Great video - thank you. I'm sitting here with a full tank and 3/4 on the meter and I bet there are some hoses in mine that looked like yours! I don't smell any gas but I'm going to open this can of worms next, and your video will prove to be a huge time saver. Sorry Part 2 got eaten by your phone :(
Thanks Ken. Just about to pull mine out (tomorrow). Never a fun job and those filler screws usually rust solid. Worse, in the UK, the hole in the wing for the filler rusts even faster! Thanks for popping up on 80-90 from time to time - Covkid :D
Great video Ken! And you've got a great 'camera-man' there! Well done! :) I've been having gas leaks forever, whenever I fill up< but have been reluctant to try to drop the tank to get at the likely culprits on top of the tank (the rubber connector hoses on an '85 Westfallia). Could not find any detail on what the cross-over tube, hoses, & connectors were like. Now it looks doable. Can't wait for Part 2!
Great video! Can you share a link to part 2? - can't seem to find it. A question for an early model vanagon, '82 - should stay/replace with the stock 70mm that fits existing metal filler neck or swap (and source a plastic filler neck) to later model tank? I heard they are a small nightmare to install compared to later model. I also understand fuel outlet would be larger and likely a better fit for updated post (metal) fuel filter. I'm stuck on determining which is the best for performance and ease of install. Thanks for the feedback.
Part 2 got eaten by my phone after we recorded it, so there is no part 2 at this moment (in the future). If you have an air cooled Vanagon you could change to the plastic filler neck. However they are getting difficult to find right now and you can't buy them new. The last good used one I had, I sold for $125. The outlet is larger, so you just delete the fuel filter before the pump and install one after the pump. If you have a diesel you must stay with the metal filler neck as the diesel nozzle is larger than the gas so it won't work in a gas filler neck (all plastic ones). You can contact me through our website at www.vanagain.com if you have any further questions. We would love to help you. Ken
Brilliant video Ken, I've got a 1991 single cab pickup which I'm converting from petrol to diesel as there was no motor in it when I bought it, I've fitted the AAZ 1.9 TD motor with a 5 speed box, slowly but surely going through everything on the truck and I would imagine the tank will need changing. Just one question, will I need to keep the two breather tank's, the clear plastic tank's when I replace the new tank as I'm swapping from petrol to Derv?
Can someone help me with the tube thats on top of the expansiontank at the driver side. At the end there is a v shape rubber. I misted that one on how and where i should put it back??
@@VanAgain I would also be interested in that as I have heard you should do those pipes when you do the tank. Thanks Ken - you are the MAN! Always fast shipping. Best in the biz!
Hello, I was leaking gasoline on my VW T3. I have disassembled the tank and I found all the rubber gaskets damaged. Disassemble it and place the rubber gaskets, it is very easy. The problem is to connect all the tubes in the tank before putting it in place. Especially the one that goes from one side of the tank to the other. Can I place it as it was initially? Or can I place it under the pipes and cables that pass through that area.? On youtube I cannot find videos that explain the placement of the repaired or new tank. Can you help me find a video? I have work stopped. Thanks a lot. I write to you from Spain.
@@VanAgain Thanks for answering my question I know the hook. I will try to connect the plastic cross tube to the tank before placing it. I will need help from a colleague. I just won't be able to do it. One more question, do the tubes that are hooked on the top of the tank have to be resistant to gasoline? I do not think so.
Hey Ken, Just a thought on your Part 2 that got eaten. I had some pictures that I'd taken with my phone and could not find. Come to find out that Google in it's infinite wisdom, unbeknownst to me, had taken it off my camera and placed it in my account up on the cloud...Have you checked there? Or other possible culprits (iDrive, etc?)? I still haven't dropped my tank, other stuff keeps getting in the way... But hopefully in the next week or 2... Cheers, jt
Unless you put many coats of paint in that U shaped 'valley' in the top of the tank, you will be replacing the tank again in under 10 years due to corrosion pinholes and a strong smell of fuel and leaks when filling the tank. its basically a shit design which holds dirt and damp and rusts away again if you don't protect it.
I understand what you are saying. However the aftermarket tanks are actually pretty well treated. I have had them come here after 10 years and they are still in fine shape. I have never painted one of them and the vans I am seeing are from the North East and Canada.
Thank you bro impact driver helps with the Philips heads a lot
Love your assistant....seems quite entertained by dads humor:)

Very nice video. Always nice to see how to work on my Westy.
Very informative, and great tips.

Thank you thank you thank you man. I've got two 84s, ones been done before I bought but other needs dropped and vent lines replaced.
We can supply all of the parts you need to get the job done. Feel free to call on us!
Thanks I have the parts and I'm doing it this week
When I replaced my tank, I coated the new one with rubberized undercoating.
Was there ever a part 2?
This completely helped me out
My phone ate it. We recorded it but it somehow got erased from the phone
Thank's Ken, I't was a bit of a grey area but appreciate your input.

I would say yes to keeping the plastic expansion tanks. Replace the metal tank and all seals and hoses though.

Have you a video on replacing coolant pipes ..?.
Do you mean the long ones underneath?

There is a metal hook on the frame above the coolant pipes. You need to thread the plastic cross over pipe above everything and hook it on the hook.

@@jesusramonmenchacabenito4188 Yes they should be resistant to gasoline. The fumes from the gasoline will kill normal rubber.
Has anyone told you that you look like Alex Jones? Haha
Thanks for the video. Very useful!
I can’t find part 2. 🥺 Where it is?
My phone ate it.
Can I put the Sender unit wiring wrong In?
+Κώστας Λεούσης nope it only plugs in one way.
Van-Again cool 😎 i asked because I will forget the question untold Christmas 😂by the way the smurfs hate you because you destroyed smurf village 🤣
Muuchas gracias
How many feet of new fuel line should I buy before starting?
We have a kit that comes with all of the fuel hose, clamps, seals, etc that you will need. www.vanagain.com
I cannot find part 2 ?
I did a video on installing the level sender. Part 2 got ate by my phone
Great stuff.
Where is part 2??
+Dylan Jones sadly my phone ate part 2. We recorded it and saved it and when I went to upload it, it was gone 😥
Gutted.
Great stuff though
+Dylan Jones my daughter was really upset. We will do another tank at some point and finish part 2.
bless her.
...better make sure she calls ahead.
Where's part 2? Please.
Phone ate it.

Where's part 2?

What's wrong with those wicked customers, showing up unannounced and ruining Ken's day!? Begone!
John Houle All I ask is call ahead so I know you are coming. This ain't Walmart. 😀
I pulled the sender out of my tank and guess what? Whoever installed it didn't bend the tabs for the ramps and it was dug into the plastic.
That can happen.
