Passo Pordoi (Arabba) - Cycling Inspiration & Education

  • Nestled between the Gruppo del Sella and the Queen of the Dolomites, the 3,343 metre high Marmolada, the Passo Pordoi links the Val Cordevole in the east with the Val di Fassa to the west. Although relatively short at just 9.4km dig a little deeper and you’ll quickly realise that the Pordoi has an enviably rich cycling heritage. First used in the 1940 Giro d’Italia it’s witnessed more race action than many of its peers put together, with monuments at the top dedicated to great Italian champions Fausto Coppi and Gilberto Simoni reminding you of its history.
    What’s nice about the Pordoi is that it allows you to enjoy the journey, with a constant gradient hovering from 6-8% and never tipping beyond double figures, a rarity in itself in the Dolomites. Settle down and find your rhythm as you climb beyond the trees and towards its summit at 2,239m elevation. But the story doesn’t end there, oh no, with 33 marked hairpins in less than 10km this gives the ascent from Arabba one of the best ‘bend to length’ ratios in the business with a whopping 3.5 turns per kilometre. Now if that’s not a good excuse to ride it I don’t know what is!
    Start: Arabba
    Length: 9.4km
    Summit: 2,239m
    Elevation gain: 638m
    Average gradient: 6.8%
    Max gradient: 9.7%
    Climb ridden in September

    Lovely, just lovely. Getting the impression that it's a good first climb for those who've never tried their luck with a mountain?

    • @TheColCollective
      @TheColCollective  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gr0bbelaar If you're in the area then it'd be a good climb to start with although it can be busy and if you do fancy a few more climbs then the Dolomites could be quite hard going for someone new to the mountains. Climbs can be changeable in gradient and steep (well into double figure gradients) which means they can be harder to master and get into a good rhythm on. Don't let that put you off though, you've got to start somewhere! Take your time, make sure you have a low enough gear, enjoy the day and go ride! That 's what I say :-)

    Ohhhh new bike!! Looking fresh! I jumped ship from Cannondale and bit on the new 2016 Giant TCR Advanced SL 2.... the bike is definitely better than I am, but I'm enjoying it :) I have the option to stick with the Mid-Compact it came with or move to a Compact, not sure what I want to do!!! I came from a compact and am scared I will miss it!

    • @TheColCollective
      @TheColCollective  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +drewmorgan Give the mid compact a go, I reckon moving forward that ratio really will be winner for all terrains.

    • @drewmorg.

    Another wonderful production! The Pordoi is on my todo list.
    What time of year did you film this climb? I can't be over there to do the Maratona or other events in mid summer but will be planning a trip for 3 weeks to ride in the Dolomites. What would be the best time of year to do this to avoid high traffic times and get the best possible weather and open roads? I was Thinking late May - early June or through the middle of September. Any tips would be appreciated. I'm coming from Canada so I want to make the most of the trip and do as many climbs as I can. Thanks Mike... appreciate your work.

    • @TheColCollective
      @TheColCollective  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jonathan Goldman Hi Jonathan, we rode this at the start of September. Conditions are always changeable day to day in the mountains so it's hard to accurately predict. Late May/early June and mid September are good times. It may not be as hot as in the peak of summer but the traffic will be a lot lighter. July and especially August is very busy throughout the Dolomites. Personally I'd like to get out there right at the start of the season so that you can ride it with snow banks at the side of the road still. On a blue sky day it'll blow your mind! Ride safe and enjoy! Mike

    • @TheColCollective
      @TheColCollective  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Phaidrus It was around 15 degrees C at the bottom and 10 degrees C at the top. Wish it was blue sky, the landscape is so dramatic on a clear day. Have to go back! :-)
