accepting human beings as individuals and not as soilders of society. People have unique traits and characteristics and it’s alright to have opinions, but as long as the opinion is helpful and beneficial towards the Individual. Opinions are alright. Cruz was just abandoned and that’s what caused him to warp his mind in a negative direction. We’re humans after all, there is no one else in the universe that is going to give us compassion like humans do. I think we need to be repsonsible with how we treat others and ourselves, that way we move in the right direction as a society

My first opinion after hearing her say she thought about how this guy was feeling as a loner & crossed her fingers under her desk in class for him - she's called an Empath. They take on the feelings of others and are always considerate of others & what they're going through plus are usually introverts themselves. I'm also one so I recognized it quickly.

she doesn't sugarcoat it, she doesn't do it to butter him up, she doesn't say these things to seem like a better person. she is simply speaking with humanity. that to me is the biggest green flag a human can have. there is a limit to human empathy but no limit to human suffering. even the most empathetic human may not be able to forgive because that is how much pain a human can hold. i hope this girl can be a storywriter because she speaks with so much thoughtfulness. I especially like when she said that this is "real life" because it just further shows how grounded she is in believing in humanity over all. I didn’t know people like her existed. So kind, strong, smart, intuitive, wise beyond her years. She’s impacted the world with her words and message. A random youtube video I came across after searching for a Parkland update has made me think & feel more than I have in a long time. The world lost someone important when her bf was killed. True young love. Not only is it a rarity, but it’s the stuff fairy tales are made of. A cynical older person like me often gets caught up in my stupid problems, and they are stupid in comparison to the loss she’s been thru, and she just smacked me in the face with her wise words. She experienced a lifetime of love in the time she spent with Mr. Joaquin. I hope she finds it again in whatever form will help her heal the most. She’s a helper, like Fred Rogers told us to look for when things go wrong. Those are the people who will leave the most important mark on the world. Maybe they won’t leave a gigantic mark known world-wide, but to those closest to them them they will leave the important mark

They've been so numb and so neglected for so long that even that is preferable to them than their loneliness. We have built a society in which it's really easy for people to end up like this. Emotional connection is slowly disappearing. We do everything online, we "mind our own business" and we're experiencing loneliness at a scale never before reached in history.

Too late but, still she noticed. Not saying what he did is not wrong, but how many young men are out there like this, still waiting to be acknowledged, before they explode like a time bomb? Don't you think it's a little wacko to show a video about "empathy" for a school shooter to a class of school children..I'm sorry that's garbage.

I think your missing the point of what Gonzales was trying to get across. If everyone- including children- prioritized love the world WOULD be a better place. As an educator, I think the commenter wanted to make a difference in her classroom so that her class could be a safe space for her students and the world would be just a little bit better. And unfortunately, middle schoolers already have to learn about school shootings and be prepared for them so it isn’t an inappropriate subject. It’s their reality.
