Hi Heath, The Black Fin was waiting for you to get the jig into the water. He must have been hungry. Sometimes I added a felt trailer to my jigs. You can get a sheet of felt at Walmart's craft department for $ 1.00 per sheet. It comes in several colors. Cut strips of felt about 3/8 inch wide and as long as you want. Put a dab of glue on one end and then fold it over to get about 3/8 inch overlap. ( double thick ) Put a weight on top to keep it down. After the glue dries, take an ice pick to poke a small hole in the center of the double end, for the hook. The felt gets stronger when it gets wet. It makes a great trailer and you get about 30 trailers for $1.00. Sometimes I put a colored trailer on a white bucktail jig. It's a trick I saw on TH-cam, "Fish Your Way." The Flounder and Striper fishermen use it in NY and NJ. Say "Hi" to Avi and "The Fishing Girls." Good luck and I'll talk to you on Thursday, Mickey

Too many fishing channels just show the guys fishing and they never describe what they are doing or why. For me, fishing channels are entertaining but should have some educational content included. Hi Heath. I really enjoyed this video, particularly because of your rigging technique. Love the spider hitch to no name configuration. I try to eliminate terminal tackle as much as possible, despite how easy it is to change out your lures at the snap swivel. Similar to you, I usually start my rigs with a Bimini Twist. However, I like spider hitch a lot. Seems easier to tie on the go. Can’t say enough about the white buck tail either. We’ve caught a bunch of Mahi over the last two days alone on the buck tail down in the Keys. Stay well. Jay
Hi Jay, thanks a million for watching and sharing. When I learned the spider hitch years ago, I stopped tying Bimini's, I actually this the "poor man's Bimini twist" definitely a lot easier and quicker for keeping the lines in the action. I 've used it for trolling for so long, I can't remember. It provides great shock absorbency for setting the hook. And, yes, the white bucktail is not only game changer, but it has saved many days where nothing else gets hit. Thanks again for all you do for the channel, I truly appreciate it. When out today was excited to go offshore. Right before boat ramp my boat fell off the ball lock destroying back of my truck. 🥺 always check your trailer fas-lock coupler before take off. Thank god no one else was near my car when this happen. When half sleep and too excited to go fishing make sure all hooked up right. Day ruined. Thank god boat is intact. 😇
Oh No... That's horrible to hear. I hope you are OK. Thankfully your boat is good. These are material things though. Your health and well being are what matters most.... Thanks a boat load for watching and leaving some stellar feedback. Of all the bucktail manufacturers, I do prefer SPRO... The finish, the attention to detail, the resilience, and much more, makes them what they are. I usually get them from Dick's sporting goods or a local tackle shop called Ray's Offshore Tackle that I convinced to stock them. I will definitely see what I cna do to get a small stockpile or find them on line and hook you up. Can't thank you enough for all your support of the channel and having faith in me and my info. Hi John thanks a bazillion for watching and sharing. Yes sir, you're gonna want to give troll them a try. I rarely ever use them as bottom fishing jigs. Decades ago when I started trolling them and got into the bite... I was amazed... I haven't looked back since. I've pretty much caught every type of fish in our local waters on these jigs. Great teaching! and yes.. those dual motor, radar and 60miles/hr boat can move easly 10-20 miles to find fish find birds etc.. and if none is there lets move another 40 miles !!! But from small boats is another fuel / fun / time equation... thats why I always have line in the water too captain! As always great video.. i got a couple of buck tails but Im yet to use them since Im still trusting ballyhoo rig.. will give a try next time!

Great video as usual Heath. The amount of detail you provide is amazing. I always pich up fishing nuggets from your videos...more than any other channel. Keep up the good work and the subscribers will start adding up quickly. I always tied spro directly to main line but noticed i was getting a lot of line spin and was going to add a spro swivel to keep it from turning but ill try your method to avoid the hardware. Now that we're on the other side of covid, and fully vaccinated, let me know if you want to run offshore one day. I live in and run out of Boca so im sure our paths have crossed. I can handle the bigger seas of the Gulfstream with ease and always looking for another fishing partner. Tight lines and all the best to Avi and your family.

I agree hopefully someday soon we'll figure something out about doing a trip, as we are finally on the downside of the hill. I always try to avoid hardware... But sometimes you can't, I you're constantly getting line twist I'd go with the swivel. If you're using spinners, they are always coiling your line, especially when reeling in against pressure of a fighting fishing. Thanks again for everything you do. See you out on the water soon. Great content heath … your material is spot on. Heath why this combination of a spider knot/no name knot vs just tying an Alberto knot or FG knot directly from leader to braid? A couple of other quick questions sir: do you ever put a Bonita strip on the jig head? It just looks like it needs something extra lol. Lastly can you tell me what’s your best way of bleeding a tuna? Thanks a million for watching and asking some great questions. I use spider hitch to no-name on mono to fluoro, when it comes to braid to fluoro I'll use an alberto knot. I stay away from the FG, too much for too little. Next, the jig doesn't need any bait on it, I've caught more fish throughout my life on a plain white bucktail than anything else (bait or lure). Lastly, to bleed tuna, I reach under the gill plate and yank out as gills as I can, these are just like jugular veins and the fish will bleed out quickly. Hope all this helps. Thanks a million for watching and sharing. I've said this for decades that little white bucktail jig is the most dangerous bullet you can put in any gun. If I had one lower and only one lower could choose for the rest of my life it would be the white bucktail jig. Super versatile you can do any type of fishing with it and everything in the ocean eats it. I've caught everything from mahi, tuna, barracuda, kingfish, Cobia, sailfish snapper, amberjack, grouper African pompano... Pretty much everything the list is endless. Heath, great info as always big fan of the spro jig and the channel. Ive been tying these to my main line just using a clinch knot and trolling them that way and just got sooo many line twists. Does the spider hitch and no name take the line twists out? Ive been thinking of using a swivel but wanted to keep the tackle stream lined. Because of the line twists Ive just been using my spro bucks as a caster on weed patches.
Thanks a million for watching and sharing. Honestly, I would stay away from swivels... But if you're consistently getting line twist, It's probably in your best interest to try it. I hit weed patches with the bucktails all the time.... I always have one locked and loaded.... when I troll by if I see mahi, I'll pitch it to them and try to get hooked up before the trolling rigs swoop by the patch. Everything eats a white bucktail jig. Line twist occurs on spinners, because you're always, well, spinning the line (no pun intended) especially when you have pressure from a fish on the other end.... @@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing A little trick I use for line twist. Since it’s probably a good habit to re-ty. I let out about 150 to 200 ft of line with nothing tied to it. Let it troll a few minutes then reel it in. The drag from the water will untwist the line.

I am a huge fan sir I'm all the way from the Philippines and I was enjoying every content while learning, I specially enjoyed the slow pitch jigging methods and tricks you though me, I just hope someone can give me a solid slow pitch gear set so that i could catch more

Yep you can do that. And just tie it on with a basic clinch knot.
Hi Heath. I was just viewing this video and agree that the white jig is a great jig to have in the fishing arsenal but, I was a little confused as to not have some type of barrel swivel on the business end of things. Wouldn't the line after trolling get so twisted up that you will have to spend a very long time untwisting it? I normally have a barrel swivel on it. Thank you for posting and providing lots of details. It is appreciated.
No swivel needed. Jig trolls straight as an arrow. I ha e loads of videos trolling with it. The only lures I troll that spin erratically are Clark & drone spoons. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching

Yup answered my question on the video but do you ever use heavier jigs like 2-3 oz?
My go to bucktail jigs sizes are 3/4 & 1/2 ounce. I never go bigger than one ounce. When you're trolling they won't dive down much more than 12 inches below the surface
What about using a rapala knot to attach the lure and give better action?
Whatever your favorite knot is, will work 😁

A top shot is a long leader that you put at the end of your braided line that provides for shock absorbency so that you don't yank the hook out of the fish's mouth when it strikes. When you're using braid you want at least a 50 ft top shot or shock cord the names are interchangeable but it's essentially just a leader when I'm using 20 lb for 12 lb braid I use 20 lb fluorocarbon leader as my entire top shot. I want to drag some 1.5 oz bucktail with a Penn 9 foot medium hevy rod and a Shimano Spheros 6000 40 reel and an 80 leader, what can you tell me... 😊
Personally I go with the 3/4 ounce bucktails for trolling. However, if you've already got the 1.5 definitely give it a try. I e never fished with a 9 foot rod, but I'm sure it will do the job. Should give you some good shock absorbency due to the extra length. Troll at about 5 - 6 mph. Should pick up tuna maybe mahi.

What is your opinion on 2oz and 4oz bucktails?
I haven't had any success with those sizes for the tactics I apply them to. The largest I go is 1 oz, but that's last resort. My favorite size is 3/4, gets the most strikes.
