The greatest earth bender joined by the cabbage merchant. Perfect.
Love how all voice actors and actors just seem to know each other. I'm currently studying to become a church organist, and my teacher also just seems to know every other organist in the country, well, not really, but she knows dozens of people I've mentioned to her, since I visit a lot of churches with my grandmother, but also fits well with Avatar and Bumi saying "All old people know each other, don't you know that".
Apparently today, February 17th, is National Cabbage Day.
This was destiny.
I DIDNT EVEN KNOW TILL TODAY IT WAS PERFECT!!!!
Divine timing michaela! 👌🏾
@@michaelamostlyHaha, make sure to let James know too.
What the frick... I got chills reading this man.
The universe set this all up in advance..."Thank you, the universe!"
Okay, getting Azula was cool, getting Zuko was cool, getting Sokka was cool...but she got the Cabbage Guy, we're dancing with the stars now
Agreed! And I love how knowledgeable he was about the show and the voice acting. I had no idea John DiMaggio (who voiced Bender) and Tara Strong (who's voiced pretty much everyone, from Dill Pickles, Harley Quinn, Bubbles from Powerpuff girls...) were two of the Ember Island players.
10:08 Zuko: "Did Jet just... die?"
Sokka: "You know it was really unclear."
One of the best moments in the entire series.
That's unclear buddy.
This is THE best way a show has ever recapped a show ever
Avatar being so meta. It's crazy and I love it XD
You can tell the writers had SO much fun with this one too. Getting to parody their own show and poke fun at their own tropes (with a few playful jabs at the network) was clearly so enjoyable.
@@jbearclowater not only is it peak but it shows us fire nation propaganda
I know the reason Toph is portrayed as a big buff dude is because that was the original intended design, but in my mind, I like to think it's because none of the Fire Nation soldiers wanted to admit they were schooled by a tiny blind girl.
Isn't that how most propaganda works?
In the Doctor Who audio drama jubilee, an alternate fascist UK was helped by the Doctor to save earth from the daleks, and in the future, they are embarrassed by the 6th’s Doctor attire, so all the movies they make have the Doctor looking and acting more like a cool action hero
MY CABBAGES!!!! 🥬
TOPH AND THE CABBAGE MERCHANT IN THE SAME ROOM?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YYEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not only that, but he made some delicious cabbage cookies from the official avatar cookbook. What a legend! 🥹
NOOOOOOOOO! ONLY ONE EPISODE LEFT ON THIS ENTIRE SERIES! 😭 PLEASE BRING IN MARK HAMILL!
I mean... it's the finale, but there are still four episodes left 😂 I don't think she's gonna make a video of all of them in one go. It makes sense to make 4 videos and end the series when the live action is out
Wow, you really outdone yourself with the guests! The one and only Cabbage Merchant, that's better than anyone could ask!
"My Cabbages!" - a humble merchant, and the founder of Cabbage Corps.
I’m a stage manager and every time I see this episode I think the same thing “the theater has a BUDGET!” 😂
lolol
In this video, Toph reacts to Toph reacting to Toph. With a strong hint of the legendary cabbage
I just realized when Zuko asks if Jet died, that's actually when he, sort of, finds out that Jet died.
In my opinion this is the episode with the life changing journey of toph and zuko.
The part in the break where they are talking together and toph comforting zuko by saying his uncle would be proud of him for being with them is one of my favourite moments in the series. And it is also in a way toph doing a favour to iroh by taking his role. Cause normally he is the one guiding/comforting zuko and now toph takes that role in a way.
It's one of Toph's best moments period.
The compassion, the encouragement, the tiniest hint of envy--because she wishes she had an uncle like Iroh, it's all perfect.
I really wish this dynamic had been explored more.
@@jordancampbell8597 "...because she wishes she had an uncle like Iroh." we all wish we had someone like Uncle Iroh.
I have NEVER noticed John Dimaggio (the voice of Bender in Futurama) was the voice of Ember Island Toph. That is amazing casting.
This is how the cabbage merchant became rich in Kora, he created recipes that all required cabbages.
just absolutely monopolized the cabbage industry
Didn't he own a car company in Korra?
"HONORRRR" - Zu Tzu, the Art of War. The hat that Aang wears is the hat that Xu wore! Though the Play Azula uses blue ribbons to represent real Azula's blue firebending, to kill Zuko, the playwright interestingly used orange-red flames to engulf Zuko instead of her blue fire. The yawning during the scene with the drill was a reference to how fans initially thought that episode was boring, although I thought the drill looked very cool and it being destroyed would of course be very helpful when convincing the Earth King. Sokka offering his actor (Play Sokka is Scott Menville, Robin in Teen Titans) advice is a reference to the way Jack added his own input to Sokka's lines, which changed the original serious Sokka to the fun-loving Sokka of today!
Zuko's "Did Jet just...die?" Is a lot less funny when you realize that the last time Zuko saw Jet he was getting arrested by the Dai Li. So Zuko probably just found out Jet died right at that moment. And it’s interesting how Zhao wanted to be remember in history, but, if we take this play into account, Zhao isn’t even mentioned, all the stuff he did, capturing the Avatar, the north pole, they are remembered as stuff that Zuko did. Zhao is only referenced through Play Aang holding him as a figure. So Zhao did everything to be remembered in history, but he was completely forgotten.
One casting choice I found hilarious in this episode was the actress for Suki, Jennie Kwan, voiced Ember Island Yue
It is my belief that this is the only episode of ATLA that M. Night Shyamalan has ever seen.
None of the sources for this play wanted to admit they got beat up by a small blind girl, so they said it was a really buff guy.
thought they were “special” cookies at first and then realized they were actual cabbage cookies
Omg!! This might be the best guest yet! 😱 The cabbage merchant himself and HE EVEN MADE CABBAGE COOKIES!! 😍😍😍 perfect eposode too, ember island players was one of my faves!
I always liked the theory that the people who were interviewed for this play didn't want to admit to losing to a 12 year old girl so they all made up a big tough dude instead. Although I think it's a nod to the fact Aang's earth bending teacher was supposed to be a man originally. (Sud, who they made Roku's teacher instead. He's the earth bender at the beginning of every episode).
TWO Earth Kingdom legends on the same screen is too much earthiness to handle! I agree with James that it was cool he came back to voice the merchant's son in LoK, and how the merchant went on to straight up create an automobile corporation! And the cabbage merchant being a Zutara fan was not something I had on my 2024 bingo! So the one who pitched this episode was writer Tim Hedrick, and he is referenced with the playwright Pu-on Tim. Watching a comically inaccurate play about their own adventures was based off the 2004 book Days of Magic, Nights of War by Clive Barker. The action sequences between Azula and Zuko, and then Actress Aang and Actor Ozai, were inspired by Shaolin stage shows and Chinese acrobatic performances.
And yes, Play Toph was John DiMaggio (what a world that Jake the Dog was also TOPH) and Play Zuko was Dante's older brother Derek. But it gets better than that, after Aang is shot with lightning, the actresses who portray Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee assume a pose used in Charlie's Angels...they really are Ozai's Angels! The kid dressed as Aang who said Zuko's scar was on the wrong side was fittingly Zach, the one who voiced the play version of Yue is fittingly/ironically Jennie Kwan, Play Katara is Grey DeLisle, and the reaction of the characters at the end when they're walking away was the writers' jab at M Night's Last Airbender! Yes, Bryan said this in the episode's commentary that the "But the effects were decent" was a jab at Shyamalan, saying "Not that we don't think it's gonna be awesome, but, I don't know, I think that was their little jab at the movie".
This one has always stood out to me as being a brilliant way to do a recap episode. Right before the end, you need to prep people with all this information, so rather than a simple clip show, you create something that basically parodies everything that came before it and becomes one of the most beloved episodes of the entire series! So good. Thanks James!
You're such a good TH-camr that it feels like I've been watching this channel for years. It's going to feel weird when this series ends and there's no more Michaela content
I would hope she continues to make content
Maybe she’ll do reactions for the Live Action show.
I vote she does korra next or atleast the live action series
Toph is in Korra, so maybe outside of the LA she can continue with Korra
@@falconeshield yeah but that's not her voice and also this is sponsor so who knows the extension of this partnership.
Oh man! James Sie: The legendary Cabbage man!!! I’m so glad you got him on asa guest! So funny he made the cabbage cookies! That’s on brand! Looking forward to seeing him on the live action series! 🥬
Omg the cabbage merchant returning for this reaction is literally the best surprise ever!!!
So a lot of the Zuko and Iroh scenes in the play don’t have any witnesses, and because Zuko doesn’t know the play’s happening, the only possible conclusion to draw is that the playwright visited Iroh in prison to research their story.
And Iroh listened to everything the playwright said and went “yes, that’s exactly what happened!”
I hope you and the rest of the voice actors get a call to cameo in the later seasons of the Netflix series, I think it’d be hilarious if it was a role in the ember island players!
James Sie! The voice of purveyor of cabbages! And Jackie Chan from Jackie Chan Adventures, Monkey from Kung Fu Panda: Legend of Awesomeness!
As well as freaking Hojo from FF7 Remake! My mind was blown when I heard that!
James Sie’s energy is so fun. I love It!
No way you didn't put James in the title/thumbnail!!! what a pleasant surprise :)
8:24 Aang is in touch with his feminine side: Avatar Kyoshi, Avatar Yang Cheng, & Aang had come back from the spirit world to use energy bending to restore Avatar Korra's Earth, Fire, & Water bending
Ember Island Players definitely one of the most hilarious episodes ever
ALSO YES, PLEASE DO CALL OUT THE AMAZING RELATIONSHIP DYNAMIC OF ZUKO AND TOPH. They have a lot in common, and can relate to each other, but also play off each other in the most amazing way, and also the amount of hilarious chaos that would ensue between them is great
Normally I’m against recap episodes, cuz they end up just being a clip show. But I absolutely love Ember Island Players because of how the characters get to watch themselves on stage. It just ends up feeling more like a roast than a recap. LOL XD
At 9:25, I know it isn’t shown but I can never not laugh at Toph’s 😀reaction to seeing her character scream. When I went to see Godzilla 2014 with my friends, they told me I had the same reaction anytime Godzilla roared. XD
Well, this has been one wild ride. But next time marks the beginning of the end.
"Well, this has been one wild ride. But next time marks the beginning of the end" -- "This is not the end. This is not the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning." --Millennium, 1989
Idk why, but the cabbage merchant voice actor being on this episode made me the most emotional 😭 ❤❤❤
Toph cause it soulds like tough!
You actually brought on the cabbage merchant. Im so happy :) ty for all the laughs cabbage merchant
“Is this fucking play about us?”
L O L
I wish the gang would've talked about how Zuko knows Jet
OH MY GAAAAAAAAAAAWD THE ACTUAL BEST GUEST TO HAVE OTHER THAN MARK HAMILL! HOLY!
He's technically the first person from the live action series to be on here.
She is literally perfection ❤
You know in the rift the cabbage man opened a cabbage shop and sold cabbage cookies lmao
The first time I watched this episode when the Toph stage actor said they release a sonic wave and then screamed I also screamed.. of laughter. I nearly displaced a rib I laughed so hard. Easily the funniest thing in the whole show.
Holy crap she got Jackie Chan [from Jackie Chan Adventures] himself, this is awesome.
“…And a surprisingly knowledgeable merchant of cabbage.”
Me: THAT’S OUR BOYYYYYYY!
😭 🥹 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
James needs to be in everything.
The beginning of the end, lol, literal but sounds dark, and still in a cheery voice
My favorite line of the episode is easily the Toph actor going "I release a sonic wave from my mouth" then screams. I also love Toph's reaction to her character too and how she was the only one who fully liked how she was casted.
Wow! Never thought the cabbage merchant would be such a chill hang! This might be my favorite so far :)
This episode is still one of my favorites from Book 3, that play was much better parody than that movie that came out in 2010, I forget what it's called
i feel like the... movie, did u say? ...anywho, i feel like that thing, watched "The Ember Island Players" then gave it, The Ember Island Players treatment.
@@SirChaosS I wouldn't doubt that except they went in a worse direction.
Looking forward to seeing James Sie in the live action! And I hope you somehow get Zach Tyler Eisen or Mae Whitman for the finale!
OMG I’m so happy to see the Cabbage Merchant again! He was truly one of my favorite running gags in the series and I can’t wait to see him reprise his role again in the Live Action series.
MY CABBAGES!!!!!!!!
I don't want this series to end and now the tears are making my tea salty. 😭🍵
It is still SO wild to me that some random purveyor of cabbages wound up getting such a cult following to the point where one of the biggest cast announcements for the live action was the RETURN of James Sie as his character from the animated show.
Seriously, reminds me of how the Janitor in Scrubs was just intended to be a short one-off kind of foil to JD, but he was so popular that he became a major character all the way through.
Cabbage Man may have not had much time in the animated show, but he built an EMPIRE in the comics and into Korra and we love him :D
I have the cookbook!!!! It's such a good read and they even added lore it's so cool!
The Ember Island Players had a stellar voice cast.
This episode has everything. Comedy, Drama, heart warming moments, cabbages…. We are not worthy 😂
Man, I seriously hope that Toph brings on Aang and Katara before the end of her series.
I know it's probably not a realistic request, but I would love for Mark Hamill to join her for one of these.
@@jbearclowater That’d be awesome!
14:18 had to rewind that part a couple of times cause it sounded like Aang said, “f*king idiot!”… I was like, I don’t remember THAT being in the episode
I didn't know that was John DiMaggio! Knowing Ember Island Player Toph is Bender is awesome!
She's so gorgeous
My name’s Toph bc it sounds like tough. That gets me every time. These videos are awesome
You should continue avatar-sequel content beyond reviewing the show and the live action. I love watching your vids and your energy is contagious! ❤️
0:19 OUR CABBAGE MAN! How fitting he joins you for his character’s last reference in this series!
I've seen a TH-cam from Cabbage Merchant's first con, but otherwise not a whole lot from him, and there wasn't a whole lot of him in that video either. I absolutely adore him now. I liked him then, but I love him now. He's great. ❤❤
Oh man I am so happy right now! Cabbage Man is on Tea Time With Toph!
AMAZING!!! THE CABBAGE MAN!!😭 the man the legend and his cabbages!😭😭
Damn this means the live action series is right around the corner.
yep. Thursday. can't believe it. 5 days away.
6:39 Wait what? i didn´t notice that 😂 this is incredible
omg that would be amazing if there was an ember island cameo, for the live action
She even got Cabbage man in here 🔥🔥🔥
I had no idea how much I needed this. This is LEGENDARY!!!
So excited to see James in live action! Also, his book, All Kinds of Other, is fantastic. That man can do it all: write, sell cabbages, yell about his cabbages. Everything.
I know toph is played a huge dude in the ember players but i hope the netflix version has the og cast involved somehow
Hold on! They should do a puppet show and get all the original VAs to do the puppet voices
Michaela could be Aang, and Zack could be the stagehand (with a more significant role) and then Dwayne Johnson can play Toph
When One Piece did the joke with the fake straw hats, they had the cast swapped. That can be how these jokes are maintained
Awesome! great guest!
I can't believe we're here! just the last stretch before we're in the live action!
I'm gonna take this oportunity to say Michaela, that is has been a pleasure hanging out with you through these videos!
whatever comes next for you and this channel, I'm excited for it!
You did it. The MAD actually did it!
ATLA: Gets young voice actors that end up becoming iconic.
Also ATLA: Gets iconic voice actors to play parody versions of the main cast.
Hilarious.
Loving, loving, loving the series Michaela. Can't wait to see how it goes to the end!
I love when a series is able to see and make fun of itself and its weaknesses. To me, ATLA is a perfect series, but I have favored and less favored episodes, and I like how for episodes like The Great Divide, which is great, but a bit more bland than most episodes, they made a joke regarding it.
I also love how they took all of the characters and gave them extreme qualities, and how the real characters reacted to them. Especially Toph reacting to Play Toph, that was hilarious😂
"I release a sonic wave from my mouth." 😆😆😆
I know you're doing this as a special occasion, but please continue to make more content. Even if it's once a week or whenever you have time. You have a great channel here.
are we seriously going to just gloss over that Tara Strong, the VA Queen hersef, did Play Azula? and how am i just hearing about this TODAY?! cause, y'know *sniff, i've sorta been a fan of hers since The Powerpuff Girls!
12:43 Fun fact Zuko has never said Toph’s name in the original series.
13:11 sokka & robin!
This is the GREATEST CLIP (ish) EPISODE EVER
The best meta joke is flying past the Great Divide without further comment
WE GOT THE CABBAGE MERCHANT ZUTARA NATION STAND UP
Ember island, the calm before the storm
Ahhhhhh so post live action premier y’all did this I love you guys that’s awesome
The community needs a avatar the last puppet bender reaction after you finish book 3
Keep up the good work, machaela! Having these guests as well is a smart marketing. Very impressive!🍻💯 P.S. i need that book as well!💯🙏🏼🙌🏼
I love the theory that the reason toph’s ember island character is a giant dude is because no one wanted to admit they got beaten by a little blind girl
"The scar's NOT on the wrong side!!"
best episode with the best characters reacting to it! win/win xD
Very nice! Cabbage cookies? Brilliant idea!
0:36 I’m even wearing my cabbage shirt today! It’s a different one though. It’s from Hot Topic, and it’s like an advertisement that reads “World Famous Ba Sing Se Cabbage”
noooooooooooo way!!!!!! cabbage man!!!! we love you
He's mastered cabbage bending now that he baked the cabbage cookies
