Jin’s depression was already present since Tekken 4, he set aside the Mishima style after being betrayed by Heihachi, then he’s father appears alongside the revelation of the devil gene. In Tekken 6 he’s depression hits a breaking point we’re he reveals that he wants to destroy the Mishima line and the devil gene, including himself and he tries to do so by sacrificing himself while fighting azazel. Also it’s not canon but the movie blood vengeance makes this evident because he states so and not only that he ask Xiaoyu the it could be her who finished him.

To touch on the dark topic for a moment, your hunch was spot on. TW for anyone reading this.
Tekken 6 Jin admits to Lars that he never intended to survive. His goal was to go down with Azazel because being the villain needed to summon it early was a torture he couldn't handle, not when everything he did went against his mother's teachings. In TK7, Miguel's story has him fight Jin and he tells him why he's trying to kill him. Jin replies with just 'Kill me.' Jin very much wants to die. Even the start of TK8 while fighting Kazuya, he openly states that he'll kill him, but then follow him into death soon after to rid the world of the Devil Gene.
The reason Jin was such a 'dick' to everyone and ignored people was that he was doing his best to make his inevitable suicide plan as 'painless' as possible for those who would still miss him. He didn't think he was worthy of genuine bonds after all he's done, and it took his mother to tell him that, even now, his life is worth saving. I had chills when Jin yelled to Kazuya at the very end that he still wants to live and make up for everything he's done.
Jin's been misunderstood by fans for a very long time. While the plot point could have been handled better, it's still a situation that Jin, a kind person, was the only thing that could kill Azazel, and WW3 apparently NEEDED to happen to summon it early enough in Jin's life that he could kill it and save the world from the literal origin of evil.

You had me until the end. Jin could have looked for more ways before deciding he needed to summon Azazel early, but as soon as he was head of the Mishima Zaibatsu he did it immediately. He's was a villain for that, and trying to defend his action that way is just lame and boring of you.

The interesting thing with Angel Jin is that people have theorized for decades now what Angel in Tekken 2 was supposed to be and one prevailing theory was that she was the manifestation of of the Kazama powers, being the counterpart to the devil gene. And now in T8 it seems to be confirmed that this was exactly that. Basically Angel in T2 actually was a relevant character in some way.

20:40 I'm quite surprised you didn't catch that Jin has wanted to die since Tekken 4, Thorgi. His main goal was to eliminate the Mishima bloodline in its entirety, including himself. This is why Jun tells Jin that the Kazama style is to protect those important to them. That it's okay to want to live, even though he's longed so much to die; leaving no trace of the Mishimas on the Earth. Jin thought that in order to bring the curse of the Mishimas to an end, he had to die. Which is what made this whole character arc of Jin so worth it in the end.

For Reina's Devil gene there's also a fifth option: Hehachi specifically sought out mothers with the devil gene to have kids with (or spliced it into the kids after they were born) to make a strand of it that was loyal to him as weapons to fight Kazuya and Jin.

Jin has always wanted to end himself. Every game he brings up how he will get rid of the devil gene and then himself. He says to Kazuya “I’ll send you to hell and join you soon after.” The scene with Jun is so powerful because what she is explaining to him is that the Kazama power fosters life. All life is precious, and the hardest lesson for Jin is realizing that this also means *his* life is precious.
Jin has spent so long isolating himself. “How many precious things have you let slip through your fingers.” He tried to protect those he cares for by staying away, but all that ends up doing is hurting them. He learns that by taking care of yourself, you are taking care of your loved ones. Claudio says a similar thing (mistranslated in the subtitles as “I treasure” when it’s “you love” lol). He basically says Jin needs to take care of himself for the world and for those whom he loves. By the end of the game Jin literally says “I…I want to live!” And while he says this he thinks of 3 people. He thinks of devil Jin, the part of himself he needed to accept. He thinks of Jun who taught him that not only is it ok to desire life, it is his sacred rite. And he thinks of Xiaoyu, the one he wants to spend his life with. To him being with her is living.
What is Jin doing in his last scene in the story? He is with Xiaoyu on a road trip. He is living.

This game story mode is great. For such an over the top story, the writing is decent-great and the narrative flows good enough that you don't lose the plot. The references are amazing, and the music is probably my favourite thing from this story mode. Scene 1, already the music making a reference to one of the Tekken 6 intros, exclusive music like Jin vs Reina round 2, and new remixes from old themes. It's probably the first time I desire to have the story soundtrack for a fighting game.
As for the future, I would really love if Namco goes deeper with the alternative endings. I think a Tekken 9 where you play as Reina and depending of the choices you make, you get different endings could really benefit from it since it's a character we don't know much about. Jin's story is basically over and we could see from the sidelines how's he living, and Kazuya probably with his redemption arc that could end with a sacrifice. For the reason Reina has the Devil Gene, here's my headcannon:
There was an intro cutscene in Tekken 4 for Heihachi's story that said he did an experiment in creating a new lifeform which would have a mix of Heihachi'd and Ogre's DNA, done in order so that Heihachi could learn how to use it to control the Devil Gene. It was said the experiment was a failure.
I think that failed experiment lifeform was Reina. Once she was born Heihachi probably still taught her the style and hoped it could maybe awaken later, as well as have someone carry on his legacy.
I think that Reina's devil form isn't actually simply the Devil Gene, but actually somethint like Ogre's True Form, still monstrous and supernatural but different.
    Again, that's just headcannon.

  • @akiraasmr3002

The thing about Reina is you have to pay attention to the little details in the series like how the Mishimba Zaibatsu were experimenting on kids like Steve Fox trying to give them the devil gene. Heihachi Mishima began his own research into the terrifying power of the Devil Gene. In an attempt to to replicate this superhuman strength, the Mishima Zaibatsu started a genetic modification plan with the goal of replicating the effects of the gene on regular humans through the creation of a synthetic Devil Gene. Heihachi used eggs from the assassin Nina Williams, who was cryogenically frozen by Dr. Bosconovitch at the Zaibatsu at the time, to create babies that he used to conduct these experiments. Most of the children died as a result of the experiments and the supersoldier program was ultimately considered a failure. Reina is obviously a successful supersoldier experiment from his DNA spliced with the devil gene even though the program was originally considered a failure he must have succeeded later on using his DNA. Reina has the synthetic devil gene because Jin destroyed Azazel and his power in Kazuya and got rid of their devil gene passed down from the Hachijo and Mishima bloodlines.

I agree, best FG story we've had.
From the implementation of an actual tournament bracket in the story, Tekken force coming back, focused story with fitting fights, Lars-Heihachi flashback (like you 1st time I liked him), Claudio final arrow, surprise Azazel fight, Jin's development of embracing his allies, his past with Devil Jin protecting him, and his own life that actually feels like a continuation from T4 to the finale from Angel vs Devil to Jin vs Kazuya incorporating different styles was amazing.
My main issues was how much they hyped up Jun coming back only to not give us the interactions we were hoping since her fate ain't even really confirmed until the end. Almost feels like she could be T9 instead.
And the biggest one, I love the juxtaposition from Jin's arc in T6 where he tried to get the power to kill Azazel and thus the devil gene, and thus save the world in a twisted way in solitude, which he failed on all 3 hurdles and put the world into more chaos than ever before.
To then T8 where after embracing is allies, his past, and value of his own life to actually destroy Azazel, end the Devil Gene, and beat Kazuya saving the world. Felt like a perfect bookend for his story...
Only for Reina to have the devil gene still, felt like they finally broke away from it, even with her being Heihachi's daughter instead of Kasumi but I guess he got with another member of the clan or cloned in some fashion to have the devil gene or she's an experiment. Either way, like how the ending hints Claudio & Zafina may be alive, I wish they stood their ground instead of these fake-out st the very end/end-credits.

The reason why Zafina and Claudio survived it prolly cause Zafina never was in actual danger (only Xiaoyu shows mild concern and that concern isn't nearly big enough to be about her dying), while Claudio like verbatim says that he wasn't planning to sacrifice himself which implies that he had a safe way out
Jun is most likely alive due to everything from Harada's words to everything in-game. And tbh mad agree withvyour take and kaz. He has his own character arc to go through since everything he believes in is pretty much Hei's ideology and Kaz can't really believe in it wholeheartedly
I see Devil Reina as a way to bring in return of Devil Jin and Hachijou (clan of Kazumi). It's possible that Hei somehow managed to hook up with another Hachijou (be it purposefully or not) which isn't impossible since Hei is a pathological liar and pretty much entirety of his T7 interview is most likely him making shit up to appear as a hero to press. actually the subtitles were completely wrong! he actually says something more like "I don't plan to sacrifice myself in vain", but for some reason the subtitles imply that he did not plan to sacrifice himself at all! There's a bunch of horrible mistranslations in tekken for some reason, specially on non-japanese speaking characters. Azucena says "necessitas de más café!" on her rage art, which just means "you need more coffee!", but it gets translated as "had your morning coffee yet?" for no reason! And let's not gloss over Tekken 3 where Heihachi might've gathered some DNA samples from Ogre. So put two and two together. The reason why Heihachi was shocked to see Kazuya in T4 was enough to justify raiding G Corp which then confirmed his suspicion that G Corp was now a legitimate threat back then when he was still alive. Lars was born out of Heihachi doing it "for science" to prove that the Devil Gene was never really from the Mishima's from the get go. Which in turn leads to the creation of Reina in the background . Great points overall, especially regarding Asuka. I liked the story, but her part was really disappointing. I didn´t expect her to go full Angel and tag team with Jin, but at least give her more than five throwaway lines in the whole story. She is supposed to be Jin´s family from his mother´s side and the inheritor of Kazama style (you know, the "power that fosters life, and cleanses evil"), and the only living relative Jin knows that isn´t trying to kill him. Now, for the first time she canonically meets Jin and even sits in the same plane, enroute to their sacred family landmark, but doesn´t exchange a single word with Mr "I want to live because of my cherished friends and bonds." Her relevance really starts and ends with Tekken 5, and since Tekken 6 we were forced to watch this same boring comedy shtick with Lili for the past 17 years.

Just because they are related, doesn't mean that they have to care for each other. She still sees Jin as a stranger who happened to start WW3, despite being the only hope for the world. She undoubtedly understands Jin's situation, but it would seriously be awkward for them to interact with each other considering the difference of their maturity. I also doubt Asuka cares much for the spiritual side of the Kazama style teachings, considering her brash nature.

You were totally right on Jin's depression and interpreting his statement as denying his "self-ending" feelings.
Jin's goal throughout the entirety of Tekken 6 was to awaken Azazel with the idea in mind that killing the source of the Devil Gene would kill him. Jin will constantly remind people that he's ready to die in Tekken 8, with the statements decreasing in alarmingness as the story goes on (I'll send you to hell, and join you soon after. | I'll kill Kazuya even if it kills me | I'll protect my friends, even if it takes my life) but never losing that sense of a death wish.
UNTIL he meets his mother again, and asks her "Mother, do I have the right to desire life?"
To which she responds "Your own life is well worth protecting. Don't you forget it."
Only then does Jin say "if it means living with my friends, I'll never stop getting back up!". Only then does Jin cry out "I WANT TO LIVE!" when confronting Kazuya.

Asuka and Jun even have a really cool unique tag throw in Tekken Tag 2 that is both of them using the Kazama style to just throw the opponent around, I find it unbeliavable that someone as dedicated to her dojo and her fighting style just wouldn't know about her, and with that said, Asuka and Jun should've had a special intro of sorts, or at least some sort of unique dialogue, you can unlock Asuka's kimono for Jun as a customization option, it would've been cool to see them interacting in some way, Asuka deserves better than being Lili's sidekick and Feng Wei's punchbag

I agree with what you said about Asuka’s involvement in the story mode. And on top of that, in my personal opinion, my only critique of the story mode, and then possibly the greatest fumble of the story mode… was Jun’s inclusion. Like I was so excited about this game, one of the main reasons was focus on Jin’s family. Because all of the other games were always about the Mishimas, but this game was gonna focus on the family dynamic between Jin, Jun, and Kazuya. Like this was a golden opportunity for more expiration on the Kazama bloodline, and Jun and Kazuya’s history. And with Jun coming back and being a playable character, it could open the door for so many things. And all we get is two flashbacks of her, and a scene with her motivating Jin in his head, and that’s it?! Like talk about dropping the ball, she doesn’t interact with Kazuya, she doesn’t even interact with Asuka, and she doesn’t even show up in the final battle between Jin and Kazuya. This could’ve been a perfect opportunity to have all three of them on screen together, and there’s nothing. Sure she shows up over Kazuya’s unconscious body, BUT THAT’S NOT ENOUGH! You know her arcade ending? That’s what the final battle should’ve at least look like, not them being friendly, and being a happy family, but at least a powerful and impactful scene with all three of them together. Jun’s return and her inclusion in the story mode was one of this games main selling points, and after seeing what they gave us with her, I feel ripped off. In Sub-Zero’s words: such wasted potential. And don’t get me started on that little cut scene which I’m pretty sure is a retcon. But like I said, that’s my only critique of the story mode everything else was awesome.

The final battle where the music plays was easily one of the most hype moments ever for me, and I really want the song on my mp3 player.
I'm also disappointed with Asuka, and I think this game was the final straw with her for me. Like I can potentially see her doing stuff with Reina, but she's very much a Lili sidekick at this point despite being stronger, so I'm not getting my hopes up. BlazBlue will always have my heart for favorite fighting game, but Tekken is a very close second after this game.

35:38 I think the Devil Gene is tied to Azazel's chosen people (the Mishimas) and can be passed between them. Tekken 8 implies that being killed by a Mishima is the pre-requisite for getting the power to manifest but only if it's needed/desired. Heihachi never got it cuz he was the strongest man in the world then he came to despise the power because of Kazumi. Reina, on the other hand, wants the power and also has that Heihachi unfuckwittableness
EDIT: I think Tekken 8 will get another story mode to get through the Reina stuff in +-3 years (so after 2 seasons of DLC characters)

Great video, and on that last bit about "how did Reina get the Devil Gene" with Option 4 being the most likely option:
Yeah, Tekken 8’s future DLC/Tekken 9's DEFINITELY gonna need Maury Povich in there. In a franchise that has had Negan from The Walking Dead show up.

All I got is that Reina was absorbing parts of the devil gene to make either a mock version of it. While it wasn't shown too much against Jin, she was taking on a lot of those blasts and saying things like "it wasn't enough yet," until that big blast at the battlefield. I like to think that she was just gathering it up anyways

All I have to say about how they fumbled Asuka is… if they just said that Lili KNEW that if Asuka was related to the Jin from her research, Lili was literally trying to keep Asuka away from the plot because, she knew anyone caught up in the Mishima/Kazuma family bullshit ends up dead, she’d lose her rival/(girl)friend and didn’t want that to happen to her, then it would have been a good character moment. Asuka would have argued with Lili about her lineage, she’d ultimately understand it was out of concern, AND you could now reintroduce her connection to future storylines as Jin having a family member that ISN’T a huge asshole who can help purify the Devil gene. ESPECIALLY SINCE REINA [SPOILERS] HAS THE DEVIL GENE SOMEHOW!? Like, did Heihachi do it with Kazumi’s sister we don’t know about!?
All I’m saying is, ASUKA VS DEVIL REINA NEEDS TO HAPPEN.
(*and Lili needs to marry Asuka already*)

Your not actually wrong. Jin has literally said long before Tekken 8 that he would end the devil gene and himself as well which he considered tainted as a Mishima. This isn't new info from this game. He planned to take himself out along with azazel from the beginning hoping that would end the family curse too. That's why in Tekken 7 when he faced Miguel in Miguel's ending he kept saying he wanted to die and would not resist Miguel wanting to kill him for the death of his sister.
He's spent 25 years hating himself and everything to do with his family that he ran away from people who cared about him like xiaoyu to protect her when he was merely running away from life itself.
And yes jun was never dead . Harada said she was alive even before tag 2 came out like 12 years ago

I wasn't as blown away as I thought I would tbh. the visuals and major fights were awesome. but the story itself is paper thin let's be real.
    - reina being the mysterious side character until the final reveal was probably the best part of the whole story. now who is her mom >.> imma be honest, for the entire time I thought she was a clone/experiment with heihachi (and probably kazuya or kazumi) dna.
    - I am annoyed that we never saw jin meet jun IRL. I felt like that was the one thing the entire thing was leading up to (ever since tekken 3!) and in the end I was left disappointed ngl...
    - I would've liked to see some conclusions for minor characters. some loose ends they could've tied up: what is asuka's actual family situation? king appears but where are armor king and marduk?? miguel??? he would've been a perfect fit for a smaller role in this story! raven is back but where is master raven? where the hell is anna williams???
    - on a very personal note, claudio was a good fit for the sacrifice character. wasn't so popular that he'll be missed, had a great sendoff. HOWEVER the same can't be said about zafina. I hope she isn't dead and will return in the next games. her moveset was so cool

What if Asuka is going to be the one to face Reina in the next Tekken? Since Jin doesn’t have the Devil Gene or the Kazama’s cleansing powers (at least I think), what if Asuka had to unlock hers in order for Reina to be defeated?

I love Tekken, but I find it crazy that Asuka doesn’t get to do anything that isn’t involved with Lili.

My only story complaint is Asuka
Asuka is my main and fave character, I don't have any problems with her and Lili's relationship (idk what else to call it)
I know it's possible to have the Asuka and Lili dynamic as well as making Asuka matter but I've already accepted that Asuka will never have main story significance so no qualms there
What bothers me is her and Feng
As far as I know their beef never got settled so like
If you're gonna have Asuka be on the good side and Feng be on the bad side why the hell do you not have them fight? I like Leroy but like that's the one thing Asuka had that hadn't been ruined yet.
Asuka and Feng have an intro in versus modes and I'm convinced that the tekken devs just didn't notice that one of the 5 Asuka fans put that in there so they couldn't remove it (obviously I'm joking with this)
Reina being important gives me some hope tho, finally a female Tekken character will actually have story significance. It should have been Asuka but I'll take what I can get (lemme specify, a female character that isn't just a mother to a main character, I.E Jun and Kazumi)

About Reina's parents, I actually think that she's Heihachi daughter. Everyone hangs into what is the canon now, but back then in Tekken 5 not only is implied that Jinpachi's power is Devil Gene (something that was retconned later) but also that Heihachi had Lars just as a way to know if he had the Devil Gene. Tekken's storyline keeps getting retconned all the time, I don't think it would really matter at all if it was possible for Mishima's having Devil Genes and it could lay dormant, so no matter what the person did the Gene wouldn't wake even if the host was exposed to live threating situations, but it could still be passed to it's offspring.
Also, for future games, I actually would love if they decide to go all the Power Instinct/Gōketsuji Ichizoku/Groove on Fight/Matrimeele way and the next game be about the heir to the Mishima Zaibatsu. Harada trolled when he said that Heihachi had like, 18 sons across the globe, but think for a moment: in the next Tekken you could add something like 5 new characters, all of them connected to Heihachi in a way, and we already have many characters that can already claim the control of the zaibatsu: Lee's Heihachi adopted son, Lars is actually his son, Jin is his grandson, if Kazuya isn't dead he also could join the fight, Reina already is there, Kuma as his pet could also join as a comedic take on this family fighting over heritage thing... well, for me, if it works on Matrimeele, it could work here. A tournament where the winner takes the CEO chair of the Mishima Zaibatsu. For me that's a good way to keep Tekkens story going on.

Another posibility is that Reina actuali is Heihachi's kid, but her mother is someone else with the devil gene that isn't Kazuya. This is backed up by the scene with the archiologist researching the devil gene in the caves, which shows a cave painting af Azazel giving the devil gene to two seperate individuals. it can be assumed that one of these individuals is an ancestor of Kazumi with the other one forming a seperate bloodline that possesses the devil gene. Given that Lars is one of Heihachi's many illigitimate children with other women besides Kazuya, its possible Reina's mother also had the devil gene like Kazumi
weather Heihachi intended this or knew about it is unclear, but highly unlikely given Lars was sired partly for Heihachi to determine if Kazuyas evil was because of him or the devil genne Kazuya got from his mother. Its's thus unlikely he would seek out another woman with the devil gene intentionally, but still possible it could have happened.
Also, if this theory of two swpwerate bloodlines with ties to Azazel is true, said families could have maintaine ties over the generations, with Reina's mother seducing Hehachi much like Kazumi did in the hopes that reina would be powerful enough to defeat Heihachi. given we know very little of either Reina or Kazumi's history, we can only speculate at this point

I would still think Reina is Heihachi's daughter. Like Lars was fathered to see if Heihaci was capable of passing down the Devil Gene (before we found out it came from Kazumi & the Hachijo clan in T7), Reina could be aware of the cursed Mishima bloodline that us fans going back to the early days were aware of. She could know of it as misinformation like how we had no knowledge of the Hachijo clan before Tekken 7, Reina is going on false information believing as a Mishima she should have the Devile Gene.
But also consider that the devils were selected by Azazel to serve him. During the fight with Kazuya at the coliseum, Cloudio wounds Kazuya with his exorcism spell. After the fight between True Devil Kazuya & Reina, Kazuya curses Azazel through the pain he feels in the wound on his arm. I believe in that moment it is Azazel trying to escape, passing a portion of his power to bless Reina into becoming his servant aware that she wants to awaken her devil. She didn't have the Devil Gene before then like when she fought Jin in the Iron Fist Arena but she did after the coliseum & was still awoken by Kazuya's laser blast in the all out war.

  • @EnvyMizuhashi
    @EnvyMizuhashi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

The 4th point on why Reina might have the Devil Gene would be something I agree with, if it didn't disregard some of the factoids we learn about the gene from Tekken 6 to now. Tekken 8 both reestablishes and expands Azazel's purpose as the originator of the Devil Gene, as inheritors of the gene (and variations thereof) trace back to HIM. This lines up with what we know about Kazumi in 7, as apparently an entire clan can have the Devil Gene, and a variation that could respond to deadly premonitions of the future; a trait that Kazuya and Jin lack.
There could be SEVERAL families and individuals with their version of the Devil Gene, and there's no doubt that Heihachi knew that. If Reina is not the lab-child of Kazuya, then she's definitely someone who was adopted by Heihachi, realizing she's from a Devil bloodline she never knew existed. He could have trained her the Mishima style and set her up as a backup plan for when he dies. She COULD be set up as the next big villain to kill the people responsible for his death (which would be anti-climactic considering Jin and Kazuya don't have the gene anymore), but it's my hope that she's actually setting out to kill EVERY inheritor of the Devil Gene, Hachijou included. That's a comic book story arc if I ever heard one.

I enjoyed the story though I'm not a fan of jin as a character so I woulda rather this be more of team battle vs kazuya rather than focusing on Jin for most of it.
The ending slideshow also made me confused on wether zafina's dead or not
