    Fantastic! I was hoping you’d get to bucktailing for snook, having read and reread your book many years ago! I’ve been using 1/4 oz white ones I make with a 4” Berkley swimming mullet, works great, also 5/8 oz in the surf is a snook magnet also with gulp trailer. FWIW White hair, no flash, white head. I’m SE coast, snook are right at the beach lip (when the water is a little warmer than now.)

    • @hevestilmy6635
      @hevestilmy6635 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two questions: what hook size is on the bucktail? Is 1/2 oz maybe a little too heavy? I just made one with your colors in mind, 2/0 eagle claw heavy wire hook. 1/4 seems to be the heaviest I can use here on the Indian river/lagoon without constantly getting snagged. Can’t get the Berkley grub so I’m going to try with my usual 4” swimming mullet, in camo color. Cheers!

    Love your videos! I'm in Southern Cal and I pretty much never see anyone fishing bucktails on the surf or jetties, but I caught a 26" halibut in November off a 1/2 oz white bucktail with a white Zoom Super Fluke Jr on a sandy beach with tons of soft structure up close. It was your flounder videos that helped convince me to try the bucktail (since California halibut are really flounder) so now I guess it's kind of my little secret.
    One time a guy just walking on the beach, not a fisherman, came up to me and asked what I was using because he said from a distance it looked just like a live bait fish but he couldn't understand how I could just cast it hard time after time without it coming off. I guess the halibut agree.

    Its great to learn how you use the kayak to fight the fish, particularly early in the fight, to help pull the fish out of the danger zone around the mangroves by reversing your course, and to position for max efficiency to fight . Its as much a part of the repertoire as the rod and reel.

      The Hobie feels like part of my body now. Still, this fishing would be a lot easier with a trolling motor. I do a lot of pedaling and lose time retying leaders and stuff while the current pushes me down the canal. I get a workout for sure.

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing I was thinking about getting a kayak/trolling motor for the Little Peconic Bay (I'm on South Fork in Noyac). Would love to know if you think there is ample opportunity in that area of LPB for fluke, blackfish, striper, albies, etc. to make that purchase worthwhile? if you consider that area of the bay more of a dead zone, then the option would be to purchase a center console and extend my range. Do you have any thoughts about a trolling kayak? Old Town maybe? I know Hobie is not offering one at this time.

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing That’s correct John, they have hackle added (as a trailer of sorts) and because he doesn’t add trailers for snap jigging they do not have a barbed collar. As mentioned, the similarities to JP’s are in profile, head design and color. Everyone seems to make a version of the Smiling Bill, or Jetty Caster style, or spro style head - don’t see those round head (or what some old timers will call a ‘popeye’ style head) fished too often anymore. John Paduano being the exception for years. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

      I hear they are, but I wouldn't know. They are catch and release only in my county until at least June.

    Great video - Thanks!
    The weird thing is that with cold temps you’d expect to find fish in deeper water. 5-6” at the bank is really surprising. Do you suppose they are basking in the sun for warmth?

      I think they're using a current break and eddy.

    John, what size is shank on that bucktail ? 3/0?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a Gamakatsu model 604 hook, either 5/0 or 6/0. That sounds large, but the sizing is a little strange on those.

    Great video John, wondering if you have eaten any snook yet, I haven’t tried it myself but my brother said it’s one of the best fish to eat, better than grouper

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing I messaged John halkias last week, I told him my brother lives in Naples and a while back I was visiting and fished off one long piers that goes out into the gulf, I was catching nice fluke on shrimp and then threw spoons at the end of the pier and caught nice mackerel, I said I know there’s such. Great variety of fish to catch so it’s not the most popular fish to catch down there but I enjoyed it just the same

      Thankfully, what I wrote in the book applied here, because it helped me catch fish in a new environment.

      They are rare in the salt water areas that I fish. Fresh water is apparently another story.

    How do you feel about that rod for fluking?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be good for casting. It has the same 8-15# rating as the Penn rod I typically use.
