There are truly some youth orchestras out there that are world-class. What a masterful performance. Take any orchestra in the world and you won't hear this played any better or with more sentimentality, only equaled. Absolutely gorgeous.
I remember having to learn this piece for my orchestration class in college. I was up around midnight and heard it for the first time. Needless to say I was absolutely floored. Such a beautiful piece, I'll always cherish it.
Grainger and this orchestra produced a controlled mellowness..I am sure Grainger would be more than pleased if he had been able to hear youth from his native country perform this composition so well.
this song always moves me to tears. I'm not british, it's not in my heritage yet it goes right to my heart, and i suspect most hearts.what a great group of young musicians. Thank you
@@georgebarnes8163 The tune is a folk song collected in County Derry, Ireland, in the early 19th century. Like with most folk songs, the tune's authorship is unknown.
I have strong connection with this song. While a Kid I had opportunity to play this song in a church's orchestra, I never forgot this melody and this arrangement performaded by Grainger sound perfect
This is a beautiful piece of music performed by gifted and talented young musicians. I was familiar with the song when I used to hear this played as the intro to a very old television show " Make Room for Daddy " featuring Danny Thomas. I then heard this song in the movie " Memphis Belle "
Oh my goodness!! This splendid melody, set by Percy Grainger, in the hands of these magnificent musicians literally tugs at the soul, and lifts the spirit in such an indescribable way, that emotion becomes overwhelming. The song "Danny Boy" was popular during WW2, and I was named after the title. There were five other Dannys in my first grade class, so as it was impressive then, this version crowns them all. The words are significant as well. Thank you very much indeed for posting this fine video for many of us to enjoy after the event, and long into the future.
Published as "Irish Tune from County Derry" - there are several formats for piano, wind ensemble, and modern arrangements. Be careful which you buy. It sounds like we are hearing the "string orchestra" version here, but he added the horn parts from the full orchestra or band version in on the final line. I disagree. Without the conductor AYO wld not hv sounded so good. There were many hours of rehearsal and practice guided by the conductor before the actual performance if u know how they work.
Non, non ! 😴💤💤 C'est une ballade ! ce n'est pas une pièce symphonique. Tempo pour une ballade s.v.p... Ni largo, ni lento, mais andante ou moderato... No, no ! 😴💤💤 It's a ballad ! this is not a symphonic piece. Tempo for a ballad, please... 😉 nor largo, nor lento, but andante or moderato...
Does anyone else tear up just a little bit hearing this piece? This American man does.
Same (Maltese).
This Japanese man also does
Me too. This korean man does...
I'm drinking right now and if I continue watching, the tears will flow like Niagra. Later. I promise.
The song starts at 3:58
thanks! I was beginning to wonder.
You're welcome! :)
Thanks... wouldnt have had the patience without the heads up..

Something wrong with. The sound system query
By far the best orchestral version I've heard. Also makes abundently clear what a difference an amazing conductor makes.

After a loss of a brother , DAN, that performance was moving and at the same time , soothing.
Luck be with you all!

It is most certainly not a British song. Anything but.
This is an Irish song
@@saraho92 how is it not ? It was written by an Englishman in the British isles . Muppet.danny boy
@@fatshamer6349 Written by English lawyer Fredrick Weatherly who never set foot in Ireland, so how is it Irish?

The band played this piece in the 1953 film _Titanic._
Se uno vuole tentare di capire COS'È la musica...l'interpretazione.... la direzione... beh ascolti QUESTO. Commovente davvero. W VOI!!!
Londonderry air superb
Gorgeous!
One of the most moving tunes ever.
Magnificent!
Exquisite
Beautiful.
Yes I do. Even as a Dutchman
beautiful performance.
I'm wondering how I appear to hear a split Horn note towards the end, in what appeared to be a string arrangement.
r/PieceoftheDay featured this piece today, October 25th, 2021.
Just beautiful. How can it be improved? I don't know.
Love it! 🤔
Brilliant!
Intro sounds like something by Dimitri Tiomkin
even BBC believe it's derry
Doire !
That's because this instrumentation by Percy Grainger is called "Irish Tune from County Derry".
Myles Lawless piss off! You don't all Dublin 'Baile atha Cliath' do you!
I miss the 27th lancers
The memphis belle x
🔥
Should have played Colonial Song, Grainger's anthem for Australia
Song at 4:10
5:06 sounds like chorus You Raise Me Up
PLEASE! How can I find the scores??? I´m looking for this arrangement like crazy, but I can not find this anywhere. Who can help me? ;-)

!
Well, but at bar nine Grainger says in a box, “keep up the tone” and they let off the tone. No?
or is it.
Colman Reynolds yes it is
Beautiful arrangement and playing.
Has a similar feel to the wonderful scene from Brassed Off.

Nice but I lack percussions to give a dramatic tone and less nostalgia...why not try ??
Too much talking,
Very possibly the worst piece of conducting in the history of orchestrated music. Congratulations to the AYO on a superb performance.

40 👎 solless people with no emotion ...How can that be ..
Dany Boy, Irish song that I came to love, doesn’t sound good on orchestra. The music of it get lost with so many instruments.
English song.

it's supposed to be about a mother visiting her young son Danny's grave, Danny was killed by the English. it's supposed to be slow.

Beautiful.
